    At 14:00 it says renamed 10 bones because symmetry is available and is renaming the opposite 5 bones as well, which is not ideal because your right ear bones are also named with (.L). You can deactivate symmetry if you're renaming the bones so you can differentiate them by Right and Left (.R) (.L) ... Well at least in my case it renames everything with (.L) On his case it renamed the right side ears as (.R)

    • @jemskid7
      @jemskid7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That happened to me too. While it's annoying, its not the end of the world. I'll definitely try turning off symmetry before I rename something though.

    14:00 not sure if you had the same thing happen, but when I did this when I renamed the crown of the head it renamed both the left and right side as DEF_Scalp.L.SomeNumber because I had symetrize on the X axis turned on. Simply turning Symetrize off, renaming both sides, then turning it back on does the trick perfectly

    Oh wow. I didn't expected so many bones for the face. I was used for so long to do 2-3 bones and make tons of morphs for expressions, but these bones helped me a lot for my anthropomorphic dragon. She got some big ear fins and adding a few bones with copy rotation given me plenty of control with such ease.

    Facial rigging has gotta be my favorite out of any rigging, thanks for doing it justice! Will you be covering how to rig flowing objects like long hair, coats, and scarves some day? I imagine it'd be short and possibly easy, but I'm curious if you've got a method that could make rigging that stuff easier.

    • @Dikko
      @Dikko  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is a way to do stuff like ponytails and scarves pretty easily - Might not neccesarily be covered in this series, but it's definitely something that can be covered in a single video :)

    • @wheany
      @wheany 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know if this is ideal, but I have used spline IK chains down the length of the object with controllers for the start, midpoint and end of each spline (like in the spline IK videos in this series).
      Then if I have multiple such chains in the object (like for a cape or skirt), I use a master controller for each "level" (so "start master" is the parent to all the "start" handles). That lets me move all the handles on the same level at the same time, so i can stretch and turn the object more naturally but also tweak individual handles if needed.
      So Master control -> individual tweak controls -> spline with hook modifiers -> spline IK constraint on the bone chains

    this videos has been very helpful whit my first proper rig in blender (is mechanical doll thing) but i'm a bit stuck with something, is probably nothing and probably won't affect the end result but after adding the bones to the face that controls the faces and the inners parts because the face can open, when i do ctrl+p to add the bones to the weights it add a bunch of MCH_IK bones, i've check, they have the deform tick off, is mostly annoying and like I said probably wont affect the end result after I weight it to the correct face bones, but is annoying seeing those bones added to the weight every time i open that menu, any idea on how to fix it?

    Hey mate, not sure if anyone else told you but I think it renamed 10 bones instead of 5 at 14:00 because it was symmetrized? If you look at the naming convention the numbers go up in 2's to account for the other side.
    I'm making this creature that basically has a cylindrical face with a wide mouth going across it. I need it to bend in a u shape up and down which should be relatively easy to do but then I also want his head to stretch into a circle with his mouth gaping open, probably need some shape keys etc. I imagine none of that made any sense haha but hoping I can rig it up based off of this very thorough tutorial!

  • @WaterShowsProd
    @WaterShowsProd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What was the reason for aligning the upper and lower jaw mechanism bones with the aim bone, as opposed to defining the Copy Rotation as Local Space and keeping them aligned with the central lip deformation bones? I can understand having the two bones because I assume you'll use them to parent all the subsequent lip deformation bones, but realigning them the the middle point like that confused me. Or is that going to play into general mouth manipuation further down the line?

    • @WaterShowsProd
      @WaterShowsProd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, having watched the following 2 videos and seeing how you finished the face rig, I think I understand now. By having those bones come together you're assuring that 0º is a properly closed mouth, rather than having it at 8º or some other number.

    Blender automatic weights is amazing... when it wants to. Sometimes you have the "failed" message and you will have to do it all by hand.

    • @wheany
      @wheany 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far the reason for me has been loose geometry and what seems to fix it mostly is to go to edit mode on the mesh, press P and select "separate by loose parts", go back to object mode, parent all the parts to the armature, then join the parts back together with ctrl-J.
      It doesn't work perfectly, some loose parts that are near/intersecting one another will probably get slightly different weights which will cause clipping issues, but it gets it close.

    Dikko or anyone, any idea why when i rotate it does not rotate as smooth as when you do it? No matter from what angle i rotate it seems it rotates only on 1 axis, the axis is different from each angle but its still 1 axis only. • @TeiPerez
    @TeiPerez ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! I love your tutorials have been following them and making my own character along with you! It's been great! The only problem I've run into so far is when I try to do the lip seal. I can't get the mesh to seal correctly and adding more bones to the lower lip just causes it to get distorted when the mouth opens completely. How did you manage to make the mesh work so seamlessly with automatic weights and only one bone for the lower lip/jaw?

    • @Dikko
      @Dikko  ปีที่แล้ว

      The trick I find is to have the lips close to each other but not overly intersecting. Also you you need to make sure that something like the jaw bone isnt affecting the lips in the weight paints (or the tongue bones especially!)

    • @TeiPerez
      @TeiPerez ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dikko Thank you for your reply! I I think the initial problem was my bones were too big so only the top of the bone was affecting the mesh causing the distortion. The second issue was the mouth size. I realized I needed the extras bones for the mouth to close properly due to the distance being greater from the center bone to the edge of the mouth. Thank you for your help and for reaching out even though you have a lot going on! Best of wishes for you and your family!
