Some medical detail: the olfactory system is the oldest (evolutionarywise) of our five senses and its information enters directly into the limbic system without being "filtered" by the thalamus before - so that's why scents lead to such a strong emotional reaction, positive or negative.
It’s a bit dated now (and never qualified as posh), but when I was barely old enough to see over the bar at my local pub and order my own pint, “Sunflowers” by Elizabeth Arden was very popular amongst London’s younger ladies. Here we are a couple of decades later and when I smell that scent I’m immediately transported to sunny days, wine in the park, bright blue eyes, and warm soft kisses. Scent, and music, rekindle youth as surely as any mythical fountain.
This video is very timely given that I have a bespoke consultation at Floris in one week’s time. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since booking it in April. Cheers Tom, and cheers to The Rake team.
@@rovercoupe7104 It went great. The perfumer who did my consult is the gent responsible for the new Golden Amber scent. I’d wholeheartedly recommend it. Wonderful experience, and the cologne I left with is superlative in every respect.
Great to hear from "Mr Floris" himself about the processes and ingredients. I have been a devotee of Floris since working in St James's just before the pandemic. I am still using No.127. Apart from anything else, the scents themselves are not particularly expensive. You get more bang for your buck with proper fragrances rather than the mass-market stuff, where the budget clearly goes more on creating outrageously contrived advertising (however much I love the Gaultier ads for sheer entertainment value and humour).
Mr. Chamberlin thank you for sharing this historical, cultural integral alchemyst/parfumery that is totally English and the very best. All the best always and a happy autumn/fall of 2024.
Another wonderful video, this time about my favourite perfume house. First off, the music that was selected as Tom walked into Floris, made me smile. Instant thoughts of The Ladykillers, and the music that Alec Guinness, and his 'musician' friends were 'playing', made me chuckle. Loved every second of the interview with Edward, and I even sprayed myself with Golden Amber. A big well done to all the production team, Tom, and of course Edward, for granting the interview.
Lovely video once again. Thank you very much Tom and The Rake team for bringing us these videos. I was wondering when Floris was going to be covered and here it is!
My friend worked on an ad campaign for Floris years ago and they came up with some joke slogans and fake magazine ads when they were bored. The only one I can remember now is "If your bits smell like a skunk, get some FLORIS on your junk"
Oh for a phone menu Olfactory option! I hope to learn as I start watching the video again that there is some discretion. Maybe it's me, but I'd like to take my choice of scent to the grave. After all, one doesn't disclose who makes one's underwear, does one‽

Great video, as always. However I have to say that Tom’s style (his jackets in particular) are so far away from my taste. He looks 20 kgs heavier that he is. Not my idea of elegance.

Scents evoke memory as well. My mum always wore Chanel no 5 and my father always used old spice and I associate those two scents with home.

Splendid episode. My fragrances are Special No. 127 and Honey Oud . The Special No. 127 is a particular favorite.
Exceptional presentation and information. Thank you for sharing this terrific interview.

Floris 89. Never leave home without it.
When I stayed at Claridge's they had Floris soap in the bathroom. Cefiro is one of my all time favorite soaps.
Fabulous scent!
Excellent videos Sir. No Old Spice here🧐
Haven't been in Floris for about 20 years, yes did buy 89.

Quite wonderful. I love all things olfactory. And such attention to details evokes class and refinement with heritage entwined.
I love smelly things too

What’s your second favourite?

Great episode.
Just a note, I would not say the world oldest perfumer…, Santa Maria novella in Tuscany was founded in 1221 😅
Arabs and Indians were making perfumes thousand of years earlier. In the GCC many families have their own formulas which they fumigate.
Great video as usual 👍
THE BOTTLE OF BERGAMOT; IS WHAT I WISH FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR ! EXCELLENT SUIT; TOM !
Honey Oud is my favourite
Great video idea, I'll have to visit in person.
I've been waiting for more information about Floris...... amazing.
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing!
Cheers from Brazil!
Floris my favourite English brand.
I wear Floris Cefiro every day
I do enjoy No. 89 and Special No. 127. Only wish the latter would last longer; it doesn't seem to last more than an hour or two on me.
Did they discuss Improvements for British Airways first class? Did they discuss the best Michelin star dish of the year? Did they discuss?
what was the context of that last blooper? WHO was useless. I must know! hahaha
George IV
Can you make an episode about Sir Elgar? I think he was one of the most elegant English gentlemen of all time.
I have been using Floris soap for many years. It is a shame - I believe their prices have almost doubled since 2019.
❤AWESOME 👌
I adore Floris - Elite is my standard go-to cologne, shaving soap and shower wash.
Malmaison was my fragrance. Not available over the counter any more I understand.
It's available in the Ledger Series as an 'Encore' scent.
WANT GOLDEN AMBER!!!!!!!
It's an amazing scent.
Like if you went immediately to Floris’ website and dropped > 3 bills just to see what all the fuss is about.
The thumbnail photo led me to believe this video was about the symptoms of jaundice.
Subtle lighting inside, sir, as in the best establishments. Note the colour change of his rather dapper suit jacket; before and after.

Every time he says "golden amber" it sounds like "Goldmember" (Austin Powers movie) to me. I'M SORRY!
