I agree. The Allen sisters sold their shares in the Hall & Oates catalog years ago with little fanfare. Plus Oates share is at best one-third. So I can only assume Oates is right that Daryl doesn’t approve of the publishing company not necessarily selling off his share.
I bet they had some GAY moments that are really 'haunting' them. Anytime there is this 'wierd' energy with a broke-up band, i.e. Queenryche, my mind always goes there... like something happened that you can't come back from.
Then he should sell HIS solo catalog - how on earth can you sell off half of a duo w/o it screwing over the other party. IF John sells off his half, he's also selling off Darryl's half, i.e.: his image, his voice & his writing. That's just ridiculous. He should have asked Darryl to buy him out and then he's sole owner of his image too - John willing sells his to him.
Brothers fight…but the love is always there. If they are not happy working together then don’t do it. They have made some Amazing music together and that will never be taken away. Wish them both good luck.
The issue with John selling his half meant that Primary Wave, who he was selling it to,could then use their music,videos,etc.. for anything. Darryl Hall’s voice and image could be used for things he doesn’t agree with, and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. John Oates mentioned legal wrangling before he decided to sell, but there was no lawsuit until he attempted to sell his half. He called Darryl and told him he was going to do it,Darryl explained why he couldn’t allow it,and they argued. Both told that story before the lawsuit.

Hall has always been the lead singer and I don’t remember any of the hits with Oates singing lead on anything but I do know he knew how to play the heck out of that guitar. Their sound is obviously the result of their combined creativity because there is a reason why Hall never went solo. I hope they can work it out. They are definitely a huge part of the soundtrack of the 80s.
**I hate when people play stupid. A phone call could have eliminated all of this.** “Hey, I’m interested in selling my half…based on the offers I receive, would you be interested in buying them so you’ll have total rights?” THE END!
You're dealing with celebrities who have the EQ of a 4 year old. How do I know? I was in the biz for 20 years and I saw it all and once in a while I was one of those 4 year olds.
So you thing Daryl has that much lose cash on hand to buy out his partner? Don’t think so. You ASSume too much. John has every right to sell, at a fair market value, his share of the business to anyone with the $$$$.
Hearing this is so sad. I remembered first hearing Hall & Oats song from a video game I used to play a lot as a teenager, and still do into my adult' years.
You know the world 🌎 needs help when Hall & Oates break up. I love their music and hopefully they will mend their music relationship but go on to enjoy the rest of their lives strife free.
Do you pray to Jesus or cut out the middle man? Do you have to have your eyes closed? is it out loud, move you lips? tongues, does that get you a higher priority thread? what if he/she is busy working a field goal? can the devil hear you? Do I have to live with my X in heaven? Is the music better in hell? Do you have to kiss God's butt? these are some of the questions that kept me out of the really good schools...
Amen. That's exactly what I was wondering. Perhaps, he did and Daryl couldn't give him what he wanted. It's disappointing that they aren't close... and probably never really were.
@@Porkcylinder Thanks. Of course. No doubt about that. I was just wondering, you know, to see how the relationship is/was. I think it's a very interesting question, apart from whether Oates is entitled to sell it to whoever he wants. Oates is I think.
It only matters if Darryl can afford to buy oates's half. What if someone offered oates more money? Would you sell your half of something you own to the top bidder? I would.
I'm not a lawyer, but I'm not sure he's required to do that. If I own a large number of shares in a company, I'm able to sell them to anyone I want. In fact, this kind of thing happens daily, where hedge funds and billionaires sell off their part of ownership in a company, without consulting anyone else. But I'm not sure how the law applies to the "corporation" that is Hall & Oates.
You can't take Hall out of Hall and Oats anymore than you can take Oats out of Hall and Oats. That part of the meal has been already been baked. Future revenues, brands, likeness, etc. So I would contend you can't sell off the jointly held assets without both parties being in agreement. They have to agree to share the proceeds of the sale of the assets, not the worth of the business, to which they both still participate. I am no lawyer, just play one on TV
@@abebrock5559 we don't know the nature of their agreement. My wife and I jointly own a home. If we divorced, she would have the option of buying my half or agreeing to split the proceeds of a sale. She cannot force me to own half of a house forever.
This is definitely more complicated than selling half of a catalog. The new partner would have access to their likeness, videos, and their legacy. New technology makes them vulnerable.
Millions of people pursue music and never get as lucky as these two have been together and they are throwing this gift to the world, and their relationship away...just brillant! Grow up boys!
A partnership in music is just like a marriage, not all marriages survive. That's just part of of life. If you don't feel comfortable with echother anymore you go seperate ways. I had a great friend, we knew each other over 20 years but we drifeted apart.last couple of years of our friendship. Wanted different things out of life. Should we stay friends just because we have that past? Hell no! We are both much happier now actually, living our own lives.
This is sad, but the music industry can be a stressful nasty business and can get in the way of the creative joyous side. They put out some wonderful music together that will be treasured for a long long time. Best wishes to both John and Daryl.
It is unfortunate that these former partners are in conflict. Oates was not clear at all about the reason for selling - what situation, what legal wranglings that got complex? Michael missed getting clarity on this. Then Oates later says they had no other issues prior to this. Something’s missing. I would definitely want to hear the other side.
I was thinking the same thing. Oates was very vague which kinda tells me he’s not totally in the right. The main thing I want to know is did he talk with Daryl first before he tired to sell. Because I’m getting betrayal as a factor in this scenario
I think the reason why Oates is vague about certain things is because it's still a legal dispute in progress, and Hall's lawyers can use anything specific Oates says against him or simply to make him look bad in the eyes of a judge.
Wow!! I grew up as a kid in the 80s listening to Hall & Oates with my big brother, who has since passed away. It was and is some of my best memories with my brother. I hope Hall & Oats can reconcile .

Something smells a bit off. For him to make such a big move without even mentioning it to his partner, suggests a bit more turmoil under the surface than just a sterile business relationship.
"I had the right to do that" sounds to me that John didn't give Daryl the heads up about wanting to sell his portion of their music rights. I could see how Daryl might want to present and have input about his future roommate.
It always sounds like he didn't offer Daryl the 1/2 that he was wanting to sell. That is an attack on Daryl. REminds me of MIchael Jackson getting Paul McCartney to write and perform with him all the while buying the Beatle's catalog out from under him.
Daryl was not consulted about the business they both own. That there is where the root of the problem is. John literally backstabbed Daryl. I hope he gets him good in court!
@@1250GSX Yes McCartney was tring to buy the catalog...he was working on sucuring the funds. Jackson knew it and made sure his people kept it a secret he was after it. He even brought McCartney in to work on a song to keep him occupied. He never mentioned what he was doing. It was very calculated on Jackson's part...and a savage move too. Paul never talked to him after that.

Well, we as fans will forever cherish the music that you gentlemen released over the years. The only unfortunate thing about this is that I missed out on my opportunity to see you guys live. But it's amazing that we see the great chemistry that these two have and for years, they weren't as close as we thought they were. It's said that it has come to this but being that they're in their mid to late 70's and spent over 50 years performing together, I don't blame them for calling it quits. Thank you for all the music and I wish you both success in life and with your solo careers!
John & Daryl were great together ..... both obviously are competent WRITERS, SINGERS & MUSICIANS ..... John is good at all three ....... Daryl is great at them. His voice alone is unbelievable - just perfect for any song by anyone. RARE to say the least.
I’m happy that John provided clarity on their battle with one another. From what he voiced it sounds like they both want different things with their musical careers and it’s nothing wrong with that. I can respect that. I just hope that they can get through this being at least cordial with one another.
John provided semi•clarity and it was from his perspective. In addition he was kinda of vague on the details. Like the real reason why he was selling his half, who he was selling his half to and did he talk with Daryl before he attempted to sell his half. Plus, I want to hear Daryl’s side. Not from court papers but from Daryl’s own lips.
I'm on Oates side. It sounds like Hall was preventing Oates from performing certain songs solo on the road. Oates got frustrated and try to sell to gets Hall attention. I always felt Hall was controlling and putting Oates in the back seat.
@@waynedexter yes, same old tunes. Oats is a beast singing his new album. I am more on oats side as a singer and musician. But who am I to tell you anything, right?

It's money, yeah, but more so ownership of the rights to the music. Music that was created and owned "equally." As posted elsewhere, it's like deciding who gets custody of the dog. It's all or nothing.
I am sure scores of groups did not get along - many LONG before the existance of S&G. It's just that certain groups or genres get the attention - like The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Temptations, Sam & Dave, The Supremes, The Byrds, etc.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I had no idea this is the way they worked. As a young girl in the 70 & 80's this my band. I love their music. 😢 So so sad.
You’d think that at their age, Hall would just tell the lawyers, let’s resolve this fairly and equitably and with love and mutual respect, and then toast to having been together 50 years and wish each other the best. But instead there’s ego-driven pettiness and unhappiness. Wild. Mo’ money, mo’ problems.
Something tells me there's more to the story than either will reveal. I think it was really telling that John Oates said that for the last 20 years or so, they would just show up and play the concerts and then go their separate ways. Things may have built up between them to the point that they no longer spoke to each other, and now there's a lawsuit.
@QuirkyGirl10 I thought so myself. I remember somebody told me 20 years ago, Hall and Oates didn't get along in real life, but enjoy making music together. Even the show Behind the Music from 25 years ago, I believe John explained they were never that closed to begin with. Daryl wouldn't admit that. He mentioned they got along real great and enjoying being together. I think the problem with those two, they couldn't come in terms of agreement. I believed Daryl accepted John more than John accepted him. The main issue is, Daryl has a huge ego problem and he probably didn't know it was affecting his relationship with John. John on the hand, was trying to get out of Daryl's shadow for a long time but couldn't. I think John don't get along with Daryl on the persona level and Daryl don't get along with John on the business side of things. That's what I'm reading about their relationship.
@DK-455 The only thing Daryl got average over on John was that he had better writing lyrics and vocal. John was better at working instrumental and producing. Sure, John had a hand of writing some songs, but it wasn't that catchy like Daryl.
God bless him and God bless dad. 100. Just looking at the photos of his young dad is inspirational. Keeping on doing what you do Mr. Oates. And Iove what Daryl is doing right now but he needs to let go of any animosity he has towards John. Two great talents that have so much more to give.
Love the editing of this, lo! 2:28 - Daryl couldn't go for that 🤷🏻♂ 2:48 - They just played concerts and we're really "in touch". 😅 3:09 - They show up for a show, and go on their "private" lives.
I'm mainly a Daryl Hall fan but John Oates does a really nice job on some of their songs as the main vocalist: Had I known you better then, and then fast forward to Time won't pass me by, and also for a different style of singing The Christmas Song /Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, off their inspired Home for Christmas album (maybe they should listen again to the lyrics from the adult contemporary number one they had from it.. It’s not the same thing. You can’t sell half a house, but you can sell half interest in other types of assets, and that includes films, movies, and music.
@@jaredjlinden evidently they had some agreement early on that one cannot sell without the others agreement or approval. And even with no agreement it would go to court and a judge would have to decide if one could sell 50% of partnership which could override the other partner.
If there’s an agreement that one partner has veto power over the sale to a third party, then Hall’s actions make sense. If there’s no clause in the partnership agreement, then Hall isn’t going to have much of a chance in court - legally Oates can sell without Hall’s approval. That’s the default without that clause.
@@jaredjlindenI'm guessing that there must be some clause in the partnership agreement preventing such a sale without the other's consent. Otherwise, a court would not have granted Hall's injunction.
I’ve seen divorcing couples sell a house and split the proceeds. Once it becomes legal, who can tell. This musical split is sad but Hall always seemed to be the face (and voice) of the group. I wish the two the best of luck.

John Oates has a beautiful voice. He is every bit as talented as Daryl Hall. I love them both.
This interview screams "there is WAY more going on"
I agree. The Allen sisters sold their shares in the Hall & Oates catalog years ago with little fanfare. Plus Oates share is at best one-third. So I can only assume Oates is right that Daryl doesn’t approve of the publishing company not necessarily selling off his share.
Ok…love em like a brother made me ok….I am ok.
I bet they had some GAY moments that are really 'haunting' them. Anytime there is this 'wierd' energy with a broke-up band, i.e. Queenryche, my mind always goes there... like something happened that you can't come back from.
@@Jgeneraledger23 I don't work very hard to conjure up thoughts of them having sex together. Probably just me
Yup, he could have gave Hall first right of refusal.
Glad John Oats is going on his own with new music. Hoping they are both happy. Life’s too short.
His "new music" is weak - and a sure cure for insomnia! 😪😴
Oates went to my high school and they played in our gym. Good times right around Sarah Smile. My older sister knew him. Come on guys.
Thanks for sharing friend. I'm sure your good wishes will make a difference if only a small one.
Thanks for Sharing!!!
Brothers fight…but the love is always there. If they are not happy working together then don’t do it. They have made some Amazing music together and that will never be taken away. Wish them both good luck.
They're not brothers, qhy do you insist calling them that when they don't even look at one another thusly?
The issue with John selling his half meant that Primary Wave, who he was selling it to,could then use their music,videos,etc.. for anything. Darryl Hall’s voice and image could be used for things he doesn’t agree with, and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. John Oates mentioned legal wrangling before he decided to sell, but there was no lawsuit until he attempted to sell his half. He called Darryl and told him he was going to do it,Darryl explained why he couldn’t allow it,and they argued. Both told that story before the lawsuit.
💯 agree with Darryl’s decision….
if Oates was being 100% benign, he would have offered Hall first dibs to buy HIS OWN SHIT BACK. bad plastic surgery as well
@@toddabbruzzese3974 haha damn.... todd is a perceptive dude. I mean, you're right. Exactly. John wants to make even more millions off of Darryl's voice, which is primarily what he's done for 50+ years.

A phone call could have eliminated all of this.**
“Hey, I’m interested in selling my half…based on the offers I receive, would you be interested in buying them so you’ll have total rights?” THE END!
It seemed like John had been trying but had given up. Daryl is not the easiest person to deal with.
@@brownin329 When did John Oates say that? When did he offer Daryl Hall his half?
You're dealing with celebrities who have the EQ of a 4 year old. How do I know? I was in the biz for 20 years and I saw it all and once in a while I was one of those 4 year olds.
Even with Daryl being wealthy that half would be way beyond his means. The fool in your name is worthy of being there.
So you thing Daryl has that much lose cash on hand to buy out his partner? Don’t think so. You ASSume too much. John has every right to sell, at a fair market value, his share of the business to anyone with the $$$$.

For me, there's only one relevant question here:"Did Oates offer his share to Hall first?".
Amen. That's exactly what I was wondering. Perhaps, he did and Daryl couldn't give him what he wanted. It's disappointing that they aren't close... and probably never really were.
Agree 100%. He owed it to Hall to at least offer his shares. Whether he did and Hall turned him down, for whatever reason, we may never know.
He’s perfectly entitled so sell to whoever he sees fit and without consultation
@@Porkcylinder Thanks.
Of course. No doubt about that. I was just wondering, you know, to see how the relationship is/was. I think it's a very interesting question, apart from whether Oates is entitled to sell it to whoever he wants. Oates is I think.
It only matters if Darryl can afford to buy oates's half. What if someone offered oates more money? Would you sell your half of something you own to the top bidder? I would.
The 80's wasn't just a decade, it all was an emotion.
He has an amazing voice. Good for him!
Saw these guys at a concert back in 1985, they're music was so amazing!
I think it would be a basic courtesy to consult Hall about who the preferred buyer would/could be.
*"THAT PART"*

It's very sad that their feuding together, but I always listened to Hall and Oates every day.
This is definitely more complicated than selling half of a catalog. The new partner would have access to their likeness, videos, and their legacy. New technology makes them vulnerable.

He said it was becoming a burden legally that's enough for me, burdens are a downer😘
I was thinking the same thing. Oates was very vague which kinda tells me he’s not totally in the right. The main thing I want to know is did he talk with Daryl first before he tired to sell. Because I’m getting betrayal as a factor in this scenario
@@waynedexter My thoughts exactly. It's like a partner selling their half of a business to someone the other partner never agreed to.
I think the reason why Oates is vague about certain things is because it's still a legal dispute in progress, and Hall's lawyers can use anything specific Oates says against him or simply to make him look bad in the eyes of a judge.

Darryl should've bought John's half of the catalog, situation solved.
@@raythackston1960 Kind of reminded me of that too however the beatles catalogue was on the open market and McCartney was not one of the bidders.

He seems like a whole new musician. Maybe Hall wants it to just play the old songs and the same rhythm.
@@laurenmay2098Hall just released new music so it ain’t that

@@QuirkyGirl10 You’re right and I also think Hall wrote most of the hits and doesn’t think Oats is entitled to half.
I think Darryl feels he did most of the songwriting and all the lead vocals and John isn't entitled to half. I tend to agree.
@DK-455 The only thing Daryl got average over on John was that he had better writing lyrics and vocal. John was better at working instrumental and producing. Sure, John had a hand of writing some songs, but it wasn't that catchy like Daryl.
