    Chick #4--"Fe Fi Fo Fum--I smell the blood of a Featherless Monster!" That opened-beak look of astonishment mixed with horror as the chicks have their first view of The Monsters. There certainly was a platoon of uninvited guests at this event. Annie was like, "How many times do I have to tell you creatures not to mess with my chicks! I don't care if you gift them with bling. Now get the #@!*% outta my palace!"
    Many thanks to Zeka, Gavin, and the other guests, and especially UC Berkeley and Cal Falcons/cam ops, for a great banding day (as far as we humans are concerned). And huge thanks to SKHideaways for your excellent comments and compilation of today's events at the Campanile!

    Wow, thank you for this! The babies are huge. I had no idea until the featherless picked them up. They are the size of adult chickens! So amazing and many thanks to the researchers who watch over the bird families. ❤❤❤

    Thank you so much for this great video. I only watched the nest cam and missed all the excitement in the air.
    I just loved that the littlest bird sounded the alarm. Annie was so focused on feeding that it took her a minute to realize the nest had been invaded. I wonder if she remembers this is a "thing" for this nest and it happens every year? Perhaps she does remember--and remembers that her air assaults on the featherless ones eventually drives them off and that her chicks are unharmed. Clearly, though, all the advantages of the nest outweigh the occasional incursions by the featherless ground dwellers.
    It must be terrifying for birds--especially flightless chicks--to come in contact with these large "animals." I imagine their only frame of reference is that these "animals" want to kill and eat them. A great idea to have two people banding to make this go as quickly as possible--and let the fluffballs get back to their idyllic nest days.
    It's always a surprise to see how big the chicks are--and how fast they've become that big from being inside a little egg not long ago! And loved what a great fight these little birds put up despite being so outmatched in size and experience.
    This must have been A LOT of work to put together. It's wonderful--thank you!

    I watched it live but I knew the SKH Compilation would be a good one...and it is!! Thank you for all your work stitching this together, SKH. 🥰
    I'm curious about the man who was doing the audio recording of Gavin (is he the one who was Soledad's nemesis?) and what might come of that; maybe there's a story coming out soon somewhere? Nonetheless, they were quite speedy considering they had four to do, and they even spritzed up the cameras. (But not the pellets on the ledge; I didn't even realize those were there until today!) I've been swooped by red-winged blackbirds many times, and I don't fancy my chances against peregrines, but it still would be cool in a slightly terrifying way to be divebombed by such incredible flyers, and to receive a truly excellent death glare from Annie. 😇 What an honor.😉
    Hooray for Green, Yellow, Blue, and Silver, our perfect blinged-out foursome. 💍💍💍💍

    Annie was not impressed at all and when it was all over, she was still making sure those unfeathered intruders were not still hanging around.
    Two of each, i guessed that correct, although i did think i would be proven wrong
    Well done to all the team for all you do

    This is my first banding and it was amazing to witness the process. It was lovely to have a size comparison of how large they are. I thought they could fit into the palm of my hand but boy was I wrong - they are huge! 😁 Nevertheless they did not look impressed that their breakfast was interrupted!

      Alan, so, your PF banding virginity has at last come to pass! And in a most wonderful way. Congratulations!
      And thanks for giving us a sense, through your eyes, of the chicks' enormity. They're meaty 'little' buggers, aren't they? 😁
      If you're interested, SKH does have videos of two previous bandings that I know of. One is of Annie & Louuuuuuuu's brood from 2023.
      Another, also from 2023, is of Hartley & Monty's (San Jose City Hall) then-one chick Soleded, the rooftop "screamer". That video is a fan classic! Plus, there's rappeling involved. A terrific, uninterrupted, full view of the entire banding process. You must see it. Because of Soledad's highly unusual chick behavior, it's PF gold! Memorable & eminently re-watchable.

    Wow, bold, aggressive landing by Annie, but hopefully some nice pics were captured. Those were really close flybys by Archie and Annie. I,'m glad the banders got out fairly quickly. The 4 floofs are so adorable and Wee #4 is quite observant and a great alarmist. Thank you to all who were there and Cal Falcon & Cam Ops for sharing this. Do we know the birth order genders?

    • @skhideaways
      @skhideaways  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      During the Cal Falcons Q&A they said the only certainty is that the smallest male was the fourth hatch. Because the other three were born on the same day, it’s not possible to tell for certain their hatch order.

    I am so lucky I just found your channel. I am a big fan of all raptors, but I have a soft spot for pergerine falcons.
    I have been watching the PA Falcons in Harrisburg PA, and while there are 4 cams and it is on year round, there is no chat of any sort.
    Thank you so so much for making this possible.
    The nest or should I say ledge is 15 stories up on the Rachel Carson Building, across from the Harrisburg PA Transportation Center.
    We are lucky that there were 5
    This was so wonderful to see the banding, the Harrisburg PA Falcons are going to be banded on May 22, 2024 on Facebook. I hope I'll be able to watch it.

    Black bands for California. I wonder if all types of birds (that are banded) in California are banded black or just falcons?
    Is there a list of states and what the color bands they use?
    That was interesting! Thank you. I didn’t realize just how big those chicks were! ❤

    • @kitkat5765
      @kitkat5765 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@skhideaways I think it's done by regions, maybe? I know in the Midwest here they seem to use two color bands (?) in addition to the federal band, black and then one other color (blue, red, or green). Raptor Resource Project has more in their article "Falcons at Great Spirit Bluff: reading and reporting peregrine falcon band numbers." Specifically: "The color or auxiliary band is striped. In the Midwest, the top color is black and the bottom color is blue, red, or green. The characters on the black/top band are read first, followed by the characters on the color/bottom band. The number is expressed as X/Y, so the band below is read as 49/R." You can look them up in the Midwest Peregrine Program database, and I bet other regions have similar. (I also remember the head of the Chicago Peregrine Project saying something similar in a talk of hers I went to a few months ago!)
