Some additional non-spoiler lore : * The story is pretty much set on our timeline roughly 24,000 years into the future. All the characters you see are humans, slightly evolved due to various significant events before Paul's saga. House Atriedes can actually trace their ancestry back to House Atreus of ancient Greek civilization & later Rome as well * Earth is referred to as Terra and has been sadly lost to history after it was struck by a meteor and designated as a National park millennia after humans left it * Roughly 10,000 years before Paul's story, there was a holy war against the "Thinking Machines" or basically AI, aftermath of which resulted in the complete explusion & abandonment of any artificial intelligent technology, machinery, weapons or equipment across the known universe. It was referred to as the "Butlerian Jihad" and paved the way for how human species would evolve & adapt without the luxury of thinking machines * The Bene Gesserit sisterhood, Space Navigators/Guild & Mentats (human computers) were all developed and established in and around this turbulent time period resulting in the formation of the current feudal imperium with an Emperor and various houses with Dukes, Barons & Counts. Various historical accounts were lost, Religious & conservative beliefs started to become the norm. This is the reason why even though the story is set way ahead into the future, it still feels ancient * Arrakis used to be an abundant water planet until some unknown group before all the AI conflict period decided to infest it with Sand Trouts, which later evolved into the giant Sand worms. The main source of Spice are sandworms & needless to say they are very vital to the ecology of Arrakis. Fremen only arrived on Arrakis only 3500/4000 years before Paul. They are descendants of the Zen-Sunni people, who were these nomadic tribes that constantly traveled to & from various planets until they were settled into Arrakis Can't wait for part 2🙏
"Various historical accounts were lost" is actually amazing. Herbert wrote this in the early 60s, yet looking at it now it's very clear that any event that caused the loss of computer technology humanity would indeed be in the dark, because so much knowledge isn't written in paper.
@@pabloc8808 The first computers date from the mid 40's: they were first built during World War 2 for data-storing, as well as deciphering enemy codes. They'd go on to become regular military tools as of the late 50's. Frank Herbert still had the first "Dune" book on the works; he might've been among those who felt wary of such advanced technology (for the time). You also had the typical conspiracy wackos around, predicting a machine uprising led by computers. The Butlerian Jihad (a rebellion started by intelligent machines) would encourage the implementation of the Mentat job. Those are peoplw trained to do all data-computing and recording just as fast as a machine.
Great reaction! Without reading the source novel or having previous knowledge of the lore, you guys picked up on so many things. BTW, which streaming service did you use to watch the movie? I’m curious because the captions were horrible. Whoever transcribed the dialogue to text made many mistakes: poor grammar, wrong words were used, and some lines in the captions weren’t even said by the characters. The movie was still good even on a small screen, but the captions were a mess.
Hmmmm... I see that The Beard doesn't like spiders !! He barely looked directly at the screen when it was on, only giving the screen a side eye every once in a while to see if it was gone !!
26:20 Well, the Duke's ornithopters had evacuated the entire crew of that harvester, so they all survived. Hilariously enough, the book says that some people stayed on that harvester and still managed to get out somehow.
@@technofilejr3401 Yes, there were a few Fremen "tourists" on board the Spice Harvester. Also in the book, the Worm Spotters were also able to evacuate 1 or 2 people as well.
53:10, in the book this fight was even more one sided. Having been trained by Duncan and Gurney since he was big enough to hold a blade, Paul was already one of the deadliest fighters in the Imperium. But until this moment Paul had never been in a duel to the death and quite frankly he didn't want to harm Jamis. Watching how prolonged the fight was, Stilgar really began to think that Paul was some type of baby faced psycho toying with Jamis. Like a cat toying with a mouse that is helpless to fight back. Stilgar almost changed his mind about taking Paul into the tribe. It was only when his mom explained that he had never ended anyone that Stilgar understood and sympathized.
At the end, that wasn’t Liet. Liet is very dead. I’ve seen lots of people react to this and I have to say that you two really understood the story. This movie is roughly the first half of the first book of 6. Part 2 will cover the rest of the first book. Can’t wait for you to see Part 2. It’s epic.
It's a pleasure to see folks engaged with this story. I look foward to your reaction to Part 2.
I see we went with the couch option for the 3 hour long movie, lol!
Lord of the rings is even longer like four hours long they don’t make good movies like they used to anymore unfortunately 😂😂😂
