Just bought ordered one thanks to this tutorial! How absolutely refreshing to have someone talk straight to the point, clearly, precisely and not as a 'wannabe' video star. The visual was very clear. Thank you!
Your's is the best video I've watched for using a Cricut machine and the ONLY one I've seen for using it with a foiling quill. I have a maker and have found the videos for Cricut really complex to follow. Many many thanks! 😄😊🙏🏼
This was one of the best reviews of a product I’ve ever watched. It’s the first review for this product that actually made me excited and hopeful that I can master it. Thank you so much! (:
So kind of you to share this, Justine! I just received my SNC and haven't had a chance to set it up yet but the foil quill is something I am willing to try. I like the fact that you are able to personalize items, which really is so cool. I debated back and forth for 3 yrs about getting either the Cricut or SNC so I'm just hoping I chose correctly...I needed something to cut out stamped images as my hands are arthritic and I'm unable to fussy cut so hopefully, the choice I made is right for me. Thanks again, Justine!
Nancy Lynn I have the original SNC and just bought the new SDX125. I bought the Brother Foiling kit after watching Julie Fei-Fan Balzer demo it on TH-cam and I love it! It is half the price of the WRMK foil quill plus does not void the warranty on your SNC machine and uses regular lamination foil. I found this a win win situation for me. Good luck with your new machine.
Wonderful tutorial! I'm just starting out foiling and heard about the quill tool. This looks great, I'm off to purchase the quill right now! Thank you so much!
Thankyou for an informative review. I bought the foil quill last year and have only done 1 project so far on a scan n cut. After getting frustrated with the matts I took the plunge and bought a cricut air and have not looked back since. I will be making some christmas cards using the foil quill and images from design space this year. Take care
Did you tell the Circut that you wanted to draw? What weight is the card-stock you use? Thinking of getting it to do special Xmas greeting cards for family and friends. Thank You 🙏 for sharing ✨
I was able to purchase the standard and bold tips at a reduced rate and watched your video to learn the technique. thank you for this video. My results were good first try.
I was lucky enough to receive the foil quill for Mother’s Day. I have only used it a couple of times, I am very satisfied with the results. I can see lots of experimentation ahead. Thanks for your review.
You are fantastic at doing videos. The tone and volume of your voice are perfect. Your explanation of the product is very good. Really enjoyed the video. Take Care. ~Barbara
Excellent tutorial ! You explained each step very well. Cricut is always adding new “draw” files, so I think I’d use the Foil Quill a lot. Thanks for your time ! By the way, I noticed a 12x12 magnetic mat (on Amazon) that comes with magnets for holding the foil ... I’m not sure if the magnets would work as well as tape, but I may give it a try.
I was lucky enough to win a set and I love it. Haven't done too much with the cards but did make 60 nametags, all foiled and they were a great success. I found it quite easy to use and my favourite is the middle size. I love the mandala and plan on doing some in the future. The foil makes cards look so professional.
I just got one today and the first video I saw was yours It was awesome..so excited to foil everything now..While watching your video I was following you and It came out great I made my daughter a Xmas card with her Favorite cartoon Character and It was really Pretty she will love it...Thank you
This is great, thank you for your detailed video. LOL with your picture of your dog with the washi tape in their mouth. Thanks for a smile to start the day.
Hello Justine, Thanks so much for the tutorial and review. I just purchased my first Foil Quill tool to use with my Cricut Explore Air 2 .... (yes, i'm always late to the game, :)) Anyway, i was able to follow your tutorial easily and i appreciate your honest opinion. I'm curious how you decided to store your foil quill tools and also what do you do with your foils since they must be separated? I appreciate any ideas. Thanks again!
Wow that last one on what looked like burgundy cardstock with the gold foil was gorgeous. I do have the foil quill that you showed, but I'm in somewhat temporary housing right now and I don't have the space to use my brother scan and cut oh, so I haven't tried it yet. But I'm so certain that I will love it that I also got the freestyle foil quill. You guessed it I haven't used that one yet either lol. But I plan to soon. Honest I am. No really. lol. Have you by chance tried yours with Stampin up cardstock?
I bought the teal Foil quill about a week ago and I totally love it! :) I have a Silhouette Cameo. I have had stunning results with the vinyl you can buy to the Silhouette and I also have had gorgeous results with paper (both white and black)! I have also tried the Minc foil with the quill and that worked out great too! :)
So so glad you thoroughly reviewed this for us. I was interested, but knew I don't do well on "taking time out" to learn by reading instructions. LOL. So of course, as always ...you got your subbies covered🤗 with the lastest techniques and products. I love that it can do mandella's so well. I can afford to buy all the stamps..and didn't really Cricut had some great ones. So thanks for this one. Now all I have to do is tell ky husband I found my belated mother's day gift. Awesomeness Sauce...I know I'm corny😉
I was excited when I first heard about the foil quill since it will work with my Cricut; I like the idea of foiling but didn't want to invest in a whole new system. I got one a week ago but haven't had the nerve to get it out of the box yet. Thank you for showing how easy it is!
Thanks Justine, I have just got my Foil Quill, and as I have a visual memory this video has been very useful to me to commence to use my Foil Quill. I have noticed that you can only outline the drawing using Cricut. Have you explore the option to fill the image too? Silhouette software is more advanced and has a feature to fill the image to foil it later. You can draw, fill and then even cut. I believe that you can foil and cut with Cricut but the filling option is not possible. By the way, to cut the image after this has been foiled, it is useful to place the cardstock not at the top of the mat, hence once Cricut has finished foiling, you can easily remove the foil without removing the cardstock from the mat then you can cut it without problem. i would love to learn how to fill an image to foil it later. Thanks and happy crafting
Nice video, thanks for posting! Couple questions, please. 1. I am wondering if you think the reason the foil did not work on the other brand was solely due to it being a lesser weight than your brand, or is the brand of cardstock made by the same company that makes the foil and pen thus making it more compatible? Foil is kind of on the pricey side and I hate to waste by using the wrong brand material. May I ask please, what was the other brand you used? I use a variety of brands all with varying weights, so I guess what I am saying is, if you think the weight is relevant not the brand so much, then could you give us the weight of the cardstock that turned out well? 2. Do you find that applying more pressure is more likely to get a better impression or would making multiple passes? 3. You mention the foil that comes with the pen is different from the two brands you normally use, can you be more specific as to "how" it is different? I assumed as long as the foil was the type that needed heat to work, you could use it. I often use multiple brands when I know they're compatible and when I find a better deal on one over the other, but I don't want to buy say Heidi Swapp foil only to learn it won't work with my Quill pen. You know what I mean? And one more, please... 4. You mentioned that we must have our machine set to DRAW, not CUT. Does this mean we need to upload the image as a PRINT file or can we upload as a CUT file as long as we change it in Design Space? I have tons of my own designs I'd like foil but have uploaded them all as CUT, I don't really want to upload them again and have two of each...but I've been jonesin' for a foil fix 🤣 for so long that I will upload them again. OK, that's all I have. TIA for any additional info you share, and thanks again for posting such a good video!
1. Thermoweb makes foil, I don’t know the name of the type of foil it is but the foil needed for the foil quill or the glimmer machine is thermal foil. Thermoweb transfers through stickiness while spellbinders/thermal foil transfers through heat. 2. Multiple passes don’t work too well I find because my foil usually starts to come up. You could adjust your machine to cut one level deeper if you prefer (ex medium cardstock you could use heavy cardstock setting). I’ve never had an issue using the Cricut settings though. 3. See answer 1. 4. You can use the draw feature with any cut file.
Hi Justine 👋 thanks for sharing your thoughts on the foil quill such pretty end results I haven't got a foil quill machine but I have got the Gemini hot foiling press and I get pretty results useing that as always I am looking forward to watching your next lovely tutorial have a good week 🦋💞 Lin in South Wales uk
I have the equipment now to get brave and use it. My biggest problem is that I have to move my Cricut to plug it in to power. I keep it on a shelf so it’s always ready to go but not in the way but there’s no extra space. I’m going to give it a try.
I have one but haven’t used it yet. Have you had any issues with over foiling? I also have the Spellbinders Hot Foil system. I’ve found that if I have over foiling I can clean it up with a sand eraser. Wondering if the same applies to this technique. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks so much for your review and tutorial, Justine! I purchased this yesterday as like you, I don’t have a laser printer, so I’m excited to use it with my Cricut!
Thank you so much for this awesome video. New subbie here! I own a cricut and I just got a foil quill for an order of wedding invites I have. I can’t wait to use it!!
Thank you for sharing this. I have the foiling adapter for the cricut. Haven't used it yet, so found your tutorial very helpful. Was wondering if after done foiling, will the Cricut cut it out ?
Oh dear! U sweet lil thing! U pushed me over the edge and yes! I bought one! Lol just awaiting its arrival! Can u do a snippet of it writing for us? Or is it pretty straight forward? Thanks again! U r such a sweet inspiration! Can’t wait to try lol
I’ve bought the teal foil quill, but not yet able to use it as my decofoil did not work with it. So I’ve ordered the WRMK foil from Scrapbook.com Still waiting for it to arrive. Super excited to start using it.
I have only used my foil quill a couple of times but I like it a lot. I have a cricut and a scan n cut and I found I got the best results with my cricut so far. I got one of the USB things preloaded with images but haven’t figured out how to use it with the Cricut yet. Have you tried one yet?
I meant to say above that I’m sure the issue with my Scan n Cut is completely user error. I need to play with the settings some more. I don’t want to discourage any SnC users. 🙂
I hope the above is helpful. I have a Cricut Maker. I love foiling. i have the Spellbinder Glimmer. I was really excited about the Foil Quill but in light of this letter I will have to pass.☹️
I got this on Amazon for only $35, so much cheaper than anywhere else I saw it. I don't know why the price varies so much in different places. Anyway it just came yesterday and I am so very excited to try it! TY for the great instructions!
I own the original Silhouette with only one blade/pen holder. I may have to invest in this as I can use it to create wedding invitations. Alot of commercial invitations use foil and this would definitely enhance the script.
I got a chance to play with one of these, and I REALLY love the results, but I need to get to know how to use my machine (ScanNCut-first generation) a lot better before I invest in the quills. I look forward to seeing more pretty foiled projects from you (I like to live vicariously, what can I say?)
I’ve owned the scan n cut at one point as well. I chose it because I enjoy all the other projects it can do too. I enjoy making T-shirt’s, banners, home decor, etc.
Hello. If it possible if you can do one on one how to use Circuit machine. As I have circuit explore2 and I am having a really hard time using or understanding how to use it. I would appreciate if u can do few videos on them with step by step instructions. I love the way how you are explaining everything step by step so well. I know there are some video but they are not showing the computer as close up as you to understand better. Thank you.
You just have to search TH-cam cricut for beginners or some even have tutorials by category for example "design space" or downloading fonts into design space, I just follow along and pause or rewind as I need to. You can always search through comments for more help that people ask or respond.
Hi. I got the foil quill in medium. I select draw on my cricut and it goes over all the lines twice, making them twice as think. Even if I use really thin text it still does it. I wish it would only go over lines once for a more refined outcome. Any suggestions?
There is a filter button where I believe it says handwritten fonts or something in the font area. So sorry I’m on vacation and don’t have it here to check. But there is a filter. I import my own fonts often :)
I don't know why it doesn't good for me... Some lines are missing, like the cricut was drawing too fast so the heat doesn't apply great to the foil sheet... Any advice?
I have both the explore air 2 and the maker and never knew you could use the foil tools worked with it... so yet again guess what I’ll be buying next month when we get paid. Lol I really do need to limit how many videos of yours I watch each month 🤣🤣
Wow. Ok so you do not have to get the USB they are selling to go with the machine. That is awesome. Omg I think I am going to get it now. Thank you for sharing!
I just bought the set and I am very glad you put out this review. It definitely will help as I get started. I am excited to give it a try. I particularly want to foil and then ink blend or ink smoosh over it. Have you tried that?
Here’s link to Cricut letter to retailers: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0224/5205/files/Retail_Letter_re_Foil_Quill_-_Cricut_1.23.2019_1.pdf?18277304676756991682 This quote summarizes the letter: “Because the Foil Quill is outside the current intended use of a Cricut machine, using it in connection with a Cricut will, of necessity, void the consumer’s Cricut machine warranty. We encourage retailers to be transparent with consumers with respect to the warranty implications of using the Foil Quill, and allow her to make an informed decision.”
I think that it’s ridiculous. It doesn’t use the electricity of the Cricut, does not plug into the Cricut machine. It does nothing different than adding a pen to your machine. They’ll never know if you used it or not.
Based on your review, I may try this. I don't do foil because it requires special tools. But I already have a Cricut and use the write feature often. I will put it on my wish list. :D
You need to find a font that isn’t thick or an outline will happen, simply a normal font. Check also your system fonts. Some should be there. There is also a Dropdown-Menu for writing fonts
Hi Justine. Thanks for the Foil Quill review. As a FYI, I just wanted share a link to a letter Cricut sent to retailers regarding the Foil Quill. this was really helpful Justine and I'm super happy to hear it works with the glimmer and CC foils.
thanks zI got it !! 😍
I was able to purchase the standard and bold tips at a reduced rate and watched your video to learn the technique. thank you for this video. My results were good first try.
I showed up for the instructions, I stayed for the dog pic (I hope their tummy was ok!). Good explainer, thanks!
I've had my foil quill for over a month now and I absolutely love it, and it has made me fall in love with my silhouette all over again.

I tested out the magnetic mat with the freehand quill and it was awesome, not sure how it works with the machine.
I was lucky enough to win a set and I love it. Haven't done too much with the cards but did make 60 nametags, all foiled and they were a great success. I found it quite easy to use and my favourite is the middle size. I love the mandala and plan on doing some in the future. The foil makes cards look so professional.

Hello from Dallas just bought one tonight

So so glad you thoroughly reviewed this for us. I was interested, but knew I don't do well on "taking time out" to learn by reading instructions. LOL. Hi, I was wondering if this would work with infusing as well?
CUTE PUP!
Nice video, thanks for posting! Couple questions, please.

Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to find out what machine can do the cutting as well as foil.
Awesome tutorial, Justine! You sold me. I just ordered the Foil Quill starter set. 😁

This was a wonderfully thorough review! 😃💕
Not too sure how it would work. I think if you enlarged the cut file just slightly and chose cut instead of draw, it would work
Oh dear! U sweet lil thing! U pushed me over the edge and yes! I bought one! Lol just awaiting its arrival! Can u do a snippet of it writing for us? Or is it pretty straight forward? Thanks again! U r such a sweet inspiration! Can’t wait to try lol
Pretty straight forward, just need to change the writing to draw instead of cut on design space
Very, very helpful! I am going to use mine today. Thank you.
Thank you! Very thorough review
Thanks for this. I have been thinking about if I would like this or not and this was very helpful.
Hey Justine, would you do a video on embossing powders, how and why's. I haven't been successful with embossing. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Sure, I’ll add it to my list
I’ve bought the teal foil quill, but not yet able to use it as my decofoil did not work with it. So I’ve ordered the WRMK foil from Scrapbook.com Still waiting for it to arrive. Super excited to start using it.

Good Morning Justine. Why did you choose the Cricut machine...
I’ve owned the scan n cut at one point as well. I chose it because I enjoy all the other projects it can do too. I enjoy making T-shirt’s, banners, home decor, etc.
Thank you for this review. How do you make your cricut draw instead of cut?
Click on an object. There is a button in the top left corner that says cut on the main design screen, click and change to draw

Thank you.
Sure. I’d be happy to!
You just have to search TH-cam cricut for beginners or some even have tutorials by category for example "design space" or downloading fonts into design space, I just follow along and pause or rewind as I need to. You can always search through comments for more help that people ask or respond.
Justine, where do you get all the mandalas that you have on your Circuit?
@@spiritjunkie1913 Yes it does....thanks for sharing
I import my own fonts often :)
where did you get the metal piece?
Trying it right now.
I don't know why it doesn't good for me... Some lines are missing, like the cricut was drawing too fast so the heat doesn't apply great to the foil sheet... Any advice?
A great review. Thank you.
Awesome review
I have an expression 2. Am I able to create this??
I think, you can make gorgeous things with this, but I will pass on this. And just enjoy watching you making lovely things 🤩 thanks for sharing Hugs
I've been curious about this tool, thanks for the review!
Nope! Any USB port will do
I bought it love it !
I’ve been hearing something about it almost daily, wasn’t sure to get one or not ,I do have a Cricut but have a laser printer also.
Hmmm mine looks different than the one you use. Guess I better investigate to see if indeed it’s the same tool.
Do you have the freehand one perhaps? That came out after this one and doesn’t require the machine
I just bought the set and I am very glad you put out this review. It definitely will help as I get started. I am excited to give it a try. I particularly want to foil and then ink blend or ink smoosh over it. Have you tried that?
I haven't just yet :)
Video idea!

Here’s link to Cricut letter to retailers: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0224/5205/files/Retail_Letter_re_Foil_Quill_-_Cricut_1.23.2019_1.pdf?18277304676756991682
This quote summarizes the letter: “Because the Foil Quill is outside the current intended use of a Cricut machine, using it in connection with a Cricut will, of necessity, void the consumer’s Cricut machine warranty.
What did you mean about using a lazar Printer?
toner ink - laser printer
The adaptor set is now discontinued :(
I can't get my Cricut pen/score tool adapter out should my machine be off first it'rs really hard to push! :( any advice??
The first time you take it out it's a bit tough and I always do it with my machine off
I got one of these but when I changed the image from cut to draw, it did an outline rather than a single solid line. Any idea why?
The lines on the image are probably too thick, unfortunately. It doesn't work for every image
I’m having issues. DS goes to “preparing” after I press C to cut and an endless circle. Anyone have any ideas?
That’s a software issue by the sound of it. Try uninstalling?
Based on your review, I may try this. I don't do foil because it requires special tools. But I already have a Cricut and use the write feature often. I will put it on my wish list. :D
Did it work well on cricut cardstock?
Not too sure as I don't own any Cricut Cardstock
When I write show me double line, why?
You need to find a font that isn’t thick or an outline will happen, simply a normal font. Check also your system fonts. Some should be there. There is also a Dropdown-Menu for writing fonts
Hi Justine. Thanks for the Foil Quill review. As a FYI, I just wanted share a link to a letter Cricut sent to retailers regarding the Foil Quill. Here’s the link: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0224/5205/files/Retail_Letter_re_Foil_Quill_-_Cricut_1.23.2019_1.pdf?18277304676756991682

Lol. "My dog ate my washi tape". The perils of crafters with pets.
What settings did you use on the cricut?
You have to use the settings for what you are putting the foil on. If you’re using cardstock, put the setting for cardstock.
Just an FYI, if you use the foil quill in a Cricut machine it voids your warantee so....
I know but how would they be able to tell?
The video title is misleading, it's not a Cricut tool.
Hard pass for me. I have a Cricut and it rarely comes out anymore. I would much prefer a laser printer - I'm all about the multi-purpose tools! 🙃
Fair enough. Totally agree. To me this have me another way to use my Cricut, so for me it’s a multi purpose tool
Aaah I see your point!
Your voice over is way out to the video?
She seems to be knowledgeable, but I got bored really fast.
