I had the Revive mod performed on mine which affects the entire analog I/O path (Burr Brown/ Linear Tech components, power supply mod, etc). resulting in bandwidth/headroom improvements and surpassing that of all the higher Scarlett models. Spec'd to the moon and still the lightest interface in the game.

Great review, as usual. In the other hand, I would love to see a review of the ESI usb interfaces: Amber i1 and ESI U22 XT. The seem to be great products with good audio quality. It's a German brand, although I'm sure you already know it. The Direct Wire driver routing system is also impressive. Please make a test of the main products of this brand. Greetings.

Great review! But after following your excellent reviews for a while and after I tried quite a lot interfaces from SSL 12 to Prism Sound Lyra, I have to confess that what matters the most to me is simply latency, driver support, headphone amp. I would argue that you find decent to professional conversion and preamps in most of them. To make it short: Nothing beats RME. Currently I am using a Babyface Pro FS. It shines on all the before mentioned things and on top you have got a real powerhouse in terms of connectivity.

Hey @julian it looks like Focusrite have added some wording to battle your comments on the headphone impedance....
Loud and clear - with any headphones.
A custom-designed headphone amp design sets the stage for the best playback you've ever heard from a Scarlett interface, driving high-impedance headphones louder and clearer than ever before

I love how detailed data points you get. I don't think I've seen you mentioning audio interface support on Linux. I'm preparing to migrate mainly to Linux. I tried before but I couldn't get more than stereo in and out of my interface (RME digiface), but it could be a skill issue. Since you have more interfaces on hands, maybe you could bring some awareness on Linux support.

I think Focusrite could be much better with their interfaces. Also I don’t understand why they don’t have interfaces with more i/o 24 which they used to make. For small interfaces I would rather get a SSL or a Audient, better options imo. For 24 or 32 channels it’s RME and Ferrofish which are way better 😊

Great review, Julian. Some good, some bad, and even some ugly. Thank you specifically for pointing out latency mediocrity. Manufacturers such as Focusrite can leverage their broad range of high priced units to fix this at reasonable cost with dedicated DSP. I have a second gen 2i2 which is sitting right besides me, and I can guarantee that it already has separate volume controls, otherwise I would be unable to play electric guitar without unplugging the speakers first ... maybe I just misunderstood what you are actually saying, because it really makes no sense.

I have seen a lot of your videos and i feel i have this question that i would ask someone like you who seems to know so much... and maybe you could make a video about it. The question would be "which brand or model of interface you would choose if the most important factor for you was reliability(not to fail in any way and force you to troubleshoot or die) and life span of the an interface" My Scarlett failed few days ago(Actually i don't know if it was the interface or the microphone or the cable i don't have gear to troubleshoot the costumer service will deal with it) i had to ship it to the dealer cause it is within warranty for check and repair. I want my next interface and gear(mic, headphones and cable) to be trustworthy cause i don't want to get in this kind of trouble again. I am looking at Yamaha AG03 what is your opinion about it? I haven't seen anything from Yamaha in your content( I consider Japanese manufacturers very trustworthy but i am a complete noob regarding interfaces). So you could make a video about the most reliable gear instead of only comparing features and quality that may be interesting but i think there is plenty of that everybody does that. I admit not so deep as you do it but still nobody has yet covered the question i have. Assuming always that there is an answer for that because i know that in some cases there is not a straight answer. Keep up the great work!

Julian, can you tell me why the air mode does not turn on in the Focusrite Control 2 program?

To me, some boost of bass and treble with low impedance headphones wouldn't hurt :) On the larger interfaces, where you have enough outputs, I don't consider it as much a problem, because to me the internal headphone amps on these devices sound audibly worse than even lower range proper headphone amp.

Hey, been exploring a bit of audio stuff and found out your channel. I've recently heard about audiophile switches and knowing how ethernet works I'm pretty sure they are complete BS.
Definitely the digital signal quality has zero impact on the audio quality as long as all the bits are transmitted, but another part of the praise for audiophile switches is the fact that they also have have less electronical noise which could interfere with the audio... now, that to me seems at least plausible, but I doubt we're talking about perceivable difference (unlike what some people hear claiming au switches improve sound stage, claritiy and all that), but wouldn't it be possible to measure if there is any difference by simply feeding the output of various lan connected DACs to an input and record it?
