    the ominous tone is because the book is a warning about following a charismatic leader

      Thanks again! Yes, that became clear later on as I watched, made some comparisons to a list of such people in history, but had to cut it out for length purposes. Much appreciated!

    The messiah trop is one that Herbert was warning against.

      Hey thanks for the comment! Yes I was made aware of this when I did Dune part 1 two years ago. Indeed, Jesus warned that there would be many so called messiah's after him (Matthew 24:24) and that they would bring dread to Israel (like Simon Bar Kokhba 100 years later in 135 AD). And yes, all of these were either wiped out by the Roman Empire (which the harkonnen seem to resemble, at least on their home planet), or their movements/prophecies came to nothing. The world does not remember them today, you have to mine their history from old books.

    The baron nearly died in the gas attack in part 1. The spice bath is for healing, as well as a display of wealth. The floating balls help him breathe. He's 500 pounds and needs antigravity suspensors to move about--a massive size when Dune came out in 1965. Now, not so unheard of.

      Hey thanks for the comment! That makes sense, I also read (stopped doing that!) another, lets say, more heinous reason he needs the baths, involving something he did to a reverend mother years ago? They say its a rumor.

    Thanks for the great reaction. I love that you're taking in the movie rather than often blabbering over it like some other reactors. Thanks!

    A huge amount had to be left out of the movies but it's important stuff and it will flesh out the world of Dune. If you like to read I can't recommend the books highly enough. If reading's not your thing then check out some of the videos on YT that explain things like the Spacing Guild (which is a huge deal in Dune), the Bene Gesserit, the Kwisatz Haderach, Mentats, the various houses and planets involved in the story, the ecology of Arrakis (ecology was actually one of the main points of the novel) and the life cycle of the sandworms, and so much more. Quinn's Ideas is my favorite channel, but Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians also put out good Dune content. Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station does the deepest dive into Dune, I mean the guy has a literal PhD in Dune. But his videos are long and kinda dry so they're not for everyone. Have fun! 🖖🏽

      Hey thanks for the insightful comment!! Yeah I love reading (have to as a bible teacher and expositional preacher). Written a few books myself (link in description, shameless!), big fan of the original Bram Stoker's Dracula and it's epistolary writing style, so I'd love dive in. I'm all about world building, details, footnotes, that kind of thing. I'll have a lot more free time from July, so have to put Dune on the docket. Thanks!

      @@KensCinemaSofa Awesome! I considered an education in Bible studies years ago after taking some classes. Such an interesting subject and so much to learn about. You'll probably love Dune then. All of Frank Herbert's books are complex and philosophical in a way that makes them more exciting to read. The Dune books written later by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson come across more like fan fiction to me. They're okay and they add to the whole Dune universe, but the stories don't really go very deep.
      Enjoy! 😃

    when Jessica altered the water of life and gained access to her genetic memory as well as the memories the old reverend mother gave her, the same thing happened to the embryo inside her so Alia is fully aware and has all the same memories and abilities of a reverend mother

    Speaking of Lawrence of Arabia, its echoes in this film extend to details such as “. . . , once you woke up.” Recall that Lawrence is caught sleeping at inopportune times. And this is actually taking place more than 10k years in the future because they’re not using the Gregorian calendar.

      Hey thanks for that insightful comment! I hadn't thought of that, so true, he did sleep a lot in that film early on. I remember hearing just one phrase from the old Lynch Dune -- "the sleeper has awakened!"
      Reminds me of a fragment of writing in scripture (which scholars believe may be one of the first Christian hymns). "for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” - Ephesians 5:14

    the Colosseum scene is very reminiscent of Roman public executions it's a show rather than a true fight

    You are correct in noticing a large Arabic influence in the Fremen culture. They are the called “Zen Sunni wanderers”. They are descended from Arabic and Muslim culture and religious practices.
    The character “Rabaan” is known as “The Beast” since he is not the sharpest tool. He is violent and reactionary without any thought of the impact. He is a hammer and ultimately a coward.

    • @KensCinemaSofa
      @KensCinemaSofa  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for the helpful comment Travis! It makes a lot of sense, being descendants of human from earth but thousands of years (?) in the future. It stands to reason that it would evolve. Are these details from the books?

    • @travisepsteen3234
      @travisepsteen3234 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@KensCinemaSofa yes. Also, one other small detail, Rabaan is also called “The Beast” because he murdered his father. If you think he is bad, wait till you meet his younger brother.
      The Harkonnens represent extreme gluttony, hedonism, greed, sadism, hate, etc. All worst impulses of man.

      Yeah its interesting how humanity has kind of separated into these tribes that embody certain traits this far in the future. I definitely see the all of those you listed in the Baron

    I watched this after putting it off... worried it would befall the same skidmark routine as every other hollywood project and I loved Part 1 , I didnt want to be dissapointed and hate it.
    I watched it 3x in 48 hrs now... and cannot wait and hoping for a 2 Part Children/Messiah end? or a double final with 2 parts for each "Children" & "Messiah" as an Ultra Saga - given there is PLENTY OF MATERIAL TO ACCOMPOLISH THIS and ultimately want to see this go THE FULL GAMBIT ! and I want "THE TWINS" , I want thr "Old Man/Mysterious Shaman" , I want the Demi-God Worm God , I want Game of Thrones x100 via ehat we have already seen, and I cannot wait to see some of this unfold; However I am already EXTREMELY EXTREMELY PISSED AT THE CHOICE FOR THE "DUNE: PROPHECY" prequel series dealing with what I am assuming is the formation of the Geserit , and SO INCREDIBKY URKED by their choice. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
    ALARMS are going off, its WAY TOO SOON @MAX & this totally is a rush and the all too familiar VAMPIRICAL RISH TO OVER SATURATE EVERYTHING NOW w/ DUNE. *Onky due to DUNE II Success , as everyone was still waiting for DUNE II and i cannot believe Prophecy is being allowed the green light? wtaf HBO?
