In this video I compare the top 8 budget audio interfaces out there! I test the sound quality, microphone recordings, interface, knobs, usability, headphone level, and more. These are the best audio interfaces from 100 dollars to 200 dollars right now. And you can use this with Windows and Mac. These audio interfaces are the best selling and best quality for the price. Interfaces include the Focusrite Scarlett, Audient Evo 4, SSL 2, Universal Audio Volt 2 and 276, Arturia Minifuse 2, PreSonus Studio 24c, MOTU M2, and the Audient iD4. I even test the Scarlett Air, Volt Vintage, and SSL 4K recording modes so you can hear them side by side.

I've had my Motu M2 since the 2nd week it was released in May 2020 and I couldn't be happier with it. I love that it has a flat response without coloring the sound allowing me to tailor it how I want. I just recently picked up a Crandorne EC1 preamp (waiting for it to arrive) and I think it'll be a perfect fit for my unit.

Hi Sanjay, very cool comparison of these budget friendly interfaces. 👍🏻 Somehow I miss the Apogee Boom, which is also in this price range meanwhile. I have it and use it for vocal recordings „on the road“. In my studio I have the Antelope ZenQ, the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 primarily for external MIDI-modules and keyboards, a keyboard mixer so to say, and also the Mackie BigKnob Studio+, a Monitor controller that could also be used as an Audio interface, which I don’t do.
Honestly I didn‘t hear worth mentioning differences between these interfaces, but my very cheap Superlux headphones which I use with my iPad at the moment and my declining hearing ability (I’m 67) could be blamed for that. So far so bad, GAD. 😜

Apart from the Evo, I’ve had all of the interfaces shown here and the Arturia MiniFuse IMHO is by far the best of the bunch. I’ve got a MiniFuse 4 in black and it’s way better than I thought it would be. The MOTU for me sounded too bland - too neutral, if there is such a thing - the Focusrite’s headphone out just doesn’t cut it - whilst the PreSonus (while good) felt dated, as Sanjay commented on. My SSL 2+ was faulty out of the box - though I have used an SSL12, which is way better due to being 32-bit - so I returned it and the Volts sound great but, on a personal note, I just don’t like the design. If they’d looked more like the Apollo range, that would’ve better for me. Again, just my opinion, but the Arturia is great and I’d love a bigger AudioFuse model in the future.

  • @VeitLehmann
    @VeitLehmann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Wow, you have all the different interfaces that I consider upgrading to in the list! With the bluetooth Sennheiser Momentum 4 that I'm using right now, I can't hear a difference, I'll have to check again with my DT-880.
I will mainly use the interface to practice and record electric bass and guitar, and MIDI recording from my Kawai ES-100 (it only has old-school MIDI outputs, no USB) would be a nice-to-have. My DT-880 are high-impedance, so a powerful headphone amp is a priority. Also low latency, but I think pretty much all modern interfaces should fit the bill.
I'm leaning towards the MiniFuse 2 - really nice price to performance, ticks all the feature boxes including a decent headphone output and direct monitor mix. Runner-up would be the MOTU M2 which might sound a bit better, have a slightly more powerful headphone amp and lower latency. But it misses the direct monitor mix control and it's quite a bit more expensive.
Thanks a lot, this was very helpful!

Great review. For me the Volt’s external power supply option, which you don’t even mention, is its key selling point, because I primarily record to iPad and providing USB-power from my current interface (Focusrite) is a drag (yes, a poorly attempted pun ).
Of course I could also buy a USB hub but that’s a) more money and b) more cables to deal with.
A minus for me on the new Scarlett, SSL and Audient is the placement of the XLR inputs on the back. Having them on the front is more relevant for me and easier to handle in my recording space.

Thank you for this detailed review, Sanjay! For months, I've been researching audio interfaces, watching review videos, and comparing models. After ordering and testing several options, I ultimately decided on the Presonus Revelator io24. This classic 2-in/2-out interface with integrated DSPs can also be used for enhancing live streaming and Zoom calls. I've owned the Revelator for about a month now and am very pleased with its performance. It provides ample power to drive my DT990 Pro headphones to full volume. The interface also integrates smoothly with streaming software like OBS. Overall, the Revelator io24 has proven to be an excellent choice that meets all my audio interface needs. Pity you did not review it here, but all those interfaces will do the job pretty well too!

Regarding the "special" sounds (e.g., 4K, Air, Vintage), my take is 4K (by quite margin), followed by Air and then Vintage. I imagine my take might change, depending on what we're listening to. This typed, if I were recording, I'd never use any type of filter, as I'd want all sounds to be as clean as possible so that they can be saved as sources, which can then be manipulated as versions. As an aside, the SSL2+ has MIDI ports (and since you mentioned the Volt 276, I don't understand why this wasn't mentioned). Why didn't you talk about preamps? Out of all of these, the SSL2 probably has the best preamp, followed by the Audient. Love the meters on the M2. I don't know. My ranking might be SSL2, ID4mk2, Volt, M2, Focusrite.

Hey Sanjay! love your content and been following you since the very start of this channel. I am interested in purchasing volt 276 and want to know that does it supports 250 ohm headphones? Because I previously used 2i2 3rd gen and the volume was very low on my dt 990 pro 250 ohms on 2i2 3rd gen. Can you please confirm that will volt 276 support my dt990 pro 250 ohms headphones (in sense of appropriate volume output) or should I go with another option. Your response will be very helpful for me. Thank you 🙌🏼

Do any of these interfaces stand out as easier or harder to set up on Mac or Windows? Ultimately, I am hoping to buy one for use on both.

Most of the 2ins don't have the input/playback knob, generally the 4ins have it, so i've always got the bigger model. Motu feels 100% higher quality build to a scarlett and is suoer smooth and quiet. IMO, those air enhancements mess up the sound. I could write a book about why i will never have a scarlett again. (i ended up with an M6)
Edit: They all sound acceptable. Ya this scarlett sounds ok, m2 and audient sound good too. Others may be brighter and/or harsher. Fwiw, M6 has all cables out the back and 2 headphone jacks with separate volumes. It is so posh haha. Also a separate power supply and a power switch is nice vs usb power which can get really wonky and noisy when windows acts up and what if i'm practicing and don't need my pc on but i want to monitor? You can't with usb power unless you rewire. I could write a book....

Honestly it's quite hard to tell them apart. For me, as I was listening blindly at the last part, the SSL, the MotU and the Audient had a slightly more round feeling to the low mids. But at this price range I'd argue the choice of mic & good acoustics have so much more impact, that you could confidently choose your interface by how it appeals to your eyes.

I've compared the Scarlett 2i2 and SSL2 in person. They didn't come close. Focusrite is garbage, avoid at all costs. Honestly. I returned mine. The SSL 2 is the most accurate, high quality sound. Even the line outputs are more level. The Scarlett line outs are bass and treble boosted - not ideal for mixing work.

I had the SSL 2+ for just over two years and it died outright. There was no damage, power spikes, or other external insult that should have caused it to fail, but it quit outputting audio. I went through the process of checking cables, drivers, firmware, etc. but nothing could get it back. It behaves as if some internal component failed. Luckily for me, I had my old Focusrite 6i6 which the 2+ replaced and was able to use it instead. It has it's own issues, mainly that it periodically disconnects and has to be restarted (WinPC). I'm looking at a new unit going forward, but I'm inclined to spend a bit more money because my higher end UA Apollos (Mac) have worked for years without fail or glitch.

Ive been waiting for an api interface. liked the added modes on all 3 the scarlet would be my 1st choice that added dynamic charter modes then the volt even tho universal audio is known for this, then the ssl.. Had to put on headphones to make my choice's . but if i had to just by one consumer pro audio interface it would be the arturia mini fuse for its loop back feature & the software package great for the starting producer on a budget. you were totally right about the presonus being dated looks like the original audio box usb 96 just with a better meter section on it.. alway's like motu the motu brand since make of the unicorn there were like true pioneers in digital audio recording. and they just work.. Great review sanjay this should help budding producer make a good decision for christmas time.. by the way may you & daharti have a safe & beautiful holiday season. it's upon us now..

@sanjayC - you mentioned you used the sonible plugin? IF you used this plugin and did different things with this plugin on each piece of audio - could that be part of the reason the results sound so similar on the comparison at the end? I think the Arturia Minifuse 2 may have been thinner sounding than many of the others. Maybe the Evo 4 was lacking a little? Maybe the Motu M2 and Volt 2 sounded the best among this bunch? Wasn't so sure about the Scarlett 2i2.

As a streamer, I have 4th gen Scallett 2i2, UA Volt 2 and Presonus IO24. I love the $169 Volt 4 sound the most but it doesn’t have loopback which is a deal breaker. The $199 4th gen Scarlett would be a great choice if I record music a lot except headphone output, but I pick Presonus IO24 because of the software package included, loopback channel and easy to use Studio One and universal control software at only $139. I would pick the Volt 4 over IO24 if it has loopback function. I’ll test a few more days and decide if I should keep the Scarlett even though it’s overkilled for a streamer.

All of those "flavours" can be done manually using EQ and amp simulator software (which is all they are) after recording. They're not very good features in my opinion, as you can't undo them if you use them, but you can always add their tone later if you don't. I don't see any reason why an interface should give you anything but a clean signal.
Regarding the PreSonus 24c being quiet: their 26c, which is the next model up, has substantially more dynamic range on the mic pre-amp. They are the same pre-amps, so they must've nerfed the gain on the 24c as artificial market segmentation. If you really want PreSonus (their bundled software is good), consider stepping up to the 26c if you plan on using mics that might need more gain. I think the only other difference is it comes with two additional balanced 1/4" outputs, and it also pushes the price up close to the more expensive ones shown in this video, but still in the same range.
