  • Julian Sarafian has it all from the outsider's perspective: the grades, the pedigree, the dream job. But behind the relentless hustling of a high achiever lays a darker path - one of mental health mismanagement, thoughts of self-harm, and the costs behind such great heights. In his Talk, Sarafian discusses the costs of success, and what everyone in the world should think deeper about when it comes to the world of mental health. Julian is a graduate of Berkeley and Harvard Law School who recently left corporate law to advocate for mental health and pursue content creation and entrepreneurship. As someone diagnosed with severe anxiety and mild depression, mental health is an issue close to Julian’s heart - one that he is committed to fighting for in his advocacy work on social media, writing, and upcoming book. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I relate to him a lot. The cost of perfeccionism in my mental health is terrible, but I’m learning to be nicer to myself

2nd year medical student here and this talk resonated with me deeply. I've been lucky enough, thank God, to have realised that this is potential problem for myself and I've been slowly working on it this year with small incremental successes. I have worked on things in my personal life which have helped but I'm starting to think this is a societal problem and our relationship with labour as a whole and the system of capitalism that promotes it is a source of the issue that we need to grapple with - We should ask why do people experience what you and I have experienced in the first place. Many thanks for sharing your experience that will help so many!
This phenomenon is particularly worrying when you consider the human cost to those who don't have the socioeconomic ability to obtain help or to take a brake from work etc .

I am 6 months from graduating in medical school and here is what I have to say to you: At my second year, I found myself miserable and only studying. Medicine is my great passion and I am deeply devoted to it but I have learned that you gotta learn to enjoy the PATHWAY to become a doctor rather than only seeing your goals. Of course your goals are important but focus on enjoying what are you doing to yourself right now to become the best version for your goals. I started therapy, CBD medication for anxiety management, eating well and working out religiously and it changed my life. Don't forget to love yourself and love your growth towards your future. Best of success for you, my friend!

Thank you for reassuring me that I’m on the good, healthy path. Few years ago I had a burn out and a fortunately benign brain tumor. After surgery I started mental health, I dedicated myself to my health and got support from my 3 kids. It wasn’t easy at all, but I made it and I still work on myself and I always will. We are survivors

Thank you so much for this! Coming from a young man with an experience like yours and the willingness to share and be so vulnerable is powerful! The other side of success and mental health among our young people needs to brought into the conversation. You have done that so eloquently and compassionately. Your voice will save lives, Julian.

EXCELLENT PRESENTATION!! Loved it!🥰 I can truly relate to the stress, depression and anxiety of aiming to achieve and trying to please managers who are never satisfied. Life began to feel like a "striving after wind."
(Ecclesiastes 2:17) I reduced my job hours, simplified my life, bolstered my relationship with God. When I made my mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health my priority then I began to heal. "Of what profit is it to a man if he gains the WHOLE WORLD and loses his soul?" Mark 8:36

We can’t experience the alternatives. We could only experience what we have done. Whatever we chose, we would have some regrets.
However, there is a possibility the alternatives are worse than the situation we are right now.
