The right leg of one-month-old bald eaglet, Honor (DC4), became precariously lodged inside a hole within the outer rails of its nest. The eaglet was unable to free itself after a considerable period of time.
Honor resides in a wild nest located at the top of a Tulip Poplar tree at the Agricultural Research Service’s U.S. National Arboretum in Washington DC along with its sibling Glory (DC5) and bald eagle parents Mr. President & The First Lady.
Via the live-streaming cameras at naeaglecam.org it became apparent to worldwide viewers that Honor was in trouble and distressed. A human-coordinated rescue was needed to significantly decrease the chance of serious injury to the eaglet's leg. The American Eagle Foundation and the U.S. National Arboretum immediately cooperated with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and www.exceltreeexperts.com to plan the removal of the eaglet from the nest.
After being retrieved and lowered from the tree by professional arborists Matt Morrison & Marty Levine the eaglet was initially assessed on the ground by US Fish & Wildlife Service biologist Craig Koppie. It then received further examination by veterinarian Samantha Sander at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, who truly gave the eaglet the "presidential treatment"! A physical check-up and radiograph revealed no permanent damage to Honor's leg, with the only visible signs being a slight abrasion and swelling on the right leg. Overall, the eaglet received an acceptable health report and was approved by the veterinarian to be placed back into its nest.
The entire process of freeing the eaglet's leg, getting it checked out/radiographed, and then returning it to the nest took less than 24 hours. Honor was successfully returned to its nest at the Arboretum on April 21st at around 5pm EDT. Mr. President, The First Lady, and Glory welcomed Honor back home safe and sound!
We at The American Eagle Foundation are extremely grateful for all USFWS, USNA, Ex-Cel Tree Experts and Maryland Zoo staff and volunteers who readily responded to this emergency situation and helped make this a quick, safe and successful rescue effort.

I am very grateful to everyone who participated in this rescue effort. This was a situation that definitely required human intervention, and that intervention came quickly and was performed in a very caring manner. It was wonderful to see DC4 reunited with its sibling and parents. Thank you to all who played a role in this rescue.

Loved the conversation between the rescuer and the baby. You could hear the parents screeching in the distance letting him know they were watching. Wonderful job!

It's incredible how strong and well built an eagle's nest is.....and how large. One cannot get the full extent of it until you see a man perched in one, lol!!

I remember that. I was watching at the time and was one of probably thousands who messaged them and told them he was stuck. I was so glad to see them rescue him and that he was okay.

Thank you for helping this little one. Had there not been a camera, that little one may have died and if there weren't' caring people such as these to help them, the outcome may have bee devastating; thank you all. I can't believe that nest can hold that man who probably weighs 200lbs. See the little one watching him; was afraid he may have become so frightened, he may have flopped over the nest. Much thanks from New York.

Man, what a video. These people are amazing!! My hat is off to the guy standing upright in the nest while the wind blew the tree around. I don't know how they do it, practice I guess. My hand were sweating the entire time and half of my nails have been bitten off just watching the guy from my laptop. I fly airplanes for a living but cant climb 10 feet up a ladder without fearing that I will somehow fall and break my neck. Great job people!!

This is such a great thing! When society puts a camera on an Eagles nest, those Eagles become way more than just beautiful wild animals we admire. They become part of our lives. We watch them every day, therefore we naturally grow to adore them, to love them. With that type of connection comes responsibility. Responsibility to protect and intervene when saving a life is absolutely necessary (whether man made or natural). This natural case was 100% necessary and I couldn't be more impressed with how well this was executed. All involved, you did amazing helping DC4 and also I think everyone agrees this technician was awesome.

In the summer of 1974 a fotographer (maybe from Nat`l Geogr.?) hired me to fly a Cessna 150 from Woodbridge,Va to Mason Neck wildlife area to film bald eagle nest. I turned in very low and tight circles so we were only about 10-15 meters from the eagle nest all the time. I was busy but suddenly a tornado came with heavy pouring rain and I could not keep altitude in the downdraft even with full power! But landing in the swamp (about 100 ft diameter clearing!) was not tempting so for about 20 minutes the plane flew only 5-10 ft high or less, wingtip touching plants, engine roaring! The tornado left as suddenly as it came, we climbed and flew back to the airport but the camera was on all the time - so the reporter was very happy for our adventure and for the spectacular footage!
