No nonsense, no bias, straight to the point and a insightful look into a very common real life use case! great video!
Finally a video with out all the extra hype about the latest chips and benchmarks
This is *exactly* the sort of testing that reviewers should do when assessing video editing performance of a system. Nearly every other TH-cam reviewer limits themselves to very basic playback tasks and rendering / exporting workflows. The reality is that in many cases >90% of the time video editing is spent on the timeline (trimming/moving clips, adding transitions/effects, adding text etc.) - unless you are heavily into color-grading or motion-graphics. You are generally only exporting videos "a few times a day" - possibly only once every few days if it's just a hobby, so it's the speed and responsiveness of the tasks you perform hundreds of times a day where the difference is felt.
It's great to see that even with zero optimizations that the M3 Pro is keeping up with multiple 4K video streams. This means there is a lot of room to push it even further with appropriate performance speed ups (see below).
A few observations from your video that might be interest:
(1) You were using a UHD timeline in the project, but this is generally not necessary and you can edit everything in 1080p and change it back before final renders/exports. There is no quality lost doing the edit in 1080p because the underlying video is still UHD/4K (with a few exceptions for effects/color-grading/keying which should use the full resolution). The 1080 timeline will put a lot less load on the system and unless you are editing on a massive 8K screen, you will probably not see the difference between a 1080 viewer window or a UHD one given it's normally less than a quarter of the screen real-estate
(2) I understand that changing the timeline resolution in the project settings is *different* to altering the Playback->Timeline proxy resolution setting. I think the difference is the stage at which the resolution of playback is altered - i.e. only for monitoring, or before other processing. This can change the impact on performance, and has some gotchas when doing text or effects work to prevent you using low-resolution inputs instead of your high-resolution source material.
(3) I also noticed that in your project settings, the proxy media output was set to ProRes 422 HQ at the same resolution as your timeline - which is the highest quality (non-RAW) version of ProRes, and generates very large files that are unnecessary for a proxy workflow. The default should really be ProRes Proxy 1080p on a Mac, which are a lot more manageable and generally smaller than your H.264 media, with the benefit of playing back more easily when the machine is under load.
(4) Resolve now has a separate application on macOS called "Blackmagic Proxy Generator" which means you can generate your proxies outside of Resolve, which is a huge timesaver because it no longer locks-up the Resolve UI while it generates proxies. The advantage of the new Apple Silicon Macs is that the generation of H.264,H.265 or ProRes proxies is hardware accelerated, and I've found it to be a 3-5x real time for UHD H.264 files on an M1 Max Mac (e.g. a proxy for a 10 minute clip will take 2-3 minutes to generate)
In practice I don't notice the difference between H.264 UHD/4K files and proxies on my M1 Max Mac, but I can see that disk I/O (and a little bit of CPU/GPU load) is a lot greater when using the original source media. For 2-3 streams with minimal effects you probably won't notice, but I expect it would become noticeable the more complex the timeline becomes.
Thank you for your lovely comments and tips. I recently changed my timeline to 1080p since I realised UHD wasn't necessary. I'll definitely give your other suggestions a try, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
I bought my first, completely new MacBook a year ago, and since then not a day has gone by when I am not surprised by how powerful it is. It is only the 13" MBP with M2, but 24 GB and 1 TB of storage. I have used many different computers and operating systems over the last two, nearly three decades, and yet I have rarely had as much fun working on them as I have on this MBP. Mine is already a beast, so yours must come straight from hell. ;) I hope you have lots of fun and enjoyment with your new tool.
Greetings from Germany
Davinci on my old Xeon server took about 2 hours to compile a video - my Macbook M3 12/18/18 (1 tb) completes the same task in 1 min, 30 seconds...!!! What the crap - this thing is a beast!
Your experience seems to be based more on the CPU taking all the load instead of a GPU. The M3 Pro is impressive as far as integrated graphics but it's not a beast, even in Apple world. The beast is AMD and NVIDIA.
I once in a while stumble across great videos like these that go in depth about what other creators don't really talk about. I appreciate this. I hope you keep creating the fire content
Thank you! I really appreciate it! ☺️
I always find videos from minimum subscribers worth watching. no extra blah blah. to the point and clean content. you earned a fellow editor subscriber :)
I used Fusion on a 2007 MacBook when performing consulting work. Companies usually used all MS products & were always amazed when I’d present via split screen running Windows & Apple OS simultaneously. It ran flawlessly & actually ran Windows more efficiently. So my guess is that it should run even better today on a MacBook Pro M3 Pro.
Great and practical demonstration. Recently switched to Mac from PC as well. I’ll only do light video editing, but got the same laptop cuz I figured why not. Yeah…never going back to PC again. I can do normal stuff (email/word processing/multiple apps running) and it never even gets warm to the touch. The endless battery life and seamless sync between phone and iPad are the icing on the cake. Really is an astonishingly well made laptop.
Best video on the MacBook! It's informative, peaceful, and crystal clear. It answered all my questions about how the specs handle video. Showing the monitor and GPU during the review was exactly what I wanted to see. Thank you!
Im kind of new to video editing... i use Lumafusion on IPAD PRO M1 . It does 4k with no problem . Once again people can say what ever they like about apple/macs etc. But you struggled to edit with a desktop gaming pc, while we edit 4k on a tablet. No fans, no noise , no case ..nada. Great video simple, direct , the way it should be. Peace ✌🏻
I edit 1080p videos with a few transitions, and the base M3 MacBook Air has been enough for me. I wanted the 16gb model but financial constraints led me to get the 8gb version, but for the occasional edit is quite capable
I really appreciate you doing this video, but I really wish you had taken the project from your Windows PC and opened it in Resolve on the Mac so we could really see an apples to apples comparison. But even without that, it's clear just how great the M3 Pro chip's CPU and GPUs does with 3 4K video streams. Big help, so thank you!
I’m having the same issues editing in Final Cut on my 2015 Intel MacBook Pro. I’ve known for a few years that I need to upgrade. The new MacBook Pro M4 models look to be coming out next week. Going to have to bite the bullet and dive in. But your video tells me it will be worth it. Really looking forward to that smooth, fast editing experience. It might even encourage me to create more videos?
nice video! i have the 16 inch macbook pro M3 but i only upped the ram to 32gb (much needed)as a video editor and vlogger.
the m3 macbooks are a beast for video editing...
Would u say an air is okay for editing ?
If you double click on the cpu load graph you will get a pop out window showing cpu load across the cores. The red and green indicate whether the os deems it system or app work, and total height indicates load.
Thanks for the tip!
Super helpful and to the point video. Exactly what I needed to see if this will do what I need it to. Thank you so much!
This really helped, I was doubtful if 18 gb memory would be enough for 4k video editing but this helped to clear that! Thanks!
All these videos about the short-comings of the M3 Pro and 4k Editing are using the 18GB RAM version...Wouldn't it be reasonable to assume it would improve with the 36GB version?
Not really, the main bottleneck is the GPU. As can be seen in this video and others as well, the GPU caps out way before the Ram does. Sure getting 24/36 is great but in this video, the RAM usage never goes beyond 16 GB
i'm surpised you would need proxies as the a6400 only shoots 8Bit 4.2.0 from memory. In Davinci you can just select ALL clips and hit create proxy. You don't have to click on each clip. Also, stacking 4 clips, is not actually playing 4 clips, it's playing 4 tracks of audio but only the top video clip is actually being played. To test a stack of clips there would need to be some opacity so all 4 clips can be seen, therfore all 4 clips would be shown.
So helpful. Loved seeing actual use. Great work! -Marc
Great video, finally I've found a video that gets to the points that everyone wants to know about this system
Great Review , can you tell how long will a m3 pro takes to export 30 minutes of 4K video with 3 layers?
Just subscribed, nice to see so many clear simple and calm explanations. Really nice site Sam.
Very real world use type of content I like!
Amazing video.... exactly what i wanted to see
Good Video. Glad to see another Aussie making content.
Just a quick audio suggestion as I had issues recently. Pass the audio through Adobe Podcast AI to get rid of a lot of the echo. A wireless Lav (like the rode) is also great vs on camera directional mics.
Thanks for the tips! I'll check it out. The echo drives me mad! Haha. The room is all tiles and quite open, so it's not the best space for recording in but it's what I have for now.
That is a beautiful timeline. 🤤
Great review but with one thing: that’s are not 2,3,4…layers of videos. Meanwhile in your viewer you see one video, then is one video layer.if you want to test the all 4 video layer you have to view all 4 videos at the same time. You have to resize them to view them all at the same time.
Totally true
I recently purchased the same MBP as yours so I'm biased, but it's the perfect laptop for my use case. Thanks for the review and comparison.
Curious never stumbled over your page before good job thank you
For the base model. Its impressive.
The important thing to note is how much ram you're packing. If you only have 8gb ram, it's not a fair appraisal of the M3 Pro
lovely video, keep on creating :)
sound is crucial, thanks.
Idk why, but TH-cam is recommending me a lot of videos of aussies reviewing Macs.
Well... i'm loving it.
Greets from BR for ya.
Great video. What a beast.
My question, I have nothing phone 2 and I am thinking of buying MacBook m1 for editing vlog recorded in phone 2.
Can I easily transfer video file to MacBook for editing
Hey how about the Mac Book m3Pro 14inch 16gb ram and 512 gb ssd . Reply for this
Can it dtive the widescreen monitor while doing the editing ok?
How does it perform in 8K raw editing with Davinci?
After Davinci 19 update ?
Is it smooth?
Great video! Exactly what we want to see instead of weird algorithm hype
An issue is SSDs have limited life and virtual memory uses the SSD. IMO for longer computer life in a Mac, one needs 2 TB drive and 48 GB RAM. And buy good external drive systems to store everything you can outside of the computer. Apple charges a huge premium for drives and RAM which is a shame as the base specced machines are good value considering the speed and overall high quality.
Hey Sam, i built my current desktop 3 years ago to edit 4K video without using proxies, and it does it well, i use PP and as everyone know, PP crashes a lot and i dont blame the computer for that. We have a youtube channel with 60 k subs and are starting to get serious about making YT a thing, and now my wife does most of our vlog editing. I am looking at getting a laptop to edit while my wife works on the desktop, just trying to be productive while she works, i could do shorts or work on after effects, will the MacBook do it, that is the question. Larry
Hey Larry, I haven't used After Effects but it's probably similar to fusion, but from what I've read online, it can be demanding. The MacBook Pro I have should handle most tasks really well I would think. But if you're doing more intensive projects upgrading to 32GB RAM would improve performance. You might want to chat with people who use After Effects regularly since they'll have better insights. Sorry, if that's not really much help!
Impressive. That means final cut should be even smoother
This the type video I want
Great video
very simple thank you
Only in Davinci Studio will you see the true performance of this MacBook :)
Hi , Do you recommend buying a MacBook M3 Pro with 18 RAM if I specialize in architecture and like using Paralles and 3D software like Revit?
Hey, I'm not too sure, I haven't used that type of software so I couldn't really say.
You dont buy Macs for those types of applications. 3D applications rely heavily on GPU and dedicated memory. Apples silicon shares it memory and although it's super fast and efficient, it's not on the level of a GPU with dedicated memory.
@@captureinsidethesound that's not important
No. If your software doesn't run natively on macOs (which most of architecture sw does not) than there is no benefit getting a Macbook. Saying that as Mac user since 1994 who rarely touches Windows.
@@ZhuJo99 , that depends on the 3D application, simple CAD type modeling or organic type sculpting? Regardless, iOS has multiple professional 3D applications for this. I use Nomad Sculpt even for CAD type modeling.
iOS even has a two Ray Tracing/Path Tracing applications for photorealistic rendering, Armor Paint and OctaneX. Although, they are not heavily marketed and receive negativity from amateurs, they do the job well. Especially, with the M1 or higher iPads.
There are also browser based applications on the horizon that are optimized for the iPads M-Series and powerful Android tablets using advanced WebGL and WebGPU features. Actually, they are for any mobile silicon with console level GPU performance, including Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or higher.
ooo how did you get that gpu history?
Open your Activity Monitor, then go to the Window menu at the top and select GPU History. The GPU History window will open. 😊
When I spoke to apple folks they told me that final cut pro is an apple product, and so works much better than Da Vinci with the macbook :).
Hey i want to buy mackbook pro 18gb ram and mainly i want for video editing I’ll use davinchi resolve photoshop premium pro will that be okay in it? I dont have budget for 36 gb one🥲
For doing stuff which you mentioned is always a must to have 16gb and above of ram, and yes the 18gb ram is even better but 16gb is just fine. Do not get the 8gb
El m3 Pro es una maravilla. Aunque siendo honestos, cualquier M1,M2 o M3 funciona mejor que una grafica del 2016 (RTX 1060).
I always appreciate YT chapters if possible so I can skip to different topics. Kind of just wanted to skip around
No worries, thanks for letting me know. I'll remember to add them next time.
FACTS ❤❤❤
a massive dirty secret about 4k-trying to work with 4k is clearly a drain on the computer, not withstanding massive memory/storage demands. Many commercial films use 1080p. I would probably use 1080p, not 4k.
The reason why you had a bad experience is because you used AMD and not intel, Intel chips (only the ones with igpu) since the 12th gen are really good in hardware based encoding. The media engine inside of them actually support the most 4k h.265, 5k h.265 and 6k h.265 codecs, Apple's M3 Max chip is a close second. AMD is known for it's Raw Power that is great in Blender, Vray or AI Tasks, but in Video editing (from 1080p to 6k), The video encoders inside of the igpu make Even the intel i5 12600K better than any AM4 Ryzen chip, EVER MADE! Hope you learned something new today!
I did! Thanks for sharing.
Not really fair to compare such a old windows pc with a Mac. Have a m3 Max Book but for example my Desktop with a rtx 4080 is up to 3 times faster in solving magic mask.
😂 My Acer will be 8 years old in December and the latest workable version of Resolve is 17.4.1 😂
Oops bit hasty with the send button 😂😂😂
I meant to ask how better or faster the Delivery time is now?
And finally I'm interested to see the new set up with the wide screen monitor and wireless peripherals 🌝
WHAT VIDEO PLAYER TO USE?!?!?!?!?!? NOTHING WILL PLAY MY 4G AND HIGHER VIDEOS. AHHHHHHHHH
If you are a video editor and you don't need portability please buy yourself a PC
Macbook have too little ram and storage and cost of upgrading is HUGE
You don't wanna edit ssds hanging to your PC, move files around, relocate projects.
If you are 3D or motion graphics designer then MacBook will be half as powerful while costing double.
GET A PC, ADD unlimited storage upgrade at a cheap price , these days full size motherboards come with 3 nvme slots and lots of sata drives,
All this at the cost of a BASE MACBOOK.
YOU CAN"T REPAIR MACBOOK and ONLY 1 Year warranty.
PC parts have 3-5 Years warranty and if one component stops working- change it don't have to buy a new PC.
APPLE IS A SCAM.

See, Macs are built for this. I don't like PC's, and windows at all. IMO I think they are garbage compared to Macs and that's my opinion.
