    Simon & Garfunkel’s was a whispered warning. Disturbed’s is a battle cry!

Someone said somewhere that the Simon and Garfunkle version is the warning and Disturbed is the anger at not listening to the warning. This is the only cover that Paul Simon recommends. He also said that it's now Disturbed song as they did it more justice than they could.

I agree, and unfortunately it is us the over 50 crowd(including myself) that didn't heed the warning, and now our children and grandchildren are paying the price.

I find this version deeper than the original. David Draiman brings a darker feel to the song with his baritone and greater sense of urgency. He brings an emotional punch by tapping into the spiritual aspects of the song. His original musical training was as a Hazzan (Jewish Cantor) in his youth.

I have listened to dozens of reviews and reactions on this song and I like yours because it said no Pause . That being said I am a 65 year old disabled man with very little to do but study the change in our world and listen to reactions to this cover. Most others can not give this a fair review because they are too busy pausing and forcing their Ideas on it without really experiencing the whole song. Which for a music critic is very stupid. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and never really got the lyrics until now. This brings tears of TRUTH to my eyes every single time I hear it!

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! Every time I hear this I get goosebumps. The man can sing...no matter if it's a ballad, heavy metal or in between! Loved your comments.

I think Disturbed translated the song to our century. They put the words into emotions in a way that wasn't possible in the 70s. Anger, fear, depression... no topics at that time but that is what the lyrics tell about from our view now. In my view, in the time i live in, this is better than the original.

A heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and owns a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening! No matter what genre you like, this is superbly done and flawless! The best cover/song/video these past 7 years! DISTURBED ~ WOW!!

It's important to listen to what he is saying, which is ironic because the song says it's one of the things we haven't been doing. My take is the Simon and Garfunkel version was a gentle reminder that we are doing things like hearing others without actually listening to what's actually being said and the Disturb's version is a rightfully angry cry that we still haven't heeded Paul's warning from 1964.

Thr range and power of this man and song is incredible. Appropriately done for this time in history. Just as in the way it was done in the 60s was perfect. My favorite song in both decades. A Masterpiece.

Thanks, I enjoyed your discussion a lot. Yes, the original is more a folk song, this more a call to arms. It was for decades my favourite song, still is, just sung by a different group. People tend to have a visceral reaction to the challenge of this version: tears, body pulling back, chills, gut-clenching all common. I love David Draiman's voice - this song introduced me to Disturbed who are now my favourite band. You might like to see The Light, another beautiful song from them, or something like their Land of Confusion cover.

I’m not quoting Neal Simon verbatim, but he made a statement that when he wrote it, it was a warning to people, and when Disturbed did the cover, it reflected anger that the people didn’t listen to the warning. He let David know how much he loved the cover and that the song belongs to Disturbed now.

Maybe you’ve already done this having heard other covers of it. But from you I saw a face enjoying the song. But the song, this song, this version needed your interpretation for today audience. It’s a prophecy sung by David, in a preaching manner. Simon and Garfunkel were not praised for this song as people thought they were preaching to them and they were. But it has a meaning different sometimes from one person to the next. I didn’t want your artistic interpretation but what your soul felt. Simon wrote this in a bathroom on the floor in the dark 2 weeks after the assasination of John f Kennedy, president of the United States in 1964. Find the relevance to you. You graded the songs performance. You’re young. It had a meaning 56 years ago. Some of this was about technology and some of it was not listening to the cries of our minority mankind. That doesn’t have to be your interpretation. But I didn’t get any of that from you. Maybe you already had it from hearing it by the composer and other covers. David just got through preaching a sermon with simons song. If you’ve never heard a sermon from an evangelical minister this was it. A prophecy.
