@@elnikaco im croat and our players have huge role in yugoslavin qualifying on that euro. You dont have apologize for nothing im glad that you won that EURO . If it wasnt for schmeichel and his saves against greece in 97' we wouldnt go on wc 98' and won bronze medal.
I remember having several friends from former Yugoslavia that were devastated at their team not being able to compete in the Euros. That team was incredible and surely would’ve gone far in the competition. Yet another example of how the US and NATO ruin everything.
This is the only game, I have watched full time. I was visiting a friend, that saw it and I haven't regretted being "forced" to see this magnificent game. Now 30 years later, I still haven't seen a match from start to finish. But from time to time I watch this, though not complete, just the highlights of the game.
Great video! I'm from Denmark, born in 1995 so unfortunately I didn't get to experience any of it when it happened. But My dad showed me the whole final match of the tournament, and oh boy did Peter Schmeichel save Denmark from losing that match! I only have 1 complain: In the final, Germany were having a corner, and Schmeichel catched a very high ball with 1 hand! 1 hand. I have never seen anyone do that before or after. That save should have made it in this video!
In qualifying for the 1994 World Cup they only conceded 2 goals and kept 10 clean sheets out of 12 games in a group that contained Spain and the Republic of Ireland and finished on the same points and goal difference as the latter but the Irish scored more goals and went to the USA.
Danish Dynamite (80's) and the 92' team are, I guess, widely considered as the Golden generation of Danish football but it seems we have a new generation of "Golden players" 2021. I was 33 back in 1992 and I remember the final like it was played yesterday, and the best part of it all was that it was the Germans we took down. (They have never forgotten it!)
The world cup match that you said was between Northern Ireland and Egypt was in fact between the Republic of Ireland and Egypt and the rule change had nothing to do with the Irish goalkeeper, Bonner. It was common practice until the rule change to pass back to the goalkeeper in order to create space further up the pitch and the rule change was supposed to make defenders pass the ball forward and to speed up the game.
I remember just how euphoric Denmark was.. it was insane, looking back at it, it was one of the few times I really felt like "this is my country and everyone in it is fucking awesome" Never been a huge football fan, but in the summer of 92' every dane was
Thank's for telling our story. I watched the semis on vacation in Cyprus along with some very drunk Dutch tourist, After we won there was free drinks on nearly every bar if you were from Denmark. Watched the final at my grandparents who lived close to central Copenhagen, After the final the trains that we're heading for Copenhagen we're jam packed (Had to wait 90 minutes for one with enough room) :) . Had a great party with a bunch of complete strangers.
Been following Germany as Fan since 1988...the loss against Denmark never felt to me like a tragedy. We still made it to the final...and there is - in my opinion - no shame loosing these crazy, unpredictable big tournaments finals....we ended up getting the trophy in freaking ENGLAND a couple years later...
GREAT documentary on danish football history… also shows that the danes were the first team in the world to have a “multicultural” team in the world… The 1986 team was a true force to behold.. All the players came from the top teams of the top 5 leagues in Europe…. 🇩🇰💪🏼
Thank you for this great trip down the memory lane :) I was 18 back in 1992. This year, my only child is 18. I was into Flemming Povlsen, my daughter's into Yussuf Poulsen - we agreed from the beginning that this would be a great year to get another win - I mean, why else would they postpone it so she got to be 18? 😆🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Thank you for this video, what a great story! I can remember watching the final game on the couch of my grandparents as an 8-year old boy. However, there is one little thing if have to point out @21:15 - the competitors in that 1990 group stage were in fact Egypt and the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland.
Tennis is enjoyable even if it is a single game because it takes stamina to play for how many hours. But yes, I agree with your point that team sports are more exciting than individual sports.
There where multiple stories when Laudrup was coach in Spain, some of the players got asked “who is the best player on the training ground”, they always replied Laudrup. Him and Peter Schmeichel are probably the only Danish players that will ever reach deity level.
@@Gnamzy Schmeichel is arguable the best goalkeeper ever. Laudrup was one of the best ever, in his position. They’re in the same league as Maradona, Pele, Alan Shearer, Ronaldo, Zidane, Platini, Paul Breutner, Maldini and Messi and C. Ronaldo today. That’s not saying Preben and Allen wasn’t good. They were top class. I’m speaking deity level, where as these players were out of this world, like they weren’t mere mortals playing football but gods. Hence “deity”. Not undermining the others by any stretch.
He was set to get the Hall of Fame in Danish football in 2012, but a rule said he had to be there and he was in Finland to receive the Captains Ball on the same day. His Tommy son accepted the Hall of fame on behalf of his father who passed a week after it was announced he would be in the Hall of Fame 2014. Sadly Tommy passed in 2023 (61yo). I have meet Richard a few times, when he visited his old club (Trainer) Svendborg FC, he would always have time to greet people and he remembered you. He really loved the game and enjoyed coming to the matches, he is a proud Funen Beech (Fynsk bøgetræ), remembered with the RMN square in Odense and a tribune named after him, honorary member of Svendborg F.C. A legend around these parts.
Denmark did not allowed professionals to play for the national team before 1972 and did really first get fully fletched professionals in 1979 when the german Sepp Piontek became manager and proffessional football was introduced in the danish leauge. First appearence in a major championship finals was EURO 1984 in France. Qualified for 8 EUROS and 6 World Cups since 1979, 8 times advanced to the knockout phase and winner of EURO 1992, which then was followed up by winning FIFA Confederations Cup in 1995. Most prominent players : Michael Laudrup, Peter Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup, Allan Simonsen, Preben Elkjær Larsen, Morten Olsen, Henning Jensen and Christian Eriksen. All time topscorer : Jon Dahl Tomasson, 52 goals in 112 games. Btw - This is quite simple the best video about this triumph.
Also, because they were the 1992 UEFA Euros champions, they would get to play the 1994 Confederations Cup (called the King Fahd Cup back then) winning it for the first and only time so far against the reigning Confederation Cup champions Argentina.
Great video - you are right the half Brøndby Team and Schmeichels ever best match was the key to the championship. By the way Denmark in fact played better than Yugoslavia in the defeat in the groupstage. The last matches Denmark played a lot of passes to the goalkeeper who could pick the ball with the hands - so thats why the present rule not to pick up the ball from your own team-mates was introduced!
It was a surreal Summer in Denmark. Especially the knock out rounds.. But, I remember we all had been talking about a breakthrough for the Danish national team prior to the tournament, so I guess we knew we could do it.
Excellent video. I knew very little of the details surrounding this team. Not the most exciting squad ever but they earned it. They took advantage of an incredible opportunity. Too bad Michael Laudrup didn't rejoin the team--assuming that somehow that his inclusion would not have altered the team's result adversely.
Michael Laudrup has told in a documentary, that he declined the offer to play in the tournament as respect of the players, who actually played in the qualification - He didn't earned the spot.
@@bananaempijama Richard actually kept in touch with Michael Laudrup and visited him many times in Barcelona, there was no bad blood between them. Remember Michael returned to the danish national team under Richard after, he more or less was frozen out by Barcelona. He has told, he didn't had the mindset to be frontfigure on two teams with very different styles of football, and he had to step up in Barcelona at that time in his carrier, so he had to choose his employer over the national team - There was no choice.
Michael had no confident in coach Ricardo who before the last qualification match vs Jugoslavia asked Jan Mølby, Brian Laudrup and Michael Laudrup how they should do the tactics maybe without Mølby on the pitch.
There are some really sick narratives going on inside and around the squad, literally one of the players daughter lost her battle to cancer, big player breakthroughs, the best Danish player ever dips on because he doesn’t believe in the coach, and much more.
Henrik Andersen with that ridiculous injury the semi finals as well. Seeing him looking down at his completely ruined knee just screaming is something I'll never forget. Even Ruud Gullit was almost panicking to get medical crew on the pitch as fast as possible.
That Yugoslavia squad was insane, and only getting better. The hypothetical 1994 Yugoslavia World Cup squad is the strongest in football history. A shame we never saw that.
Ah,yes. 1992. The biggest fairytale of football along with ours. Congratulations Denmark! Best wishes from Greece. Now go and win the damn thing! 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
It was a killer team put together by Richard Møller Nielsen. Filled with absolute murderers who would die on the pitch, and with strokes of genius especially from Laudrup and Schmeichel, but also other players.
As a half/half I was happy (and sad) either way. In 2014 I was German :). In Euro 2021 Germany just lost to England, and Denmark beat Wales 4-0 to go through to the QF. Looks like I'm Danish again today.
I watched all their matches - the last one with a guy from Germany, who had been cheering on Denmark through the match against the Netherlands, since he didn’t want his national team to meet the Netherlands in the final… 😏 He left the room after the final without a word and never mentioned it again 😂
Richard Møller Nielsen will always be remembered as a sturdy visionary. He is what any team needs. The eagle eye he had for the play and the organization and hope he instilled in them was legendary. I see Antonio Contes to be of the same caliber but Contes is different in the sense that he sees them as chess players having a cause to play for, while Nielsen played for a cause thus clearing out the weakness in the defense structure.
It is like today, denmark was going into the semifinal and it was first time i since they won in 1992. But like in 1992 it was without their best player Eriksen
I have to correct you on something. Richard Møller Nielsen was from the same Island as me. (Fyn) and the biggest reason that dbu wouldt hire him at first. Is because he spoke funny. He spoke with a heavy accent and he came with some ridiculius statement. F.eks about he's mothers korset.. so because he was a kinda "wierd" man. They wouldt hire him at first :)
I strongly disagree. Considering the "cards" he had available, he managed what no-one thought was possible. Look at the sides they were facing in the euros! I just was the 92 euros again as a 30 years celebration, and I still get the chills when I see the France, Netherlands, and German line up. Some part of me still refuse to believe, that we won those games and I found myself whispering " we are done for. Richard coached the team to two titles and a badass display at the world cup.
@@nikolajhansen9029 I believe I stated that he was the 'perfect man for the job' so I don't get the long-winded defence. He did what I think no other coach could have done in a similar position.
I am happy, mainly for the memories of the team that I gave my support to for EURO 92. Denmark in 92 had copied the Ireland team (then the 6th ranked team in the world), in some respects. The Jack Charlton team had implemented a high pressing game, later adapted by Klopp and Guardiola. In those days nobody had tiki taka, so the ball would be moved wide and a hell of a lot of running by the full backs would overload in midfield and eventually lead to a shooting opportunity. Some teams knew how to deal with that so balls into channels for forwards and a high press midfield often led to fouls and corners and the Ireland team killed people are corners. This Danish team gave roles to Laudrup like John Aldridge. The midfield featured Paul McGrath who was a great player, and he could be the sweeper when needed.
Imagine how bad yugoslav players felt, winning fair and square, traveling to Sweden then getting kicked out because of politics. And to put salt in the wound, the team you defeated in qualifications winning the tournament, damn! Thats a horror story
That year Richard Møller Nielsen didn't even win best danish manager by the Danish football federation but he did however win best manager in the world. Shows how much bias there was in Denmark against out best ever manager
I remember when I watched this Euros when I was a kid, maybe 8-9 years old. I knew a lot of the rules in the game so I was sad when the Powerhouse, Denmark, had been out of the Euros but when the final happened I was so confused and my father was confused to (R.I.P Father 1959-2013) The final ended and Me and my Father was happy that the POWERHOUSE, Denmark, won the whole Euros. It felt like 5 years ago!
I still love the team of 84 and 86 more than the 92 team.... some of the players from the 92 team was already around in 86 (Sivebæk played , Henrik Andersen played, Kent Nielsen was reserve). So only Brian Laudrup and Peter Schmeichel would have had a shot at the start 11 at the 84 and 86 and likely only Peter Schmeichel starting at those teams. I am a bit of a football romantic... it does matter how you win :-)

I remember having several friends from former Yugoslavia that were devastated at their team not being able to compete in the Euros. That team was incredible and surely would’ve gone far in the competition. Yet another example of how the US and NATO ruin everything.
@@alancantu2557 in what universe was the breakup of yugoslavia us and nato’s fault. i mean damn gimme some of the drugs you’re taking
@@alancantu2557 Well. The team that qualified, Yugoslavia didn't EXIST in 1992! All the Croats were left out of the team they announced for the Euro!
Even Schmeichel says that Denmark had never seen anything befere like Michael Laudrup. The best Scandinavian player ever, including Zlatan.
In qualifying for the 1994 World Cup they only conceded 2 goals and kept 10 clean sheets out of 12 games in a group that contained Spain and the Republic of Ireland and finished on the same points and goal difference as the latter but the Irish scored more goals and went to the USA.
A great point that I did not mention. Sadly another reason that many disregard Richard Moller Nielsen's achievements.
We made up for it in 1996...I actually was happy we made it to the finals. Because I'm the finals it's not only talent and tactics...
The world cup match that you said was between Northern Ireland and Egypt was in fact between the Republic of Ireland and Egypt and the rule change had nothing to do with the Irish goalkeeper, Bonner. It was common practice until the rule change to pass back to the goalkeeper in order to create space further up the pitch and the rule change was supposed to make defenders pass the ball forward and to speed up the game.
we love your football videos football iconic
And I love you❤️
I remember just how euphoric Denmark was.. it was insane, looking back at it, it was one of the few times I really felt like "this is my country and everyone in it is fucking awesome" Never been a huge football fan, but in the summer of 92' every dane was
Great video. Denmark vs Netherlands is the best soccer match Ive ever witnessed, to this day :)
Thanks for educating us, that was a very well told story!

GREAT documentary on danish football history… also shows that the danes were the first team in the world to have a “multicultural” team in the world…
The 1986 team was a true force to behold..
All the players came from the top teams of the top 5 leagues in Europe…. 🇩🇰💪🏼
Thank you for this great trip down the memory lane :)
I was 18 back in 1992. This year, my only child is 18. I was into Flemming Povlsen, my daughter's into Yussuf Poulsen - we agreed from the beginning that this would be a great year to get another win - I mean, why else would they postpone it so she got to be 18? 😆🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
That’s cool well even though they did not win they got pretty far making it to the semi finals

Must say the team or competition videos are more enjoyable than single player ones

A legend around these parts.

thank you sooo much for making this video
Denmark did not allowed professionals to play for the national team before 1972 and did
really first get fully fletched professionals in 1979 when the german Sepp Piontek became
manager and proffessional football was introduced in the danish leauge. First appearence
in a major championship finals was EURO 1984 in France. Qualified for 8 EUROS and 6
World Cups since 1979, 8 times advanced to the knockout phase and winner of EURO 1992,
which then was followed up by winning FIFA Confederations Cup in 1995.
Most prominent players : Michael Laudrup, Peter Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup, Allan
Simonsen, Preben Elkjær Larsen, Morten Olsen, Henning Jensen and Christian Eriksen.
All time topscorer : Jon Dahl Tomasson, 52 goals in 112 games.
Btw - This is quite simple the best video about this triumph.
The way you said Papin’s name was incredibly soothing... ( 16:36 )
Hahahaha, thanks!
Also, because they were the 1992 UEFA Euros champions, they would get to play the 1994 Confederations Cup (called the King Fahd Cup back then) winning it for the first and only time so far against the reigning Confederation Cup champions Argentina.
Denmark was also in the Finalissimo final in 1993 But lost against Argentina on penalties
Brian Laudrup isn't just a little brother he's a legend WATP
I was 1 years old when this happened. My dad is still bringing this up, lol.
where are you from?
11:13 - dude; this article just makes it THAT MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE what they accomplished!!!!!
So glad for the Video :) it is my favourit national football story of all times :)
It makes me want to puke. They did not deserve to even be there.
Great video - you are right the half Brøndby Team and Schmeichels ever best match was the key to the championship. By the way Denmark in fact played better than Yugoslavia in the defeat in the groupstage. The last matches Denmark played a lot of passes to the goalkeeper who could pick the ball with the hands - so thats why the present rule not to pick up the ball from your own team-mates was introduced!
imagine not qualifying for the euros with a 6-1-1 record! :o
I was 20 way back then and tipped them to win, I didn't place a wager.
It was a great competition, some really fantastic games
It was a surreal Summer in Denmark. Especially the knock out rounds..
But, I remember we all had been talking about a breakthrough for the Danish national team prior to the tournament, so I guess we knew we could do it.
And they're going to go all the way again!

I don't think he would have maybe fit in the group atmosphere
The main reason why Denmark won the Euros in 92 is because 8 out of 11 players in the starting XI either played or had played together at Brøndby IF.
Loved every second of it, makes me cry off joy
Michael Laudrup has told in a documentary, that he declined the offer to play in the tournament as respect of the players, who actually played in the qualification - He didn't earned the spot.
Nah i know he was pissed as he didn't play
@@jackskellington684 If you ever have listening or seen Michael Laudrup. You know, that is not, who he is.
I read he had troubles with Richard and he gave that excuse.

Happy Birthday Michael Laudrup! One of the Goats
As a half/half I was happy (and sad) either way. In 2014 I was German :). In Euro 2021 Germany just lost to England, and Denmark beat Wales 4-0 to go through to the QF. Looks like I'm Danish again today.
Interesting. Just read a book about Michael Laudrup, which also talks a bit about Euro 92. Fascinating story!
i loved that it happened. it proves that anybody can win a big tournament.
You should do a story about another scandinavian team like when Sweden came third. Place at the 94 FIFA world cup
It is like today, denmark was going into the semifinal and it was first time i since they won in 1992. But like in 1992 it was without their best player Eriksen
Recuerdo muy bien ésa final, fue invitado Dinamarca de último momento, la final VS. Alemania y ganó. Aún no lo quiero creer.
Gracias. Saludos.
Richard Møller Nielsen was not the worlds greatest coach.
But he was the perfect man for the job at Euro 92.
That can't be overstated.
Your video are legit, not the biggest fan of football
But i have a suggestion, what about a video about Foggia of Zeman?
Hmm. Will look into it! Thanks!
It was the first time Michael Laudrup wasn't play for Denmark and see what happend....
Nice work :-)
Imagine how bad yugoslav players felt, winning fair and square, traveling to Sweden then getting kicked out because of politics. And to put salt in the wound, the team you defeated in qualifications winning the tournament, damn! Thats a horror story
Yes and no, their team where already at a extremely painful crossroad where members of their families where literaly shooting at each other

Schmeichel was been in the national team for 5 years by this point. And it's a fairy tale
Schmeichel was left out of the 1986 World Cup,...............
And they're gonna win 🏆 again this year
The should have allowed Yugoslavia one last chance as a "whole" country to participate.
