Upgrading from a 2018 MBP and ordered a refurb space black M3 Pro 18/512 for $1700 and I'll be getting it Wednesday. Is there another model that ends up slightly better? Sure, but this felt like a really great balance for me. Still going to be a massive improvement all around. Had the other one for 4 years and could keep using it, but had an opportunity to do the upgrade so I did.
My 2018 MBP had to have its battery replaced when they were replacing my keyboard (yay those awful switches) bc the battery life was completely decimated. So some systems still have issues w/the battery being degraded by living plugged in. I do have a 5TB and 2TB external both plugged in to my system currently, and I keep World of Warcraft on the fast SSD and there's no issue w/the performance.

Thanks for the review. I recently bought the M3 Pro 16-inch, and it’s been a game-changer. I use it primarily for coding, video editing, and some Unity and Blender work. The 18 GB of RAM is perfect for my needs.
This new machine is replacing my 2015 MacBook Pro, which was in a similar price range. This new machine feels like magic! The sound quality and battery life are outstanding.
The screen is a significant upgrade, even though I was happy with my old one. The blacks and color pop are incredibly vibrant.
Also, it’s great to be able to play Baldur's Gate wherever I want. The performance is better than my high end PC gaming laptop and the Mac doesn't overheat. I only wish there were more games.
If you’re like me and don’t upgrade often, this machine is a solid A+.

Pheww, I can imagine what a beast the M3 Pro really is. I use my M1 MacBook Pro 14" from mid December 2021till today, working/playing on it around 11 hours a day, 8/10 - 9 hours plugged in or overnight. My battery health is still 93% with 211 charging cycles. Man, this thing goes on for weeks with 2-3 Google Chrome windows ( 10-20 tabs ) each, 2-3 projects on PHPStorm which I never close cause I am testing and developing things, 2-3 windows on WebStorm (JetBrain IDEs are kinda RAM hungry), all the services, Outlook, Postman, One Drive and so many things I never exit while working with Photoshop, Lightroom, Davinci Resolve, just closing the lid and calling it a day. I have the 12 CPU/18 GPU/1 TB M3 Pro 14, and it's fantastic. What I love most is how much performance it offers while operating in near silence. I also tried an M3 Max version and while notably faster, it was also substantially noisier for my workflow so I'll happily trade the extra power for a quieter system. Regarding the battery, I know Apple has done a lot to optimize health, but I use an app called AlDente to limit the maximum charge. Even at 80 percent, I can still use the laptop for hours on battery or disable the software for the times I need the laptop fully juiced.

Got 14" M3 Pro (full) this Friday. I ordered BTO rather than get Max immediately (money it wasn't).
Why? Because, ironically, efficiency cores. My work (full stack web developer) uses efficiency cores much more than performance cores.
Honestly, I think Apple targeted M3 Pro specifically for people like me. People running virtualization a lot, using Docker, many smaller tasks running in background for which efficiency cores absolutely dominates.

It really annoys me how people get carried away with “spec pooping” and thinking they need at least the Max chip with 36GB of RAM. These machines are so well optimized and fast because of the SOC that it’s leaps and bounds faster than what was available in Intel years in the top end machines and people also got their work done on those.

You mentioned the black color and said that you had no problems with it. I've had one of those black Macbook Pros for a while now, and I found a functional problem with the color that I never had on any other laptop: when I go to plug something in, the black of the body and the black inside of the plug-hole are similar enough that I can't see where the plug should go, unless there is bright light on the side of the computer. So I have to insert the plugs by feel. I think that Apple should have designed the cover color to have a color which contrasts with the black of the inside of the plug-holes, at least near the plugs.

    Awesome review man!
I've been a Windows enjoyer for my entire life pretty much, as I am an avid gamer. I remember I had a white MacBook from like 2009 or 10 when i was in highschool, but i was pretty bummed out that I couldn't play many games on it. Now that I'm older I have other jobs and hobbies in addition to gaming, but I already have my desktop Windows computer for that. Still I like the idea of a solid laptop I can bring everywhere and work on. I switched from Android to iPhone when the 14 series came out and I am still blown away of how well it runs. Haven't had a single issue with it since i got it, while my Androids kept slowing down and bugging out a lot after about 2-3 years. This has convinced me to give the MacBook Pro M3Pro a shot too. I've seen mostly positive reviews across the board and that makes me confident in this choice. I'm gonna go check it out in a store first just in case, but I see myself getting one in the coming week. :D

The only thing I would have changed was increasing the ram from 16 to 32. I tried out the M3pro 14 base…. Minimal performance difference, but definitely seemed to have some battery benefitsonly. I ultimately went to the base M3max 14” for the 36 GB RAM and 1TB. Best decision I made. I can see the difference in all my workflows. If you have an M2 machine, keep it until M4 comes out or have money to burn for a higher tier system (ie M2 =>M3pro)

I have a maxed out 14” and had total hardware failure with no explanation from Apple other than a motherboard replacement. That was within a week of ownership.
Other than that it’s been running stable, quiet, and is quite powerful. I also own a studio M1 ultra that is also maxed. This feels a touch faster than that. Which is insane!

I have the 14-inch MacBook pro with the base M3 pro since it was released, and it is the best purchase I have made.
It was my first Mac, and I'm an Apple hater, but when I saw the ARM M1 processors, it made me change my mind about the Macbook line (previously the series with Intel CPUs got very hot, and in terms of performance it wasn't worth it the big outlay unlike its competition), and I waited a few years, and when the M3 pro came out, I already thought, it's time to buy it.
My first impressions, speakers with brutal quality, screen with spectacular quality with mini-LED technology, the chassis is excellent, the battery lasts almost 2 days, it does not heat up, you cannot hear fans in daily use, and best of all, it is A real laptop, unlike the other PC laptops I've had, the battery never lasted very long, the performance was disastrous, they got very hot at idle, and the Mac is the complete opposite.

Now, after seeing this video, looks like I might be better off with what you are using and I can use the remaining cash on buying keyboard, mouse and extra storage.😊

I passed on the M3 Pro and chose an M3 Max for two reasons: 1) I wanted the 16" screen and 2) Memory bandwidth. The M3 is 150 GB/s, the M3 Pro is 300 GB/s, and the M3 Max is 400 GB/s. Memory speed matters for a lot of the tasks I perform with the laptop. Your mileage may vary.

Hey Kyle. I’m glad I’m not the only one waking my Mac to find the externals ejected. I was wondering why that kept happening. One of your solutions about having drives connected through a powered dock sounds reasonable, but when I thought about what gets ejected on my end, it’s also my LaCie and OWC RAID drives that have their own power cords. I’ll fiddle with the settings, but for anyone thinking about buying a powered dock, I’m a bit skeptical. I hope it’s a system glitch they will fix in a future OS update.

I agree with all the main points, and don't disagree with anything. I bought the same base model in early December moving up from an M1 Mac Mini, base model but with the 256Gb Drive. That's been the primary point: I don't know if anything still comes with 256 anymore, but for my mix of software development, video production, graphics and 3D work, the machine is 100% fine. So was the Mini, mostly, but the drive was too small. My question was, would the 512 do the job, and it does. I have another 2.5Tb of external SSD storage that is dramatically less fast than the internal drive, but I have enough space inboard to do everything in a current projects folder, and I migrate projects to the externals when their priority for fast performance lowers - making followup edits etc. Even so, the USB-C speeds to the externals is rarely a problem.
I did however, buy it in silver; the black just seemed like a pain in the ass, and the silver is classic Mac. And I figure it lowers the chances of being grabbed from a cafe table if there's a black one nearby....

Honestly, I've been using the M3 Pro for like 5 months now. First of: I am a PC-guy. If you had told me 5 years ago, that I would actually like a Mac, I would have shrugged it off and continued with my life. And don't get me wrong, for work I've been using Macs for the past 9 years now... It's just, that the Intel ones were awful. Especially the 2019 i9 that I had before, was running hot, bricked itself all the time and generally was not a lot of fun. This little powerhouse on the other hand, makes me consider a Mac for myself in the future. Currently, it doesn't make any sense, as I have the Mac Pro available to me as well for private use. But if I would ever leave the company, I would seriously consider buying one. It's silent, faster than my Desktop PC (a low to mid-tier gaming rig) for video-editing and generally, it's a wonderful little product.
