So deep and beautifully HUMAN. I would venture to say that covers almost universally are better than the originals… originals that either never reached their full potential, or simply needed a layer of sheen on top to bring them to greatness. This for sure, is a case of the former … Dave’s vocals were exactly what was needed for the lyrics of this song. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@-KingOfKhaos I would agree so long as we understand that we are talking about the kind of covers that are break out songs on their own. Go into any concert and there is a good chance the singer is going to do a cover of one or two of her favourite songs. That is fine and all but rarely better then the original. But if you go through the effort of producing a cover (by which I mean you take it to the studio with a producer and the whole works) it is generally because you see a significant way to improve on it in some manner and odds are good it will be better then the original.
I think maybe something some people don't get is that not all singing is meant to be "pretty" and "likable", and that not all beauty is "nice" and "correct". Or even further, that not all anger is bad or wrong either. This cover is really an excellent showcase of one way of "what angry growling is for", because it shows us an emotional story that wouldn't be complete without anger: It begins in loss and grief at the dearth of communication and connection, which is shown in the abandoned and destroyed instruments and desolate landscapes, and perfectly mirrored in the tender, grieving clean vocals. Humankind is shown as disconnected and lost. The singer(and the band) then attempts to get people to listen to eachother, and to hear the message. But when the message falls to deaf ears, instead of falling back to despair, quietness and acquiescence, they dig into their fury. They won't accept and give up humanity to the worship of money and consumption (the neon god), but *demands* to be heard, *demands* to break through. In essence, the message to me is that culture, music and humanity have to shake themselves free, even by anger, to find themselves, find eachother, to live for eachother and not for neon lights. And David takes us through from those emotions of sorrow and loss, through the build up of hope and confidence, up to a crescendo of anger - and finally back to the calm of a new possibility as the musicians arrive with their songs. And in this context the distorted singing is an absolutely incredible way to convey that emotion. I'd say this is an excellent "gateway" for people who "don't get why people would listen to such ugly things". This is why.
I love when metal singers do more tradition, lyric pieces. I feel like the rasp they develop in their voices from their own genre brings a really new depth and flavor to other genres. This is a perfect example.
Something that always bugged me about S&G's version that always bugged me was that it sounds oddly happy? It's something you could bob your head to or something you'd fall asleep to. Disturbed's version feels more like a gut punch. Originally a warning, and now anger that it was ignored.

She genuinely looks like she’s a freak. Her reaction totally creeped me out. This is a beautiful and amazing song. But her facial expressions during the song were so exaggerated that it just comes off as faking it.
I took many years of vocal lessons, she is really listening to the song. I still get frisson every time I hear this version. As someone who can appreciate musical talent, she is likely not faking and actually feeling this song.
Her expressions are priceless, they are in every video visible, in some, like here, more than the other videos. She is so cartoon-ish because of it, like some cartoon character when expressing emotions, because human naturally can't express emotions that well, so in anime and cartoons characters express their emotions very visibly and making it very obvious. Usually you wont see people like her doing such facial emotional expressions. She is a rare being. :D
I read someone said that Simon and Garfunkel’s version was the warning. While David’s version was the side of anger the warning wasn’t listened to. Really puts a crazier depth to the meaning of the song.

Absolutely the best cover I have ever heard. I am 85 years old, and this song brings me back to when I was in my twenties, it made me want to make me cry. The original was much weaker.

This woman is so fascinating. Just watching her facial expressions it does something to you. She almost helps you take in another element or depth of what you're listening to.

I am 63 years old now. Heard the original when I was a kid. S&G did it to perfection then. Decades go by and all that's changed are the faces and the names, while the silence has only deepened. David is the musical definition of never judge a book by its cover. He can put together a beautiful melodic performance or do 5 minutes of growling and animalistic rage.
I saw disturbed in 2009 and 2019, and it was like seeing two different bands. 2009 it was straight up metal, 2019, the only true metal sound was from 3 or 4 songs out of a 2 hour set
I grew up with the original by Simon and Garfunkel and have always liked it. I stumbled across this version a week ago and I was just stunned. I have listened to it at least 30 times since and it gets me every time. He has brought a whole new depth of feeling to the song. He has made it personal. I picture a man who has lived his whole life in this world of "me, me, listen to me" and one day someone asks him "What's do you think? What's your story?" So he starts, first with a feeling of "that's the way it is and it'll never change." Then he realizes that someone IS listening and he starts expressing his frustration which turns to anger, verging on rage. At the end he stops, knowing that someone is listening but resigned to the fact that no one cares, resulting in his final, sad "......of silence." For me it's a very emotional rendition.

It's basically a master class in how to do a cover. Faithful to the feel of the original, but, with it's own uniqueness. It's theirs enough so you can't mistake it for the original.
It's also respectful to the original and at the same time an evolution of it. So much so that the original writer actually wrote to the cover artist to praise the cover.

True, you have some covers or "interpretations" that bring a whole new meaning to lyrics, a new depth and sometimes they are even more rich than the original without taking away the value. It's what I think about sweet dreams by marylin manson or imagine by a perfect circle... It takes really a lot of genius to make those arrangements and end with a tribute.

I especially like his violent change of tone during the line "Suddenly it changes, violently it changes"...not sure what that's called but like...discriptive lyrics? They describe a change in the music or in this case, the tone.

One report also said that he has a 6 octave range, which may be stretching it a bit BUT i'm not the professional. If you see my 'profile pic' you can see who I was for 21 year ('90--'11), well who I still am but no longer active. In the middle of that time I spent 10 days working at the site (Ground Zero) in New York City. When I hear this song, I see those sights, the pictures, the videos, the pile in front of me. I didn't search for people, but I performed support roles. Mostly I cleaned FDNY and NYPD guys off as they got off the pile to go into the rehab or to leave. And so many of those lyrics voice what those images were.

There is only a few times that I have listened to a cover of an iconic song and thought they did it better than the original. When I heard this version on TV I was floored. The way he started the song and the build up of tension was incredible. My wife and I at times will put this in in our car and put the volume at 11. The only other cover I have ever heard that rivals this is Johnny Cash version of Hurt. That one made me cry.

He is a classically trained CANToR for the Jewish Synagogue. He left the church at the dismay of some family members in order to persue the music HE wanted to perform. And, yes it does make a difference because he does have a health issue that is exacerbated by his singing. So, had the classical training not done wonders in helping him learn to create thus errie but beautiful sound. If he were to sing angry, metal by just screaming and stressing his voice, his career would be over by now!

Personal opinion. This to me one of the best songs ever. Disturbed nailed this one! I loved the original Simon and Garfunkel version but the Disturbed version is so powerful and a dark side. It leaves me in tears and mankind's lack of really listening, and hearing each other. After listening,several times to it, I just sat and thought for awhile about what has happened to mankind as a whole. Very very powerful rendition of an old song. @@-KingOfKhaos I would agree so long as we understand that we are talking about the kind of covers that are break out songs on their own. Go into any concert and there is a good chance the singer is going to do a cover of one or two of her favourite songs. That is fine and all but rarely better then the original. But if you go through the effort of producing a cover (by which I mean you take it to the studio with a producer and the whole works) it is generally because you see a significant way to improve on it in some manner and odds are good it will be better then the original.
People never realize how beautiful the voices of rock singers are.
I learned much of the depth of the song from thin rendition too.

I think maybe something some people don't get is that not all singing is meant to be "pretty" and "likable", and that not all beauty is "nice" and "correct". Or even further, that not all anger is bad or wrong either. This cover is really an excellent showcase of one way of "what angry growling is for", because it shows us an emotional story that wouldn't be complete without anger: It begins in loss and grief at the dearth of communication and connection, which is shown in the abandoned and destroyed instruments and desolate landscapes, and perfectly mirrored in the tender, grieving clean vocals. Humankind is shown as disconnected and lost. The singer(and the band) then attempts to get people to listen to eachother, and to hear the message. But when the message falls to deaf ears, instead of falling back to despair, quietness and acquiescence, they dig into their fury. They won't accept and give up humanity to the worship of money and consumption (the neon god), but *demands* to be heard, *demands* to break through.
In essence, the message to me is that culture, music and humanity have to shake themselves free, even by anger, to find themselves, find eachother, to live for eachother and not for neon lights. And David takes us through from those emotions of sorrow and loss, through the build up of hope and confidence, up to a crescendo of anger - and finally back to the calm of a new possibility as the musicians arrive with their songs. And in this context the distorted singing is an absolutely incredible way to convey that emotion.
I'd say this is an excellent "gateway" for people who "don't get why people would listen to such ugly things". This is why.
I love when metal singers do more tradition, lyric pieces. I feel like the rasp they develop in their voices from their own genre brings a really new depth and flavor to other genres. This is a perfect example.
Having heard so many versions of this song, I think Disturbed actually found the essence of the song.

Something that always bugged me about S&G's version that always bugged me was that it sounds oddly happy? It's something you could bob your head to or something you'd fall asleep to. Disturbed's version feels more like a gut punch. Originally a warning, and now anger that it was ignored.

She is so cartoon-ish because of it, like some cartoon character when expressing emotions, because human naturally can't express emotions that well, so in anime and cartoons characters express their emotions very visibly and making it very obvious. Usually you wont see people like her doing such facial emotional expressions. She is a rare being. :D

I am 63 years old now. Heard the original when I was a kid. S&G did it to perfection then. Decades go by and all that's changed are the faces and the names, while the silence has only deepened. I saw disturbed in 2009 and 2019, and it was like seeing two different bands. 2009 it was straight up metal, 2019, the only true metal sound was from 3 or 4 songs out of a 2 hour set
I grew up with the original by Simon and Garfunkel and have always liked it. I stumbled across this version a week ago and I was just stunned. I have listened to it at least 30 times since and it gets me every time. He has brought a whole new depth of feeling to the song. He has made it personal. I picture a man who has lived his whole life in this world of "me, me, listen to me" and one day someone asks him "What's do you think? What's your story?"
So he starts, first with a feeling of "that's the way it is and it'll never change." Then he realizes that someone IS listening and he starts expressing his frustration which turns to anger, verging on rage. At the end he stops, knowing that someone is listening but resigned to the fact that no one cares, resulting in his final, sad "......of silence." For me it's a very emotional rendition.

100% agree, a perfect example what makes a good cover: Respect the original and it's message. Add your own style, but not too much. What is "not too much" strongly depends on the song.
True, you have some covers or "interpretations" that bring a whole new meaning to lyrics, a new depth and sometimes they are even more rich than the original without taking away the value. It's what I think about sweet dreams by marylin manson or imagine by a perfect circle... It takes really a lot of genius to make those arrangements and end with a tribute.
David Dramain was trained as a synagogue cantor, which is why his voice sounds "classical." This is one of my favorite songs!

They describe a change in the music or in this case, the tone.

You listen to music with your entire face. When you're hearing a song you look like the most kind and caring person in the world.
I was just about to say this! The way her eyes go wide at 1:46 and her slight smile at 1:53 is so telling. Those are obviously the expressions of someone whose expectations were completely blown away with this cover. Seeing her emotions at those two examples invoked the same emotions in me, even after listening to this for the millionth time.
While the song was building up, I saw a few moments where I'm pretty sure by her expression that she wanted to join in.
I could watch this over and over just to see her face. So pretty and sweet as her face lights up and changes throughout the song. She appears to be a very innocent and sweet soul.

About David, some have told you that he is a classically trained vocalist and does exercises to safely make his voice raspy. Look at his mouth and jaw positioning when he is holding those raspy words. And also how he holds on the 'N' in silence. I also read that he has or had bad acid reflux disease and needed surgery to repair the valve between the esophagus and stomach. One report also said that he has a 6 octave range, which may be stretching it a bit BUT i'm not the professional.
If you see my 'profile pic' you can see who I was for 21 year ('90--'11), well who I still am but no longer active. In the middle of that time I spent 10 days working at the site (Ground Zero) in New York City. When I hear this song, I see those sights, the pictures, the videos, the pile in front of me. I didn't search for people, but I performed support roles. Mostly I cleaned FDNY and NYPD guys off as they got off the pile to go into the rehab or to leave. And so many of those lyrics voice what those images were.

There is only a few times that I have listened to a cover of an iconic song and thought they did it better than the original. When I heard this version on TV I was floored. The way he started the song and the build up of tension was incredible. My wife and I at times will put this in in our car and put the volume at 11. The only other cover I have ever heard that rivals this is Johnny Cash version of Hurt. That one made me cry.

He is a classically trained CANToR for the Jewish Synagogue. He left the church at the dismay of some family members in order to persue the music HE wanted to perform.
And, yes it does make a difference because he does have a health issue that is exacerbated by his singing. So, had the classical training not done wonders in helping him learn to create thus errie but beautiful sound. If he were to sing angry, metal by just screaming and stressing his voice, his career would be over by now!

Personal opinion. This to me one of the best songs ever. Disturbed nailed this one! I loved the original Simon and Garfunkel version but the Disturbed version is so powerful and a dark side. It leaves me in tears and mankind's lack of really listening, and hearing each other. After listening,several times to it, I just sat and thought for awhile about what has happened to mankind as a whole. Very very powerful rendition of an old song. It made me think of how things used to be. Home and Family

I always think of S&G version as the "before" version and Disturbed as the "after" version. After what? 2020 of course.
S&gs version was the warning, disturbeds version the angry, trying to get past our stubborn ears version and kicking us in the nuts while doing it.

As a loyal and diehard Disturbed fan for over two decades, seeing her slowly growing more and more excited as David was transitioning his voice into his traditional "Oooo-wah-a-a-a!!" towards the end of the song was the most adorable thing I've ever seen.
