    For the problem for very loud noise you probably need to disable the loopback function because if you enable loopback and at the same time using monitoring input in your DAW it will cause loud noise. Here is excerpt from UR22 MK II manual. " When using the loopback function, turn off the monitor functions on your DAW software. If the loopback function is on while you are monitoring input signals form the UR22mkII via DAW software, it will cause loud noise. This is because an infinite loop of the audio signal is generated between the UR22mkII and the DAW software."

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In normal operation, I don't tend to form feedback loops or loopbacks when using 2x2 interfaces. You'd have to try pretty hard to accomplish a feedback loop, by plugging one of the inputs into one of the outputs and turning on direct monitoring. Now you can get a feedback loop pretty easily if you're outputting to speakers and have a live microphone on direct monitoring. Maybe that's what they're talking about? I've definitely done that before :)

    • @jonthongpradit
      @jonthongpradit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You misunderstand. I did not refer to feedback loop. Here is from the UR22 MK II manual.
      "What is loopback?
      Loopback is a convenient function for broadcasting over the Internet. It mixes the input audio signals (such as microphone and guitar) with the audio signals playing back in the software in the computer into two channels in the UR22mkII, and sends them back to the computer."
      The UR22 MK II has this functionality where you can set it ON of OFF by accessing the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver window (on Mac: Select [System Preferences] [Yamaha Steinberg USB]). It should be set to OFF when you are not using this functionality. I have no idea if this is the case for you or not but it just caught my eyes when I read the manual and thought it might help. May be you should get the manual from Sternberg web site and read it by yourself.

      I think thats a great idea. Ive started to doubt my own claims of limited headroom when running off of bus power. Id love to do some experimenting. Although it'll have to be with my Rubix22 since I gave away the UR22mkII and my 2i2 doesn't accept aux power. I'll add it to my list!

    Thank you for breaking down how the power option affects headroom!
    I definitely see the same issues you described! I’ve debated whether I should get some extra pieces like DI boxes or preamps to help combat the headroom issue or maybe getting a auxiliary power supply but I think I’ve ultimately decided to get another interface altogether! Would you happen to know of a similar interface that doesn’t have issues with headroom? I play guitar on the bridge humbucker with considerable gain and the steinberg doesn’t handle it well at all haha

      I've heard people mention it so often that I didn't even think to try it myself. Heck, it may just be a wives' tale now that I think of it! I'll have to do some experimenting to see if I can prove or disprove that theory that you get reduced headroom when on bus power.

      I've been having lots of weird problems with the MKii lately. For example suddenly my vst tracks started bleeding into my mic tracks, and during video calls (I use it for skype lessons) the second channel suddenly stopped working (it works in a DAW, but not during a call). Gonna try the new drivers, hope that fixes it. Thanks a lot

    Kinda makes me glad that I got the Scarlett. No problems whatsoever. Basically a plug and play with out pulling my hair (or what's left of it) out.
    Too bad about the tech support trials and tribulations. I can honestly say that I'm a Sweetwater fanboy. I recently bought some software from them and was having a problem installing it. It all boiled down to my not knowing what I was doing. I called the tech at Sweetwater and he literally installed it for me. I can't say enough good things about them.

    Is the Steinberg UR22 mkII Recording Pack good for a beginner home studio (asking for all three devices: interface itself, mic and headphones)? I have acoustic guitar and Yamaha Clavinova which I'd plug it in to the Steinberg interface. What are your thoughts? In short: is it worth it for a beginner as myself?

    I'm looking to buy a Torpedo Captor to connect to amp to my Steinberg UR22C.
    Generally I connected my guitar straight to the AI with Hi-Z on.
    My question:
    How did you connect the Torpedo with it's XLR to the Steinberg's line without using another preamp?
    Or how did you solve the problem of the Steinberg's input being too hot for the Torpedo?

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I first ran the line output of the Torpedo right into one of the line inputs of the UR22 via an XLR to TRS cable. Even at the lowest gain settings, it was too hot for the line input. So I ended up running the Torpedo into an external preamp that has an output level control, so I could control the signal level hitting the line input on the UR22. That ended up working well. The Captor might have better output level controls on it than the Torpedo, I'm not sure. Hopefully you don't run into the same issues!

      Agreed, it seems to be a mistake that these 2x2 interfaces keep making over and over! This is the 2nd revision of the UR22 and it's still an issue. Same for Focusrite: the 1st and 2nd gen 2i2 has the same issue, even though they supposedly addressed it for the 2nd gen. It boggles my mind!

    When I connect keyboard in input it sound in MONO! WHY???? Solution?

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How are you connecting the keyboard? If you're using 2 TRS cables into line inputs 1 and 2, then you can create a stereo track in your DAW and assign input 1/2 to it. Or create 2 mono tracks and send input 1 to a track, pan it hard left, and send input 2 to the other track and pan it hard right. As far as direct monitoring, the inputs are summed to mono when monitoring.

    I just got a new Steinberg UR22mkII. Everything works fine, but every now and then I get a metallic sound on playback...whether it's something I've recorded or just audio from a video I'm watching on youtube. Anyone else have the same issue? I'm using a Mackie 1402-VLZ3 mixer that runs to my Steinberg.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have your speakers plugged into the UR22 or the Mackie? Gut feeling is that it's a phase or latency issue caused by direct monitoring but that's just a guess.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'd take a look at your direct monitor control on the UR22 and make sure that it's turned off (all the way to DAW) and see if that helps that metallic sound. I usually get that sound when I make a mistake in my routing somewhere and leave more than 1 monitoring option enabled (like monitoring both through the interface and through software). And when you do get some proper monitors, I'd suggest plugging them into the UR22 instead of the mixer, just to simplify the path.

    This might seem like a very unsophisticated quesiton but I have never before used an interface and recently purchased the uk22mII and a microphone. When using cubase however I cant seem to be getting any signal from the mic, even though the settings should be correct. Could any of you come up with a reason why this is?
    I dont have any headphones or boxes plugged to the output but that should really be necessary to simply record something, right?

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As you get more comfortable using this equipment, you'll get used to this troubleshooting process:
      - Start at the front of the signal chain and ensure that you're getting signal each step of the way
      - When you speak/sing/yell into the mic, does the signal/peak indicator show any activity on the front of the UR22mkII?
      - does adjusting the input gain make any difference in the signal/peak indicator or what you hear in Cubase?
      - Make sure Cubase is set up correctly to expect input from your interface and to send output to your interface
      - Is your track set to expect signal from your interface? Do you have the correct input selected?
      - Is your track armed for recording?
      - Do you have monitoring turned on for that track? Or have you tried direct monitoring from the interface?
      Hopefully as you work these steps you'll find where the signal is being interrupted.

    Hello and merry Christmas to all who are celebrating!
    Im new to recording instruments. I have recording my guitar with Rocksmith Real Tone USB Audio Cable, Reaper and Guitar Rig simulation amp. It was good for the beginning but now i wish something better. I have read some reviews on product for recording. And narrowed search for UR22 MKII. I have washburn wii66 pro guitar. With Seymour Duncan '59 reissue pickup in the neck and Seymour Duncan Custom Custom pickup in bridge. Is there gona be problem with recoring this guitar. In the future im considering to buy Rode NT microphone for recording acoustic guitar. and vocals. Is this good device for home recording or i should consider buying other products.
    Thanks!

      For 2 inputs, any of these $150-ish interfaces will be fine. I've used a few of them now, and it's a neck-and-neck race amongst them. For 4 inputs, I can't imagine that they're all that different aside from input/output count and routing options. They all sound fine, so just pick one that has the connectivity that you need.

    Yeah I think this box sucks. I had an entire project damaged because of distortion through the "amazing" Yamaha pre amps or whatever else is going on in there. Vocal recording had distrotion throughout that I didn't notice until putting through signal chain (compression etc). Was NOT recorded hot plenty of headroom. I don't know what TF happened but I am PISSED.

    I need really urgent help with UR22.
    I've been using it for over 5 years and i never had this problem before. The USB white light isn't stable, it's blinking and the laptop doesn't recognize it all of a sudden. I tried reinstalling the drivers and that didn't help. Does anybody know why this can be? I can't do anything without it.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was having trouble connecting this UR22mkII, it was because it wasn't receiving enough power over the USB connection. Try the micro-USB power jack as an auxiliary power source. Try a different USB cable. Bring it over to a friend's house and try connecting it to their computer. There are several things that it could be, so you'll have to start troubleshooting and rule out one thing at a time.

      Ive had this happen a few times each time I unplugged the ur22 then deleted the driver and shut down PC. Once restarting PC I reinstalled the driver it came with and plug the ur22 into a different USB port on PC and all was good after a day I reinstalled the latest driver and all has been good now. Like I said I've had this happen 3 times in 3 years... Good luck it's a pain when it happens...

    I am a total noob on this. I finally decided to start recording ideas,using 7 string guitar. That guitar asks for a very heavy sound. Do you suggest this Steinberg or should i try something else in that price range. Please help on this with your experience, cause i'll get some device in 2 weeks. Thanks in advance and thanks for your videos. :D

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I hear "7-string guitar", I think metal music. And for metal music, I think "active, high-output pickups". Given what I experienced with the UR22mkII, the headroom on the instrument inputs was pretty low. I'd think that would be problematic if you're recording a guitar with hot pickups direct into the interface (instead of miking up an amp). The 3rd gen Scarlett range promises higher headroom, although I haven't tried one myself. I found that the Komplete Audio 2 had a nice amount of headroom in my testing. Or maybe an external preamp or a direct box with some sort of gain control on it might help it get along with the UR22mkII?

    Wait, you put a direct signal into input 1 and it was overpowering it so you didn't think even for a second about using input 2 which has an instrument input with a hi z switch instead?
    oh and your channel is about home recording?
    Not trying to be a dick here but how do you have any followers with such a basic mistake? Granted this is from 2018 so you'll likely never see this comment but I'm truly confused. That is what the Hi Z is for. Not just instruments direct in, but for anything that is to hot for the normal mic level to handle properly.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put instruments only into the Hi-Z input. Not sure where you got that I was putting it into the low-Z line input?

    • @majkon93
      @majkon93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just tried it and it clips when Hi-Z is activated, gain set to 0 but the signal is distorted during palm mutes. In my case it sounds better without Hi-Z, I know it doesn't make sense. Oh and I don"t have hot pick ups in the guitar, quite the opposite.

      @loneponderer495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@majkon93 Thankfully some amps can now be set to line level making them easier to use. Using guitars with interfaces have been a bit of trial and error until you get it right.

    • @majkon93
      @majkon93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loneponderer495 You mean amp simulations or actual amps? My tube amp doesn't has this kind of output. I want to record a raw signal directly from a guitar (monitor it with neural dsp plugin) and then in DAW shape the signal with effects. But the raw signal itself is already clipping.. I don't get why it needs a DI box to level an input signal when the audio interface should be working out of the box.

    • @loneponderer495
      @loneponderer495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@majkon93 I mean some actual amps. Sims are in the computer so you have to go through an imput to use them. I have a Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 it has this feature and some others also do. It isn't super common yet but you can find it if you look around.
