Iconic and poorly executed aren’t mutually exclusive. She’s an icon, but she’s also an 80s pop star, and a lot of them would come off weak in this room. She certainly didn’t ruin the song or anything. Most of the modern sentiment comes from a place of reverence and nostalgia. I love Madonna’s “Ray Of Light”, “Hung Up”, “Borderline”, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” But Cyndi was the better choice for the bridge part in “We Are The World” because her voiced soared through the mix in a way that Madonna could only have hoped to achieve. I love both of them. Cyndi was the right choice.
@@anthonyh4125 The whole point was, that each singer got assigned the line that would best fit their vocal style and range. If they'd chosen Madonna instead, she would not be singing the same line as Cyndi Lauper, but a line that suited her vocal better. Madonna would've been fine.
Same with Huey Lewis inheriting the part that was meant for Prince. Nothing against Prince, but Huey was so great in that part. He had to sing it MANY, MANY, MANY times, because Cyndi couldn't nail her part. Huey made the bridge so much more powerful.

I'm not a huge, in the sense that I've never bought one of her records, but I do love her voice and her energy and whenever I see her do her part in that video I found that I break into a big, stupid grin. The best ability Madonna had was that she was a dancer and a performer but never was that great singing, she didn't have that much technique or range. Her music was fun and her shows were entertaining and she was an icon in fashion but her singing was just ok. I liked them both for their different styles.
She wasn't just identifiable, at that point in time she had more soul. She could invest the lyrics with a gutsy honesty that Madona couldn't come close to.

I think that everyone who was there was supposed to be there. Lionel made a MASSIVE misjudgment trying to put Prince and MJ together. Despite their huge rivalry, Prince was also controlling and painfully shy almost to the point of a personality disorder. He did contribute a single and a music video to the We Are the World compilation album, "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" with Wendy and Lisa.
Cyndi Lauper has the most recognisable voice in the world. Prince on guitar would have been the icing on the cake. That exchange between Bruce Springsteen & Stevie Wonder towards the end gives me chills to this day!
the extended version could have had plenty of space for a Prince solo. Imagine bringing back the bridge section second time (the "when you're down and out" section) with a blazing Prince solo over those chords... I'm hearing it in my head right now. Cindy has so much more emotion in her voice, and even if she had less hits than Madonna, they were of much much better quality, Kate Bush's level. Madonna was great for brainless teen parties.
They were smart to factor in the need for using singers with recognizable voices. Like almost everyone else’s I first heard the song on the radio and what really caught my attention was hearing a succession of distinct famous voices. Lionel Ritchie started it off, then Stevie Wonder sang a few words… Paul Simon, then Kenny Rogers, etc. I was hooked, ID’ing the singers while also hearing their message. It was well done on so many levels.
Yeah! Bob’s style was a fish out of water and he was attempting to harmonize like the other singers. It wasn’t working. Wonder has this amazing talent to sing like another singer and was able to help Dylon understand what they wanted. Shows how humble Bob was and how much he wanted it to work.

I am disheartened to hear Lionel say that picking Cindi over Madonna was a mistake. Are you kidding me? Even if you thought that, which you absolutely shouldn't, why would you say that? Cindy's vocal contribution on that song was irreplaceable. So disappointed in him.

When this song came out, and subsequently the video of the performance, I was moved. No matter what you think about the singers and their personalities, they did a marvelous job with this. Anytime you get that many people together, you will have some issues. That’s the same with any large crowd working on a project, so all of you who think the egos were a bit much, remember, you weren’t there, and you didn’t have to deal with the situation as they did. They were ALL stars in their own right, and to share that spotlight with others can be intimidating, as well as intruding on their space. It was short of a miracle to have so many show up, do such a long recording session, and then have such a phenomenal hit for such a good cause. My hat’s off to all who participated in this endeavor, those who are still with us, and those who are gone from us. I salute you for your talent, and for doing an impossible task under such crazy circumstances. I still listen/watch this song today, and I’m enamored by the talent in the song. Thank you to those who gave all for this project.
Well said! The Netflix documentary revealed a lot. It was a very late and long night, they were all a bit shy and starstruck! The heat was oppressive in the room. Bits of confusion, getting everyone organized. Little delays made people cranky, understandably. Didn’t the power go out at one point. All kinds of nerves. It IS a miracle they pulled it off and the results were really cool and beautiful. ☺️

Madonna had no right to even be considered. She was an entertainer not a vocalist. This was an amazing lineup. For me personally, Steve Perry was the standout along with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper. Of course, they were all great, but these voices on this song turned it up a notch. Hearing Bob Dylon and Michael Jackson always gives me goosebumps as well. This was history in the making. 2024 and it's still one of the greatest songs ever written.

The Netflix documentary on this magical night was SO enjoyable. So special seeing everyone being so human, nervous and shy, restless and a bit impatient at times. Connecting with each other. Hitting their marks. Bob Dylan shy… and then just nailing it. So many cool stories. 😂 Self-proclaimed “good old boy” Waylon Jennings walking out when Ray wanted to do the language. Even that was iconic. What a fabulous job everyone did. Grateful to Lionel, Michael and Quincy and their team for working their magic.

I remember how much this song meant to me as a kid, how heartfelt the lyrics and vocals were. It remains a fantastic testament to the power of teamwork, music, and compassion.
What a time! I remember crying when I saw this. All these stars coming together for one day. I am so glad I got to experience the feeling of watching this when it aired the first time.
I got a ghetto blaster for Christmas that year and woke up the earliest and listened to it on the radio. I pressed record on a blank tape and got half of it. If you were a John Denver (or Harry Chapin) fan, or were aware who was actually fighting on the front for years, you have issues with this song. John Denver started fighting for causes when it wasn't the trendy thing for celebrities to do. He started "The Hunger Project" in 1977. He used his money to support it, and his platform to go to Africa and other nations and educate the world. He wrote songs on it (pull up "I Want to Live") He was never asked to do this project, almost a decade after he had been doing the actual work helping world hunger. Sadly, Harry Chapin had died by the time this was done, but had been turned down by some of the celebs on here when he tried to recruit them to help. His started "World Hunger Year" and not only worked tirelessly, but when he performed, he always "played one night for me, one for the other guy." Yup, he would donate his earns to just about every other concert. Show me any performer, before or since, that has come close to that. See the video of Bruce Springsteen talking about how Harry recruited and educated him. It's hysterical. So Harry couldn't be there, but not ONCE in any interview, to this day, has anyone credited Harry, or John, who spoke of how heartbroken he was not to be invited. So I've long had a problem with this showpiece song.

John Denver hosted the Grammys the night of this event. Despite his lengthy history of involvement in hunger projects, he was snubbed right over to be involved. I can't stand this song just for this reason. John could have easily added significant lyrics and verses to the song and his soaring voice could have made such a positive impact.
I remember this AMA ceremony. Lionel Richie hosted. And all night, he would yell,‘OUTRAGEOUS!’ I thought it was funny and it stuck out in my mind every now and then over the years. He was cool and so genuine. Then I see the Netflix special on this. Wondered why MJ wasn’t at that ceremony. This is the time where Michael ruled the world and he wasn’t at this particular awards show when everyone in music was? Now, we know why. He stayed back to work on this song, basically alone. I liked him, respected him n what he did for music. After this, I loved him. (Btw, BandAid was better.) ha! ❤
Watching the documentary about this night, I gained a deeper respect for Michael. It helped me to separate his scandals from his incredible talent and work ethic. And yes, Lionel is a character and just so cool. These special people who’ve brought us so much joy.

Cyndi has such a unique voice, and a ton of talent to go with it. Also, she was VERY popular at the time - she belonged there. Keep in mind that all the soloists had very unique voices that you could pick out while listening to this song on the radio. If you weren't watching the video, you could still identify who sang each part.
Definitely no mistake with Cyndi...commercially, Madonna was bigger, but there's no contest who was a better or more distinctive singer (no hate on Madonna but yeah...Lauper is a phenomenal singer...better than most people realize)

Cyndi is one of the best female pop vocalists ever! Her voice is powerful and extremely unique. She has the most memorable part of the song due to her talent.
These people were not just artists. They were the most influential artists of a generation joining each other to help those in need. When I listen to this song I get tears.

As a producer myself, it is funny how some huge artist can get nervous even when they are a super talent. The Dylan thing really shows this. I'm sure he's used to singing his own songs and writes to fit his vocal style. So when you have sangers like James Ingram and brilliant vocalists like Steve Perry, you may wonder where you fit in and can you fit your vocal style to this song. It was great that Stevie was able to deduce this and come over to produce/coach Dylan's vocal, to teach him how to sound like himself on this record. It's a funny space as a producer when you have to teach an artist to sound like themselves in certain situations when they aren't sure how.

I performed We are The World with my daycare class for our parents in the 80s. When the video came out they played it at the skating rink. All the kids would skate down to the screen and sing along.

Cindy has a far more identifiable voice than Madonna. She is INFINITELY a better technical singer than Madonna. There isn't any question about that.
The best ability Madonna had was that she was a dancer and a performer but never was that great singing, she didn't have that much technique or range. Her music was fun and her shows were entertaining and she was an icon in fashion but her singing was just ok. I liked them both for their different styles.

I think that everyone who was there was supposed to be there. Lionel made a MASSIVE misjudgment trying to put Prince and MJ together. Despite their huge rivalry, Prince was also controlling and painfully shy almost to the point of a personality disorder. He did contribute a single and a music video to the We Are the World compilation album, "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" with Wendy and Lisa.

They were smart to factor in the need for using singers with recognizable voices. Like almost everyone else’s I first heard the song on the radio and what really caught my attention was hearing a succession of distinct famous voices. Lionel Ritchie started it off, then Stevie Wonder sang a few words… Paul Simon, then Kenny Rogers, etc. I was hooked, ID’ing the singers while also hearing their message. It was well done on so many levels.

Yeah! Bob’s style was a fish out of water and he was attempting to harmonize like the other singers. It wasn’t working. Wonder has this amazing talent to sing like another singer and was able to help Dylon understand what they wanted. Shows how humble Bob was and how much he wanted it to work.

When this song came out, and subsequently the video of the performance, I was moved. No matter what you think about the singers and their personalities, they did a marvelous job with this. Anytime you get that many people together, you will have some issues. That’s the same with any large crowd working on a project, so all of you who think the egos were a bit much, remember, you weren’t there, and you didn’t have to deal with the situation as they did. They were ALL stars in their own right, and to share that spotlight with others can be intimidating, as well as intruding on their space. It was short of a miracle to have so many show up, do such a long recording session, and then have such a phenomenal hit for such a good cause.
My hat’s off to all who participated in this endeavor, those who are still with us, and those who are gone from us. I salute you for your talent, and for doing an impossible task under such crazy circumstances.
I still listen/watch this song today, and I’m enamored by the talent in the song. Thank you to those who gave all for this project.
Well said! The Netflix documentary revealed a lot. It was a very late and long night, they were all a bit shy and starstruck! The heat was oppressive in the room. Bits of confusion, getting everyone organized. Little delays made people cranky, understandably. Didn’t the power go out at one point. All kinds of nerves. It IS a miracle they pulled it off and the results were really cool and beautiful. ☺️

Madonna had no right to even be considered. She was an entertainer not a vocalist. This was an amazing lineup. For me personally, Steve Perry was the standout along with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper. Of course, they were all great, but these voices on this song turned it up a notch. Hearing Bob Dylon and Michael Jackson always gives me goosebumps as well. This was history in the making. 2024 and it's still one of the greatest songs ever written.

The Netflix documentary on this magical night was SO enjoyable. So special seeing everyone being so human, nervous and shy, restless and a bit impatient at times. Connecting with each other. Hitting their marks. Bob Dylan shy… and then just nailing it. So many cool stories. 😂 Self-proclaimed “good old boy” Waylon Jennings walking out when Ray wanted to do the language. Even that was iconic. What a fabulous job everyone did. Grateful to Lionel, Michael and Quincy and their team for working their magic.

What a time! I remember crying when I saw this. All these stars coming together for one day. I am so glad I got to experience the feeling of watching this when it aired the first time.
I got a ghetto blaster for Christmas that year and woke up the earliest and listened to it on the radio. I pressed record on a blank tape and got half of it. I got the record for my birthday in February. 1985!!! It was amazing and memorable for sure. I love that I was a part of that era! Let's not forget the video played over and over on MTV 🎉

If you were a John Denver (or Harry Chapin) fan, or were aware who was actually fighting on the front for years, you have issues with this song. John Denver started fighting for causes when it wasn't the trendy thing for celebrities to do. He started "The Hunger Project" in 1977. He used his money to support it, and his platform to go to Africa and other nations and educate the world. He wrote songs on it (pull up "I Want to Live") He was never asked to do this project, almost a decade after he had been doing the actual work helping world hunger.
Sadly, Harry Chapin had died by the time this was done, but had been turned down by some of the celebs on here when he tried to recruit them to help. His started "World Hunger Year" and not only worked tirelessly, but when he performed, he always "played one night for me, one for the other guy." Yup, he would donate his earns to just about every other concert. Show me any performer, before or since, that has come close to that. See the video of Bruce Springsteen talking about how Harry recruited and educated him. It's hysterical. So Harry couldn't be there, but not ONCE in any interview, to this day, has anyone credited Harry, or John, who spoke of how heartbroken he was not to be invited.

Then I see the Netflix special on this. Wondered why MJ wasn’t at that ceremony. This is the time where Michael ruled the world and he wasn’t at this particular awards show when everyone in music was? Now, we know why. He stayed back to work on this song, basically alone. I liked him, respected him n what he did for music. After this, I loved him.

Cyndi was the best decision. Her voice is so unique but still it feels like she matches perfect within the group. Madonna is great when it comes to self-marketing, but not for a group song where the message matters, not the people singing it.
As a producer myself, it is funny how some huge artist can get nervous even when they are a super talent. The Dylan thing really shows this. I'm sure he's used to singing his own songs and writes to fit his vocal style. So when you have sangers like James Ingram and brilliant vocalists like Steve Perry, you may wonder where you fit in and can you fit your vocal style to this song. It was great that Stevie was able to deduce this and come over to produce/coach Dylan's vocal, to teach him how to sound like himself on this record. It's a funny space as a producer when you have to teach an artist to sound like themselves in certain situations when they aren't sure how.

This event was so huge back in the day, and I’ve always been interested in the process. And I must say, after all the many times I’ve listened to Lionel Richie speak of We Are The World, or anything for that matter, he always seems to be just the nicest guy.

It was perfect. God had who was supposed to be there, and it was beautifully done. It would not have been the same without Cyndi.....or any of the others.
IMO they were all great for USA Africa, Ban Aid, Northern Lights, Hear' n Aid , the singers, the musicians who played the instruments, the producers, engineers, video crew and those who volunteered the studios, food, cars. Just beautiful. They helped to save life's, that's all that matters. Hats off to all of them

Yikes… Lionel is wrong. Cyndi is 100 times the singer that Madonna is… there’s no comparison. And she’s just… nicer. And back then, there really wasn’t much distance between them in terms of fame
I performed We are The World with my daycare class for our parents in the 80s. When the video came out they played it at the skating rink. All the kids would skate down to the screen and sing along.
Nearly 40 years later and no other musical collaboration is as memorable as this one is to me.
