HO SAR GMAM Garratt locomotive built DJH kit with Loksound 5, LED lighting running on large layout.

  • It has been a long journey for this GMAM locomotive. I bought the DJH kit almost 25 years ago. Put it together in the yearly 2000's. I ran it as DC/analog for a short time because my old train club went digital/DCC.
    So, this GMAM model was stored for 11-12 years.
    In 2017 I was in South Africa, there weren't any Garratt excursions, but on my last day there, I was in Johannesburg and I visited a steam refurbish shop in the middle of tracks in nowhere. I can't remember the name. Reefsteamers?
    Anyway, there was a dark olive GMAM just waiting to be overhauled.
    So, that gave me inspiration to work in the model.
    The pandemic came and then I have some time thinkering about of how to install a sound decoder, keep alive device, 2 speakers and upgrade lighting from 1.5v bulbs.
    I am very experienced in installing sound decoders. Because I've done a lot in brass steam locomotives over the last 20 years.
    However, this is my first install on a white metal kit. plus when I put it together, I wasn't planning the extra space that I need for decoder, keep alive and speakers. I sealed the smokebox hatch. So, I was not able to utilize that space.
    All the DCC related components were fitted between the two tenders and firebox ashpan. So far, this have been the most unusual DCC instal that I ever overtook.
    The result of install is very gratifying. She works beautifully.
    The passenger wagons are the old Lima Transkaroo. I have some Pennings (?) kits to put together. I plan to upgrade slowly with some SAR models. Also get the prototypical correct water aux tank.
    Maybe later, built another GMAM which I have another kit.

    Wow. Phenomenal bit of work. the firebox glow and crew really add life to the loco. The carriages are still great, over 40 years from when they were introduced. It looks like you're enjoying "rule 1" :) . The whitewall wheels and wide radius curves just add to the picture. Did you convert all the Lima coaches to Kadee and if so which number? (bogie or body?) What radius do you use?

    Nicely done. Enjoy. Like the dual sound with nice volume. What motors and gearboxes have you installed ?? Careful of short curves. HANNES😀

      It has the original Porterscap coreless and original gearbox with beveled gears in the coal tender only. I have modified the driving wheelset at gearbox with rubber tire wheels. So, it gets better traction in order to compensate the lack of motorized engine at water tender.
      I know that are kits that are dual motor powered, but I don’t know if more recent kits come with this option or someone offer it.
      I still have another kit to be built . So, I will strongly consider to have a dual powered option.

      😂 Lol! Não é um kit em liga metálica parecido com estanho que ainda é feito na Inglaterra. A construção é feita através de solda de baixa temperatura. Este kit está a venda desde dos anos 90.
