This song was written in the 1960's by Paul Simon and recorded by him and Art Garfunkel. The message I got from the song was like a warning to future generations to not get so caught up with things going on in the world that you forget about your fellow man. Take for example everyone walking around with a cellphone, their head is down and they are interacting more with a phone than the people all around them. People are becoming more and more anti-social. That's crazy and scary. I really enjoyed your reaction ❤️ New subscriber 💯

With respect, I disagree. Every artist's work is affected by the time/era that they live in and their work is often a reflection of that era (btw, when it comes to music, I'm talking about real music, not the bubble-gum crap created in a record executive's studio and pumped out to a generation of intellectual zombies). Paul Simon wrote this song during the 1960's, an era known for social upheaval, the questioning of traditional values and norms by the youth and the creation of the counter-culture. One institution that started facing a lot of questions was the government. The 50's were over and so too were people's blind acceptance of whatever the government said was the 'truth'. For the first time, people started openly questioning and protesting their government's decisions about everything from Civil Rights to the Vietnam War and everything in between.
I believe Paul Simon wrote this song as a warning to people to not remain silent when it came to questioning their government's decisions and their motives for those decisions, reminding everyone that, in a democracy, we are the ultimate check on a government running amok with power. As powerful as the words are, they were presented in a folk-song. Again, I believe this was the result of the era within which the song was created. The 'Flower Children' of the 60's believed love could conquer all and, to that end, there is no need to scream out a social message. It would be counter-productive, in that era, to present such a message in an angry way. The song explained what the stakes were and then warned us to keep our guard up and be ready to make some noise.
Fast forward 50 years and it seems apparent that we did not heed the warning. Along comes Disturbed with a whole new take on this classic. The message is the same but the feel is very different. It's one of anger and frustration at all of us for not having heeded the original warning. As the song builds to it's climax, you can feel Draiman's combination of anger, pain and frustration at our failure as he seems to be telling us that we, through our silence, are responsible for the world that we now live in. However, this message does also come with a sliver of hope.
The hope is that we can change things. We were the ones who made this mess so we should be the ones to clean it up. Step up, be heard and do your part to make the world a better place. It is the sort of mentality and outlook on life that seems to be inspiring millions of young people around the world to unite in organizing major, world-wide, protests for everything from gun-violence to climate change. This generation is using the tech to instantly organize massive protests around the world. In doing, so they are not only showing the way to older generations like mine, they might actually be living up to the challenge Paul Simon, and later Disturbed, gave all of us.
      My two cents, any way.

OMG DUDE! I've seen a lot of tribute videos people have made using this song (tributes to troops, to 9/11 etc.). This one might be the one that best rises to the song and it's lyrics. Thanks for sharing. To answer your question: I was responding to another person's comment. I enjoyed reading yours.

This is a good cover song by Disturbed but it’s not really their typical sound. They’ve been around for awhile & have a lot of material out there. I would suggest giving a listen to
    Inside the Fire
    The Brave & the Bold
    Legion of Monsters
    Down With the Sickness
And for some more recent material
    Hold Onto Memories
    Stronger On Your Own

The imagery, music, vocal and arrangement have taken this very old song and renewed it for us to ponder, discuss, share and enjoy!! * I highly recommend having the lyrics available when listening; maybe even a bit of background on Disturbed, Simon and Garfunkel. ~Great song... The original version, written and performed by Simon And Garfunkel in the 1960s, was a warning of what might be, in the form of a haunting, soulful ballad.
Disturbed's cover is an epic Jeremiad, pronouncing doom on a world that didn't heed the original warning. It's also the best cover of any song, ever.

    Ms Simone
Thanx for your reaction... so genuine. You notice the words neon light, neon god. In country music if neon on is used they are referring to a bar or club and some kind of alcohol. My interpretation of neon god is computers. Song was written 1963 by 21 yr old Paul Simon 2 was after assasination of jfk. The silence like a cancer grows is people not speaking up about injustices. When it came out in 1964 people were angry with Paul about the words. I was raised in one of the Pentecostal churches. This version David drama in is preaching like sermons and prophecies I heard as a child. David was a cantor in the Jewish religion. Believe me he intended this as a sermon. Simon and Garfunkel sang rock folk music and that’s what their version sounded like. But, David brought their words back to me.nit is dark and hard but I love this beautiful song thanx for the react. I went looking for you. I searched for you in the you tube search engine and you did not let down. I’m still mad at (not all) country music for stereotypical lyrics that has a guy with boots on and a beer in his hand. The women in country use better words than this but male disc jockeys won’t play them much. You brought a fresh react to a song 57 years old.

2020 65000 people maybe more, people bowed heads n prayed, warnings were there, this is how I feel right now. 65000 people died why?? Sound of silence was disturbed omg

You heard the song but did you understand its meaning? Paul Simon wrote this in 1964 as a warning, Disturbed sang is as the rage of no one listened to the warning. If you would please find the Spanish Cartoon Version of Disturbed Sound of Silence. They hit the nail right on the head. Think today's Technology.. No one listens they hear but do not listen. Cell Phones, Remote everything, Video Games. No Family sit down and talk anymore. Everyone's nose is in their Phones or Computers or Video Games.

Forget the performance. Now, right now, here, listen to the message! It is a warning of our world here and now, far more than when Paul Simon wrote it back in the 1960's. Feel the meaning!

This song is about when TV came along . Bringing about the end of the family. No more evening meal together , no more playing together, no more talking , no more singing . And definitely no more praying together . Just silence and the TV

@@SimplyKSimone He is telling about how music is dying because the lack of meaning and about people who do not communicate with each other example look at the world today at how everyone is against each other, but when music hits your souls with goose bumps you know you heard something. Any song just listen and read the words.
