Just watched this after watching Summer of 92 on Netflix. Almost moved to tears with Kim Vilforts story. Like Lineker in 1992, his child was suffering from leukaemia. Unlike Lineker, his child died. Heartbreaking stuff, for Line to die so soon after the tournament finished. It’s a lovely dramatisation

Both Yashin and Dasajev were better for sure. Dasajev was destroyed by the loss in 1988 against our Dutch team. 25 years after 1988 there was this documentary and Dasajev sadly has turned into this very slow speaking alcoholic wreck. You can guess why....He ws askked if he ever watched the final. He said he did, but only if he was in a certain mood. "What mood might that be". Answer "When I feel extremely depressed...". But Dasajev was the best goalie I ever saw.

Here the Dutch analyses. The Dutch had better players, but as a team they fell apart well before this championship. In the 4 years after 1988 some very crucial things, also very recent ones changed the dynamic in the team. Michels had this feud with Cruyff over the teamtactics. Cruyff thought Michels was too defensive. Michels started to play very offensive and crucially left out some solid defenders for some who he thought were more attackers (Van Aerle exchanged forDe Boer). Also many players never liked Michels, who had a tendency not to communicate with those who were not in the first 11. Wim Kieft did not like him, Van Aerle never spoke a word with Michels even when he was picked as a player. But it went further. To get back at Cruyff, trainer of Barcelona he selected Koeman for Oranje on the very day Barcelona were playing a crucial game fot the champioship. Suffice to say Koeman was seriously pissed off. Then we had the three of Milan (Rijkaard, Van BAsten en Gullit) who were always together at one table and being most with eachother than the others. The goalie wanted to see Denmark vs Sweden but Gullit liked autoracing better and said "tough luck, Hans..haha". Hans van Breukelen was the one who saw this one coming. He warned other players there were becoming very arrogant not even looking at Denmark. Already before the match against Germany after a practice session were most players were not putitng in a lot of effort he decided it was enough he would quit after this tournament.
The above and the very arrogant stance towards Danmark that continued throughout the match (Gullit never helped the defence if he was again outplayed by Andersen who then went on to set up another Danish attack), Van Basten and Rijkaard were mostly busy committing foul after foul and got away with them. The horrible injury on Andersen was the result of a deliberate, very nasty foul by Van Basten. Nothing new to him: his ankle injury that got the better of him in 1993 was a result of a similar very nasty foul in the Dutch competition in 1987 that backfired....Gullit noted that Van Basten was one of the most evil players he ever saw.
Denmark played a very good game, simply penalising our Dutch team for the many mistakes. Underestimating Denmark was the biggest mistake of all.

They were a far better team than most realise, and they had actually gone to Yugoslavia and beat them there, indeed the Yugos were picked by many as a good chance to get the Euro92 crown. Denmark had a good enough team to beat anybody on the day and you always need a bit of luck to win a major tournament, even the best teams need that.

The Danish trick, they know that they are best as underdog. Took the big advantage they had in how they got into the endgame tournament.
And that they were next the generation of the Danish 1980's team, which was stunningly filled with stars.
Brian and Peter those foxes, the National team (Richard Moeller Nielsen) actually manage to let the opponents to ignore the danish stars.
Oh boy they went into a surprise, not to see through that. They should had known what they faces. Who on earth today looking backwards would say
Denmark did not had stars. That generation started with beating Brazil 4-0 in 1989, although that was with Michael L and Morten Olsen.
Especially the Dutch team, Henrik Andersen, Flemming Poulsen, Brian. Lots of the players had played in Holland and Belgium.
Germany should also had known better.
But they all felt them self superior to the danish team and feel asleep.
If Flemming and Brian gets the room for it, they WILL do magic. That is just what they do, normally.
That is why they could not beat Denmark.
Well played Denmark, in more than one sense.

While this is true, consider the fact that Denmark won three games in a row: First against France (The favorites, they had not lost a match in something like 17 games), then they beat The Netherlands (The European Champions from 1988), and then in the final they beat Germany (The World Champions from 1990).. So, saying they had it easier is probably a bit of a stretch.

Michael Laudrup played on the national team from 1982-1990 and again from 1993-1998. He had definately more impact on danish football than his brother or Schmeichel for that matter. All 3 great players tho. But to be honest we where spoliled brats footballwise in the 80's and 90's. We had so many top players in big clubs everywhere. More in the 80's than the 90's tho. Our players now are not very exciting at all. Eriksen is a great player but his persona is non existant.

@@SATULAL Sorry in advance for the long anwer. I agree. They were good players. The 80's national team probably was the best on paper player for player. But they didnt gel aswell as a team like later national teams with fewer european stars. The 80's team was player wise really comparable to the current belgian team. Great players everywhere but they seem to fall short when it really matters. The biggest flop to me was the european championship in '88. We had laudrup at juventus. Jesper Olsen at man utd. Young Schmeichel at Brøndby and 3 others from the same club who a few seasons later would qualify to the uefa cup semifinale and be knocked out by Roma by a goal in the 88th minute in Rome. 3 players who won what is now Champions league with PSV that year. Granted with Spain, Italy and germany it was probably the hardest group ever made lol, but we lost every single game and played badly.
To me the best national team if you combine how good the players were and how well they gelled as a team was the world cup team in '98. Especially the Nigeria and Brazil games were amazing.
We have always had good players. We have them now. They just arent as exciting. And the way we have played recently although we have won many games certainly isnt. A national team will die when the fans fall asleep when they play. Especially in Denmark. Hareide is a great coach and i wish him the best and thank him for his service, but i certainly hope the new coach will bring some excitement.

@@martinslvsten428 Indeed the 80s team had a book written about them which I loved. I was able to even buy a fake 86 jersey from eBay! And let us not forget Sepp Piontek!
You make a good point about 98 being the best-gelled team but I also think Bo Johansson played a good offensive style too. In 2000 as well, though Denmark lost all 3 games in 2000, I remember the France game where if DK was more clinical in front of goal, they could have caused problems but they played a nice style under Bo!
Morten Olsen was a strange mystery in his time as DK manager and yes Hareide played a sleepy style of football. Any rumours who the next manager could be?

After reading wiki about the UN sanctions on Yugoslavia at the time it made very interesting reading, Sporting events held in Yugoslavia to be boycotted but no mention of banning them from Tournements outside Yugoslavia.

Of course you wouldn't hold international sport competitions in a very unstable country soon to be a theatre of war. Of course it means outside Yugoslavia else it doesn't make sense. Stop speaking bollocks.

Seems like the story get a bit inflated every few years, especially the whole 'All the players were halfway on vacations or getting settled in with the BBQs'-spiel.
We had 3 or 4 players in leagues that had gone on summer break (Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup, Flemming Povlsen, Lars Olsen) and those were probably the players who needed a small break the most, but the vast majority of the squad were playing in the Danish league - where the final round was actually played after the national team had assembled for their first training! The players from Lyngby were given permission to spend a few hours winning the Danish championship, before they had to report back to the national team.

No, there's nothing wrong with kicking out a country where people are sniping civilians in the street on a daily basis. Plus, Yugoslavia didn't really exist anymore, that's what the entire war was about. Why on earth would Croatian players, Serbian players, Bosnian players etc. play together while they're slaughtering each other in a civil war for independence? It would make no sense.

Are you being a troll? At times they played England, Sweden and France of the park. They should have won the games against Sweden and certainly against Denmark. They were an incredibly sound team technically. That first half again Holland in the semi-final was one of the best games ever and finally the guts they showed against Germany in the final, many of their players were carrying injuries and the Germans none - and the did not "park behind the bus" the way Greece did under a German coach. Get history right and you can't troll.
