Kid in my class kept throwing Rowntrees Fruit pastels at his back when he was geeing up the crowd, and he'd turn round trying to see where they'd come from. I remember my dad buying me a huge England flag on a stick from a vendor just as we went into the stadium, and a steward immediately taking it off me, removing the stick and giving me back the balled up flag. Dad wasn't impressed as he'd just paid £5 for a flag on a stick, and the stick was immediately taken. But this was only a few years after Hysel, so even 9 year olds were suspected hooligans!

@jeannotschumacher1024 good footballers just not winners.
Beautiful football.
Bobby Robson, a great team builder.
He won't mind me saying, this was the Brian Moore era.
England qualified impressively for EURO'88, it was then a surprise how they struggled in the
tournament itself losing all 3 games.
They were with the ever-strongest Netherlands, USSR and Ireland in one group.
The struggle started before the tournament start.
Technically, the best team in group was Yugoslavia, who built a superb side for World Cup in 1990. Qualifying for Euros in 1988 was not hard.

Gascoigne should have been in that squad maybe even the team . Newcastle were in a relegation scrap and his sheer brilliance kept them up that year.
Yes but the manager had his favourites really and wouldn’t involve him unfortunately!
Along with the goals from Paul Goddard.
I remember that game against Northern Ireland, it was on my 7th birthday
Hoddle was one of the rare great technical english player
Hard to understand how an excelent english team was so disappointing in the 88 Euro...😐😐
Lineker was ill during Euro 88. Hepatitis, unfortunately. Which explains his lack of goals during the tournament.

6:05 is what I see as English style football at its best…
Pity that they did so bad in Euro 88.
But they came back in World Cup 1990 and were almost equal to West Germany, the winners.
England were uncharacteristically skilful during this period
The first corner against N.I. back when teams would mark the posts! no one does that now
They were well beat at euro 88 england like euro 20/24
I've been waiting for this.
For the English Team which played the real English football - not the ballet- or BLM-style.
The FA consigned this tournament to the bin like it never happened. One of better England teams evolved out of this for 1990 World Cup.
England spielte nach der WM-Qualifikation '86 wieder gegen die Türkei. Diesmal weit weg von einem 8:0!
Why is there only one african player?.
