    Thank you, Mr. Krause, for taking the time to do these videos. Your delivery is very clear and your information is extremely useful.
    I am almost 50 years old and my only time editing audio samples was when i used Fasttracker 2 on the Amiga around 1986-. (That was at a time when it cost a fortune just to sample 12 seconds of 44.1k quality sound on an Akai s1000).
    Things are much better today.......

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked up the Akai s1000 and it looks like it has been a really nice machine back in the days. And I agree, audio recording is much simpler now. Thank you for your nice comment, I'm glad you enjoy my videos :)

      My dad was a guitar player and set up a home studio in our house when I was growing up in the late 90's-early 2000's. With an 16 track Tascam MS-16 tape machine. 1 inch tape at 15 ips.
      Later on when sound-cards became more available he built a studio PC and used some obscure A/D sound cards via I think PCI or some other expansion bus. Not sure why he did that when I think in the early 2000's Digidesign had consumer interfaces, but I digress. I am unfortunately unable to ask him today.
      Your comment reminds me of all of this because when I inherited all of his stuff and inevitably got into audio. And other than all of the vintage guitars and amps, looking at all of the recording gear made me realize just how rough y'all had it back then. With everything we have today, I can fairly readily achieve what some would call a "pro-sounding" record with fairly little work and money in comparison to the insanity which is cutting tape and having to use some shoddy pre-amps from some random branded 16 channel console from the 1980's which looks like it was used more for budget live sound than anything else. It definitely wasn't no SSL. Looked vintage though. And was British. Noisy preamps though.
      What I find the most hilarious is how so many people say that "analog is better than digital" with a straight face. It's like yea... If you have hundreds of thousands of dollars at your disposal.. Maybe. All I know is, that everyone back in the day who was stuck using analog-gear would kill to have what we have access to today. And not only for the convenience. The sound too. Everyone back then was obsessed with getting the "most accurate/high fidelity" signal. Which compared to tape, digital is.
      Edit: Now I know why he didn't buy something like a Digi 001. They cost $2000 a pop back then.

    Hi first of all thank you very much indeed for this excellent video. And then a question related to these figures 5:21
    I have to measure noise with a laptop from some preamps outputs (with inputs shorted) So i am looking for a not expensive usb soundcard with a very low own noise. Do you think that the Behringer could be a good option ? and i guess i will have to connect the preamps outs to the mic in ? have you measure the sound cards noise with mic inputs shorted ? that would give the real sound card noise ? i am very obsessed by noise measurements these days. Very. Thanks a lot again. Kind regards, gino

    No complaints about the unit's functionality, it worked perfectly until two weeks after the one-year warranty expired, at which point it started emitting a howl during recording that renders it unusable. Steinberg Support put me through the inevitable drill of updating drivers and firmware, which did nothing to help, then declared the unit dead and ineligible for replacement. The support rep mentioned that he'd heard of this problem, and I found a few posts in forums describing similar issues. They referred me to a repair shop, which I called. The shop never heard of or worked on Steinberg equipment and their bench fee for diagnosis would equal the cost of the unit.
    Bottom line: Steinberg does not stand behind their product. A real engineering company would replace the unit and take mine back to the shop to determine cause of failure and fix any design flaws or choose more reliable components.

      Really depends on what your needs. If you want to record an already processed sound which you don't need to tweak much further in post, then the 286s might be a good choice. On the other hand, if you want to record the raw sound of your mic because you want to have the most flexibility in post production, then you don't need a 286s.

    I'm having some issues with this interface, which I haven't been able to solve yet.
    I'm using a condenser microphone (Audiotechnica AT2020) and cubase for recording and it's working flawlessly.
    The problem is when I use the same mic for skype, discord, messenger call etc. , or other softwares like obs Studio or audacity, or even when I turn the mix knob to the left, I experience a noise which can be ignored with great difficulty.
    Any help would be welcomed.

      Hey! Have you tried fiddling with the buffer size / latency settings? Sometimes you get glitches (with any interface) if your sample size is too small. I have one of these interfaces too and it works usually very well, but the preamps are noisy (compared to some other interfaces, but in everyday use it's excellent) and the headphone output is not strong enough to drive high impedance headphones. I would recommend you look at Motu M2 which is not much more expensive and has incredible specs (but also some instability issues). Or any interface from Focusrite.

    I used to own this interface. From my experience the preamp was superior to that of the Behringer UMC22, which I had also owned. I ended up selling it, though, because the headphone output was too low. The knob was all the way to the right and it was still rather quiet. I now use a Yamaha MG06X, which has the same quality preamp as the UR22 but a much louder monitor line.

    Talking about the pre amp noise performance, how does this affect a dynamic mic setup with the load on an external amp like: sm7b into cloudlifter into dbx 286 at 40ish db gain into the ur22mkii (either left at 0 or 2 ticks to reach the 18 dbfs)? Would a more quiet interface help with noise in this situation?

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not really. The first preamp in the audio chain is the main source of noise. If you use a Cloudlifter, which is essentially a very low noise preamp in front of the UR22MKII. Same goes with the dbx 286s, it has better preamps than the UR22MKII, so it can reduce the preamp noise. When you use a preamp in front of any interface, the noise performance of the built-in preamp becomes irrelevant.

    • @whizme604
      @whizme604 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JulianKrause Thanks for the clarification! One thing that always bothered me with this setup is that I still have to crank up the dbx more than I think I should. To make the 0 db light from time to time I have to set the gain to 45-47 db with the cloudlifter connected. I left it on the said 40ish now and raise the interface gain 2-3 dots to reach -18 dbfs.

    Great review! I am sitting here about to do some new investments as I go into music making in the older years. I will base my new setup around Maschine MK3, Complete Control S49, my macbook, some mics and instruments, and an interface. Have been close getting the UR22mk2, but then a friend recommended going for something like the Apollo Twin mk2, which comes in at a larger price. I can justify the difference if there's an obvious gain in terms of quality, and I am now a bit afraid of disturbance in the lower register since I will be doing a lot of work there. What would you with experience recommend me to go in terms of interface? I somehow like to idea to have a midi in/out, perhaps with little future needs.. I plan to have a mobil setup that I can use for both studio and live recording and performance. Thank you!

  • @DougGray-xf3hz

    Thanks for the first decent review of this interface I have found. Great job! One question about the EIN figures for the three units tested - if these are at ‘max gain’ as you noted then I would expect the measured EIN to be dependent on max gain, did you account for the actual gain in the EIN comparison? That is say if the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has 4.9dB less gain than the UR22mkII then would both measure the same EIN by your test? (No I don’t work for Steinberg.)

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, good question! Even though the EIN is measured at the maximum gain setting the resulting number excludes the gain from the equation. So, you can directly compare the EIN between different devices without having to worry about the preamp gain. Cheers!

My issue is that I don't have experience with either of them or the Audient and I feel like the noize level and the latency even with the lowest buffer size could be an issue. If only I had come across your video before I ordered mine. I was a silly person that was somehow not considering Behringer by principle, not trusting its cheapness. And here it turns out that what I thought was an overly noisy preamp really is an unnecessarily noisy preamp, and that I could have gotten a better product if only I had paid less. The irony of this situation is delightful.
    Welp, still in the return period, might as well make use out of that privilege... and swap for the UMC202HD, it seems. I take it that there's no real discernible difference in the quality of the preamp sound between the two, beside their noisiness?
    Also, could you say if the Behringer UMC202HD is my best bet at lowest selfnoise audio interface (in non-superpricey range), or are there, perhaps, other and better options for someone a bit obsessed with high quality signal?
    edit: Audient ID4 seems even more alluring than the Behringer, but I am not entirely sure how to interpret the fact that it has slightly worse noisefloor (-126 dBu) but better dynamic range (114 dB). Would that be altogether better and producing louder, clearer sound with more negligible background noise?

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the UMC202HD has lower noise preamps compared to the UR22 MKII. And yes it is the best bang for buck in terms of preamp noise performance. But keep in mind that preamp performance isn't everything. Things like ease of use and build quality are also important. If you use condenser mics, the preamp performance isn't critical anyways. So, it really depends on what you need. Both devices can record great sounding audio.
