- Third project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! These videos will be a great tutorials to make beautiful, scrappy, quilts. My goal is to use up strips that have accumulated in my lifetime of quilting!
Three strips, 2 1/2" x width of fabric will make 6 blocks.
The quilt I made used about 5 yards worth of fabric. YAY!
This project uses two colors plus a background color to create the pattern of step down boxes. The video will show you two different color combinations but you can use any two colors that you like! You could even use lots of colors with a little planning! Watch to the end to see how I made the colored in chart to have a pattern to follow!
The size of quilt I made in the video was perfectly sized to be a Quilts of Valor project. Check out the requirements and information on Quilts of Valor at this website:

I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!
The graph for the pattern is located in the "files" section of our Facebook group.
Consider joining our Facebook group called "The Quilted Forest Friends". This is the only place you'll have access to exclusive free quilt patterns used in some of our other video projects. It's also lots of fun for members to share their project updates. Here's a link to the group:

Such a good series. I could listen to you narrate these all day. You have a very appealing narrative style. I hope this series continues!
A good thing about watching TH-cam quilters is that you see things you wouldn’t have thought of on your own. This is a Rail Fence I never would have come up with and I think it’s really cool! I make QOV’s so I have lots of RWB fabric that would make up great like this. Thanks for this idea!
This is so true!
Bless you, Beverly, for your QOVs.
What are QOV’s and RWB?
@dhardwick1228 QOV = Quilts of Valor, RWB = red, white & blue
@@angelacarnes2894 thank you
The rail fence quilt was the very first quilt I ever made. 5 years later it is still my favorite go-to make it quick quilt!! Love the purple one and happy to have such a great pattern for it ….Thank you!!
I love to see your positive approach to scraps. I usually have more scraps to cut into 5 inch squares 4 1/2 etc. but O have tons of jelly rolls I just look at. So thank you for some great ideas
I am a new quilter. I would love to have to enough scraps to make the quilts you are making. Some day I will be there☺and will enjoy the process of making quilts with left overs! I am enjoying your videos and am getting a lot of great ideas. Thanks so very much! Linda
A great podcast especially for newer quilters. A wealth of info and a excellent podcast. Nice job.
I love red, white, and blue! But the yellow and purple was so pretty. I guess I will have to make them both! lol Thank You for all the info. Barb😊
I first listened to this tutorial while driving….. now is my chance to watch! Many thanks for your style, use of pleasing music and GREAT lesson!!!
Today was my QOV sewing day!
Now that’s a collection of colored pencils! Thank you for the great ideas and a great quilt.😊
Wow! I thought I had a lot of scraps! 😂That’s a brilliant way to use them!
I'm inspired to use blue, tan, an coral to make a beach quilt.
I was just saying, I always forget how nicely gold goes with purple. I mused to my partner that I might need to do a purple and gray with gold accent project - and they reminded me that purple and gold are the local university colors, which I couldn't give two cents about. I wouldn't want to have others see my quilt and assume I'm a big college sports fan, or something! All silly, of course. Love this series!
Great video and even better series! I look forward to it each month. I have started putting my 2 1/2 inch scrapes in a different pile to make some of these quilts.
Какая красота, как я люблю копаться вот в таких коробках с обрезками....эх подарил бы кто нибудь на Новый Год одну такую коробку...я бы до конца жизни молилась бы за этого человека...❤
Thank you for sharing. I loved both your purple and yellow quilt and the red, white and blue quilt. You have a gentle pleasant voice and simple clear instructions - as a new quilter, I really appreciate both. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
What a beautiful quilt from scraps; can't wait to try it. Thank you.
I’m going to use green and browns to make this. I have a lot of earthy tones that will look great with a creamy background
This quilt would look great in all the primary colors for a child. Or a great rainbow colored quilt.
Grey,peaches and pale aqua.😮
@@violetlaferriere3985I like your idea of color combos
Oh my goodness so cute! So many options, purple & green, blue & yellow, the list could be endless.
Thank you for the ideas & tutorial
I L❤️VE Red,White&Blue !!!
I am LOVING these videos!! My trash stash, as I call it, looks very much like yours and you have given me the confidence to face it like a champ!! Please keep this series going and when you're done with 2 1/2 strips, try doing a series with smaller bits and pieces. I have lots of those too.
I am truly enjoying this series! Thank you for all that you do!!!
You are so welcome!
Envisioning teal green, rose, and gold... I love these videos! Excellent graph, btw! 😃
I don't quilt, but this a way to use scraps to make a lap throw for nursing home patients. I like to watch your videos because you take a lot of the guess work out of sewing simple projects. Thank you for sharing,
Looks like a great quilt for a University of Northern Iowa fan!
Thank you for the inspiration! I’d like to make a blue and orange version… my college’s colors. Your two turned out great!
Wow, this looks so wonderful! Thank you so much, I’ve included this on my wannado list🎉 ❤️😀
Wonderful!
I recently found you on TH-cam and I've been watching you work. I enjoy your selection of patterns and colors and would like to see this particular quilt in blacks and reds. Thanks.😊
Hello! I just found your channel its great. Your voice is calming and just love the strip quilts!! My brain is churning on my next quilt!! Thank you!!
I have put in a request to join your FB group. Love your quilts! Thank you!
Such a versatile pattern. I really into the blue and gold combination right now or just plain scrappy.
Pinks and greys combination I think it would look nice😊
both colors are beautiful but, the yellow and purple were my junior high school colors and purple is my favorite color so it's my fav, thanks for sharing
Love, Love Love this quilt. I have been watching since you started this monthly 2.5 inch series. I have subscribed. Thanks so much for the great inspiration. I would like to try this one in blues and greens.
The possibilities are endless here. I love that! Blue and orange would be pretty. I love the purple and yellow version!
I'm fascinated how you manage to keep track of the colours you need to use and keeping the momentum without losing the pattern. Blows my mind!
Pink and coral would be fun for a springy quilt
LOVE THE SIMPLICITY..WE ARE FROM IOWA TOO
Nice pattern!
This looks great. It is nice to see someone who sews like me. Not many people chain piece like you do. It is great
Thanks for sharing!❤
New to quilting. Thanks for your. Helpful hints. I'm going to do red, white & black for my son.
Love both your quilts.
You have a lot of pretty scraps. I wouldn't have that many. Your quilt is so pretty. Thanks for video
Lovely colour
This is going to be a great scrap buster for my red, white and blue strips! Thank you.
Really enjoying your channel!
I think I'll try a blue & yellow for my best friend. I promised her a king quilt but it's taking a while. So a lap quilt will be nice.
Plus if I make it long, it will be a "Recliner-sized" quilt. (Long enough for her 6'2" hubby to pull to his upper chest & still tuck under his feet.!)
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for the video 😊
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏I LOVE IT❤
I love your TH-cam channel❤ I started the year with you with the project boxes and doing what a month but that my homie just burn so I can keep up with that but I am loving your scrap series and your state of the month. I love the way you teach you use beautiful fabric and I just so appreciate the time you did a cake to this thank you so much Charolett Howard from Texas
You are good with color.
I would buy that green pile of wonderful
Love both color way but think the Red, White and Blue is my choice to do
Great use of strips. This was useful! I love the block because it’s easy but sure makes a statement. My brother just received a quilt of valor which was a rail fence! Thank you, Connie from Kentucky
Great ideas
I enjoyed your video
So much fun to watch you make these quilts. They are so pretty!
Great idea.
I don't remember if it was the late 80' or early nineties, fashion designers were putting strong brown but not nearly black, with strong purple, hot pink and strong teal together. Though the brown and one of the others were in separate garments. It is sorta like flamingo colours, with teal sky and brown water, purple night sky? It was very striking at the time. Put some on a mat and see how it goes together?
You'll be there a while, wow, you've done some quilts, so much fun.
Could some shorter bits go end to end as leaders and enders, then work as part of a jelly roll race style top? You could also do 2 short bits for a 4,1/2"brick unit (square) and put them together like a scrappy narrow rail fence? Or just cut bricks for bigger potato chip blocks. You should be able to do a trip around the world, with like 20 different contrasts, and no repeats? You have so many possibilities.
So is separating each lot by sizes when you get to them, and folding the longer ones next, to tame them further? All the best
I love this quilt!
Those quilts are gorgeous
Que hermoso trabajo. Me encanta la combinación amarillo y morado. Saludos desde Colombia
Love them both but i have lots of red blue and green so thinking of a red white and blue and a green red and white. You always have such good ideas.
I love the purple, yellow quilt! Thanks for sharing.
Lovely!! I’m partial to red white and blue!!
I love sewing strips. It’s so relaxing. Thanks for sharing your pattern
My favorite colors are red, white and blue so that one would be my favorite but the purple, white and yellow quilt is stunning. I’m glad I found your channel; I really need to get through my scraps and this is a great idea!
One of my fave combos is pink, brown and green. Yes, pink and green. They remind me of flowers on the bush! ❤
What an awesome quilt..new way to do rail fence! Love it ❤
Beautiful, imaginative quilt. Thanks for sharing. ❤👍from Somerset, UK
Thank you! 😊
I’m going to use this pattern for a baby blanket. The colors will be mostly blues but I may have to accept a little inconsistency in the cord because I’m using stash and not buying new fabric. 😃
Beautiful quilts! Love that you share ways to use up our scraps! I think a black and Orange for Halloween would be cute and of course a Christmas one would be cute. Your pastels would be pretty for a spring quilt.
Thank you for sharing these lovely blocks. I love your attitude. Grab and go. Don’t over think. Just go for it.
Great Job!!
It’s a fun quilt. I love the colors
This series has captured my attention! I have loved all 3 so far and can't wait for the next one!
Aqua and spring green would be fun
Really like that version of the Rail Fence. Sure goes on my ToDo list.
I love finding new was to make QOV quilts. Will definitely try this one.
I love your work . Thank you for sharing
Impressive, thanks for sharing. 👍❤️😊
I love this video and I am hoping to make a purple and teal quilt.
It is lovely I think a hot pink and dark blue combo would look good
Awesome! I have been patiently waiting for #3
More to come!
I’m making a quilt for a ten year old boy. It will have forest green, prints of camping and dinosaurs and maybe white or royal blue. Or the green will be the backing and the white or blue will connect the various prints I have collected.
Thank you for the scrap patterns, I can always use those!❤
Our Quilt Guild like many others makes community quilts. a lot of the quilters donated their 2.5 inch strips. your pattern is a winner. There are so many variations of the rail fence. I like yours because of the alternate square using both primary colors. thank you for all your strip videos.
Love this idea! I never would have thought of it. Now it’s definitely on my bucket list. Anyone would love to receive it. Thank you!
What a wonderful idea 🤩 Thanks so much for sharing these beautiful quilts with us 👏👏🇬🇧
Red,white,blue ❤
It a true fact I ever throw away one piece of fabric a child need the expression of ❤
Really nice. Thanks for doing the math too
Glad it was helpful!
Browns are really nice with soft blues and pinks. I'm really enjoying this series. Thank you.
Beautiful quilts. Thanks for the tutorial and coloring page
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loving your attitude of ‘no over-thinking’! 😎😁
I love the pattern. I want to make one in pink and light blue/turquoise.
Ooh, i might rainbow this😁🌈
