It’s because of the Wii U, even if it wasn’t the Year of Luigi, they would have had the same problems. Every Luigi’s Mansion game has sold at least twice as much as the previous entry. Luigi has a serious following and those followers are very protective of him as am I.
According to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo did the Year of Luigi because the Wii U was reeeally struggling, so they just wanted something to bring more attention to the games being released for it. Ironically, also according to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo hates celebrating anniversaries (notice they've never done a year of any other character), so they had to really be desperate to push this campaign.

They ended it so that the 2014 fiscal year wouldn't also be terrible. Had Luigi's reign been left unchecked, Nintendo likely would have dissolved before they could release the switch. Thank god Miyamoto was able to wrestle back control from his greasy gloved hands.

Luigi got 2 games with his name in the title I think that's kind of notable. combined with his role in dream team and the cameos in 3D world (which they kept up with hiding Luigis in odyssey) it was a pretty cute fun event

I'm sitting here, right, the video paused in the middle of the dark moon segment, trying to think of the year of Luigi things. Right now I can think of Luigi U, Dark Moon, and maybe the Luigi bros game in 3d world? I guess it felt like a way bigger deal in the moment but the fact that I can't think of anything just goes to show that it really wasn't.
The one thing that I don't like about the New Super Mario Bros. games, is that you can only really save the game after a castle level. You can save your game anywhere after you beat the game, which to me doesn't make sense.

Fun fact: The Year of Luigi was one of my inspirations to do a written character study on Luigi back in high school. I was starting to have a much deeper appreciation for Luigi during 2013, especially since i was the younger of 2 brothers growing up. It's rather unfortunate that not a lot of Luigi related content was released as far as games go, and even more unfortunate that it ended up being a major loss for Nintendo. Kind of a shame really. At least we got a cool Miiverse Commuinty during that time. Oh and another thing, technically Luigi made his debut in the Game and Watch adaptation of Mario Bros, which released before the Arcade game. Oops.
While Nintendo never truly “turned it around” with the Wii U, things definitely got better AFTER the Year of Luigi. 2014 brought us Mario Kart 8, Smash 4, Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad, and one of Nintendo’s best E3 showings with the announcements of Super Mario Maker and Splatoon. 3DS was on a better trajectory by then as well. Luigi is a good ol’ boy for trying his best while Nintendo was struggling.

I guess it felt like a way bigger deal in the moment but the fact that I can't think of anything just goes to show that it really wasn't.
The one thing that I don't like about the New Super Mario Bros. games, is that you can only really save the game after a castle level. You can save your game anywhere after you beat the game, which to me doesn't make sense.
3DS Year of Luigi was MY 3DS XL. Loved it. Hated Dream Team tho I never beat it I couldn’t stand it.

as a taller younger sibling to my much more sociable shorter older sibling i relate to mr luigi mario an extreme amount, so the year of luigi was very exciting to me

Fun fact: The Year of Luigi was one of my inspirations to do a written character study on Luigi back in high school. I was starting to have a much deeper appreciation for Luigi during 2013, especially since i was the younger of 2 brothers growing up.
It's rather unfortunate that not a lot of Luigi related content was released as far as games go, and even more unfortunate that it ended up being a major loss for Nintendo. Kind of a shame really. At least we got a cool Miiverse Commuinty during that time.
Oh and another thing, technically Luigi made his debut in the Game and Watch adaptation of Mario Bros, which released before the Arcade game. Oops.

While Nintendo never truly “turned it around” with the Wii U, things definitely got better AFTER the Year of Luigi. 2014 brought us Mario Kart 8, Smash 4, Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad, and one of Nintendo’s best E3 showings with the announcements of Super Mario Maker and Splatoon. 3DS was on a better trajectory by then as well. Luigi is a good ol’ boy for trying his best while Nintendo was struggling.
