How to Use the Foil Quill on a Cricut

  • The foil quill from We R Memory Keepers might be on your crafting wishlist. I am running down how to use this tool on a Cricut Explore Air 2.
    Please note that any use of an accessory that is not from Cricut will void your warranty and the quill has not been tested with the Cricut. Use at your own risk! Otherwise, have fun creating gold foil prints with your machine! Also, the quill only works with heat activated foil so be sure to buy the correct type!

    I'm posting this for anyone who is like me who is having trouble with the fine point quill tearing the foil. In my case, I'm using thin calfskin leather, approximately the same thickness as the thinnest tooling leather option from the material settings. I'm using the cricut maker 2. The issue, I think, is that the tip is too pointy. I have tried adjusting the material settings pressure but as this quill slot A for pens instead of slot b for cutting/debossing/engraving, I don't think that the changes I make to material settings affect the pressure of the pen. I have tried wetting the surface of the leather before placing the foil but that didn't help. I tried an adhesive spray for the foil but that caused flecks of foil to end up on the leather where I didn't want them. I have tried many different material settings. My solution is this: First, you need to have the foil as tight across the material as you can get it. Second, allow the fine-point quill to heat for at least 15 minutes. Third, select "Tissue Paper" as your material substrate. I believe it's the material with the least pressure the cricut maker applies, but I can't confirm that. Finally, and this is the tricky part but the part that actually got this working for me consistently, when you load the quill with the adapter into slot A, don't place it all the way down into the slot as far as it can go. Have the quill completely seated in the cricut adapter, but then have the adapter seated so that the top of the "C" on the adapter is still visible above the top of slot A. I have the top of slot A about level with the tip of the top hook of the letter "C", the top terminus of the line (hope that makes sense). You'll likely have to try adjusting how far into slot A you need to seat the quill/how much of the "C" you need visible to get that sweet-spot where it isn't tearing the foil but it is leaving complete, filled lines on the substrate. Once I did I marked the line so I could find it again. With this method I was able to get the thing working consistently on textured calfskin without tearing on a very small and intricate/detailed design. With the standard quill I was just able to use tooling leather setting and it worked great but was too thick for the details of the design. Haven't tried bold quill yet. Hope that this helps anyone having this problem.

    I am so, so happy that you made this video!!!! I watched someone else's video on removing the insert for the pen holder and I couldn't get it out I have the Maker. So I was disappointed that I would not be able to use the foil quill with my machine. You need to make your lines draw lines to use the quill and it will ask for a pen which you will put in side A. You are probably changing them to foil lines but that is for the Cricut foil transfer tool.

  • @joancook8454

    Did you plug the Foil Quill into the Cricut USB port? OR did you use another power source? I think the only concern for possibly damaging the Cricut would be using the Cricut as the power source. What do you think? Awesome tool & video. TFS
    Also I noticed you had the star wheels moved to the side, I guess they could leave marks on the foil, right?

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would plug it into another power source. I think the concern on the machine is the effect of the heat from the quill long term. And yes you will need to move your star wheels to the side!

      Angie Holden boooo, does it get extremely hot? And would you recommend using it? Or would it be better to use foil vinyl instead? I have a cricut maker

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does get fairly hot. They do have the guard with it. Depending on what you are making they have adhesive foil that looks really good and you cut it just like vinyl!

    Can you use 3 mm clear acrylic with this foil quill

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never used acrylic with it so I am not sure. 3 mm will not fit in your machine, however.

    Does it work with Cricut Joy? Thanks

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not tried that! I will try to put it in and see what happens. Maybe a future video?

    • @Sharonmarshall66
      @Sharonmarshall66 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I've seen of the Joy, it probably won't. The tool carriage is a different size from Maker and Explore Air 2. WRMK wouldn't have the time to release an adapter to work with the Joy just yet.
      Plus, with Angie's warning, it would void the Joy's warranty unless there has been an agreement between the two companies.

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sharon is correct! I will not be using my quill in my Joy at all. The carriage is a WAY different size and everything I have tried in it DOES NOT work but I have not pulled out the quill yet.

    • @xxxriotxxx
      @xxxriotxxx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The quills will fit in the Joy without any adaptor, however without an adaptor you will need to test depth (compare it to the pen the joy comes with) so it’s not too low or not in enough to hit the material

    Angie ,This is my first time watching your video . I love the fact you didn't edit your video and take out the fact that it ripped your first cut & you clarified why! There is a honest truth in your personally that some of the people's videos will never have . It is a quality you can't buy or fake . Thank you !

      @@AngieHolden did it come off easily??

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The residue did not come off easily! I do have a video on washing Cricut mats and that is what I had to do. You can see that here: th-cam.com/video/HPwrDUrQiyc/w-d-xo.html . My advice would be NOT to let the foil touch your mat!

    I love my cricut but frankly the Quill which I have been trying out isn't impressing me much. I've had fun with it but other things do just as good a job. Kinda feel like I wasted money.

    Great tutorial and very informative. My question is, why bother when you can use the metallic pens that do the same job? I can't see what the foil actually does different to pens, sorry if I have grasped the difference?
