Bought a couple of your books not realising there would be these great tutorials...so what a bonus; thank you for your generosity.
Just finished watching. Your clear, simple instructions, along with demonstration and showing examples from real books has made the task of making pop ups, (and in my case showing/inspiring kids), so much easier...
So lucky, technology such as TH-cam allows accessibility to all.

This is an amazing series. I decided to make my grandson a pop up book and realized that I needed to go back to actually make these pop ups along with Duncan. I bought his book and several others but seeing it in action is invalueable addition to seeing it print. Thank you so much for this series.

Me too. I bought the book but wished I could observe someone actually making the various pop ups. I did a search on the internet and was delighted to find that the same person who wrote the book I was enjoying had made tutorials on TH-cam. I’ve decided to make the pop ups he demonstrates and keep them as a reference. I learn better by “doing” rather than just watching.

I might have been five or six years old when I first saw a pop-up book. I was dazzled by it. Many years later, I'm just as amazed and delighted by pop-ups. The glimpses of spectacular pop-ups from books that were published a long time ago were fabulous! (And many thanks for providing such a wealth of information about the "basic rules" of pop-ups! I hope that with practice I'll be able to add pop-up elements to the cards I make.)

I've watched a few then finally watched your video showing how to make books for storing pop-ups (instead of stuffing them on top of books on my bookshelf) along with the explanation of how you have organized your videos into playlists, which was very helpful and useful. Now, I am being more systematic about watching your tutorials, including starting with this one to make sure I haven't missed anything. Really, really appreciate all of your time and expertise. I am AMAZED at what a gift the Lord has given you!! With making these and being a wonderful teacher at it also. You have a wonderful way of explaining the theory of pop-ups that I never new before. I have always, always loved pop-ups since I was very young. I never new how to make them. I took notes and saved your video. You literally took the time to start at the beginning to teach this. Thank you. One thing I liked alot was that you use a pen to score without ink. I was thinking I had to buy a tool that scored. But nope, and pen. The solvent-based glue is very important you
said. I need to get that. The galley and each side of the galley need to be balanced. I loved the 1930's pop-up book, I had wished you had turned a few pages in that one. This was all in just ONE video!! I learned so much in this 1st video.
    Thank you.

I have been dying to find easy to read instructions (I just prefer reading vs. videos) on making pop-up cards and any I found, either the instructions were poor AND practically every single one had ads surrounding every possible square inch of the article, were pissing me off and distracting as heck.

Just wanted to say a big thank you for making these videos. They helped me to understand the fundamentals. I also went and purchased your book. I appreciate how you get straight to the core mechanic without all the pretty pictures and fluff; it helped to understand ‘why’ a particular pop-up works. Most other how-to pop-up videos and books only provide the instructions on ‘how’ to create a particular pop-up. I’m looking forward to more; maybe analysis of specific pieces? Or, some of the more subtle questions that arise like ‘why are slots sometimes used instead of gluing?’, etc.
You’ve revealed the magicians tricks, but that’s OK because now I can create the magic!
    Thank You!

+oldspirit apodaca Thank you for your enthusiasm. I am interested in, and open to, suggestions for a follow up series. In the meantime hopefully this goes some way to answering your question.Slots or Gluing? - On some designs where fairly large planes intersect slots are the obvious solution, with a variation of the wing-tab joint holding the two pieces in place. However the answer isn't so clear when the issue is simply how to join two pieces of card - a glued tab or a wing-tab going through a slot. The advantages of using slots: You know the pieces of card are going to be held exactly where you want them (glued joints can slide around a bit before the glue sets); the pieces will move more easily as the spread opens and closes; no stress on the card so it will stay flat and not tend to bend, or if badly creased tend to open in a sort of half-hearted way (this can be a problem with some designs that incorporate numerous fiddly joints). The disadvantages of using slots:They involve precise measuring - fine if it's a die-cut commercial production but slow and fiddly if it's a one off home produced project, or an experiment, or a prototype design; slotted joints will have little tabs sticking out on the pop-up - this may be an excellent part of the design, or it may create a rather distracting messy effect.Glue: Quick; easy; adjustable; excellent for experiments and prototypes - But can be messy!
