- Stevie Wonder performed both the The Carpenter's "Close To You" and the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" on the David Frost live in 1972, utilizing the 'talkbox.' Stevie Wonder's unique use and mastery of the talkbox along with other artists such as Roger Troutman were the forefront of a new sound and movement in music. Frank Ocean attributed this particular performance as one of his favorites of all time, releasing his own cover of the record on his 2016 album, "Blonde."

Stevie Wonder inventing music (1972).

Come back to it every once in a while, life is good . god bless all of you
those carpenter lyrics man. On the day that you were born the angels got together and decided to make a dream come true. What a fucking beautiful thing to say to someone
David Frost goes from chuckling to seeing a musical moment about 50 years ahead of its time. Stevie Wonder and the band were amazing. But the look on his face when he realizes how much of a game changer this performance is is equally iconic. One of the most insane moments in recorded music history.
Stevie Wonder is truly one of the greatest to ever do it
@@johnnyappleseed6889 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
insane AND beautiful ☺❤
i love watching him go from a smile to having his mouth hang open at the beauty of stevies playing

Ladies and gentlemen you can now rest. For this is the best video on the internet. You’ve finally found it. No reason to carry on searching. There’s nothing that goes any further. The journey ends here. We conquered this mountain. We won.
Succinctly put
Tied with this won IMO: th-cam.com/video/9oX_3tHl6nI/w-d-xo.html

This is really a transformative moment we’re watching here. Stevie had, until this year 1972, been mostly known as a child prodigy making classic Motown style love songs. This is the year he releases Music of My Mind, his first work with full artistic/creative control that kicks of an all-time-great run of classic and innovative albums. I don’t think David Frost nor the audience - honestly, the world at that point - knew the kind of creative genius they had before them and it shows. That feeling of seeing a flower bloom in real time has lasted over fifty for us to still be enjoying in 2023 (and beyond).
I resonate.
@@coreythomasinc John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
David Frost really spaced out to another dimension there. God thank Stevie for letting him hit that final key, I don't think anything else could have broken the trance
I really love the expression of the host through the video. In the beginning you can see him grinning and enjoying the novelty of having a musical guest until you see his face change around 1:02 when he sees that Stevie Wonder is really putting some genuine love into the piece and he understands the performance is something more than just a show. And when Stevie takes control of the band and everyone works together as one, I think that's just so amazing to watch. And having the host get involved at 2:45 is the same. Just bringing people together
its fascinating everytime you get a glimse into the future of art through innovative individuals. And those times are rare enough to cherish inside only.
The host is David Frost. He interviewed all eight British prime ministers serving from 1964 to 2016, from Alec Douglas-Home to David Cameron, and all eight American presidents in office from 1969 to 2008, from Lyndon B. Johnson to George W. Bush
He interviewed Muhammad Ali, the very famous Richard Nixon interviews, Paul McCartney, MJ, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, and more
He has a BAFTA fellowship and won a lifetime achievment award at the Emmys
He is as legendary in the TV industry as Stevie Wonder is in the music industry
@@BanAaron clearly not since I didn't know his name
@@King-Squid-99 His hey day was in the 70's.
I like the way Stevie turned "eyes so blue" to "eye so true"
Speaking of eyes, it's interesting to see his eyes moving around.
I sing the lyrics that way now😊
I always liked how pro black Stevie is
What’s the original song?
Original Aristide
I just cried so hard to this y’all have no idea

you know, laughing is a very common reaction to a carpenters cover. but damn did they caught on quick because after 10 seconds you become hypnotized at witnessing the future of music because at 1:50 david frost's reaction is how we all are at that point
“And that is why…” Stevie’s voice has seldom been described as sexy. My goodness, his tone is of a man’s- able to hold you strong, yet gentle so you won’t find yourself hurt in his embrace. I love Stevie, a pillar in American life.

The rhythm guitar….
Damn professional

Shoutout Michael Sembello, one of the smoothest rhythm playing I ever heard
1:00 might be the precise moment he went from a charming prodigy to one of the greats. even with this low-fidelity i can still see & feel everyone’s jaws dropping. still hope we can one day get a nice pressing of this & other live wonderlove stuff… til then i’ll keep coming back to this whenever i remember in crisp 240p

wow bruh i’ve never expected to see stevie play a talk box😂
This is so damn smooth! Remember hearing this years ago. Such a vibe compared to the original song. Golden cover!
Where does this video keep going?
you can see the moment where the host goes from seeing Stevie as a joke with the talk box to being utterly amazed by his talent
THAT GUITARRRRRR 😭😭😭 does anyone know how its tuned? i cant figure it out but i NEED to
Love how the hosts jaw just drops
Between Stevie & Roger are a few other names that bear mentioning when discussing "talkbox": Wahwah Watson (Melvin Ragin) and some rock dude named *Peter Frampton.*
Also Roger from the electro Funk band Zapp!.
@@seanswinton6242 Roger (Troutman) is mentioned in the description.
This must exist forever… never let this clip not exist
Why does this make me cry
Those first notes used by Stevie Wonder are very simmilar to the ones in "Pure Imagination" by Gene Wilder. So brilliant.
I absolutely love Stevie's little hitch smiles in-between the phrases ;)
My favorite version of the song, and one of my favorite songs. I hope this video doesn't get taken down.
Everytime I listen to that transitional moment at 1:00 I reach nirvana
There’s something so peaceful sounding about this. It’s like the world getting along for 3 minutes, as cheesy as that may sound
lyrics:
why do birds suddenly appear
every time you are near, oh baby
just like me, they long to be
close to you
on the day that you were born
the angels got together
and decided
to create a dream come true
so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair
and golden stars in your eyes, so true
and this is why
never can say goodbye
no, no, no no no
never can say goodbye
even tough the pain and heartaches
it seems to follow me wherever i go
(adlibs melody)
it says :”turn around you fool,
you know you love her more and more”
tell me why is it so-
i don’t wanna let you go
i never can say goodbye, no
ooh baby
i never can say goodbye (adlibs melody)

This is a great song as itself, Stevies is also great, Franks is also great. Love how the Carpenters getting their flowers through them

People think that Roger Troutman innovated the talk box, it was Stevie.

Always curious as to why the guy laughed so hard? Confused on what was funny
Talkboxes weren't popular at the time, so he was just amused at the sound
It wasn't out of spite. He just liked it
