From IWS (Institute for Wildlife Studies): "Thank you to Nicole (U.S. Navy) and Sean (Crew Leader for IWS' San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike Project) for putting the Bald Canyon chick back into the nest and making some nest upgrades."
One one the Bald Canyon nestlings fell off the side of the nest sometime between 4/30 and 5/1. Dr. Sharpe was able to contact the Navy and obtain permission to access the area.
Today 5/2, Nicole (U.S. Navy) and Sean (Crew Leader for IWS' San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike Project) rescued and renested the chick.
At 3:43 in the video Nicole checks both wings and gets bitten for her efforts. 😊
One of the parents (possibly Dad) came back to the nest about 13 minutes after the ladder was removed and fed the rescued chick shortly after.
Resident female: unidentified, possibly Chinook A-32 since 2014. Chinook hatched in 2004.
Resident male: unidentified, possibly Tuqan K-76 since 2014. Tuqan hatched in 2007.

The Bald Canyon Nest is located on San Clemente Island, CA. The island belongs to the Navy. IWS obtained special permits to install the cam.
FYI: these rescuers are expert technicians, scientists and PhDs who know what they're doing. They do dangerous work in order to Protect wildlife. All of this takes money, so, please, if you can, donate money to these organizations because we need these Heroes.

To be fair to the Bald Canyon eagles, there is not much “lumber” on the islands. It’s mostly small oak trees, bushes and poison oak. 😊

Truly SPECTACULAR...so very gentle was this woman and just look at how that baby looked at her...priceless...What a memory for her to have gotten..now this was the best purpose for phone's I have ever seen. What a wonderful joyouse outcome. I forgot to add, the care of placing those extra rails for these babies was incredible and to see the size of that nest next to a human...WOW. Thank you with joyful tears in my eyes.
Not all heroes wear safety harnesses either! I was getting queasy watching her let go of the ladder while working on the nest.
The way the baby would go from defensive mode to “wait hold on will you feed me?” back to defensive mode over and over is adorable.
Gotta love how the chicks seem to fall asleep in sync! Too much excitement, must have a nap immediately.

“Get closer you big two legged and I’ll rip your arm off!! I got my eye on you.” Little guy was doing their best to be intimidating. Don’t know how long they were hanging there but they could have been a little exhausted too.

Poor little Eaglet was so tired from the whole ordeal that s/he immediately fell asleep. Thank you to the rescue team. ❤ I could never climb that high.
It's amazing how they both put their heads down and go to sleep at the same time as soon as the heroes leave 😴❤
What amazes me is that this little sweetie is not scared of the rescuer.
This scene is typical of any Eaglet in the nest confronting an intruder--Stand up , mantle wings wide and strike an open beak pose. I myself think it's instinctual and have seen it when E's are banded--all will do likewise if more than one in nest. Baby Storks are an exception--very meek when picked up for banding.

@@nicoleterio2963 Most of the Raptor family will do that as well. Chicks--hawks, owls etc. Golden Eagles in Europe are (as adults) particularly nasty. One in Romaina--few days ago--a dad sitting on 2 eggs, flew off nest in pursuit when another intruder Eagle flew in . Moments later came back to nest with its' talons full of white body down and fine chest feathers crammed in it's talons(indicating a Juv or Y adult GE was the intruder. Happy to help educate others as others have given out info to me over the yrs.
You are so right, not all heroes wear capes. This rescue was so amazing, that little eaglet had no idea how much it was loved. I was so thankful to see those protective railing being put into place. Thank you to this dear rescuer and thank you, Cali, for sharing this with us.

Thanks for Posting Cali. Good job on fleshing out outer limbs of nest by Res. Person. Looked like only left side was smooth and lacking enough railing for normal chick activity but since E fell down opposite side and got stuck, shows a lack of caution for a E unless P hooked it with a Talon flying away. and pulled it off Front side. Great Rescue here. Happy This Nest got necessary Paperwork for rescue in time. before the E dislodged itself and fell to ground.

This was truly an awesome and amazing rescue ever!👏🏻👏🏻🥳🦅❤️. I truly have the utmost respect for these two gentlemen for going up to the nest to rescue this Eaglet who was stuck and unable to move or even eat. I also want to say that Super Heroes don’t always have to be cartoon ones and that they can truly be human Heroes too. These two gentlemen has shown a great example that yes, an Eaglet can be rescued and also go through the legal ways of doing things to help an Eaglet and that to mw is all the other nest humans need to do too. As you know @Cali Condor, this nest is near and dear to my UCSB ❤… lived in Santa Cruz dorm my freshman year. Loved my view of the Channel Islands. Thankful this rescue was a success.

Gosh they're so cute, and very fierce! Glad the litte fella was okay! Stay in the nest until it's time to fledge, little eagle, the ground is dangerous for a young bird of any size. Big props to Nicole, I'd go two steps up the ladder and get stuck lol

When I first saw the baby laying on the edge of the nest I thought it looked dead. But then when Ladder Man picked it up, I was like OMG that bird is HUGE! 😂 Nice rescue and remodel on nest!
