Athletes, musicians, doctors, and many other professionals know what it means to be in the zone. Neurosurgeon Alex Spiotta calls it “the flow state,” and he’s convinced that whole teams of people can achieve it. He makes his point with a story about how he and his surgical team saved the life of a young pregnant woman who had been left for dead. Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, Alejandro Spiotta has performed thousands of complex high-stakes brain surgeries in record time through deep focus and mindfulness. He’s used similar techniques in Ironman triathlons, and is convinced that a wide range of professionals can learn how to find their own performance-enhancing flow state. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The 'team talk ' was inspirational, nothing short of inspirational. I'd love to hear from Will and Damian and how you made them feel that day
they are extraordinary and critical parts of the team, and always are willing to go above and beyond to help achieve the 'team mission' of that day
The ability to bring his team into a state of 'team flow' is truly remarkable. Science meets life-saving!
Very few speakers have the ability to construct the idea in the minds of the audience and you sir did that. Great talk.Highly recommend.

No quick fixes everyone- my biggest takeaways-hardwork for everything

What an incredible story and message in this TEDx talk! Being an eye surgeon, myself, I can really appreciate the concept of team flow, but until now, had never really conceptualized it in this amazing manner. Kudos to this doctor and wonderful human being!

The Hayley stuff got me in the feels
I'm delighted to have been notified f this. Great speaker, great delivery, great presentation. Bravo
You deserve a medal for your courage
thank you
Really great talk Alex, have you always been so strong mentally ??? You have a very focused and disciplined mindset. Impressive.
I believe your mental resolve is shaped by your experiences during your formidable years, and the adage 'tough times create tough people'. Is is then also strengthened during the 7 year period of Neurosurgery training, which is a pressure cooker and does create 'tough minded' individuals - important for your future work as a neurosurgeon. lastly, I was always involved in team sports, never individual.
Such convivtion in your message - team flow
That image blew me away, the path of the bullet wow
You have given me hope in face of challenges in my own life
Love to hear it! this was the purpose, I am very satisfied to hear this from you
Leading your team and achieving team flow , love this
Congratulations to the organisers, speaker etc
I know the exact feeling he's talking about but I've never heard it explained like this. I've always just thought of it as a higher force flowing through you, like you're not even really thinking.
That's a great way to describe the sensation of being 'in the flow', nothing beats it. Things are happening effortlessly and we don't second guess our abilities or the outcome of the task at hand, we simply do (think of the original Nike campaign, 'Just do it')
Love the confidence on stage Alex, super speaker
I love the idea of rituals and routines to get into a flow state. It's a great takeaway for improving performance in various aspects of life.
A very important one, no doubt!
Imagine having a composed and calm leader like this in your corner, I am sure everyone is very proud of you Alex and your life changing work, super glad I was sent and redirected to this talk so so good, thank you all concerned
Inspirational human being you are Alex
5% chance of surviving and 1 % chance of a meaningful life with her baby, wow.But I wasn't zero-so inspirational, hope!
I love how seen opportunity, save not 1 but 2 lives
Such an expert on the brain, Alex do you work consciously on your mindset and who do you look upto ?
Emotional talk, I could feel myself getting emotional throughout, so good
Sleep is vital to subconscious activity. I bought one of those Oura rings, incredible insights.
This is amazing. I feel like even just the way he framed it at the 1:50 mark would have set that team up to be in such a powerful headspace
Yes, I think how you approach a situation is everything 🙌
glad it resonated!
He's a neurosurgeon but also does Ironman triathlons, and he's convinced that whole teams can get into that flow. There's this incredible story about how his surgical team saved a pregnant woman's life. It's all about deep focus and mindfulness, and he believes it's not just for neurosurgery or sports, but for anyone in any profession. It's seriously fascinating stuff!"
thank you for the great summary, glad you enjoyed it and hope you learned a lot from it.
Huge well done Mr Spiotta
A super engaging and well delivered talk - congrats!
True deep focus and such mindfulness and self awareness
Peak effort required in to achieve high performance
Maintaining flow state sounds like such a challenge
follow the 'recipe' for success I outline at both the individual and team levels and it will happen 'magically'. conversely, if surrounded by the wrong people and you have not 'put in the work' as the would-be leader it will be impossible to achieve
Wow this is one of my top 5 Ted talks, really insightful and mind opening. I have witnessed the flow state before but didn’t recognise that’s what happened! Incredible talk!
Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it. I've found what you describe to be very common: we all have an intuition or subconscious appreciation for flow state but can't truly harness its power until we bring it to the forefront of our awareness/consciousness!
Indeed, I agree with this. I’d love to engage you in a short conversation to learn more on some strategies to constantly bring this state to the forefront of our awareness/consciousness. It would be a privilege to connect with you
We love you too Hayley .. super mom!!!!!!
Flowstate- love this unlocking peak human performance
Motivational speaking at its finest
Powerful and profound account and so captivating
Excellent Alex Spiotta.
Such an emotional story Alex
