Wonderful video! Have fun playing with your foil quill, I have found it to work amazingly well on a variety of materials now. I will be interested to see which foils work for you. Happy crafting. Sue
There are actually 4 "pens", not 3 - the 4th is a "calligraphy" tip HSN sold them together at one point, now they're not sold that way in very many places. [Sorry if I duplicated someone else's info!] The foils that work with the Go, Press & Foil or Glimmer machines should also work [no toner needed].
Wynter Mackenzie Agreed. When I recorded this there were no pens out so I had no idea that they’d do a calligraphy pen. I have a set of 4 from HSN that I’m breaking up for my 10,000 sub giveaway that I haven’t announced to everyone yet. If you are interested in possibly getting that, stay tuned. There are lots of fun givealway opportunities coming to celebrate. 🎉😊
I should add that by pens, I mean those that are hand held. Is there a calligraphy version out there for the machines? I hadn’t realized that if that’s the case. Sorry for the long reply but you got me wondering now. Please let me know. Thanks! 😊
Hi, Sugar Shine- I don't know if there is a broad calligraphy pen that works with any machine. I would say probably not, since calligraphy depends on turning the pen in the hand to make the thicks and thins. I don't think that would be workable with the pen held by the machine.
Wynter Mackenzie thanks! I did a search and confirmed as well that there isn’t a calligraphy pen for the machine, only the hand held version. I have all four freestyle pens but I am planning to give them away as drawings. They are tempting me though!
FYI only heat activated foil will work such as Couture Creation, Glimmer , Spellbinder and other Madelon. Toner activated foil like for the Minc machine will not work with such pen foiling system.
I have purchased kinsley Howard foil in large rolls on ebay and they work. I like I can buy in 2 and 3 inch wide rolls for sentiments etc saves on cutting etc
MINC foil also works with glue and pressure. In this case the durability depends more the the chosen adhesive than the foil brand. My crafty pals and I have used a glue pad and our favorite stamps then run the foil covered, stamped image through our manual die cut machines. Works like a charm!
Great to know! There are so many ways crafty people find to get the looks they want. I wouldn’t have guessed Minc would work well without heat. Thanks for sharing!
@@SugarShineDesigns Yes! I do agree that we crafters always find a way! Thank you so much for this review. I know so much more than I did before seeing your video. I look forward to the additional foil brands being tested.
For paper craft at least, the cheaper, easy solution is to buy a Sakura Quickie Glue Pen. It's like a ballpoint with glue in it. The glue is blue when wet, clear when dry. Put that in a pen holder in your machine and draw with it. Make sure the glue is all dry before using cheap and easily available (non heat activated) foil. Press on foil, remove and you get the same result. Won't void your warranty and will only cost a dollar or two. I did a video recently showing the results.
Yes, I’m familiar with the pen you’re talking about. Great idea! I’ll have to watch your vid on it. There’s always many ways to do similar things and there are so many fouls made for glue so that’s great too.
Great video! I got my Foil Quill from HSN a couple weeks ago, and I had success with the Spellbinders Glimmer foils and the Crafter’s Companion Foilpress foils using the medium tip and my Explore Air 2. Can’t wait to see your other videos using this system!
Well done on your thoughtful, detailed testing and review! Your thoroughness is much appreciated. You’ve helped confirm my feeling that I didn’t waste money on my newest craft tool. Thanks! Kris P
I got a FABULOUS deal, I was at JoAnns and found the Foil Quill box same as the one your showing for $25.99!!!! I thought it was a good price but didn't know how good! Glad I got it with out exactly knowing if it would work with my brother SNC
Faber Castell Eraser pencils , white ones for ink, are great for removing excess foil and let you get into tiny areas too as they sharpen to fine point.
Just so you know. I am an acrylic painter and wanted to let you know that the Minc foil will stick to acrylic paint that is run through my laminator inside a folded sheet of parchment paper. Works great. I wanted to add some foil to some pour painting earrings and tried and it worked great.
Wow. Just so I understand, if you use acrylic paint on paper or a canvas or whatever medium, the Minc foil will stick to the paint when you run it through protected by parchment paper? That's awesome! I can imagine some really pretty swirls and random foiled backgrounds. I'm going to try it! Do you find any certain color works better than another? Thanks so much for the tip!
Yes, I’ve discovered that. Anything that is only pressure or needs something to stick to such as glue or toner doesn’t work. Everything else does. Couture Creations works even better than WeRMemory Keepers. Those are my 2 faves. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you have subscribed too. Have a great day! Janet
Yes, in the beginning they didn’t take coupons but shortly after this video, they began taking them. I bought more foil and USB sticks using coupons. Yay! Glad you got a good deal!

Thank for this video. I loved to see the difference in the sizes on the same image. Just an FYI on taxes when you buy online. Usually you do not pay tax when you buy online from out of state. But you are required to pay the tax for your purchases when you file your income taxes with your state at the end of the year. On you tax form, it asks you if you had any online purchases. Many people do not do it, but you are supposed to. An exception to that is if you are tax exempt for any reason. Like if it is purchase for a business with a tax ID # or for a non-profit organization.
Thank you for a great review. I fell into the lure of Spellbinders Glimmer foil system and have not had good results with it. It is another expensive dust collector. I like the multiple pen tips With the WRMK but at this point any foiling I do will be with my laminator.
What was the cool down time for each of the pens? I'm guessing if you used the metal mat you wouldn't need to use the steel heat shield. How long does it say you can leave the heated nib in close proximity to the mat and underlying plastic components of each type of digital cutter. How long did each nib take to complete drawing their pattern? Did it vary by thickness or did it even matter? Did you have to change the drawing pressure or speed while using the different types of foil quills?
Hi! I’ll do my best to answer. 1) cool down time to a temp you can comfortably touch is about 10 minutes 2) agree that the metal mat is adequate. Honestly the heat shield doesn’t seem necessary. I rarely use it anymore because it’s hot but unless you’re leaving it in place for a very long time, it’s not hurting anything. 3) to my knowledge there is no guidance about the time you can leave the nib in close proximity for any machine. However, my personal decision is no more than 10 minutes of static time 4) drawing and foiling is the same action so as fast as each machine draws is as fast as each foils. With newish Cameo, Maker and Brother machines out, I can’t tell you which is fastest but they all do have guidance about speed if you look at that. 5) thickness is determined by the nib and the machine type seems to have little impact. 6) speed and pressure setting are the same for drawing. Follow that guidance for each machine. You can always adjust if you think it’s needed. Generally I’d say the more complex, the slower you might set the machine. Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching! Janet

Really great video thanks. I'm really interested in this product but still sitting on the fence. If you could try out couture creations hot foil I would much appreciate it. I live in New Zealand and I can easily get CC hot foil locally and also as you said if they stop making this foil then we are stuck with a totally useless tool.
Will the foil quill work without an electronic cutting machine? Like.. Could we plug it into a charger outlet and write with it like a pen? Just a thought! Thanks for sharing this!!
Yes, my daughter has the cricut expression and it wasn't doing smooth lines so she tried writing with it and it worked great, she said she went very slow to give the foil to weld onto the card.
You probably know this by now [I am late to tnis party] but there is another style of these pens, designed to work withour an electronic cutting machine - they're called Freestyle. The pen tip isn't recessed as far into its plastic housing, making it a bit easier to write with. There's also a 4th pen style, with a wider calligraphic nib. I'll be trying them all out as calligraphy tools. Thanks for the excellent and clear review.
Well, Brother has their their own foiling system. I don’t have it but my understanding is they have a glue pen that writes out and fills in words and images. You then apply foil and another tool runs the foil down into the glue. Nice idea but why go through all that when the Foil Quill does it in one step. The software update they did makes the pen fill in the letters or images so this works really well on the brother. I don’t know if Silhouette has a foiling system but the Foil Quill has an adapter that makes it work on the machine, just like it does for Cricut and Brother machines.
@@SugarShineDesigns ok I thought I held u say sillouette had a foil quill system, and I already had bought the we r memory foil quill system. I was gonna try to find it if it exists. Thank you
Lots of info. Nice presentation. I have yet to invest in a newer Cricut. I have the expression. But, my question is.. how hot is that pen when you are changing them out for a bigger size? Would it be possible to hold it in your hand and actually press on some foil to create a design? Just wonder how that would work if at all. TFS!
Good question. The casing seemed pretty cool but you’d have to be careful. But yes, I think you could leave it plugged in and slowly draw or write freehand. I thought it would be hot to the touch but it was only slightly warm.
I seriously doubt that the cutting machine companies would have a cause of action against WRMK. There are tons of products on the market that improve upon existing products or are marketed for compatibility to existing products. An example would be cell phone cables and cases. This would not be a concern for me at all. I still plan on getting a quill.
Agreed but when the Quill first came out Cricut especially was quite loud trying to scare everyone about voiding warranties and such. They put out pretty aggressive scary statements. Provo went after several small companies when they tried to set up cartridge subscription services and they have a history of suing for all kinds of things. For a long time they stopped other mats and blades from being on the market but that has also recently been more successful. I’m glad it was a bunch of bluster about the Quill. It appears that they have decided not to go after WRMK. The Quill line has been a fantastic success! It’s a great product and addition to our machines.
karen cradic Yeah, they’re selling so you always get the most positive info. It’s been quiet out there about suing and seeing it in action, you’d have to leave it plugged in for hours before damage could happen. Just be thoughtful about leaving it plugged in only when you’re using it. Otherwise the manufacturer would never know you used this tool if you had a warranty claim not related to heat damage. I’m going to get a new Maker and I will be using my Foil Quill on it without fear. Hope that helps alleviate your concerns.
My only concern is what you said about possible action by Cricut and other companies that have their own foil products. Then when that happens the foil may become unavailable.
You did a good review here! I have an Anna Griffin Minc Machine & Pen so I can foil pretty easily when I need to. One thing is if someone has a new machine w/a warranty they should Not plug the USB into their machine as it will void the warranty, they should do like you did - into another power source. TFS!
Wow i am in Australia and find it funny that your companys all seam to sue each other over everything. I have the foil quil and i am using coutre creations heat foil that works really really well with the WRMK Quill. Its what our main crafting shop sell here and was happy i tired it. I was one of these people who said NOPE not buying it now worth the money but so glad i did it.
Hi! Yes, I have another video where I tested a bunch of foils and I actually think that Cotour Creations works the best. Even better than their own foil! It’s close but the CC was just slightly better. So far, it is quiet on the suing front as far as what is out in the public. Check out the magnetic mat video in my playlist. I think that is a must have accessory! I personally really like the Foil Quill and am very glad I have it too. 😍
You may want to mention that the C holder will not fit in the CriCut machine with the single holder. It states that it will work in the Explore machine but it doesn’t and they now tell us that they don’t have a solution yet.
I have the Explore One. Put basically I’m assuming any machine that has only 1 holder. They told me I could return it but it does work in my ScanNCut so I plan on keeping it. I got an assume price from HSN of $59 so it’s definitely worth keeping.
It worked great first time, very easy! I really hope the companies don’t decide that they don’t want this in use. It’s just like using a pen, they should not have an issue with it.
It does not seem cost effective ,what would be better in my opinion is to have a pen that uses some kind of liquid metallic or foil ink with the same effect..somebody invent that one, then it will sell well
That would be an awesome idea and invention! The tool is pretty expensive now for what it is but the foils aren’t too bad. With time, the Foil Quill will have better sale prices and maybe the box stores will even start taking coupons. Let’s hope anyway. Thanks much for stoping by. 🙂
I'll test it but I think I saw another crafter use it. In that video it came out with a vintage shabby chic appearance which isn't all bad but not what all of us would be looking for. I'm not sure though. It could have been the Spellbinders foil. I plan on testing both. There isn't that much heat foil out there as it turns out. Mostly there's the kind that works with glue - at least that's what I've been finding so far. Thanks for the head's up! I hope you're right. I don't like the idea of relying on one maker for the foil. Janet
I hope not but Cricut really is aggressive and they don’t like any competition. They are sue happy from what I’ve heard about other small companies who have tried to put out mats or pens for the Cricut products. And those are accessories too.
@@cristinaljones As far as I know no company made accessories for MISTI...they made products that were similar. And since theirs is patented, they can go down that route. But I guess they have not been successful so it must be that other products have enough differences to warrant them getting away with it.
Wonderful video! Have fun playing with your foil quill, I have found it to work amazingly well on a variety of materials now. I will be interested to see which foils work for you. Happy crafting. Sue

You did a good review here! I have an Anna Griffin Minc Machine & Pen so I can foil pretty easily when I need to. One thing is if someone has a new machine w/a warranty they should Not plug the USB into their machine as it will void the warranty, they should do like you did - into another power source. TFS!
Thank you so much! Awesome 👍
It states that it will work in the Explore machine but it doesn’t and they now tell us that they don’t have a solution yet.
snowboundpilot I will mention it in next week’s video. Are you speaking of the Explore One or the Expression or both machines?
I have the Explore One. Put basically I’m assuming any machine that has only 1 holder. They told me I could return it but it does work in my ScanNCut so I plan on keeping it. I got an assume price from HSN of $59 so it’s definitely worth keeping.
snowboundpilot Great! I’m glad you can use it on your Brother. I wish I had gotten in on the HSN sale. That was a deal! Glad you did.
Has to be heat active foil Glimmer, Go press&Foil, Todo foil. Toner reactive foil will not work at all.
So clear! Thanks!
It worked great first time, very easy! I really hope the companies don’t decide that they don’t want this in use. It’s just like using a pen, they should not have an issue with it.
Yay! So glad to hear if your success. I’m hoping this product is left alone too. The more I use it, the more I love it! Janet
Thank you for the informative video. Great job. We heart corgis
Use a Sakura Quickie glue pen, just like a ballpoint. Use that in a pen holder in your machine, works just great.
Thx I have a scan and cut and didnt think about my stamps. Great idea! I was going to scan in adult detailed coloring books that I have in my stash
That’s another great idea for the Brother! Thanks. 😊
Just purchased on amazon for $47
Awesome! Have fun with it!
Very good video! I purchased this from HSN and have received it, but haven’t tried it yet.
Thanks! I hope you will try it out soon. It’s not that hard surprisingly.
Crafter’s companion foil works.
Janet
You can't sue someone for making an accessory.
I hope not but Cricut really is aggressive and they don’t like any competition. They are sue happy from what I’ve heard about other small companies who have tried to put out mats or pens for the Cricut products. And those are accessories too.
The MISTI sued the crap out of several companies for this reason.
@@cristinaljones As far as I know no company made accessories for MISTI...they made products that were similar. And since theirs is patented, they can go down that route. But I guess they have not been successful so it must be that other products have enough differences to warrant them getting away with it.
Minc will not work
'I have no idea if what I'm saying is true'. Uh hu.
I have no idea if what I’m guessing is a fact. That’s more accurate. Time will tell. Thanks much. 🤗
