    1) David was ill that night and had been losing his voice. 2) He had that power in his voice sitting down. 3) He never changed his distance from the mike. 4) His voice is so powerful they were not afraid the drums would overpower him. Instead, they put the drums next to him. David is a badass singer!

    This version is really a journey. David starts off soft and low, like he's sad. And, then, he's clearly very angry. It really tells the story of, being sad that humans aren't connecting on a personal level anymore, and then being pissed off that nothing has changed. And I think Disturbed's version helps you grasp the story more than Simon and Garfunkel's.

    • @somersetcace1
      @somersetcace1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It does help you grasp the story more I think. Not to take away from the original though. That's a beautiful version, but I see your point. You can't help but listen to the last half of that and not choke up, unless you have no soul what so ever. I believe Paul Simon complimented them on this performance specifically. I have watched a lot of reaction videos of the official video and the Conan O'Brian Show video. There have been two or three comments I have seen from people who were in the theater audience that night. Their comments were that the applause and standing ovation went on for about 10 or more minutes. I saw somewhere that this broadcast got the highest response of any other that they have had and with over 800 million views of Disturbed's play that is huge.
      I am 76 and after seeing the official video last year, I called my younger son, 42, to see what he thought of the video and group because I told him that I had never understood the song when Simon & Garfunkel first sang it but I do understand it after Disturbed's version.

    It is not anger but a righteous wrath and rage. The range of Disturbed's version goes from haunting, seeing/feeling, to rage, and finally acceptance. One reactor summed David's voice up perfectly; his voice is a choir, the whole choir.

    This performance takes you on a journey. It starts so soft and so slow, it almost lulls you. As line after line progresses the tempo and the volume start to increase, as if he's wanting to make sure you're paying attention to the lyrics that were powerful when they were first written, and may be even more powerful in the world of today. The emotion in the final verse is revealed in David's trademark rasp, along with the continued crescendo of voice, music and those tympani drums. The song takes you higher and higher, and almost out of the blue, everything drops for the last line. I know that when I first heard this version, I felt like I was flying, to be gently returned to the ground with the final words. The performance left me with a spectrum of emotions that is still hard to explain. I just know I had heard something almost magical, and that I will forever be changed as a result.

    • @robertcasey7312
      @robertcasey7312 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I completely agree. I’m 64, the performance is powerfully moving. Took me back to the fear and angst of the 1960s. Music was the soundtrack, the Vietnam War was the backdrop to my childhood, day after day, year after year. Nightly news displayed numbers of dead from each side with corresponding flags. Like following baseball teams and their scores. With each day we grew one day closer to qualifying for the draft. Music provided hope. It countered the message from the government and our parents. In 1968 at age ten I asked my father, a West Point Graduate, if I was going to Vietnam when I grew up. He assured me “The War will be over long before then”. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. military unit left Vietnam. The War continued until April 30, 1975. Disturbed’s cover gives the song the voice the lyrics deserve. Yes it is an incredible journey. TY.

    Everytime I listen to this song, I feel for the loss of innocence, the loss of society, and everything that we've cast aside over the last few decades. While we've made progress, we've lost our souls, we've lost our emotions, and we've lost each other. This song sends me down a dark hall knwoing that the hall is much longer before the light.

    David Draiman comes from an orthodox Jewish family and was classically trained as a cantor. In my opinion, there is no other male vocalist alive whose voice compares with David's on this track. He gives quite simply, an amazing performance here. Sofie, your reaction to this song is exactly the same as mine and probably millions of others on first hearing, and when you see how many people have checked out the official video, you can see how popular this version is around the world. Apparently, Paul Simon loves this version too, and that's a hell of a compliment.
