Ford 600 and 800 Tractor Fuel Shut Off Hack!? [[Easy O-ring Replacement?]]

  • This is one of my many crazy ideas, but this time I think it is a good one! I am working on a family members Ford 600. Over the years this fuel shut off has been replaced multiple times. Always because of a 5 cent O-ring. To remove this shut off you must take off the hood and gas tank. Which took me a few hours to do by myself. I even bought a new shut off valve to replace the old one. Then I realized I would just be putting a bandage on the problem. All this could have been avoided if you could just get the shut off apart, but it was not designed that way. My new and improved version will be!
One of my favorite things to do is not just fix things, but try and improve them. I love tearing stuff apart and trying to put it back together better than it was. Even small things. A lot of time small things become big issues. Often my ideas don’t always work out like I have planned. From time to time though I get excited about one of my improvements. This is one of them.
I am no expert tractor mechanic by any means. Most of my experience is on my Ford 8n. As well as my Case backhoe. Luckily Ford 600’s and 800’s are just big 8n’s. One thing that is different between the two is the fuel shut off. 8n’s do not have a shut off on the tank like most 600’s. It is on the sediment bowl. Making this issue not a problem. Although many of these tractors fuel systems vary by year models.
It really amazes me how tractors and automobiles are constructed. It seems like nothing is made with a mechanic in mind. Anything with a o-ring should be easy to change out. Especially when dealing with fuel systems. This task would have been much easier if there was enough clearance above the valve cover to remove the shut off. Although you would still have to replace the entire shut off valve. Which was around $30. All for a 5 cent o-ring.
I really didn’t plan this out the way I should have. Honestly though, I rarely do. My biggest regret was grabbing a random drill bit to drill out the retaining rivet. If I planned it out a little better I could have matched the tap to the drill. Instead of finding a bolt to fit the random sized hole. It thankfully all worked out though.
I still am not a 100% sure if this is a great idea or not. I will let you and time be the determining factor. If nothing else I hope you enjoy the video. Maybe even use this idea or come up with on of your own. Thank you so much to all those who have watched and subscribed! As well as everyone for the encouragement and comments!

Excellent hack! Thanks for posting. Just modified mine and it worked great. This became a necessity for me because even the new petcocks I buy arrived with dried out o-rings.

Have had many failures of the large o ring. Bought several cut offs and replaced o rings several more times, always the large one. Will hold for 3 or 4 weeks then slow leak. Fixed it though, replaced tank with a tank made for 8n or 8oo. It has a side mount for the sediment bowl type shut off. Works great and if ever need to change no disassembly required.

I was looking for an alternative to having to pull the cowling and tank every time I had a leaking valve. I watched your video and did the same thing myself. Works great and will really be nice the next time the issue shows up. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the hack. Worked great.. and yes the info on the O-ring did help!!! The thicker O ring works without sealant!

I subscribed because of the work you were doing on the skiff, but I like tractors and mechanics too. The name of your channel pretty much describes me. Keep the great content coming!

That is good to hear. Thank you for the feedback! I had a hard time coming up with a name. One day I came up with Fish Hunt Cook Tinker and it just stuck. It describes my crazy life pretty well! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I think you might find it easier to remove the two top nuts on the valve cover remove it and the shut off drops right out. Just a suggestion I just did it , all of 15 minutes. Hope this helps in the future .

Pull the valve cover to put new petcocks on/in. It's just a few nuts. (I do like your idea, though!) (Edit: The valve cover'll roll out over the valve rack..)

Has anyone tried using Viton O-rings? That's what you're supposed to use for fuel and chemical applications

Gonna give this a try on my 601 despite the whole fuel shut off assembly being not that old and it’s leaked out a couple gals of fuel.

Thanks! I just took my hood apart getting that thing off there. I was able to remove my fuel petcock off without completely removing hood/body, but don't want to go through any of that again.

It’s not exactly easy to get to. Especially by yourself. I am glad you found it helpful!

Great tutorial on fixing a common problem! I replaced a leaky valve only to have the new one leaking within a month. I had read about this fix and decided to attempt it. I found your video before I stated and was glad I did. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, a video is worth much more!! Great job!

Thank you and I am glad you found the video helpful. I was skeptical about this idea in the beginning, but I feel it is going to work great down the road. Videos have helped me a ton learning about new projects. I am just glad to return the favor to others. Thank you for watching and commenting!

The Tiawan cutoff is JUNK! The threads are cast in so crappy that they strip almost immediately. I'm going to try your fix. Thanks

If you just drilled the rivot out and then only turn it out a certain number of turns it should work without the stop bolt. The oring should provide enough resistance to keep it from vibrating out further

So, what are your thoughts now that you’ve had some time to evaluate it? It seems like a great idea. I just discovered I have a leak on my workmaster in the same spot
