Is the M3 Pro MacBook Worth Buying for Video Editing?

  • In this video I talk about my first impressions with the new M3 MacBook Pro. I purchased the M3 MacBook Pro to speed up my workflow since I've seen so many creators talk about how great Mac's are, well I had to see for myself.
    I've used Windows for over 20 years!! It's a big change for me, but I'm willing to persevere if it's worth it.
    Is it? Watch the video to find out.

    Hey I work as a professional video editor mainly in the ad film industry where we shoot on arri and red cameras sometimes even sony vegas... as an "offline editor" who's main focus is to edit the story, put out a reference music track and some sfx.... the base m3 pro is more more more than enough for just editing...
    The process that we follow for professional editing is that the arri raw or the r3d or the mxf gets transcoded to 1080p apple pro-res 422 for fcp and premiere or dnxhd mxf for avid media composer.
    Once the edit is locked we send out an xml or edl to the colorist who is mostly working out of davinci resolve or baselight. They use the xml and replace the mov clips with the raw and grade on it. Once the grade is locked the final delivery of the film then happens at the online edit which is done on autodesk flame systems which are based on linux...
    If we consider the m3 pro which I use too for professional editing... then its more than enough. I always feel that the best way to edit is to transcode no matter how good your system is... just transcode it overnight or if its less just go for a morning walk and breakfast thats all it requires... do the edit... once locked switch to raw and grade + render if you are the only person delivering the final file....

      That's really cool, thanks for sharing. A good reminder for anyone wondering if the base model is good enough. I am still really happy with my choice to buy an older max as it works great with the Sony Codecs in 4k so I don't have to make proxies... But I bet following a similar method to yoursv would make the prices even smoother. Good share!!

    what I like about this video is how it comes from someone who transitioned from a windows setup into the macbook. Most reviews I've seen on this model come from seasoned macbook users and they're always comparing two different silicon chips' performances, which is NOT wrong at all and it's very fair since it's important to know what the upgrades are in newer models. but the way they always said "dont buy this, buy that" and only points out on the minimal or at least not noticeable until you compare side by side type of drawbacks makes me look at the model very negatively and have second thoughts about transitioning, which again, happens every year when newer models come out. Thanks for the genuine first impression and thoughts video.

    I've been a Windows/Android user for ever as well, but lately I've been thinking about the MacBook Pro because my current PC can't handle editing 4K. I use Davinci Resolve as well. It's pretty scary/exciting thinking about changing but it will be fun learning something new.

      @thesahdstudio  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's exactly what I'm going through...scary / exciting but honestly it's mostly exciting. This thing makes editing in Resolve a breeze it's pretty nuts. Also the screen makes color grading more fun since it just looks so good. I DID just order the Max because it has more ram and a bigger hd, but that won't be arriving until Christmas so I'll keep using this one for another month until I return it. I'll try and get out more content on this Mac and editing 4k files so you can see just how good it is. Also on another note, I just ordered a v90 sd card for my Sony zv-e1 which means I can shoot in xcvc-si which apparently are less compressed video and also even easier to edit. The laptop can handle compressed files just fine but I really want to maximize my editing speeds hehe. Something to talk about at least! I'm mentioning it because maybe you are shooting in really compressed files and if you change those files to a less compressed codec or at the very least, make proxies (I made a vid on that you should watch if you don't), you'll speed up the work flow on your existing setup.

    I purchased this on its release day and was surprised to find that the base model included 18GB of RAM. While I haven't received any updates on the M3 yet, I was quite impressed with the M2 during the time I was using the Air model.
    The 14-inch M3 Pro with 18GB of RAM is sufficient for all tasks, rendering at incredible speeds.
    I use all adobe apps, struggles at MOGRT but thats due to poor compressing that are available.
    The 512GB of storage is ample, but you can always supplement it with a portable SSD if needed.

      You really can't go wrong with ANY of the Apple Silicon chips right? It's just a bit tough figuring out exactly which model you need... it's very easy to over or underbuy. • @DojoOfCool
    @DojoOfCool 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Windows or Mac doesn't matter, but what does matter is with the Mac M-series chips and especially the M3 chips you need to understand the basic chip design and with one favors the work your going to do. With M3 Apple did a lot of juggling of number and types of cores, also reduced number of transistors on one of the M3 chips, and made some chassis changes removing a fan and a port. So you need to understand difference in performance cores vs efficiency core and the number of GPU cores. So you get the right one for the type of work you're going to do. Like I mainly do music so performance cores are important and GPU don't matter. You do video performance is important but GPU cores are very important. So you might of been better off buying a refurbish from Apple M2 Pro of a discounted one from Amazon or BestBuy and saved money and got just as much and in some cases more Mac for less money.
    As the the Apple ecosystem if you not that much of a computer nerd it can be very handy that all the Apple devices talk to each other seamlessly. You can do basically the same thing on Windows using all the Google apps it's not as seamless as Apple ecosystem, but the basics are there.

    for a extra $400, just get the M3 max which should help you a lot more for video editing. It comes stadnard with 36GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, which i think is necessary for photo/ video editing. This year Apple downgraded the cores and overall specs of the Pro chip version to further differentiate the lineup. Sadly, your machine is the one version that is actually worse than last years M2 Pro. But the color is cool and one day the ray tracing may do something for you, but by that time the M6 will be out. Yesterday I actually created two multi-layer 4K videos, down-sampled 7K from my Sony A7IV in 10-bit, denoised with effects. One was created in CapCut which I am playing with and the other Davinci resolve. Each video was about an hour in length and I exported them both at the same time just for fun. My M2 Max 16" 32 didn't break a sweat and while that was going on I was editing my high resolution thumbnails in a 5K panel and watching TH-cam in 4K on another panel. If you were quiet and tilt your head you could hear the fans. My point is this, even the M1's are sick. The performance differences are barely or completely unnoticable and Apple's Mac sales agree with my view. If you are doing something that can touch the power of these chips short of running your own AI model or complicated 3D rendering (I do both and they will make Mac systems beg for mercy), you have to be doing something literally stupid like I did exporting 2 projects at once to touch the power here.

    Struggling with this decision right now. I've got a 1 year old Asus ProArt Studiobook, , and have been looking to build a new desktop to replace it just for Resolve Studio. I've had so many problems with corrupted timelines, lagging, etc on this system that it is just wasting my time. It's a pretty powerful laptop with a 13 Gen I9, 64Gb RAM, and an RTX 4060, but it still struggles way too much, and I as a part time creator I can't afford to have hours of work made useless because I can't open the timeline anymore. Biggest problem I have is the timelines becoming corrupted randomly, which then crash as soon as they are opened. I've contacted Black Magic support, with no resolution. I'm so scared to close Davinci that I just power through an entire edit, render and proof before closing out these days. I don't do a lot of crazy Fusion effects, but do use some Fusion titles and transitions. Little to no color grading at this point. I do use Voice Isolation on just about every edit though. Idk if that helps or if there is an option in Resolve that will help with the buffering/lag. Also personally, I have my foot in both ecosystems, I run a high performance desktop when editing in Premier and other Adobe softwares. I see your going to go ahead and grab the max. I know you will be happy throwing effects and overlays over your video and it won't lag. If your a video content creator rendering multiple clips dropping in your video into apps like captions or cap cut it serves its purpose to invest in any max chip. As the world advances files and apps just get bigger. Apple just needs to scrap the entry level systems and just sell the pro or max chips. Pro is industry standard for computers in general for people to handle projects here and there but if you doing 4k video every week you need the max. The only reason I still use and will keep building Windows systems is because I can customize everything I need in a home build and despite the Apple narrative, there's still plenty of decent hardware out there that do just as well as there SOC design in real world use, but still give you swappable parts.

      And when I use my Windows PC, I miss it. I can fly around on that thing and it still feels good. I still need it for a few apps I can't get on the Mac as well for controlling my network stuff which I haven't figured out on the Mac yet either.

    I'm currently editing videos in DaVinci Resolve on my desktop Windows PC and I'm planning on buying myself a laptop to be able to work anywhere. It's really hard decision for me wether it's gonna be MacBook or Windows machine.
    From one side MacBook build quality is very high, it also looks way better, everyone is compliments it's keyboard, touchpad, sound quality and pretty much everything else but on the other side I worry that I won't like MacOS and even if I will I'd have to learn how to interact with the system from the very beginning which obviously is gonna lead to inability to edit and learn to edit as fast as it was on Windows. Also I'm planning on still using my Windows PC even after buying a laptop and if that's will be MacBook then certainly constantly switching between Windows and MacOS is not going to be a pleasant experience)
    Please let me know what you think. Maybe your advice can make my decision a little bit easier)

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Okay switching between the two isn't ideal butt it isn't that bad. You can put Chrome or whatever else you want on the Mac... And while it takes a little while to get used to some of the different commands and shortcuts, overall I think it was actually great. Worst case scenario you can reprogram the buttons and create your own shortcuts to match that of windows and then it would be a very smooth transition. A lot of people do it. And there's just so many little apps you can have that make it more of a Windows experience like rectangle which helps you snap your windows around etc.
      Yeah honestly no Windows laptop really comes close to matching the video editing experience of the MacBook. If you want portable power I think you're going in the right direction. It's nice to buy used to save a few bucks but if you try buying new you can always return it. That's what I did.

It's why the Apple Silicon chips are so good and why most Windows are not. A lot of the Intel 11th+ Gen chips (with a K on them e.g 14700K) use QuickSync which is their own media engines that will make working with most video codecs MUCH better. Haha right? On one hard, like you said, yes. It's worth it. I guess the real question is 'Is it worth upgrading for?'. I'm sure a lot of people have M1's or older computers and really want to know just how much better it'll be. I tried to showcase (in other videos as well) exactly how well it performs in the Resolve so if others use it in that app, they can see just how much better it is. But yeah, I ended up getting a M1 Max and it works great for my needs / price point. What computer are you rocking?

    Please can you help a beginner here. I am yoga teacher. I use one setup (frame), one video, 40 min or so, fade in, fade out, little colout grading (brightness mostly) and ad some music in a background an background noise reduction. I normally have 1080p videos but considering going to 2k or maybe 4k in a future.
    How long does the export on this video lasts?
    This is important because I have yoga centar in Croatia and on top of my 20+ videos a month of editing, I have 30 more from my yoga teachers. So I need to have quick export. My edit lasts for about 10 min TOPS because I don't have much to do and it's all simple and automatic, but I have a lot of videos to process.
    Thank you very much for your help. I want Macbook Air, but I am not sure 16gb, 512 ssd M2 15'' will be fast enough. I edit in CapCut.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      What are you editing on now and how long does it take?
      The Air should work fine for you but it's not really built for video editing. You'll want fans on there especially for quick exports, and that's where the MacBook Pro's really shine. I mean honestly you should probably do what I did and get yourself a M1 Max. The Max have extra video encoders on the CPU and absolutely shred through video editing.
      As far as how long it takes, I mean it's minutes... and that's me editing 15 minute 4k videos with h.265 compression which are the hardest to work on. If you're doing 1080p it'll just blast through that very fast... I can't say how long exactly because I don't know, but it will be fast.
      While the Air can do it, I wouldn't recommend it. I'd recommend at LEAST a MacBook Pro... and honestly, if video editing is your main thing and you make money off it, do yourself a favour and get the Max. I wanted to save money and bought a used one and am extremely happy with it. Hope this helps!
