Ahem, the beat is quantized... To 7/16... (if you listen to the "strong" and the "weak" beat you will notice that the first one is 4/16, while the second is 3/16, giving that "drunk" feeling)
Things like this get done quite often to make the beat sound "off tempo", while it is actually extremely calculated xD

miki890098 believe it or not the whole point of a Dilla feel is that is can’t be quantised. It can’t be written down on paper either because it was originally created by accident. Dilla didn’t have modern a hip hop drum machine that quantised his hi hat to a certain polyrhythm.. it just didn’t quantise it at all leaving this slightly off beat tempo that can just be played with feel, practice and intuition
When I see that music room, all those instruments and stuff... it reminds me that it took me nine years to convince my parents to get my first instrument (which I paid for - I was already 18 by then).
I'll never make that mistake with my kids.

Yes! I got my first guitar in my second year in high school. Asked my dad to put me into a guitar course at one of the famous institutions, but I didn't get what I want even though they and the people that know our family know I have musical talent.
I'll never do what my dad did to my kid and just use my kid's talent to show off to my acquaintances and relatives in the future.

You created an 8 part harmony and did the vocals COMPLETELY BY YOURSELF, and had the same sound that the group Take 6 has while they use 6 SEPARATE vocalists! Not only that but you also play every instrument by yourself! I'm mind blown right now man. seriously. this is incredible. this song had a D'Angelo type of feel to it with like, Take 6 vocals...yet it was all your own...beautiful. simply beautiful.

So many comments from people who def haven't heard any neo-soul or J Dilla...check that stuff out, then come back and listen! He is not off-beat or anything like that...it's a particular style called slugging, or "drunk". It's purposeful, and essential to the groove. Amazing stuff as always Jacob - you've switched it up again! The bass at the end had me literally ON THE FLOOR. I mean...WHAT?!?! I honestly think you're probably the most talented all-rounded musician under 25 on the planet. I mean, how can you do this to "Why do birds suddenly appear?"!!!!

But to be honest, I should've created a "unreachably amazing music" playlist.
So this is what living in the time of Mozart felt like.
If you were upperclass and had a ticket to the auditorium/theatre mozart was playing in then yes.
Music wasn't recorded then. Only the upper echelon of people, from relatively nearby, would have ever heard him play.

This is musical talent beyond beyond words. A Burt Bacharach classic marinated with a deliciously funky neo-soul vibe topped with ethereal vocals, all this from a young lad from the UK... this is madness I tell you! Wow.
I can't believe this track is 5.5 years old, already. I'm in love with all the new stuff but it hasn't curbed my love for this older stuff at all. This still sounds absolutely brilliant to me.

Don't worry about Jacob, Elias. (There is no need.) He is too intelligent, too honest, too wise to fall into any of the traps of the music business. I am sure he will meet people who have substance dependencies, bad habits, dangerous companions and all the rest, but Jacob is an incredibly stable and balanced human being. He won't even be tempted to enter their world. I just hope he meets a terrific girl soon who will be the love of his life. So far (it seems) he has been working too hard to make space for the fulfilling love-life he deserves. But it can't be long now.

More 'pop' sure - or whatever people saying about this video (good or bad) being more 'accessible' and 'mainstream' - doesn't matter at all. Does not matter. Art is art, and shouldn't be changed or censored because it is not mainstream enough or too mainstream. That shouldn't be a factor. This is really really really good. Makes me smile like a little kid.

You've completely reimagined one of my favourite songs and its unlike anything I've ever heard. Dude, this is a freakin' masterpiece.

It's a departure from what Jacob Collier's fans are accustomed to, but it's objectively more accessible to a casual listener who is not familiar with his music because you can bob your head to it, a key component to the musician who wants to gain an audience (try bobbing your head to pure imagination). Jacob's talent as an instrumentalist/arranger is what will ultimately propel him to greatness, hence his current college major. He is not a solo singer by trade. Arrangements like this will attract major guys like D'angelo/Glasper/Scofield, etc. to want to work with him. I think the key to success for Jacob is to ultimately add originals into his repertoire and surround himself with a dedicated band who can pull off his level of execution, not an easy task but he has a lot of time. Until then, he should keep showcasing his incredible range with gems like this one, instead of sticking to the Take 6 formula which has already been done.
Lol I find this a lot less accessible than his usual stuff. The rhythm I found especially disorienting throughout - what feel is it even? Shuffle? Swing? Call it inexperience, but I couldn't bob my head to this at all!

Imagine hearing this in 2016... And going to see him live in London supporting Terence Blanchard... Still hits super hard. The word genius is bandied about but Jacob really is a cut above the rest.
He amazes me for the fact that he is obviously a avid listener of all forms of music and able to encompass all styles in his playing but how does he manage to make it so much his own.
I have never come across such an unaffected capable musician, composer and to me it is no mistake he grew up in London England where cultural boundaries are less severe.
He has many decriers within some spheres of musicians who see him as an elitist aided and abetted to success but all I hear is music like I have never heard before.

whoaaa!!! I cant believe what i just heard. Man you are most definitely very musically sound. Im a drummer and a key player myself and the melodies and rhythm changes you made were out this world. But in all honesty, People are not ready for you yet. It will probably be a year or two before they actually understand what in the world you just did to their ears. I have a saying that I usually say when I hear different musicians that are just simply too unique for the world. "Before their time." your skill level is not comprehensive to most people yet. which is why i said it will probably be a little while until they understand how amazing this piece was. But keep at it. As someone who was actually around & remembers the original release of this song thank you. A moving arrangement which clearly shows much respect for the original while making it relevant to today's music.
