Great interview. Daryl is his own man - whether one agrees with him or not, he has his life going the way he likes. He's a brilliant musician, songwriter and vocalist. I have enormous respect for him and the music that he has given us, with or without Mr. Oates. I hope we have many more years to enjoy this great music artist. Thanks Bill.
I feel like it was much more important for Daryl personally to draw this huge incandescent line between him and Oates during the interview than it was for us to hear it.
The thing I admire about Daryl Hall is that his hits have withstood the test of time. Songs like "I Can't Go For That" and "Sara Smile" still sound as fresh today as they did from my car radio back in the day. I never would have guessed that as they were straight up pop and most all pop has a very short shelf life.
I was a travel agent for Hall & Oates (I worked for a small travel agency in Forest Hills, Queens NY that specialized in travel arrangements for bands including The Rolling Stones, Supertramp, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, The Allman Bros. Band and of course, Hall & Oates. I loved Daryl - he was so gorgeous and talented. I got to meet them and went to a few of their concerts for free - one of the perks of working at the travel agency. Plus we always got advance free copies of their latest albums.
My band opened 60 shows for Hall & Oates in ‘77 and ‘78. It was during their comparatively commercially lean period of ‘Beauty On A Back Street’ and ‘Along The Red Ledge’ albums. I used to watch them from sidestage, night after night, as Daryl would never sing a song the same way two nights in a row. He is a true soul singer of the highest order, black or white. All Daryl said here was that he and John are now just business partners, in the H&O brand. It’s a touring brand only at this point, and it pays bills for both of them. They’re not creative partners in the songwriting/arranging/recording/producing sense. It wasn’t mean. It was just the facts. Having said that, Daryl is rather aloof and he does have an ego, and there’s nothing wrong in that. I’ve yet to meet many highly successful people who aren’t that way. It’s more than often part of the equation that makes them so great to begin with. I must add that John was a very friendly and accommodating touring partner. Good guy. Daryl is very private.
Hey, thanks AWESOME reply. I MISS the good old days. I think it was their only album that had a bit more of a ROCK approach, with of course that sweet, smooth Philly sound as well. Be well, Peace.
Very cool! I saw them in the mid 70's just as Sara Smile was breaking. I had been a fan for almost a year at that point. The first H&O album I bought was Abandoned Luncheonette, I immediately went out and bought Whole Oats. They were different and special, I told everyone about them. That mid 70's concert was on Long Island, my GF and future wife wasn't too familiar with H&O and she wasn't feeling too great (her period), anyway, within 20 minutes she forgot about her headache and pain, it was better than any Midol pill, LOL! When Daryl was singing Sara Smile he sat at the edge of the stage and he had that entire audience in the palm of his hand, it was a terrific concert! You were very fortunate to have played on the same billing with them.
You guys opened for them during their greatest creative period. Their biggest hits were ahead of them, but they were writing better overall material in the late '70's.
I agree he is a wonderful man. As a kid I somehow found myself backstage at a huge show in Ohio because of my fathers association with the promoter. I saw a little argument with him and one of the guys from AWB. I think he was the leader not sure but it began harsh but two level headed men were able to stifle it before it got nasty. Maurice White from EWF and Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner from the Ohio Players. Had nothing to do with anything musical but back in the mid 70s people seemed to be less arrogant and more willing to let things go. They just dont make men like this anymore. Great post, loved reading it.
Wow!!! I have been such a fan of Hall & Oates since I was 13/14 years old. What a great interview. Two men conversing about music. I can listen for hours.
Joe Walsh, Diane Birch, Pat Monahan, Todd Rundgren, Shelby Lynne, Amos Lee, Mutlu Onaral, Kandace Springs, Rumer, Tommy Shaw, Smokey, Brett Dennen, Minus the Bear, Dirty Heads, Jimmy Wayne, Rob Thomas, Jason Mraz, Ty Taylor, Finger Eleven, Butch Walker, ALLEN STONE, Wyclef Jean, Aaron Neville, Kenny Loggins
Nice job, Bill - this is easily the best interview with Daryl Hall that I have ever seen or heard. Very relaxed...and everyone is more open and revealing when they are relaxed.
Daryl, I am so glad you took the time to interview! Bill , great job! Daryl you are such an artist, I’m sure fame chases you into privacy and you do not have the time to explain your creativity! Or even want to! Thanks for sharing with Bill about your creativity, and take on life!
They make such a great point about the human voice- and Daryl's voice is one that has held up remarkably well over time. He still sounds great and can hit the mark...
Hall and Oates fan. Interesting that DH talks about how he did most of the studio work on some of the hits with his "business partner" . But his solo recording career garnered basically one hit song.
I worked in Hollywood for a bank, a filing job. One of my many co-workers was a cute woman named Jena. One day she brought in an album (that I had heard of, as it was reviewed in Rolling Stone) called Abandoned Luncheonette. She quit after a few weeks. Later, I realized she was Sara ( Sara Smile ) Allen's younger sister.
I'm 22 but I've really come across his music over the past year or two, especially live stuff, this guy is insane, a real musician and vocalist... Great to see him sit down in an interview quite recent, like gold dust... hope he does something like this again
For those of you, who like I, cannot stand to hear Maher’s voice any more than is necessary, the comments Daryl makes about his relationship with John Oates is at about 12:45 in.
So as someone who has probably heard 95% or more of Daryl's interviews, I think I can add some perspective to what might appear to be him discrediting John here. First, Maher needed to be more specific when asking about things in terms of time, like Daryl said at the end " Oh you're talking about the OLD days"....What we need to realize is that it has been almost 40 years since Daryl and John actually sat in a room with guitars/piano and wrote a song together. It may not feel that way to us because we still love the music like it was written yesterday, but for Daryl, that was 2 or maybe 3 lifetimes ago. Think of it like a marriage and the songs were the kids ( Daryl has used this analogy before). They got married, had all these kids, grew apart, but still care for each other and have to still remain " together" to help keep the kids safe, taken care of ect.....So there is that part The real issue here, and what I hear in many of Daryl's interviews, is a confusion/anger that he was never taken seriously as a solo artist, and least not in the way he wanted. Just look at what he has witnessed. Michael Jackson, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Sting, George Michael, Jon Bon Jovi, Rob Thomas, and more, all split from their original groups and found, in some cases, more success solo than with the original groups. So from Daryl's POV, he must be like WTF? Why did I get so ignored? To the point that his best album, IMO, Can't Stop Dreaming, was basically ignored until it was re-released AFTER Hall & Oates were back together with Do It For Love. Only THEN was that album even recognized, and it did spur a few AC/Jazz hits...So I 100% forgive his hurt, and he is clearly hurt, that when he tried to go solo he was never really given the time of day or promoted properly, and only after each time he would go running back to John, did he have success. He is human, and that would wear on any of us. Lastly, some of what you see here is memory loss. Daryl has never had a good memory because he is always in the now. I have NEVER , and I have seen at least 30 in person, I have NEVER seen a H&O show where he did not screw up the lyrics at least once, you just come to expect it lol. Also, many times his stories are different or confusing from one interview to the next. I have heard him say that Jon Bon Jovi did an excellent job on So Close, and I have also heard him say he ruined the song. Yes, we all know that he was divorced before his ex wife died, but you can tell by the look in his eyes that he still loved her, and most likely their parting was similar to how he parted with Sarah, who said " I know he still loves me, but he just can't be with me" or something close to that. You can tell by the way he speaks about Tommy, Clive and others that he feels cheated somehow, that he feels he should have been able to have equal success solo as he did with H&O. And really , who can blame him? Just listen to any of Soul Alone or Can't Stop Dreaming and you wonder how in the HELL did these albums flop and not produce hits? It seems it was all political and business related, and not really related to the music. Labels wanted so badly to protect the H&O brand that they ignored Daryl. He even said once "we work together because the world forces us to". If you watch enough of his interviews you realize he has some deep wounds, and a love/hate relationship with almost every MALE he interacts with ( a few exceptions) and speaks very fondly and lovingly about all of the women in his life. I think John knows him, and will just take this interview as Daryl being Daryl. Anyway, just my two cents.
@Flying Fluffy Hockey Being a huge fan of Hall & Oates, I totally agree with everything you said. "Can't Stop Dreaming," IMO, was his best solo album, which he recorded in Japan. It wasn't released in the US until later, so my husband had to order it from Japan. Watched them so many times, even in smaller venues around Southern California. The last count was 25 times. I will never tire of watching them live, even with the same setlist. 🧡🙂
What is Daryl talking about that he and John don't have a "creative partnership"? Nevermind all the songs that they wrote *together* -- "She's Gone", "Out of Touch", etc. -- it was fairly common knowledge that they would help each other arrange and shape the songs that they wrote separately. And they produced all of their 80s albums together. If that's not a creative partnership, then wtf is?
@@rewindh462- That's fine you want to stay on your own path but completely rewriting history in such a narcissistic way is something I wouldn't have expected from him. I will point out that Daryl only has a big hit outside of H&O so John sure did something worthwhile in the group. It is sad though. Too bad the pandemic wrecked that potential last studio album that will never happen now.
Unbelievable give oates some credits he wrote a lot of the songs as well. What an ego it was all me. Come on darryl He was your partner in music. Both of you are great.
@@michaelmcdermott9008 I saw an interview with John just a few weeks ago and the lady asked “who is the more sensitive one, which one of you is the one who cries” John said, “oh that’s an answer for a few weeks, there’s going to be allot of crying”.. makes you wonder what happened for sure.
Yea I’m not a particular fan of them but obviously know their hits. I thought he came across a bit arrogant and petty when describing their relative musical contributions. A bit cringy for me
Daryl has reason to be a little bitter, "Hall and Oates" is like a brand that he can't afford to lose, but Daryl has always been "the producer" of the two, and it's not even close. Billy Joel and Elton John don't have to share credit with someone like he does.
Sarah Smile is one of my songs I can relive the memory of the 1st time I heard it; where I was at, who I was with, what I was doing, even what I was wearing and I said “oh WoW! Turn that Up”
So...i have always been a fan so it was a thrill to have the opportunity to work with John setting up co writing sessions in Nashville, John co wrote If a Promise Ain't Enough with 2 members of Little Texas. That song had a huge impact on their careers. D was not in the room. If JO wrote more with the A team writers, he would have many more hits.
Have Loved Daryl Hall and his music for decades. What a talent. I visited Daryl's House in Pawling, NY this past Saturday to watch a friend of mine perform. It's a great venue to watch performers play Live. Great sound system and the food was fantastic. They have an excellent chef and staff. Great experience all around.
Sacred Songs & Abandoned Luncheonette are some of my favourite 70s album and Darryl Hall is probably one of the best pop male vocalists of his generation. More legendary musicians on the show please!
Very good atmosphere in this interview, I like to listen to Daryl talking about life, also like to know that he is a man to listen and speak with reason. 👏👏👏
Daryl is truly a musical genius but his soul is what makes him who he is and that's why we all love him. And y'all both are too cool for school just like every other guests on this club cast. I look forward for the next extraordinary guest.
Wow. perfect "club random" guest!! I have not heard (or thought) about Daryl Hall in decades. Super talented guy, but sounds like he's suffering from bitterness about John. FUN FACT: My mom went to high school with John Oates.
Disappointing that Daryl comes off as being so arrogant. John Oates praises him in his book but Daryl Hall seems to be brushing him off as if he had nothing to do with Daryl‘s career
@@cathy1520 totally agree....it's annoying. His ego is huge & I think he needs people around telling him how great he is. I love the music, not so much the man anymore.
I've watched several interviews with Daryl Hall & still don't understand the "attitude" towards John Oats. Nothing he says about his relationship (or non-relationship) with John makes sense to me.
@@Litlj-xt4gw I agree very sad and confusing. I hate to think it's nothing but ego. If I wouldn't have heard him say it and the tone in his voice, I wouldn't have believed it.
Interesting how Daryl doesn't talk about the songs John wrote which were some of their big hits as well. I appreciate both of them for their music and wish them the best.
Was looking for this comment - business partners? C’mon. Oates has a hell of a lot of talent and contributed heavily to some of their greatest hits. I’d argue his voice is just as good if not better than Daryl’s.
Darryl is an amazing artist and one of the best vocalists of his generation. And he still Has it! He epitomizes the Philly Sound. One of my favorite tunes is Darryl and John performing the Billy Paul classic “Me and Mrs Jones” live! Unbelievable! only thing better than listening to it is watching the live performance. It doesn’t get any better. 😎
That went badly, when; his wife died, concert sizes, the other guy , weed, drinks , so many times , Bill loves his music but it didn’t go well the chat
Daryl is a genius, but he should be kinder to John. Sure, Daryl is the ‘leader’, and it’s main reason for success, but you cannot ignore John’s contributions to songs such as You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. To be known as the greatest pop duo in history isn’t such a bad thing. Daryl had his shot with his solo stuff, and while Dreamtime is a great record, it didn’t hit, and it rankles Daryl, but Ce La Vie. Sometimes life isn’t fair, but be grateful for what you have and not what you could’ve had. PS: listen to their criminally underrated record ‘Change Of Season’. I think it’s their best.
I never knew he lost his wife ✨ then came Sara and her sister into his life around 1974 or so I’m guessing ❤️⭐️ DH has always been right at the top for me with Sinatra and Elvis ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I started listening to Darrl in the 80's. Loved the music, but never knew anything about what he was like, as a person. It's so nice to see that he is just a down to earth person.
" Adult Education " is not only an unforgivably catchy tune ,but also a comforting song for every shy, unpopular girl in High School who fears her brand in high school will be her brad for life .There life after high school. GOLD !!
I could never quite pin down what the message is exactly. But yeah, that is classic funk / Rock with a bluesy flavor and some electro hip hop thrown in just because ....
Great interview and I’m a big fan of Hall & Oates but a bit shocked by Daryl’s attitude about John Oates . I think that Daryl could have been a bit more humble than coming across like this .
Daryl is so full of his self he makes me sick. He wouldn't be where he is today without John Oates. He's jealous, he's selfish, and has and ego the size as his big head. His wife divorced him after a short marriage and either drowned or OD in a bath tub. He had all those musicians on his Live from Daryl's house then turned around and got ton's of money for those shows. Did he pay any of those musicians for their appearance.???? He may be a perfect recipient of a true narcissist I have ever saw. That is why he is alone. He will be alone the rest of his life. He didn't talk about his son because he could be jealous of his own son that he abandoned. A fan of Oats and Hall not Daryl Hall who is a poor excuse for A human being.
08:27 I like how Bill completely defeats his argument that smoking and drinking ruins your voice and then says he likes older Frank's voice , a life time of drinking and smoking, better.
Thank you so much bill for doing this random with Daryl he's amazing long story short I'm 57 and kinda a late bloomer I've listened to music all my life you could say I'm hinged on it laugh cry remember it does it all for me the thing I missed coming up was knowing the artist for years the song was all I heard them one night at my table enjoying a few ok 😏a lot of cocktails I found Daryl's house it opened up a whole new world to me the music and the artist what a setting and Daryl he is so way way beyond talent wise then I ever knew so to Daryl thanks so much for bringing everything full circle to me love your pod cast bill again thank you
Loved it, one of the best episodes hands down. Bill is such a diverse human, to be able to take conversation to equal depth with a football player and a Rockstar is a talent.
Great episode! I’m Bill’s age, and what attracted me to him, was his unwavering ability to call everyone out equally, on their bullshit. The people who have a hard time with him, are the ones that he calls out.
Agreed. I wonder what exactly Daryl meant by him and John are separate. I'm just speculating but possible he means who owns the creative rights to the songs, band naming rights etc. I thought it was a harsh thing to say. It sounded like a real sore spot for Daryl but Bill didn't press him on it. I wish he would have asked him more as bout what he meant.
Soundtracks fill my bored mind at work. And songs that I know are triggered by a sound, a vice, an anything. At 53 years of age, the lyrics of my youth are suddenly deeply meaningful.
There is always something to learn in Bill Maher's Club Random! I just finished the synopsis on the book, " Wet Panties." My urban vocabulary is expanding!
My research is always thorough. My goodness! There is more than just a book. Its a whole world out there. For those interested, Etsy is selling worn wet panties as souvenirs. Looks like a very popular item for men. Hurry, limited stock.
What a great conversation. I started this knowing it was 55 min. I hit the like button and couldn't stop watching until it was over. I love Daryl and Bill. So great!
Growing up listening to Benny Goodman sounds amazing to me. The 20th century is notable, and will eventually be an historical landmark, insanely rich and varied in the development of music, with the advent of recording to the ubiquitous availability we now have.... Music is life
I don’t know how I’ve just found these but, Bill, I’ve been an admirer for years man. And lemme tell ya, it wasn’t easy. Living in the northwest corner of southeast Oklahoma… Being raised between Baptist and Pentecostal backgrounds. I’ll say again, I had a hard time trying to sneak around and watch your shows. But I did. And I had an awakening at around 14-15 y/o. I’m a non believer, or an atheist or agnostic at very least. Anyways. You’re the future of late night stuff that we can all enjoy anytime. Thank you thank you for all of your fucking arguing with all of these great people, and never shutting up. ❤
I Love this and I Love Daryl Hall and am a Diehard fan of his since 1980! Love these intimate interviews with him. I Love All of his songs!!!!!!!! He is The Best Musician in my opinion!!!!!!!
I've been a fan of Hall & Oates since '79. This is the first time I've seen a true interview/ conversation with Daryl. It was interesting that in the beginning, Daryl barely looked at Bill! But I guess after "warming up" with a few drinks, he got more comfortable and seemed to really be enjoying himself. Thanks for another great show, Bill! Cheers!
This made me check out Romeo is Bleeding. Great song. Great guitar work. Not sure why Daryl shits on John so much though. Your in your 70's, you've been together for 50 plus years and still sell out tours. Have the most fun and love that you can in your last years.
Daryl Hall...amazing voice with so much soul...his solo work is sooo much better than the more commercial H&O stuff. Listen to Cab Driver for a masterclass in soulful bliss. His collaborations on Daryl's House are all so perfect and satisfying. What a cool dude.
Two people who shouldn’t even be on the same country (let alone the same room). I couldn’t turn my head away from it. This interview had it all. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
I remember seeing Hall and Oates in 82, they put on a great show, Hall can really bring it in concert, Oates was great also. As a fan thats all I care about.
Big H+O fan. H is a difficult interview. Maher handled it poorly. Didn't do his homework, focused on a meaningless short term marriage and didn't know his wife died. Had him defending his culture/religion (complete incorrect assessment on Methodism). H likes talking about his restoration projects, Philly music history (not Sinatra) and how he made records. Maher put words in his mouth about John and triggered him say things he is probably regretting. He didn't want to discuss Clive but got pushed and basically said I know Clive better than you and he is an a*hole. Maher finally played an ace card and complimented a newer song (but went overboard and claimed he listened to it all the time). I like some of Maher's commentary on his show, but he is a bad interviewer. It is a gimmicky setup, and I assume a tactic is to get people sloshed to reveal things. I couldn't tell if Maher was deliberately trying to pis* him off to get answers. Those methods can't last long term. I don't plan on watching anymore, with him getting high and rambling like a 16 yr old. I really wanted to learn something about one of the most fascinating artists, who set the tone for 80s pop. Missed opportunity (no pun).
@@jimstevenson424 I see Bill's show as anti-show; I think he intends it, like the name of the show, to be free flowing, more conversational, rather than a traditional interview show.
Too often am I compelled to stop viewing for the same reason. It is sad as the guests are often very interesting people. The same occurs with "Real Time".
I understand your point when it comes the the panel on Real Time. However, this podcast is more like the interview at beginning of the show, and it’s fun seeing Bill talk to famous people or politicians. He always asks the big questions, and always gives those guests a lot of time to speak. This podcast is like that.
@@johnrwalker53 Not "wrong" just a different opinion than yours. I know that he has but some of his collaborations and non Hall and Oates in the last 20 years are better IMO.

Great conversation. It's fascinating what a asterisk Daryl puts on John Oates. Allot of damn water under that bridge. Thats life though. Its complicated.
Daryl Hall still looks great and is very smart. He is highly educated ..attended Temple University and has devoted his life to music. While other Artists got involved in the drug booze scene he had the brains to keep on making good music while keeping his feet on the ground. Seems to me that he is a product of his environment..good family with sensible values. I think he is the greatest voice of our generation and loves to perform. What a treat for all of us. Years and years of great music

Nice job, Bill - this is easily the best interview with Daryl Hall that I have ever seen or heard. Very relaxed...and everyone is more open and revealing when they are relaxed.
It’s awful, what are you talking about???
Daryl, I am so glad you took the time to interview! Bill , great job! Daryl you are such an artist, I’m sure fame chases you into privacy and you do not have the time to explain your creativity! Or even want to! Thanks for sharing with Bill about your creativity, and take on life!
They make such a great point about the human voice- and Daryl's voice is one that has held up remarkably well over time. He still sounds great and can hit the mark...
This could have been such a nice treat for Daryl Hall fans. Bill, you blew it big time, next time drink less, smoke less, and talk less

Hall and Oates fan. Interesting that DH talks about how he did most of the studio work on some of the hits with his "business partner" . But his solo recording career garnered basically one hit song.
Like the Chris rock joke. "I don't know what the hell Oates does. But Hall has never had a hit song without him"
As if Oates was integral to the duo’s hits. Bah! How many solo hits has Oates had. Zilch.
THAT PART!!!!.....

THANK YOU!!!! .....and often, live, it becomes the John Oates show
I was on my way to work the first time I heard “Throw the roses away”. I started crying because of the words. One of my absolutely favorite songs.
Janna.
Can’t stand Maher either, thank you brother.
Bless you 🙏
Thanks 🍻
They got married, had all these kids, grew apart, but still care for each other and have to still remain " together" to help keep the kids safe, taken care of ect.....So there is that part
The real issue here, and what I hear in many of Daryl's interviews, is a confusion/anger that he was never taken seriously as a solo artist, and least not in the way he wanted.
Very well said! As a true hall and Oates fan and you are so right ❤️
@Flying Fluffy Hockey Being a huge fan of Hall & Oates, I totally agree with everything you said. 🧡🙂
Interesting!
If the new album (D) is any indication, Amanda left the marriage. Daryl has often said his life is in his songs.
It's because they were never addressed by their first names.
You can hear that being acknowledged and getting recognition for his music is very important to him.
People get tired of that after awhile. Not that surprising

I’ve seen a Stern interview where Daryl did give Oates a lot of credit. Wonder what happened
Damn Daryl doesn’t want to give John any credit 🤣 Clearly some animosity there or Daryl is just very conceded
Daryl has been a prick about his
partnership" with Oates for years.
Yea I’m not a particular fan of them but obviously know their hits. I thought he came across a bit arrogant and petty when describing their relative musical contributions. A bit cringy for me
Remember, he said he had more than 30 hits but hes not counting.
Daryl has reason to be a little bitter, "Hall and Oates" is like a brand that he can't afford to lose, but Daryl has always been "the producer" of the two, and it's not even close. Billy Joel and Elton John don't have to share credit with someone like he does.
@@andrewflanders262 that all sounds depressing ha.

Disappointing that Daryl comes off as being so arrogant. John Oates praises him in his book but Daryl Hall seems to be brushing him off as if he had nothing to do with Daryl‘s career

Was looking for this comment - business partners? C’mon. Oates has a hell of a lot of talent and contributed heavily to some of their greatest hits. I’d argue his voice is just as good if not better than Daryl’s.

It must have been tiring carrying Oates for decades.

H & Os first road band. I was quite loony in my early 20s so I missed a lot of their actual success. Thanks for a great show!
