Fun fact: despite the fact that this mansion is very detailed, none of the windows of the front of the house exept in the Foyer and on the second floor, match the interior. I saw this by building the mansion in minecraft
Anti Toxine You built the entire mansion yourself? That is beyond impressive I always wanted to do something like that but never had the follow through. Mad props!
That always really annoyed me. Maybe that's why I always had a weird obsession with how eerie those two attic windows were and how you could look out of them with that cinematic view.
@@atomicdragon5385 unfortunatly, it was build on ps vita. I don't know if i can just transfer a map to pc. It's a shame because i putted a lot of effort into it. Just like a lyoko map i made, even if it is unfinished
Fun fact about the ghost ranking! Portrait rank for ghosts is actually dependent on the pearls themselves, not the health drain per go! While it’s true that you need to drain a portrait ghost down to about 10-15 health to get the big pearl, and thus the gold portrait ranking; if you were to catch the ghost in one go, but completely avoid picking up the pearls, the game will recognize that as a poor quality capture, and give you the bronze rank instead. This fact does not apply to the area bosses, as they 1: do not drop pearls, and 2: their rank is factored not only on how many goes it takes for you to defeat them, but also how much health you lose while fighting them!
Luigi's Mansion is Gothic horror: because the primary feature of Gothic horror is the atmosphere and the environment, which the house pulls off in spades.
Speaking as someone who HAD played Mario platformers as far back as the NES era, I really loved this game on launch. When I saw the critical consensus at the time, I was surprised to say the least. I had no expectation that a Luigi game would be exactly like a Mario game; in fact, one of the things I liked the most about it was that it had its own identity.
I don’t remember critical consensus being negative on the game. I think it was consumers. My memory is reviews just docking at some points for being a short game but fun overall. In fact if you look at the reviews at the time most were 4/5 or 8/10. And the lowest I’ve seen are two publications going 7/10. So critically it’s reception is pretty favorable for a launch title.
I have never fully finished the original Luigi's Mansion, however your video has now convinced me to start tracking down a GameCube and a copy of this game. This video came out amazing, and as usual, your videos always manage to turn a day that was going shitty into a great day. Keep up the amazing work, and I'm looking forward to the Dark Moon video, oddly enough that's the only one out of the trilogy I have fully finished and owned.
Firstly, I'm happy you enjoyed the video, and I'm glad it convinced you to check out the original game. I should note that while it's not the best version (and I'll be talking about why after Dark Moon's video) Luigi's Mansion got a remake on 3DS that is still a decent version of the game if the Gamecube version ends up being too costly. Secondly, I hope things improve for you dude. I know you've got it rough. Thirdly, hoping you enjoy the Dark Moon video as well. =D
Bro, save your self some money and emulate it on PC or a homebrew Wii, I was lucky to get another copy after years of not having it, this game has to be my favorite gamecube game because it was so unique and replay value still holds up
Great video Duo! I played Luigi’s mansion so much as a kid but never ended up beating it until probably high school since I couldn’t handle anything creepy xD. But every time I revisit it, I’m surprised about just how much detail there really is in the game.
Oh man I can understand wanting to avoid creepy stuff. Regardless now that you've finished it, it should be easier to contend with. (Well also you're older. lol.) But yeah, this game is a ridiculously impressive accomplishment for its time honestly. Even still to this day it's got a ridiculous amount of detail. =D
Well to be fair I couldn't even think it was weird at the time, but yeah I never understood why people disliked it at the time. It was always cool to me.
This nailed a lot of the details that make this game so great. I always go back for the atmosphere and subtleties as well. There’s really no game that creates the same feeling
1:00 Anyone else find it ironic that people back then didn't like it and now everyone loves Luigi's Mansion? I swear, that game is like a celebrity that just died and everyone loves now
Fun fact: I made an entire trilogy on Super Mario Maker when I was like 10 after E. Gadd fighting King Boo and his main henchman, Magikoopa. Apparently, they had made a cloning machine, which you find at the end of the first level. At the end of the second level, you destroy the machine, and Magikoopa. On the third, the epic final battle between King Boo and E. Gadd. It's my proudest achievement. Also, I never even played Luigi's Mansion so how I knew about E. Gadd, I have no clue.
Having Luigi's Mansion as a first Mario game is a very unique situation, but it just sounds so cool. Luigi's Mansion is special to me on a personal level that I don't know if I can ever describe, but I might get there. I love to see so much passion for the game, from developers and people like you :)
the black-out that happens after boolossus will always be my favourite part. i finally had beaten boolossus which took little me like all day because I couldn't ever get that ONE LAST BOO AND KEPT LOSING UGH. it took me a long time to find the uncle in front of the mirror earlier in the mansion, especially because it was really dark and so many enemies, it actually made me scared to run around and search for him! I think one of my friends helped me figure it out :o
I love this game! I watched a brief section of it and then bought Dark Moon, I loved it so much that I had to play the first one… I played it on my 3DS and loved every bit of it.!! The story is really charming, I love how Luigi is a scaredy-cat but his love for his brother makes him brave… and out of the three endings this one is the most heartwarming!
Mr. Luggs freaked me out as a kid too. More so before I got in the room, because you can hear his weird eating noise in the hallway when you walk-by before getting the key in
I felt too scared to play it when any area was dark still, I got super scared in the third area and had a hard time in the basement. It scared the shit outta me as a kid, also in mario 64 the spooky level was too scary for me to and no one talks about it
4:30 he "Technically" Appeared in Mario sunshine, because F.L.U.D.D was created by E-Gadd, when you do the first boss in Pinna Park, and Bowser Jr. explains that the paintbrush he was given was by a "Strange old man, in a white coat" and when F.L.U.D.D repeats him, the camera zooms in on Fludd with E-Gadds face on it as a logo.
What makes this game perfect for me is that there is 0 fat on it. It's not long, but it's just a non-stop burst of perfection in gameplay and atmosphere. One of my all time favorite games. I love Luigi's Mansion 2 and 3 also, but Next Level Games could really learn a thing or two about filler...
I never played the original unfortunately, but it's 2 sequels Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3 I have played, and just the atmosphere of being creepy yet charming still applies in both of them. Every time I play one of them, they never fail to give me a sense of accomplishment, whether from beating a boss, clearing a room and finally being able to see what's behind the next door, or even just finding all the gems. And I will admit, Luigi saving Mario at the end of the game is likely one of the most heartwarming scenes within the Mario series, but that's just my opinion. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna boot up my switch and play some Luigi's Mansion 3.
Glad you enjoyed this one. Honestly though, this one was a little rougher than I'd have preferred it to be. It's one of the only videos I edited on Sony Vegas, and it shows.
Ah the memories with this game run deep for me... it was the first single-player game I played and beat. Before then my only gaming experience was Smash Melee and Mario Party 4 with siblings. Moved straight onto Wind Waker afterwards and Paper Mario ttyd after that. Often times people say that nostalgia is what makes me value them so highly, but I’m not sure anymore. 20 years later and I’m finding people of vastly different ages still value this era of Nintendo. Am I just nostalgia blinded or were these games actually quality?
I played this game from when i was 5 to when i was about 14 and i never knew you could find the twins hiding places with the vacuum. I legitimately would just go in and guess until i found them
Awesome video! LM is my favorite game of all time and your points to what makes it great are spot on. On a side-note I’ve had a far-fetched but plausible theory ever since I played Majora’s Mask for the first time in 2015. You mentioned the mysterious circumstances that caused all the portrait ghosts to die at the same time and my theory is that the mansion is the resting place of everyone who died in a timeline where the moon destroyed Termina. Almost every portrait ghost has a strikingly similar character in MM, a few are the Clockwork Soldiers and the Clocktown Guards, Chauncey and the Goron Elder’s Son, Shivers and the Deku Butler, and Honey and Darling and the Dancing Whirlindas. Some other connections is the music room having the Deku Pipes which is one of the instruments Link plays. It also has the drums and a cello which are similar to the other instruments link plays. Probably the most striking reference is Luigi blowing up the moon. This always seemed so out of place, but it fits so well as a nod to MM. Overall, it’s unlikely that this is the canon story, but I wouldn’t be surprised if devs purposely made close ties considering how close the games were released from each other
I loved the game as a kid and I still do, but I’m kinda sad what they’ve done with the sequels. I haven’t played the second one but am currently playing the third. It’s a good game but it just doesn’t have the same feel. It’s way more casual and not as dark and atmospheric as the first one.
I agree with you on Luigi's mode. Something does feel off about it, and in any other setting I wouldn't like it. But in the context of this game I really feel like it adds to the atmosphere, funny as it may be.
Here's my theory about E. Gadd. He isn't good or evil, he's a morally grey character who's only focus is his research. He says that the Boos are the ones who trapped Mario, but the Boos were all trapped under a trap door, including King Boo, until Luigi accidently frees them. That means the Boos were trapped before Luigi arrived, and were therefore unable to trap Mario in that painting themselves, even if they take credit for it, and King Boo only gets a hold of Mario's painting later. They couldn't send Luigi the letter saying he won the mansion either. But guess who can turn things into paintings, send the letter and do all that ? That's right. E. Gadd. Also, the Boos were trapped within the Portrait Ghosts' mansion, which does imply they are good guys since they're the ones keeping the dangerous Boos trapped. And most of them are just living their lives until we try to catch them. So here's what I think happened : A while ago, E. Gadd caught the Portrait Ghosts, but lately, they managed to escape. They made their mansion reappear, in which King Boo and 50 Boos have been trapped by them before, and they started living their lives again. E. Gadd, wants to recapture them. But he's too old to do it again, so he sends that letter to Luigi in order to trick him into catching the Portrait Ghosts for him. He did not call Mario because Luigi is more naive, and would believe him more easily. Also, since King Boo says Mario caused trouble for him in the past, maybe that Mario is the one who trapped King Boo within the mansion, with the Portrait Ghosts' help (before E. Gadd caught them). So if E. Gadd called him, well it wouldn't work since Mario knows that the Portrait Ghosts aren't evil, and Mario would refuse to help. So E. Gadd sends the "You won a mansion" letter to Luigi instead. The problem is, Mario recognizes the Mansion in which he trapped King Boo in the past, and feeling like it may be a trap, goes there before Luigi. There, he meets E. Gadd, who knowing Mario would get in the way of his plans (and refuses to help him catch the ghosts), pushes him into his machine to turn things into portraits, and decides to use Mario as the excuse to send Luigi catch the ghosts for him when he eventually arrives. But after being freed, King Boo gets his hands on Mario's portrait which E. Gadd left in the mansion. And we can also see that his morality is grey in Sunshine, where he gives the paintbrush to Bowser Jr. and F.L.U.D.D. to the Piantas, basically creating a problem and its solution to test both of his inventions and see how things will turn out to satiate his scientific curiosity. He also does many good things, but he doesn't care whether what he does is good or bad as long as he can test his experiments and his inventions. I find that fascinating. E. Gadd is probably the most morally complex character of all the mainline Mario games. It's true that Nintendo doesn't exactly use that potential though, but that's true for basically all the Mario characters sadly.
Huh. And to think Luigi’s Mansion games are some my favourites for their unique gameplay and of course all the cute Luigi. Weird indeed how times change when it comes to video games XD
This is what Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Dark Moon lacked. No depressing color, no atmosphere of weird ghost noises, dark areas. LM3 feels like a cartoony Beat em up.
Why does Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon have a cool name, but then Luigi’s Mansion 3 is just Luigi’s Mansion 3? Oh yeah and good video, Duo! It was very good and stuff!
First: it may have to do with the fact that Dark Moon was only the name here. In most other places it was just called Luigi's Mansion 2. Second: glad you enjoyed the video! Hopefully you enjoy the next one as well!
I agree, this game really does have a ridiculously impressive game world. It's a shame they never really, like REALLY managed to recapture that feeling in the later games. I mean, I think 3 came pretty close, but there's still something missing there imo
I'll agree with you on that. It feels like the later games are much more focused on creating a "fun game world" than a cohesive environment. That being said I still love the other two, with Luigi's Mansion 3 especially being an absolute joy to play.
My favorite video game of all time with my favorite character ever as the main character, this game is the most epic and most awesome game ever, this game was part of my childhood and it's a masterpiece for me it's just the greatest game I will ever play and it's awesome that Mario is apart of the game and you have to fight and catch every ghost up until Final Boss King Boo, this game is everything and it's so close to my heart, I freaking love and adore this game as much as I love and adore my favorite character ever Luigi.
Somehow I never found this video until 3 years after it was posted, but this is a great review! I share much of the same feelings for this game, i also replay it once a year usually. The first time i played this game I was 5 years old ans MR LUGGS ALSO TERRIFIED ME. I seriously got nightmares from him and some others when i was a kid 😂
I have the same feelings on expectations about if this game was or wasn’t a Mario game only thing was this was my first game experience period my mother played it and I enjoyed watching since my hands were to small to hold a controller
It's simple, it's one of the few Nintendo games that's actually creepy (Super Mario 64? Unsettling, Majora's Mask? Unsettling, Luigi's Mansion? Unsettling).
Interesting question. I actually got pretty far into production on it, but ended up doing Metroid stuff instead. And then, by the time I finally got around to wanting to do Dark Moon, this video had aged in terms of my editing quality. I gotta figure out at this point if I want to redo this video first.
Despite how much I love the haunted house atmosphere and ghost design, there is just something that really bothers me about the whole series. Most of the ghosts don't seem to be aggressive until they're provoked, many of them are just doing their own thing with some just straight up minding their own business (i.e. the ghost catching up on some reason, the pianist, the sleeping little girl, the director, etc.) so why are you busting them!? It makes it seem like Luigi is the aggressor. You can count the number of hostile ghosts in the series on two hands, yet the dozens of others react to the player the same way you would act if you came across a toad in your garden. Hell, even the Boos ain't attacking you, and are actively trying to get away from you. I doubt to many people would like the fate of being stuck in a picture for all eternity, and the HUGE issue of Gadd using the ghosts as slaves in the sequel makes this game series downright questionable! Why is this aspect of the game never really brough up!? I'm probably overthinking this by miles, but I can't get around it! In the first game, Neville is literally just sitting there reading, not bothering the world or his wife! Why do you have to bust him!?! He's not bothering anyone, and the same goes for most of the other ghosts in this series!! It really reminds me of the Bigfoot hunting mission in RDR Undead Nightmare.
My first Mario game was Mario Cart, and my second Mario game was Super Smash Bros, both on the game cube. It's funny because I dislike Mario platformers, the first one I played was for the Wii, I don't even remember the name, but I hated the game play. I would prefer playing Zelda or Sonic games for the most part. I played the 3DS Luigi Mansion when I first came out and I loved it, still haven't been able to get the original because it is hella expensive now and we never got it when I was a kid.
This is my favorite game in the franchise. I really dislike how they went to a more comedic way with this game. Also the long un-skippable cutscenes is really frustrating.
1:29 Nope not to kiddy. Just looked fucking ugly in general. And no i don't hate cel shading optic. Punch out wii for example had an great one. But wind waker? Just looked (and still looks) terrible.
I mean I think most people would disagree considering that's the most praised part of the game nowadays, but opinions are opinions. I'm more of a Twilight Princess guy myself style-wise.
@DuoStuff I know, I simply think it realy don't look good. I don't mind a more cartoony "childish: artstyle just this one rubs me the wrong way. Yeah Tp I also like more personally.
How many kids were afraid of Mr.Cu**? OOPS I mean Mr.Luggs! He was the reason I was too hesitant to play this game as a child! How many of you guys in the comments have had this fear of Mr.Luggs?
DuoStuff Well he sure as Hell made me not want to play that game despite owning it for two years. I was born in 2002. I got the game for my 10th Birthday but I wasn’t able to get the nerve out to play the game until after I turned 12.

Overall, it’s unlikely that this is the canon story, but I wouldn’t be surprised if devs purposely made close ties considering how close the games were released from each other
I wouldn't say it's a likely theory obviously, but at bare minimum the correlation is kinda neat.
I've seen so many youtubers talk about Luigi's Mansion and not a single one uses the ice technique to make catching boos easier.
Wait you can actually do that?
*replays Luigi’s Mansion*
This video is a gem, just like the game.
I loved the game as a kid and I still do, but I’m kinda sad what they’ve done with the sequels. I haven’t played the second one but am currently playing the third. It’s a good game but it just doesn’t have the same feel. It’s way more casual and not as dark and atmospheric as the first one.
A stunning analysis of Luigi's Mansion, but with a distinct lack of stuffed animals.
Glad you enjoyed the video dude. Can't include stuffed dolls though otherwise I'd be copying a classic Luigi's Mansion video. ;)
I agree with you on Luigi's mode. Something does feel off about it, and in any other setting I wouldn't like it. But in the context of this game I really feel like it adds to the atmosphere, funny as it may be.
Ok but like I was scared of Luigi's mansion dark moon for like 4 years, that I would replay the first lvl over and over
2:18 Something I can relate too
Here's my theory about E.
So here's what I think happened :
A while ago, E.
Wait Luigi's Mansion is a spinoff game?I thought it was a mainline Mario game?
Cant believe people ever disliked this game.
Right this game is probably top 2 best Mario game of all time 👻🍂
Why does Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon have a cool name, but then Luigi’s Mansion 3 is just Luigi’s Mansion 3?
That being said I still love the other two, with Luigi's Mansion 3 especially being an absolute joy to play.
luigi's mansion is a creepy game, the sequels tried to be more familiar.
15:30 I get PTSD from Super Mario 64 when I see a piano in a video game
Nice video duo I like it a lot
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you like the other ones as well!
Aww… that game came out before I was born!
noises scare me more than anything else, so my scariest ghosts were Lydia, biff and Nana
i thought mr luggs just sounded silly, but that was just me
I'm the only person in existence that wasn't scared of anything in this game mind you I was a literal child
Mansion Luigi
I played the 3DS version and Dark Moon, and I have to say that these games are so fucking good, another great videogame series. 🤘🏻
7:32 SMASHING!
This game was awesome. I don't know if I'll play it again though. Maybe someday...
You really should, though that's only if you already own it since Gamecube stuff is getting expensive.
@@DuoStuff no kidding. I did get a copy relatively cheap. It was 40 dollars including the box. Now it's anywhere from 50 to 70 dollars.
When a game is a good game. Well, that's the answer: a good game.
I too play this game once a year every year on Spooky Season to be exact😈
If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call?
"Ho-yeah!"
Professor E. Gadd is Mario's Happy Mask Salesman confirmed.
I have the same feelings on expectations about if this game was or wasn’t a Mario game only thing was this was my first game experience period my mother played it and I enjoyed watching since my hands were to small to hold a controller
The baby is described as being born a ghost, because Nintendo.
My first Mario game was the second game Luigi’s mansion dark moon
5:32 Beta screenshot 👀
The Beta is really sweet to be fair.
@DuoStuff I agree! I wasn’t being negative in the comment
Oh don't worry I didn't think you were being negative! I was just talking about the Beta being cool. =D
Unfortunately the other installments failed to keep the eerie atmosphere and everything that makes the original excellent
Tiedwith paper Mario for my favorite series
Great video chief. I wouldn't be surprised to see you get up there with the best of the commentary channels 🤙
It's simple, it's one of the few Nintendo games that's actually creepy (Super Mario 64? Unsettling, Majora's Mask? Unsettling, Luigi's Mansion? Unsettling).
Hey where's the dark moon video?
Interesting question. I actually got pretty far into production on it, but ended up doing Metroid stuff instead. And then, by the time I finally got around to wanting to do Dark Moon, this video had aged in terms of my editing quality. I gotta figure out at this point if I want to redo this video first.
@@DuoStuff okay! Just curious as I am just finding your channel and didn't know if it was made and taken down or something like that
what's wrong with loochi's modellll??? he looks like a slightly refined mario 2-igi
Simply put... the only thing that makes Luigis Mansion special is Luigi
I don't think it's the *ONLY* thing that makes it special, but I think my almost 30 minute video kinda speaks for itself. XD
WARNING Beta game over at 9:00
I'm not sure people really need to be warned about it, but hey, it couldn't hurt I guess.
Too bad E. Gadd never made it in a Mario Party game to play as.
I’m still suprised this game got an E rating. Then again, E 10+ didn’t exist yet.
Wahoo! Luigi board!
Nice pun there! =D
The Ghostbusters begged Luigi to join them!
This is my favorite game in the franchise. I really dislike how they went to a more comedic way with this game. Also the long un-skippable cutscenes is really frustrating.
You should make a discord server :)
I actually do have one. Usually Troy Sideways posts the link in the comments on every video.
he sounds like eric griffin : P
duo kun is back also deku scrub still fucks computers
OMG. XD Anyways I hope you enjoy the video! =D
Hello duo i am a pancake
Pretty impressed you've managed to get to this video despite being a pancake.
Hope you like the video though! =D
@@DuoStuff yea it was a good video keep up the great work
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Put a lot of work into it. =D

Nope not to kiddy.
I'm not sure if there are many others or not. All I know is that he scared the shit out of my friend MJ and I. XD
DuoStuff Well he sure as Hell made me not want to play that game despite owning it for two years. I was born in 2002. I got the game for my 10th Birthday but I wasn’t able to get the nerve out to play the game until after I turned 12.
@@zacharypayne9619 We kept chugging through despite how much he scared us. We just didn't interrupt his eating after the first time.
Except dark moon and the third are trash
