Vilfort travelled back and forth between Denmark and Sweden during the tournament not expecting to participate but staying with his wife and 7yo daughter who was undergoing treatment for Leukaemia in hospital. It was his daughter who convinced him to go and play. She wanted to watch him play. I'm sorry but there is not a happy ending to this. His daughter died a few weeks after the final.
The player of the tournament was Brian Laudrup. He did not score any goals but was the catalyst for the success of Denmark. Every time he got on the ball facing forward he looked a threat and was near impossible to contain and laid on some important goals. What was not shown in the above video, thankfully, was the terrible injury to Henrik Andersen in the second half of the semifinal against Holland. His collision with Marco van Basten and that collapsed knee cap, not to look at for the squeamish. Worst on-field injury I have ever seen. He did recover and played club football after that. But he was a real crowd pleaser. Before that final, Danish forward Flemming Povlsen was interviewed by English TV: "They say that you have the best goalkeeper in the world." Quick as a wit Povlsen added: "Really, then why did we not bring him?" Schmeichel was standing near him, he got the joke and smiled. Danish humour!
A reporter who had an interview with Preben Elkjær Larsen brought a picture with Elkjær and Diego Maradona, and asked Elkjær if this was the best player in the world. Elkjær replied yes, that is indeed the best player in the world, but the little argentinian next to him is pretty good too.
@@srenclausen8534 - I recall Flemming Povlsen (I hope I got the spelling right) was interviewed before the Euro 92 Final by an English reporter. June 26, 1992 ... never forget that day. After winning the European football championship, many danes went out on the streets and roads and the biggest party since 4 May 1945 started. Denmark went crazy ... the holiday boys had made the impossible .... and it was not a dream. It was a beautiful night with millions of friends! And I was drunk like the pope in his sacramental wine!

As a Swede, this tournament was testament that our national football side had something in the works, especially after the awful 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 results at Italia ‘90 (against Brazil, the Scots and Costa Rica). The Swedish performance on home soil at Euro ‘92 was in effect the catalyst for the stunning World Cup bronze two years on.
When this tournament was played in 1992, I was with my family in the cellar and counted the grenades that fell in my village in Bosnie, as a kid of 11 years old! Unfortunately I did not see any match of the euro cup 1992.
Memorable tourney, so happy for the Dynamite Danes ! What a side with some great players - remember watching it while voting in my country's presidential election in the London embassy, amazed at what i saw
@Dreamer Darko If you still have that VHS tape, I certainly wouldn't mind to have a go creating a better transfer of the EURO92. I've had some more than decent results from tapes otherwise deemed difficult to transfer.
Something you will never see again at 2:32 and the Swedish mascot waving a Danish flag. In football there is no greater rivalry that the Danes and Swedes. This was only because the 'enemy' was Germany and when push comes to shove, the Scandinavians hang together. Imagine a Scott waving an English flag at a football match, it is on that scale. Les Murray at the beginning of the video passed away July 31st, three weeks ago. Les is the one who coined the phrase *"The World Game"* and was often heard said *"The World Is Round"* because round football is the greatest sport by far on earth. The ball is not oval shaped. And Denmark winning Euro '92 with a team that was loaded with character and not a little talent, a spirit of doing the unconventional, always sticking it to the big boys with big heads. In other words, typically Danish.

Germany won 1990 WC and then they couldnt win the Euro and had 2 horrible WCs in 1994 and 1998. I know this won't happen with the actual team, despite not winning the Euro 2016. I know this team can win the 2018 WC. Go Germany!
I believe they will, this team is even superior to the 2014 champions. The only big loss would be Schweinsteiger, hopefully Rudy or Can will be up to the challenge.

Considering Yugoslavia lost one of their qualifier matches TO Denmark in that tournament. The only loss that Yugoslavia had in that qualifying tournament, your argument is moot from the start. Clearly if they lost to Denmark one of two times, someone WOULD have had a chance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_1992_qualifying_Group_4
Sounds like you don't know what you are talking about. The REASON Yugoslavia couldn't go to EURO92 was because their country was in freaking civil WAR. I saw one of the last qualification matches where we (Denmark) played Yugoslavia at home, and lost. This meant Yugoslavia had qualified and we were not going. As far as I am aware it is the first and only time a team who was qualified didn't go. I feel truly sorry for the victims of the Yugoslavia civil war, but I am grateful we got the chance at euro92 and the team was fortunate enough to deliver a miracle.
The beginning of the 90's caused a great change in how Denmark perceived itself, I think. We are a small nation. We know we don't make that much difference in the world. But winning the Euro cup and for the first time sending military troops to Iraq gave danes a renewed belief in themselves. Now I think we are a little too confident. We think out tiny country matters to climate changes for example. We must go further than everybody else.
billyblackburn87 we weren’t even supposed to be at the EM92, we had failed to qualify to it, but war broke out in Bosnia-Herzegovina so they withdrew and Denmark was the next in the group. I can understand the disappointment. UEFA didn't invent the sanctions but they had to abide to them. Which country gets sanctioned in a conflict seems a bit of a lottery. I had expected Yugoslavia to withdraw anyway, due to the circumstances.
