She is so cartoon-ish because of it, like some cartoon character when expressing emotions, because human naturally can't express emotions that well, so in anime and cartoons characters express their emotions very visibly and making it very obvious. I am 63 years old now. Heard the original when I was a kid. S&G did it to perfection then. Decades go by and all that's changed are the faces and the names, while the silence has only deepened. I think maybe something some people don't get is that not all singing is meant to be "pretty" and "likable", and that not all beauty is "nice" and "correct". Or even further, that not all anger is bad or wrong either. This cover is really an excellent showcase of one way of "what angry growling is for", because it shows us an emotional story that wouldn't be complete without anger: It begins in loss and grief at the dearth of communication and connection, which is shown in the abandoned and destroyed instruments and desolate landscapes, and perfectly mirrored in the tender, grieving clean vocals. Humankind is shown as disconnected and lost. The singer(and the band) then attempts to get people to listen to eachother, and to hear the message. But when the message falls to deaf ears, instead of falling back to despair, quietness and acquiescence, they dig into their fury. They won't accept and give up humanity to the worship of money and consumption (the neon god), but *demands* to be heard, *demands* to break through.
In essence, the message to me is that culture, music and humanity have to shake themselves free, even by anger, to find themselves, find eachother, to live for eachother and not for neon lights. And David takes us through from those emotions of sorrow and loss, through the build up of hope and confidence, up to a crescendo of anger - and finally back to the calm of a new possibility as the musicians arrive with their songs. And in this context the distorted singing is an absolutely incredible way to convey that emotion.
I'd say this is an excellent "gateway" for people who "don't get why people would listen to such ugly things". This is why.

Raised as a Cantor, Davie naturally looks at a song as all consonants 😉
Joking aside, every single vocal approach, from the rounded beauty of bel canto to the brutality of Metal screaming, has a function in the expressive pallet of singing. This is why modern singers like Draiman and Floor Jansen are so interesting: because they understand that the brutal sounds developed in Metal singing can be tools to juxtapose rage (or scorn) with beauty and sensitivity. And they have the technique to do it safely, and the musicality to use it where belongs in a song.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Hello. I love this song the way Disturbed sings it.
this is a video of Draiman worming up during sound checks with the song 'Unchained Melody'.
      loudwire.com/watch-disturbed-david-draiman-warm-up-unchained-melody-soundcheck/
About David, some have told you that he is a classically trained vocalist and does exercises to safely make his voice raspy. Look at his mouth and jaw positioning when he is holding those raspy words. And also how he holds on the 'N' in silence. I also read that he has or had bad acid reflux disease and needed surgery to repair the valve between the esophagus and stomach. One report also said that he has a 6 octave range, which may be stretching it a bit BUT i'm not the professional.
If you see my 'profile pic' you can see who I was for 21 year ('90--'11), well who I still am but no longer active. In the middle of that time I spent 10 days working at the site (Ground Zero) in New York City. When I hear this song, I see those sights, the pictures, the videos, the pile in front of me. I didn't search for people, but I performed support roles. Mostly I cleaned FDNY and NYPD guys off as they got off the pile to go into the rehab or to leave. And so many of those lyrics voice what those images were.

When I listen to this song and think of what David is describing I weep in both joy and sadness. It is immense, insurmountable and incredible. His voice feels unbelievably powerful.
She is describing why his voice sounds that way. Her brain doesn't hear with emotion, its her job to technically break down 'why' something does what it does and to promote you to do what you want to do, to achieve the effect you want, in your voice. 10/10. Probably one of the best versions of a classic that I have ever heard, since first hearing it a few days ago, I must have played it a hundred times or more. It's like he wrote the song, he performs it like he believes in it, he's turned it into a powerful message and the emotion he adds is contagious. I would bet that almost all of us have the same facial expressions when we play it, great review from The Charismatic Voice lady.

I absolutely love David's version of this song. To me it is sung as it is meant to be, full of darkness, full of anguish, regret and warning. Listening to Simon and Garfunkel after... just sounds so inconsequential. I cried the first time I heard this version, real, heavy tears at all the terrible disconnection we've experienced between us. All of us. He's asking us to let go of the 'neon gods' that cause so much pain and listen to what is truly said. I was so moved and so it seems was Paul Simon when he heard this version. Thank you Elizabeth.

David actually has a deep passion for"The Sound of Silence", & it comes out in his voice. He's actually wanted to cover it, for years, but was so obsessed with doing it perfect, that he didn't want to do it until he was convinced that he could do it the proper justice. Way to go! That was until their producer, Kevin Churko, came up with that piano that starts off the song that David, after recording for the day, decided to go back into the booth to see what they could do... Long story short, after three hours in the booth for that song, the longest in his career, they found the best take and here it is...
