I was 16 in 1992 and watched it at home in southern Warsaw, Poland. The school holidays just had started, the summer days were hot and sunny and a fantastic team from Denmark won the European championships. Many people here enjoyed the Danish victory, because the Danes play the best football in the tournament, many because of the non-German victory (so, we had very complicated historical relationships with Germany before 1989, and we still couldn't forget the defeat 0:1 in the "match on the water", the last game of the semifinal round in the World Cup 1974). And especially we were proud of Peter Bolesław Schmeichel - the Danish hero with the half-Polish blood in his veins :-)
And look at his son now. Incredible goal-keeper! Good genes in that family 🙂 Hope dad and grand-dad are training junior well, so he will be ready to take over when Kasper goes on retirement! It's Denmarks secret weapon and recipe, to always have a Schmeichel guarding the goal 😎

You guys put up a hell of a fight this game. If we had anyone but Peter in the goal, you would've probably won. We didn't get any space to play around and you had Laudrup boarded up, leaving John Faxe Jensen to take all the shots, who had a terrible record of missing goal attempts (I think he only scored this one time, but he was a midfielder). Vilfort didn't get much space either and had to fight that angle the whole game, only once getting it through the eye of the needle that was Illgner's goal. I remember watching it with my dad (I'm a Dane) and we were fearful all the way to the end. We knew what the German team was capable of. We had just seen them win the World Cup two years prior against the great football nation of Argentina. Klinsmann and Kohler were both a force to be reckoned with. You never knew when Germany would pull two goals out of the hat within 5 minutes back then.
Well, I must admit that the German team created way more chances and had better players overall. But this final shows what a world class goalkeeper, two more top-players, luck, hard work, and a good strategy can do. I understand why you are hurt. Today, the danish national team is more competitive than in 92. And Germany are of course, as allways.
Peter Schmeichel one of the all time greats. No goalkeeper comes close to Schmeichel when it comes to one on one and his ability to start attacks was just legendary.
Among all the football events before and after, THIS gave me the most joy.. I supported Denmark since 1984 so this victory was long coming but here they played for themselves and for Yugoslavia, and won against all the biggest European favourites France, Netherlands and finally Germany. Truly the most enjoyable final match of them all for me.
Players from the Danish league were not on holiday. They played at their clubs and then joined the training camp later, making preparations much more difficult.
I am Belgian and there was an excellent Danish player in the team of which I was a supporter (RFC Seraing who unfortunately disappeared) Jens Bertelsen, who made the heyday of my club which had gone from division 4 to division 1 in 4 years. Bertelsen left only good memories with us. Other players have played in Belgium: Olsen, Brylle, P Larsen, and other internationals.

Doesnt man anything but later he told he was so happy thats what came to his mind to say. His co-commentator for the match is Preben Elkjær. 9.54. Toft to Preben: This is not true Preben, this is not happening...but damn it is. Denmark leads 2-0. This victory was followed by the largest masses of people in the streets since Denmark was liberated in 1945.
Denmark met every single FAV team to win the Euro championship on the way to the finals. Remember watching the German Euro TV-studio with a former WC footballer fuming afterwards that it was totally undeserved ,Denmark had played trashy and were just lucky - after which the moderator quitly reminded him that "Denmark actually won with two goals..." LOL! Lived in Bazil at the time and had only a few Danish friends with me, but a half hour after the match suddenly 100 Germans popped up at our gate wanting to party! They had prepared a big celebration and after they lost they thought: "Hell, we have everything lined up already, beer, champagne, snacks - so let's walk over and crash the Danish party and have some fun together. And so we had!

we are the same age 75-74 I was in high school then in Tunisia aka Carthage,,,,we supported the Danes and especially against the German cheaters who cheated against my coubtry in 78 and against algeria in 82
Actually they kinda weren't. West-Germany were the world champions. This, however, was the first time since before ww2 that a unified Germany participated in an international tournament, so you could imagine how hard this defeat was for them, especially since they were 100% convinced they would beat Denmark. They had even arranged for their celebration in advance before the final. Oh so marvelous sweet memories...
Yes...to this day I still wonder how in the world, we pulled it off. 1992 was the year when I finished high school and the year Denmark voted "no" to the Maastricht Treaty. What a summer.

They would probably not have have won the euros, if it wasn't because goalies were allowed to pick up the ball from a teammates pass. The rule was applied shortly after EURO92, but hats off for Denmark for playing smart! (and of course Schmeichel was an absolute beast)
I was 10 years old. By that time we had an electricity breakdown and we had to watch it on a small black-white TV attached to a car battery.... Days that could never be forgotten!
Sweden beat Denmark in the group and the Netherlands also beat Germany in their group, but the Danes and the Germans went all the way from the semi(only 8 teams in the playoffs so 2 from the groups went straight to semi)! Weird tournament, but congrats to my Danish neighbors !

I'm Brazilian and I live in the interior of São Paulo, I don't like the Brazilian national team at all, but I love the German Football Team with passion, I remember I was going to watch this game, but the television at home went bad on the day of that match, I couldn't time to fix or buy a new TV, I listened to the entire game on the radio, on the radio it was very emotional, but then I watched a rerun of that match on TV and I thought it was a good thing that the home TV burned, because the game was not so so good to watch
If Denmark was to repeat this, it doesn't get much better than this year. With a relatively easy path to the quarter final by the looks of it, home advantage and a team that plays the best football I've seen in 20 years (give or take) from a Danish side. Small nations like Denmark don't get a lot of opportunities like this, so I hope they make the best of it.
This would have been the ultimate grand finale to the Dutch-German 74, 78, 88, 90 and 92 saga. One last final which was at the time the greatest rivalry in football. 2 victories for Germany, 2 Victories for NL and one draw in 78. This would have settled the score.
Klinsman was not even a menacing shadow in this match. His antics and faking failed to works against the no nonsense Danes. Other German players i.e., Riedel and cos played really well and could have turned the match if not for excellent goalkeeping from Schmeichel. German played well very well as a team but the Danes managed to capitalize on rare opportunities they got and scored.
As a Dane and trying to be objective the Germans played the better football overall but they weren´t playing at top level and neither were the Danes who had a much better game against Holland. Schmeichel was fantastic and the Germans were wasteful, it happens often in football... in the end scoring more than your opponents is all that counts, ask Mourinho :-D.
Denmark came to championship instead of Yugoslavia. Unfortunately due to sanctions by UN, Yugoslavia was banded from this tournament. Yugoslavia was one of the best team with the best players at that time.

I'm Brazilian and I live in the interior of São Paulo, I don't like the Brazilian national team at all, but I love the German Football Team with passion, I remember I was going to watch this game, but the television at home went bad on the day of that match, I couldn't time to fix or buy a new TV, I listened to the entire game on the radio, on the radio it was very emotional, but then I watched a rerun of that match on TV and I thought it was a good thing that the home TV burned, because the game was not so so good to watch

If Denmark was to repeat this, it doesn't get much better than this year. With a relatively easy path to the quarter final by the looks of it, home advantage and a team that plays the best football I've seen in 20 years (give or take) from a Danish side. Small nations like Denmark don't get a lot of opportunities like this, so I hope they make the best of it.

This would have been the ultimate grand finale to the Dutch-German 74, 78, 88, 90 and 92 saga. One last final which was at the time the greatest rivalry in football. 2 victories for Germany, 2 Victories for NL and one draw in 78. This would have settled the score.

Peter schmeichel looks like ivan drago.
Klinsman was not even a menacing shadow in this match. His antics and faking failed to works against the no nonsense Danes. Other German players i.e., Riedel and cos played really well and could have turned the match if not for excellent goalkeeping from Schmeichel. German played well very well as a team but the Danes managed to capitalize on rare opportunities they got and scored.
As a Dane and trying to be objective the Germans played the better football overall but they weren´t playing at top level and neither were the Danes who had a much better game against Holland. Schmeichel was fantastic and the Germans were wasteful, it happens often in football... in the end scoring more than your opponents is all that counts, ask Mourinho :-D.

Denmark came to championship instead of Yugoslavia. Unfortunately due to sanctions by UN, Yugoslavia was banded from this tournament. Yugoslavia was one of the best team with the best players at that time.

Fuck me, I was 20 and had the night of my life ruining my moms red lipstick painting Dannebrog on my face before the match, getting free beers in Holstebro for each goal and climbing the fountain in the main square and shouting "Der er et yndigt land". So many good memories since, but those still stand out!

Beat France and Czech Republic in the knockout stage and beat Portugal again in Lisbon. Greece was a 150-1 underdog to win the Euros. I watched all off their Euro games. They were practically playing Catenacio every game, clog the middle, 3 at the back, side midfielders up and down the flanks and counter attacking.
Though he yelled at me as a kid and was a rather unpleasant meeting, Peter Schmeichel was phenomenal in this match. A real star goal keeper.

Помните почти волшебную, сказочную победу сборной Дании на Евро 92. У этой сказки есть и другая сторона, но она не веселая, более того страшная, но божественная.
В 1992 году по политическим причинам сборная Югославии была отстранена от участия в турнире проходившем в Швеции.
Это событие типичный "Черный лебедь", привело к тому, что не попавшая на турнир и проводящая в отпуске на курортах сборная Дании, была приглашена заменить югославов.
По началу никто в Дании не поверил в эту новость, все думали розыгрыш. Потом не верил в это тренер датчан Рихард Меллер-Нильсон, позже когда уже стало ясно, что это не розыгрыш, стали собирать датских футболистов со всех курортов мира, дело это было очень сложное, хотя бы потому-что и футболисты думали, что это розыгрыш и вешали трубки.
С большим трудом тренеру удалось уговорить футболистов прибыть в расположении сборной. К примеру Михаэль Лаудруп не приехал, он, конфликтовал с тренером, и не хотел прерывать свой отдых, тем более все в мире понимали, что Дания едет на турнир в качестве статистов.
Это понимал и Меллер-Нильсон, поэтому он попросил футболистов не прерывать отдых, так как после трех игр каждый смог бы продолжить его. У команды не было ни плана тренировок, ни анализа соперников, вообще ничего не было. Идея была в том, что выйдем на поле, коснемся мяча, а там видно будет, что делать дальше.
Так же от чемпионата первоначально отказался Ким Вильфорт, причина ужасна, его маленькая дочь умирала в больнице для больных раком. Тренер и команда понимали в каком ужасающем положении находится отец Вильфорт. Ему было предложены любые условия, какие он сам выберет. Он отказался.
Но, больной девочке стало лучше, и она и вместе с женой Кима, попросила его поехать на чемпионат. Тренер Нильсон, разрешил Вильфорту после матча сразу возвращаться в Данию, благо все было очень близко.
Первый матч Дания играет вничью с англичанами, во втором проигрывает Швеции, ребенку становится плохо, и в перерыве жена просит Вильфорта срочно вернутся в Копенгаген. Вильфорт собирает чемодан, уезжает и просит товарищей его не ждать, он принял решение покинуть турнир. Все всё понимают, Ким уезжает.
Матч с Францией он смотрит уже в больнице вместе с дочерью. Дания открывает счет, Франция сравнивает, все шло к вылету, но в самом конце Эльструп забивает Франции победный гол.
Вильфорт видит, как вся больница, оглашается счастливыми криками, больные, несчастные люди, которым осталось жить почти ничего, люди стонающие и плачущие от страшных болей, лысые, худые, изнеможенные, и потерявшие блеск в глазах, вдруг оживают, и он видит вокруг счастливых людей. Он видит как во всех палатах ликуют, он видит свою счастливую дочь. Они забыли про свою смертельную болезнь, они счастливы, хотя бы на время матча, они забыли о своих мучениях. Вильфорт запирается в туалете и рыдает. Сердце Вильфорта разрывалось от радости и боли.
В полуфинале Данию ждет почти непобедимая Голландия, это главный претендент на победу. В составе Ван Бастен, Райкард, Куман, Гуллит, Бергкамп, Блинд, Франк де Бур, Ван Брекелен, они жаждут победы, им нет равных. Вильфорт после прозрения в больнице, и просьбы больных, просьбы дочери возвращается в сборную.
Он знает, он помнит, для кого Дания играет, для кого он должен забить, он помнит, что именно сделает смертельно больных людей хоть чуть-чуть счастливее. После основного времени 2-2.
Бьют пенальти, Бастен пробивает ужасно. К точке подходит уставший, исхудавший, весь на стрессах, в тяжелом психическом положении Ким Вильфорт.
Он смотрит в небо, смотрит в сторону Копенгагена, бьет и забивает. На глазах его слезы, ведь он знает, что дочь и все больные сейчас там в пропитанных смертью палатах, счастливы, и забыли все свои несчастья перед телевизором.
Дания в финале похожем на сказку написаную другим датчанином Г.Х. Андерсеном.
После матча он сразу уезжает в Данию, дочери стало совсем плохо. Семилетняя Лин умирала. Вильфорт отказывается играть в финале, но его родные и все больные клиники буквально выгоняют его из палаты и требуют вернутся и выиграть для них кубок Европы. Этого просит и дочь, когда находит в себе силы говорить.
Вы все помните финал с Германией, датчане рано открывают счет, потом их прессуют немцы, они уже были близки, что бы сравнять счет, но за 11 минут до конца матча Ким Вильфорт забивает свой самый важный мяч в жизни, и делает мечту всей нации реальностью.
Но он думал, только о тех, кто сейчас там, умирая от боли и безисходности в раковых палатах, празднуют успех. Он понимал, что футбол и победа вырывали людей из их мучительного ада. Он, нет, все они, вся команда, сделали это для них, для всех них, и для умирающей Лин.
Гол Кима в финале немцам считается одним из самых эмоциональных и трагических голов в истории футбола.
Летняя сказка сборной Дании войдет в "золотой фонд" истории футбола.
Лин Вильфорт умерла через несколько дней после финала. В последние часы жизни, она сказал, что гордится отцом. Ее мечта сбылась Дания выиграла, а папа был сильным. Он мечтала перед смертью увидеть летнюю сказку сборной Дании, и она ее увидела. Это была сказка написанная для нее, и для таких же как она. Они были счастливы тем летом.
Год спустя после чемпионата Европы у Кима и Мины Вильфорт родилась дочь Рикке.
