I understand the frustration of the phantom power. I remember reading in their official papers I believe it was noted that their switch was placed at the back of the device to prevent your ordinary average user from damaging a sensitive/cheap non-phantom microphone. Thanks very much for an honest, concise and neatly annotated video. You have improved my experience with not just this DAC but all of my audio tech. I encourage you to make more videos, to make them more concise, and to get hyped up!! :)
Hi kn0rkk, I truly appreciate the honest review you made for us, imo you presented a review with the good AND bad, but not biased in either direction. Thank you, you have helped me (and I'm sure a LOT more folks) make a decision on this - I'm gonna buy the Steinberg UR22. You have a new subscriber too!
Gotta say that was one superb review chap and very well enjoyed. I am just in the process of looking for a new Audio Midi interface and to be honest I used to have a Stemberg Live Drive Soundcard which was very useful years ago. But I went completely off Steinberg (apart from Cubase that is) when they messed about with their drivers as Windows brought more and more newer versions out along the way. So I ended up buying the ASUS Xonar HD 1.3 Deluxe Soundcard down to my disgust with Steinberg. The new Soundcard I brought was to cater for my Blu Ray more than anything as I had just built a new computer with HD in mind at the time. But being a keyboard player it was never a problem for my new keyboards as they had USB connections. But I also just recently brought the Alesis Performance Pad Pro recently and noticed it only has a Midi Out on it and no USB. Which is one of the reasons I am now on the lookout for another Audio Midi interface, and plus the fact that I mainly only play an acoustic guitar, I have just got myself an electric one. So I seen this as a Steinberg interface as a good thing especially as not even the FOCUSRITE SCARLETT comes with a midi interface on it for this price range anyway. until I seen your review here. For me I would much prefer to have something that works out of the box, than go through messing about with things to make it work, as you just showed here. I also agree it was perhaps silly of Steinberg not to see this problem in the first place, but like most company's they want it on the shelves and the money out of your pockets. I know you mentioned another interface in this review and will have to watch it again to find out it's name again. But I was wondering if you had anything else you might recommend.
Oh I have also seen this may not be an issue after looking at what Taylor Sappe posted and did not pay attention to your big sign whilst I was watching the review here. But anyway I enjoyed the review all the same, and good to have good people onboard with the comments and replies here...
Lee Lucas I am undecided weather i this review does justice to the interface. But since i feel like it could be a problem other people do run into i'll leave the video on TH-cam eventhough it might be a little harsh now that we fixed that "big" issue. I am pleased to hear that you did enjoy the video anyways ;)
Just bought this unit. Love your comments added after you figured out the simple fix :) Thanks internet! I'm going to be recording mainly midi (drums and keys) and vocals with this unit so I think I picked a good product.
Very nice review , you just showed everyone how every review should be made. Very in depth and plus offers solutions to some problems, keep up the good work :)
I've owned this interface for a little over an year now and would recommend it to anyone, works flawlessly and you just can't beat its overall quality in the price range. I also used to own a RME Babyface that is over 3 times more expensive. Thankfully both my electric guitars have rather low output pickups (below 10 KΩ on the bridge pickup) so the Hi-Z input level is not a problem for me.
Marin Dimitrov Can I ask what pickups they are? I use a stratocaster with mexican single coils (I assume they are low enough), an Ibanez RG320FM with stock humbucker pickups, and an epiphone 335 Dot with stock humbuckers. I also use an acoustic guitar with active electronics, but adjusting the level of that using the guitar pot won't reduce the sound quality. I'm sceptical of using the volume knob on electric guitars with passive pickups as this might reduce the sound quality and I like to change from an overdrive tone to a clean tone by using this volume knob so I want to keep that range.
UncleRob199 Sure, Lundgren 60s Vintage single coils (I believe the bridge is around 5.8k) on my strat and Bare Knuckle Black Dog (9.4K bridge) on my mahogany superstrat. But, truth be told, I don't use the Hi-Z button, I plug directly in the normal input and I'm happy with the sound. With the plugins I use (mainly Positive Grid Bias) I can't find much difference. You won't have any gain-related problems with it no matter how loud is your pickup.
Well, the RME is a better than the Steinberg but no way 5-6 times better as the price difference would suggest. I'm now using Audient ID14 which is still almost 3 times cheaper than RME but is (in my opinion) just as good, if not better - RME has a somewhat "cold" sound, not sure how to describe it.
Marin wow, really? I have never seen the audient before. It doesn't have xlr connections, right? I want an interface with it to record voice (also the jack 6,5 to record my guitar).
Thanks for the review. As to the inclusion of midi and the dedicated drivers, MUCH tighter than when using usb midi with generic class drivers. For those doing scoring, you'll notice a big diff using the 5pin connectors, especially the outs to a rack of modules (not so much for softsynths). As to the high-z, it's 1megohm. I verified with Yamaha and then noticed, it's on the ur22 manual and part of the block diagram too. As to a peak level clip indication with a 1megohm input (passive guitar pickups), that... to me... is normal. The factory would indeed calibrate the "analog" input of the high-z to sometimes fire off a peak indication... just like on a console. You're not in digital land at that point... it's all still analog. You didn't really mention if you were seeing occasional peak red clip blips.... or a big bright steady red (which would mean trouble). When you open your software (say Cubase) and observe the incoming level when you strum, I bet that will also show you that (in tandem with the occasional red peak lights lighting up on the ur), the incoming levels are at normal places. In my years of using consoles, occasional clips into the red (analog) were/are perfectly normal. At the point of the guitar connected to the UR (analog), that is where I'd also expect to see those occasional peak indicators fire off. That being said, there are bunches of inline solutions to pad a guitar-level signal. Such as Electro-Harmonix Nano Signal Pad Guitar Pedal or other similar things. I though, think the ur is behaving normally. And there are times when you don't WANT to turn down the knobs on your guitar. If you want them all on 10 (and some people hear a diff that way through amps or software vst amps), then re-visiting the assumption that the ur22 peak is supposed to fire off at 1megohm heavy strummed signals... then you may re-evaluate what you're hearing. This sounds like a cool box. I though, have been a/bing it with a Tascam us366 which seems to have equally good sound and build, with a lot more I/o and sync capability. So many interfaces, so little time.
Great video...Thanks. I was actually beginning to look down on my ESI 1808 and considering UR 22. I don't have the clipping issue on Hi-Z on my audio interface.
0:12 to be fair, sound quality depends far more on the microphone and mastering than on the ADC nowadays. The real world sound differences between all 100+$ interfaces have become so small that they are barely audible when using the same microphone.
@@kn0rkk I think that's more a problem of the amp circuit than of the actual DAC, though. I have used my UR 22 MkII with a dedicated headphone amp from the line outputs and it's pretty much indistinguishable from a real headphone DAC this way. The Ur 22 just seems to have a shitty circuit for amplifying enough when it comes to high-impedance headphones like my DT 990.
@@gayusschwulius8490 My AKG 712 shouldn't be that hard to drive(62 Ohm impedance) all I can say is that my Objective DAC sounds much better. Even without an AMP. Not sure what the cause is in the UR22 (Mk1).
I use this interface to record guitar, and another thing you can do is use your FX Loop to send your guitar preamp directly to the Input 1 and just use a VST power amp and cab simulator, works well for me
Hi. Excellent video and workaround. I hope you can help me with the following question. During my long research phase (I heard about the guitar clipping and was looking for a solution before buying) I noticed something you won't find in Steinberg's website anymore: the original specs from the UR22 back in 2013 were 470 kOhm and a gain range of +8dB - +52dB for the hi-Z input! (I have the original PDF). Given the dates you mention in the video I think yours might be one of those original units. It seems they upgraded to 1M Ohm resistors and 0 to +40 gain around mid-2014. I'm looking at the new UR22-mkII and the UR12 which have the latter specs, and may work well out of the box. Do you happen to still have the original manual that came with your interface? It could help me to try and determine if the input in the new ones is better. Thanks!
For the clipping problem, couldn't you just turn down the output level on your guitar? Also, 2 other issues I would like to address: I have 2 UR22s and on both units the connections are tight. Could your test model be defective, or did they come out with a fix in a newer model? Concerning the MIDI input: Prior to owning a UR22, I had a CI1, which had no MIDI input. However, when I used a keyboard with a USB it disabled the CI1 or the CI1 would disable the USB MIDI input, I couldn't use both together to record MIDI and audio simultaneously. The UR22 allows for simultaneous recording of bot MIDI and audio.
Mhh i have to admit you got a point there ! I will definitly try to reduce the volume on the guitar would be way easier eh? Does the volume pot change the tone at all? Well i will hear that once i tested it ;) Ok now on to the inputs i believe they were always i little loose not really sure though... it's been 6month :D I have to admit that i don't own a midi-device but from the research i did i thought that you don't need midi inputs... Well thank you so much for your input! Really helps me out! I will add those informations to the description in the near future!
kn0rkk I wasn't sure if the guitar volume pot would change the tone or not. Normally I like to record with the guitar volume full, but if it clips with the UR22 input reduced, the guitar volume change would be the next step. After that, the sound is routed through the virtual amp rack and tweaked to personal taste. I must admit that I haven't tried any of the suggestions you made, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. If you or anyone should happen to do a comparison before I get the chance, I would be interested in knowing the results.
Taylor Sappe Ok i did i little bit of testing and so far i can't hear a diffrence... boy that makes me feel kinda stupid :D I guess the connection between gain and volume was just too strong in my head... i feel like a total beginner :D Well i guess that changes pretty much everything ! Thank you so much for pointing that out haha ^^ I put a notice in the video so that everyone else will see that solution ;) I also put your name hope that is ok for you ;)
kn0rkk It was never my intention to make anyone feel stupid. It seems that everything involving recording and music is a constant learning process. I am thankful for this video and the opportunity to put our heads together to find the simplest solution. It always has been and continues to be a constant learning experience for me. Experimentation and comparing notes with others is the most effective way to learn.
fantastic bit of kit and if you experience any latency problems then turn off monitor in cubase and use the mixer to hear the dry signal from your mic or guitar with the tracks playing back.Generally you will have to turn the mixer more to the input side:0)
+kn0rkk I believe the "clipping" issue, is because you have the phantom power switched to on, and that gives 48v boost to both channels!.. thats why the guitar with the additional power from the hi-z, is clipping. Try without the phantom power on. (this is just a guess... but its what comes to mind inmediately, when both channels gets phantom power.. and theres only one on/off switch!.. a bit pain in the ass, having to turn it off every time you're done with vocals and want to record guitar.. also, recording both, would be a bad thing! :(
Love the sound of that guitar mate. Great piece of equipment. I have a ur22mkii and am currently trying to figure out how to stop playback skipping whenever I minimise a window. I've tried increasing buffer size but I'm way out of my depth with this stuff and was wondering if you had any tips.
Congratulations! Excellent review. Have you been able to record voice and guitar in two separate tracks at the same time? I really need to know. Thanks a lot.
Hi, you will need a Daw of some kind. There you need to create 2Tracks and set diffrent inputs for each track. That's it. However the Steinberg doesn't have internal routing so you cannot record the sound that is send back to your speakers. So if you want to make a screen recording it's not possible to record the guitar sound and the screen with your screen capture. You will need to record it in your DAW and render and sync it later.
Joel Bertell Hi, i can't answer directly to your comment.. don't know why. Regarding your question: Yes you can use it with the windwos OS. If you really want to and google a bit you will even get it working on linux.
the difference between USB connection (direct to PC) n Midi connection.. you can minimize the process of your CPU if you are using Midi connection and run from the Steinberg DSP and not using the USB instead.. so you can optimize the CPU Usage for your PC..
I don't think there is a diffrence in performance. All the audio-interface can do is convert the analog midi signals to digital ones and send them on to the host. I don't see how the interface could process the midi signals to take load off the CPU. I mean there is nothing to process all you do is convert the signal and send it on so it can be used as input for some programm (which in turn runs on the CPU). But maby i am missing something so correct me if i am wrong :)
Hi! Loved your video, very professionally done! I have this interface as well as the Blue Baby Bottle Mic. I really want to use it to record audio for my DSLR. How did you do it in your video? Is the interface hooked up to your camera, or are you recording audio and video separately? Also I really liked how your lighting looked! What setup are you using for that? Thanks for all you help!
Thank you nice to hear! Just as you guessed i record video and audio separately. The audio on the camera is for refrence only. But now that i think of it it might actually be possible to plug the interface into the camera. The problem is that the pre-amps in DSLR are pretty bad but if you boost the signal beforehand it might work. I will try that and get back to you once i know weather it acctually works (i am kinda busy atm but i should have some spear time on sunday to do some testing). Now for the lighting. I used 2 Softboxes i just bought for about 70bucks. They are so bright that i needed an ND-Filter on my f1.8 lense to get the proper shutterspeed. I might review those in the future. If you have any further questions feel free to ask :)
kn0rkk Thanks so much! I really appreciate your response! Yeah, I'll probably do audio and video separately. It probably wont be to crazy hard or time consuming to line them up. It'll definitely be worth it for the superior sound! Thanks for this info on your lighting! I'll look into that! I've got a 1.2 lens, so would suggest a filter?
Luke Standridge Well it does take a little bit of time to sync everything but if you clap once you start recording you should be fine. You only need a ND filter if you want to shoot wide open (so at f1.2). That is because the shutter speed is supposed to stay around double the frame rate (25fps means 1/50 shutter speed) in order to create a natural motion blur. If you ever go outside you won't be able to use f1.2 and 1/50 shutter without a ND-Filter. I use a variable ND so i can adjust to most light situations.
kn0rkk Ok so i tried to run the signal from the interface back to the camera... but there is sooo much noise that the signal is not usable! Guess the signal comming from the headphone out is simply too weak. So i'll keep recording audio and video seperatly
Thankyou for that in depth video. You explained peaks, D_PRE, Hi-Z and 48v very well. I have been struggling for 2 weeks to get this box to record either mic or my fabulous Lowrey organ. I will try (before committing suicide)! to set up this magic box, based on your expert tuition. Will let you know if you have solved my problem. Many thanks.
Hey man, Can you please upload a vid demonstrating how to modify the instrument cable the way you did? I know there is a sketch that was uploaded. But i feel like a video demonstration would be freaking awesome. It would definitely help me as im sure it would to others in my position and your past. If you would rather not that is fine as well. Either way. Thanks for the in depth review!
Hello Kn0rkk, you'r video gonna be really usefull for me, I should have the UR22 MKII for christmas, and it will be my first sound card, so im surely gonna be lost ! I will return on you'r channel see other video next week, thank again for your advices
So, I have a question about the monitoring. When the dial is set to the "input" side for real time monitoring, does the sound then only come form one side in your headphones (because the mic is plugged into one input) or does the sound come from both sides ? Nice review btw.
Thanks for this mate! But turning the volume poti of the guitar down will not only make the signal more quiet but also changes the sound of the guitar itself (less trebles). So it's better to turn the poti up fully. And better use a DI-Box as you described ;)
Thank you very much for this review! Very complete and helpful... I actually wanted to buy that interface, now im getting second thoughts... I don´t record any guitars, but i record a nord electro4... Do you think i would have the same problem with the hi-z function? What other interface would you recommend for voice and keyboard?
Hey, I'm considering buying this and I'm curious why your the only one I've came across complaining about the high z clipping. All other reviews I have seen have been positive. My go to guitar is a Jackson Slat7 with active EMG'S. Do you think I would have the clipping problem?
I'm 10 minutes into the vid... because of the issues do you recommend the focusrite Scarlett 2i2 instead? Some of the reviews on various websites (like amazon etc.) of the focusrite interfaces say that the drivers are terrible. Apparently, the focusrite has amazing studio quality pre-amps like the U22 does, but the U22 has PRE-D, which is apparently even better.
Hi, since i don't have the 2i2 i can't really tell how it compares ;) Since i realised that you can simply turn down the volume knob... i havn't had problems with clipping ... just didn't think of it at the time i made the video.... However one thing that bothers me now is that there is no internal routing. As you can see these are problems you encounter when using the interface for a long time. I am sure you will also encounter some issues with the 2i2. However i am sure that you can get great recording out of both of them ( if you know how to :P ).
kn0rkk :) After further research, I am now sold on the focusrite 2i4. It also comes with a bunch of plug-ins (compressor EQ etc). It's on the way! Thanks for your reply!
@@jocelynepierre9890 It's been great. I'd like to say that I've used it a lot more than I have, but the handful of times I made the time to record stuff it has always been great. With technology where it is now, everything is getting really good now, as long as it is bought from a reputable company, like focusrite, that isn't turning out a bunch of cheap garbage. The model line I have has been replaced/upgraded (a year or two ago?) but I don't know what they changed. I think if you go with focusrite or M-Audio its gonna be good quality, but M-Audio is in the business of overcharging drastically for everything. focusrite is known for having the best preamps, period. So you really cannot go wrong. And I wouldn't buy a presonus.
So, i first want to say thanks for addressing this problem, after looking about everywhere, i finally came across this video and it defiantely told me what i needed to do. But i do have some further questions. 1. Could i use CARBON resistors instead of metal 2. Do you know of a vst/tool that would accurately display to signal of the input in my daw (so when i adjust the volume knob i could be as specific about the strength as possible) 3. And would i need to dedicate a cord for DI purposes only, so that my signal going to a amp wouldnt be altered I use Cubase AI 7, seymore duncan JB's, emg 81 noiseless active, and i use peavey revalver as well as other vsts, any info would be great, thanks
'Volume knob' on guitar is a bit misleading, as it is more of a 'gain knob' that you can use to get that distorted sound or to clean it up (when your signal goes into a driven/distorted channel/amp).
Hey, good review! However, I do have some questions. I got this for my birthday and I just installed it all. But when I try to record my guitar, it's like the sound distorts and it doesn't sound pure and professional like it should be. And another question. My USB light on my interface flickers. Yours doesn't. I hope to hear from you soon!
A "DAC" is a digital to analog converter. A preamp prepare an electrical signal for further amplification/processing. There are different kinds of preamps designed for different uses.
x BublizZ there are preamps for recording and for listening. and in the latter case they are called headphone preamps designed for more expensive higher quality headphones. and there are preamps for stereo systems like this. media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/bc/b2/d0/bcb2d04f09fcf92883d9144df679dcea.jpg (the above piece is the preamp in this case) But is it required for a good experience? well.. its normally buildt in to the same box in a normal amplifier anyway so you won't have to think about it. On audio interfaces like the one show in this video the preamp there is for mic and line input wich is for recording. but it can also act as a preamp for active monitors or a stereo. so if you can listen to music at all, you already have a preamp. Well of course listening to a live band you only need your ears. Hope this helped! :D
Which audio interface might be next in line without the problems mentioned here like leaking mixknobs and clipping, different preamps and so on? Also, I've seen reports of the UR22 having some low frequency noise due to lack of power supplied by the usb ports. So i guess with a good motherboard and PSU that wouldn't be an issue. but it also seems that noise problem was only present in an old batch, so it might not be present in the ones sold today. An example can be seen here: /watch?v=qa0_Hs1e-7o Maybe you can confirm if this is still present or not?
Hi, srry that it took me so long to reply :( I can confirm the results shown in the video you metioned. However as also seen in the video the low freq. noise is at it's peak around -60dB which is ,at least for me, totally accaptable. It was acctually kinda hard to find a eq that goes down to -60dB an beyond... i couldn't find a boost in at low freq (or any other for that matter) however i don't havn't done any real messurements... Anyways thanks for pointing that out !
FreeDooMusic Mix knobs are ESSENTIAL! A leaky mix knob is most likely a bad manufacturing run. I read the same complaints on my alesis io2 left and right. And my io2 has never had the problem. I don't think it's a design flaw if a ur22 has it, just a manufacturing defect, and it should be returned for a better unit
vforvillain77 I'd rather have different routing options than a mixknob such as this. But it would seem within this price range you can't expect everything to work as intended.
Daniel Kim Hi, i don't have a guide but it is pretty straight forward. Plug it in, install driver and choose it as an input device in your Daw. Well to be honest i don't feel like turning the device on and off when using phantom power. I just activate it when needed. The sound level drops significant for 1 or 2 second and then everything is back to normal. same with phantom power.
. I'm having the same issue peaking on 3 input gain, BUT only when I'm using a PC that has a 2 prong power adaptor. When I connect the ur22 to a laptop that has a 3 prong power adaptor it doesn't peak until just over half way on the input gain.
my guitar has a signal output knob - modulator ,as well as treble and pickup style. will it be able to produce a clean signal with the Z ? Also awesome video.. i was looking at the focusrite corner, and my main concern was the quality, but as i can see probably 2i2 is not a good go..
Mate you are doing a great job!! I need some advice. I have a Boss ME 25. How well a UR22 would work with it. would you recommend I can use the ME25 to get rid of clipping issue? my most important question is, Is there any latency issue for guitar with the free cubase version you get when run on Windows? please help before I put my money on this. thanks :)
Hi +kn0rkk i would like to ask you some things: - will turning back the volume on the guitar affect the tone ? - is the HI-Z channel making use of the yamaha D-PRE preamp or is it using another one? - I would like to buy this interface and use it with an XLR-TSR cable for the guitar to make use of the powerful D-PRE (if it`s not active on the hi-z channel). Is it ok to do this? Thank you very much for your video. It`s very helpful and well made. Cheers man !
Hi! Nice video bro! I have one question... The Phantom power affects the two channels? What happened if I have to use one condenser mic and one dynamic mic? Thanks bro!
+ChecoRobles Great Question.. yes phantom power does affect both channels. However PhantomPower won't damage dynamic mics you can use that no problem. (I have personally used dynamic + phantom Power and everything is still working just fine ). But if you happen to own a ribbon mic ... PhantomPower will basicly rip that apart ... soo yeah you couldn't use ribbon+ phantom Power. Great Question hap planed to include that but obviously forgot to so thank for bringing it up!
+ChecoRobles Yes the phantom power is universal affecting all channels. There are two types of Dynamic mics. Moving coil and ribbon. Moving coil mics (SM58...) reject phantom power without being affected at all. No problem at all there. Most Ribbon mics (Cascade FatHead...) and phantom power do not get along. Though it is best if you can, to not use universal phantom power with ribbon mics. Either plugging or unplugging ribbon mics while phantom is engaged will cause damage. If you need to change out a ribbon mics, turn off phantom, plug it in, turn phantom back on, then nothing will happen.
only problem that i found with this unit is that if the phantom power is left on too long the whole unit blows up. sending mine out for service now but not a very good impresson if you ask me.. sure its written in the manual but how many people actually sit down and read the user manual. consumer beware if you buy this don't leave your phantom power on or youll end up with an expencive paper weight
Hey man. Thanks a lot for the video, I think I'm going to get this one from Thomann. Anyways, I'm pretty new to guitar (I've played piano for 10 years now, but still) and I got a 2-coil pickup. Is this interface enough to power up the signal to recordable levels? Cheers!
@@mashpotatosauce3566 Yes sorry I didn't see your comment both guitar input and vocal input have a lot of headroom before they clip and the interface is still working exactly like when I got it 5 years ago :p I think they made a revision so if you buy one it might be a bit different then mine but I assume its gonna be for the better!
So the first channel is Mic input the second is a Line, yet the +48 effects both side? Interesting, Also I plugged my SM57 MIC to channel one and could receive NO signal what so ever, I plugged it into channel two with the Hi-z function on and I did receive signal. I was confused about that. Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advanced for the answers.
Nicholas Drake Hi there, great questions! As far as my understanding goes you only get phantom Power on the xlr-inputs. So you shouldn't run in a conflict if you use a condeser mic and a guitar. The Hi-Z function on the other side works only for the instrument in. The SM57 is a dynamic mic (so it doesn't need phantom power) but it doesn't get damaged by phantom power. As long as you don't have a ribbion mic (or some real exotic other mic) you shouldn't run in any conflict regarding the phantom power. But as always that just my understanding and i am by all means no professional ^^
No you won't need it if you are micing up a real amp. However you will need a really good amp and a decent micophone. Unless you have a good tube amp and a good cabinet the amp simulation sounds better. At least my solid state amp sounds worse than the digitial one(TSE x50 v2 in my case). But again nothin beats a real tube... Kemper gets pretty close though...
kn0rkk Well the plan is to mic up my JCM800 with a shur sm57. i got the sound i want n feel using amp simulators would be kind of silly when the sound i want is right beside me. thanks
Aaron Mifsud Sure that should work great. But expect the miced sound to be a lot diffrent from the sound that you hear in front of your amp. But there are tons of good tutorials/explainiations of how to mic an amp so i would recomend to get down basic knowlegde of mic a cabinet ;) Kind of obviouse but first time i miced an amp i just through an headset mic infront of my amp... didn't sound to bad actually :D
Thanks for an honest review. Great job :-)
I understand the frustration of the phantom power. I remember reading in their official papers I believe it was noted that their switch was placed at the back of the device to prevent your ordinary average user from damaging a sensitive/cheap non-phantom microphone.

I truly appreciate the honest review you made for us, imo you presented a review with the good AND bad, but not biased in either direction. Thank you, you have helped me (and I'm sure a LOT more folks) make a decision on this - I'm gonna buy the Steinberg UR22.

Very thoughtful, informative video! I just got this the other day, and this will be very helpful.
Lee Lucas
I am undecided weather i this review does justice to the interface. But since i feel like it could be a problem other people do run into i'll leave the video on TH-cam eventhough it might be a little harsh now that we fixed that "big" issue.
I am pleased to hear that you did enjoy the video anyways ;)
Just grabbed one of these used, this review is much appreciated!
Thank you very much for this video! Actually was exxactly what I was looking for, very helpful!
Hey your English pronunciation is very good, I hope you keep uploading reviews! Thank you for the review of the Steinberg UR22
Marin do you think the rme is way better than the Steinberg?
Well, the RME is a better than the Steinberg but no way 5-6 times better as the price difference would suggest.
I'm now using Audient ID14 which is still almost 3 times cheaper than RME but is (in my opinion) just as good, if not better - RME has a somewhat "cold" sound, not sure how to describe it.
Marin wow, really? I have never seen the audient before. It doesn't have xlr connections, right? I want an interface with it to record voice (also the jack 6,5 to record my guitar).
Very nicely explained, short and to the point, excellent review, thanks!
Great video. I will do what you suggest by adding the resistors to the plug line. Great fix.
thanks for your review, you definitely answered most of my questions. I hope i can get one of them delivered to Colombia
You're very good at doing reviews. Nice video. Thanks :)
thank you! ive been looking for this fix for quite a while haha
Awesome vide. Just bought the ur22
Lux Amator same cant wait
Very detailed and thorough review! Good one!
thanks for the overview, it was very informative and straight forward!
Well made video. Good usage of side chain compression as well.
Thank You for this in depth and objective review of a product I have been considering to buy. Excellent presentation. Again, thank you.
recognize that come clarity riff from a mile away
Great video...Thanks. I was actually beginning to look down on my ESI 1808 and considering UR 22. I don't have the clipping issue on Hi-Z on my audio interface.
Great review. Great reviewer will keep attention to the channel
very nice video man, i just bought UR 22mk II and its amazing :)
6:20 searched through my music library to find the name of the song, i knew it had to be by In Flames and it's Come Clarity!
nice taste in music! :D
0:12 to be fair, sound quality depends far more on the microphone and mastering than on the ADC nowadays. The real world sound differences between all 100+$ interfaces have become so small that they are barely audible when using the same microphone.
True. But i was actually surprised how much better a proper Headphone DAC sounds compared to the Steinberg interface headphone output.
Not sure what the cause is in the UR22 (Mk1).
awesome review and information! TQ for the video
I use this interface to record guitar, and another thing you can do is use your FX Loop to send your guitar preamp directly to the Input 1 and just use a VST power amp and cab simulator, works well for me
IMO, a well presented, informative review. Thanks! :-)

Nice review. Well done!
Daymn! That mic quality is crazy! :)
Thanks!
Thanks for doing this video
Thank you buddy !!You helped me a lot!!
Thanks man! You saved me 50€ or more with this simple fix of Input 2 ;)
Great review. You're voice/accent is fantastic.
+Ell Kent thank you!
Well i will hear that once i tested it ;)
Ok now on to the inputs i believe they were always i little loose not really sure though... it's been 6month :D
I have to admit that i don't own a midi-device but from the research i did i thought that you don't need midi inputs...
Taylor Sappe
Ok i did i little bit of testing and so far i can't hear a diffrence... boy that makes me feel kinda stupid :D I guess the connection between gain and volume was just too strong in my head... i feel like a total beginner :D
Well i guess that changes pretty much everything !
Thank you so much for pointing that out haha ^^
I put a notice in the video so that everyone else will see that solution ;)
I also put your name hope that is ok for you ;)
kn0rkk It was never my intention to make anyone feel stupid. It seems that everything involving recording and music is a constant learning process. I am thankful for this video and the opportunity to put our heads together to find the simplest solution. It always has been and continues to be a constant learning experience for me. Experimentation and comparing notes with others is the most effective way to learn.
Taylor Sappe Well said! Couldn't agreed more with that statement.
fantastic bit of kit and if you experience any latency problems then turn off monitor in cubase and use the mixer to hear the dry signal from your mic or guitar with the tracks playing back.Generally you will have to turn the mixer more to the input side:0)
Thanks Bro, good review.
great review, question what camera are you using?
Love the sound of that guitar mate. Great piece of equipment. I have a ur22mkii and am currently trying to figure out how to stop playback skipping whenever I minimise a window. I've tried increasing buffer size but I'm way out of my depth with this stuff and was wondering if you had any tips.
Congratulations! Excellent review. Have you been able to record voice and guitar in two separate tracks at the same time? I really need to know. Thanks a lot.
Hi,
you will need a Daw of some kind.
If you really want to and google
a bit you will even get it working on linux.
I notice that you're using the first model. Have you tried the MkII and if so what are the differences?
the difference between USB connection (direct to PC) n Midi connection.. you can minimize the process of your CPU if you are using Midi connection and run from the Steinberg DSP and not using the USB instead.. so you can optimize the CPU Usage for your PC..
If you have any further questions feel free to ask :)
kn0rkk
Thanks so much!
I'm sure that the volume pot on a guitar (at least one with passive pickups) affects its tone so its probably not an ideal fix for clipping issues.
great help...thank you!!!
Nice one! thanks!
That sounds like KMFDM , I like!!
Nice playing!
Either way. Thanks for the in depth review!
hey when i put my nose up to the back of the interface it has an electric smell to it is that normal??
Hello Kn0rkk, you'r video gonna be really usefull for me, I should have the UR22 MKII for christmas, and it will be my first sound card, so im surely gonna be lost !
I will return on you'r channel see other video next week, thank again for your advices
Nice, dude... InFlames rule !!! : ) awesome vid too.
And better use a DI-Box as you described ;)
im using the mkII version and dont have clipping issue . maybe it got fixed over the version. very good inferface!
Great review! I'm not a guitarist and barely a keyboardist but very high quality video and great information especially with your fix! Very nice job!
Hello I got the same issue. Which DI should I get ? DI can get real expensive, will a cheap one will do the trick ?
I don't understand, even if you turn the preamp down the clip indicator still lit? With it turned off it still "clipped"?
Thank you very much for this review! Very complete and helpful... I actually wanted to buy that interface, now im getting second thoughts... I don´t record any guitars, but i record a nord electro4... Do you think i would have the same problem with the hi-z function? What other interface would you recommend for voice and keyboard?
Hey, I'm considering buying this and I'm curious why your the only one I've came across complaining about the high z clipping. All other reviews I have seen have been positive. My go to guitar is a Jackson Slat7 with active EMG'S. Do you think I would have the clipping problem?
Why not building and adapter that would contain the resistors without having to modify the cable?
does the ur22 have enough gain for gain-hungry mica like the sm-b, or would I need a cloud-lifter?
great review!
thank you
I'm 10 minutes into the vid... because of the issues do you recommend the focusrite Scarlett 2i2 instead? Some of the reviews on various websites (like amazon etc.) of the focusrite interfaces say that the drivers are terrible. Apparently, the focusrite has amazing studio quality pre-amps like the U22 does, but the U22 has PRE-D, which is apparently even better.
Hi,
since i don't have the 2i2 i can't really tell how it compares ;)
Since i realised that you can simply turn down the volume knob... i havn't had problems with clipping ...
just didn't think of it at the time i made the video....
@@StratMatt777 How was your focusrite 2i4 ?
1. Could i use CARBON resistors instead of metal
2. Do you know of a vst/tool that would accurately display to signal of the input in my daw (so when i adjust the volume knob i could be as specific about the strength as possible)
3. And would i need to dedicate a cord for DI purposes only, so that my signal going to a amp wouldnt be altered
I use Cubase AI 7, seymore duncan JB's, emg 81 noiseless active, and i use peavey revalver as well as other vsts, any info would be great, thanks
And is it possible to daisy chain and use multiple of the ur22 unit
Does bringing the volume of your guitar down change the tone of it ?
'Volume knob' on guitar is a bit misleading, as it is more of a 'gain knob' that you can use to get that distorted sound or to clean it up (when your signal goes into a driven/distorted channel/amp).
Can this be used for ripping vinyl ?
The peak light flashes at -3dBfs
Hi , I have just got one of these an it isn’t working the usb light is just flashing on an off , any ideas please
Thanks for your video. It's very helpful.
Can you recommend which one is better, this one or forcusrite 2i2 gen 2? Thank you.
What's the difference between a preamp and a dac?
A "DAC" is a digital to analog converter. A preamp prepare an electrical signal for further amplification/processing. There are different kinds of preamps designed for different uses.
FreeDooMusic So would you need a preamp for a good music listening experience?
x BublizZ there are preamps for recording and for listening. and in the latter case they are called headphone preamps designed for more expensive higher quality headphones. and there are preamps for stereo systems like this. media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/bc/b2/d0/bcb2d04f09fcf92883d9144df679dcea.jpg (the above piece is the preamp in this case) But is it required for a good experience? well.. its normally buildt in to the same box in a normal amplifier anyway so you won't have to think about it.
An example can be seen here: /watch?v=qa0_Hs1e-7o
Maybe you can confirm if this is still present or not?
Hi,
srry that it took me so long to reply :(
I can confirm the results shown in the video you metioned.
Anyways thanks for pointing that out !
kn0rkk I hope they stop using that kind of mixknob in the future tho. or add an extra step on it with 100% on/off
FreeDooMusic Mix knobs are ESSENTIAL!
According to the caution notice, it says that you shouldn't turn on the Phantom power when it's on. Does this apply to the Hi-Z setting?
Do you also have a user guide tutorial for the interface and how to actually record?
Daniel Kim Hi, i don't have a guide but it is pretty straight forward. Plug it in, install driver and choose it as an input device in your Daw.
Well to be honest i don't feel like turning the device on and off when using phantom power. I just activate it when needed.
The sound level drops significant for 1 or 2 second and then everything is back to normal. same with phantom power.
Just curious, what microphone are you using there?
Which is better between Scarlett 2i2 or Steinberg ur22?
if you run a guitar through an amp that has a line out which goes into the interface would you need the hi-z then?
Mate you are doing a great job!! I need some advice. I have a Boss ME 25. How well a UR22 would work with it. would you recommend I can use the ME25 to get rid of clipping issue? my most important question is, Is there any latency issue for guitar with the free cubase version you get when run on Windows? please help before I put my money on this. thanks :)
Hi +kn0rkk i would like to ask you some things:
- will turning back the volume on the guitar affect the tone ?
What about phantom power with tube mics? Is it needed or no?
only problem that i found with this unit is that if the phantom power is left on too long the whole unit blows up. sending mine out for service now but not a very good impresson if you ask me.. sure its written in the manual but how many people actually sit down and read the user manual. consumer beware if you buy this don't leave your phantom power on or youll end up with an expencive paper weight
you got a bad one never had a problem with mines 3yrs now and stays in constant use. Iove this thing made put the avid box back in the box
Hi. Do you use active or passive pickups? Could be the clipping caused by high output level of your pickups?
Hey man. Thanks a lot for the video, I think I'm going to get this one from Thomann. Anyways, I'm pretty new to guitar (I've played piano for 10 years now, but still) and I got a 2-coil pickup. Is this interface enough to power up the signal to recordable levels?
Cheers!
and what is with the latency? is this have a lowest buffer size limit or it depends on the cpu how low it can be?
so its not usable for guitar ? or i dont get conclusion properly, with fixed cable, its good yea ?
Welp i just bought it and i dont even have a clipping issue so everything is good :)
So it’s been 6 years, did u ever have a clipping issue?
@@mashpotatosauce3566 Nope never

@@mashpotatosauce3566 Yes sorry I didn't see your comment both guitar input and vocal input have a lot of headroom before they clip and the interface is still working exactly like when I got it 5 years ago :p I think they made a revision so if you buy one it might be a bit different then mine but I assume its gonna be for the better!
@@keven444 thanks!
Will turning on the +48 feature effect both input one and two? Or will it only effect channel one?
The Phantom Power will effect both channels.
Nicholas Drake Hi there,
great questions!
Thanks
Do you need the Hi-Z function for micing a guitar amp?
But there are tons of good tutorials/explainiations of how to mic an amp so i would recomend to get down basic knowlegde of mic a cabinet ;) Kind of obviouse but first time i miced an amp i just through an headset mic infront of my amp... didn't sound to bad actually :D
kn0rkk Yeah I did 12 months at uni studying sound engineering (though I failed) I did learn about mic placment and EQ,
Thanks for ya help mate.
is your voice edited? also i would like to know what is better your mic or ath 2020?
