Did the witch of Endor really call up Samuel?

  • Did the witch of Endor really call up Samuel, and does this story prove that dead souls live outside of the body?
    The Bible talks about how Saul obtained help from a witch to try to communicate with the spirit of Samuel. This particular event is used to support the belief that disembodied spirits remain alive after their body dies. Many people also believe the spirit or soul of the dead go immediately to heaven or hell. However, that’s not what the Bible says.
    As we look at the events of Saul and the witch of Endor I see three possible scenarios.
    1. The first scenario is that it was actually the spirit of Samuel that was raised up by the witch. This is the most popular understanding, but I think it has the most problems, and we will see why in a moment.
    2. The second possibility is that the witch summoned a demon that pretended to be Samuel. This is quite possible since witches gain power through demons, and the Bible even says she had a “familiar spirit”, which most likely refers to a demon.
    3. And the third possible scenario is that there was no spirit at all and the witch simply tricked Saul to get back at him for banishing the necromancers from the kingdom. Considering other things that are said in the Bible, I think this is also very likely, and we will look at those things as well.
    Keep those three scenarios in mind as we look at the Scriptures that deal with these issues.

    Thank goodness I'm a Bible believing Christian (Authorised King James Version only) , not affiliated with any church. Therefore whenever confusing doctrine or views that conflict, are presented, I turn to the Scripture. Scipture says it was *_Samuel_* who spoke to Saul. Therefore it was Samuel. Only YHWH has the knowledge to know Saul would die the next day - no demon pretender would know that. Thus YHWH allowed Samuel to come up from Sheol (not hell, he was in a different part of Sheol, in the bosom of Abraham), to give Saul his verdict. The witch necromancer was obviously petrified, because she had in fact never expected to actually see Samuel appear. Always read the Scripture as it states plainly, and do not look for hidden meanings, when the truth is plain to see.

      Totally agree. Read the text plainly. It says Samuel spoke and the witch of endor was afraid. Saul had to perceive the meaning before Samuel actually stood before him because Saul didn't have God's spirit to know. And Samuel came up from the grave...as Jesus mentions to the thief on the cross would be with him in paradise, which also confirms Jesus having first descended before he ascended Ephesians 4:8-10. This is where Samuel was brought up from.

      Yes read the Bible, the Bible does not lie. But this video proves that without the correct lenses, it can be easily misinterpreted. We view the Holy Scriptures through the lens of tradition, a tradition that was passed down to us by the Apostles who had very special insight into interpreting scripture due to the personal and direct relationship they held with our Lord when he walked the Earth in flesh . You must remember, how much of the early church practices of the Apostles and other disciples, (who were bishops and priests, disproving the whole nO pRiEsThOoD nonsense) were never written or weren’t included in the Bible when the Bible was put together in three sections (The Old Testament, The Four Gospels, The Book of Apostles). This is why I turned away from Protestantism. There are many falsehoods, misinterpretations, and even outright lies that come from Protestants and Catholics. The only Church I have found that is not in conflict with the Prophets, Christ, the Apostles, and the ancient Church Fathers and Mothers is theeEastern Orthodox Church. That is why I believe it to be the true church Christ established with the Apostles.

    The Bible says it was Samuel. What gets me is, “when she saw Samuel, she screamed.” Maybe God actually sent Samuel to tell him what was going to happen, because Samuel didn’t give him advice, only the judgement of God upon him and his kingdom. She may have been doing her thing by pretending to see Samuel and then he actually showed up. They only pretended to speak to the dead, not actually bring up their spirit. That’s why I think she screamed when she saw Samuel actually there. It’s just something we could find out one day.

      I think the same too, Bible clearly says Samuel said this, Samuel said that….if it was a demon, somewhere in the entire Bible God would have revealed that it was a demon, He did not….imagine this ….Saul was a directly chosen king by God, he needed help , Samuel was dead, because of his disobedience God did not respond to Saul….God is not going abandon Saul for that disobedience completely, correct ? Consequences of his disobedience has already began by making David king, right ? I strongly believe it was Samuel came up to speak to Saul which God allowed. Amen !!

    • @boltingpuppies
      @boltingpuppies 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. Scripture says directly that it was Samuel. The witch didn't even realize it was King Saul asking her to bring up someone _until after_ Samuel responded. She screamed when she saw Samuel. She saw a divine being (an elohim) coming up. Hades or the underworld had a place of torment for the wicked and also a place of rest for the righteous as we see in the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus and Father Abraham. When we die in this age we either go to rest or into torment. (After Jesus' crucifixion he went to Hades to preach/proclaim to disobedient departed spirits from the time of Noah; they were still there and conscious, able to be preached to. Jesus also 'led the captives free' which I believe is referring to the righteous like Father Abraham and Lazarus.) Samuel very well could have come up from his rest and did according to scripture.

    1 Samuel 15:35 says that Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death... I believe this is refers to this incident. Consorting with the witch only showed the desperation and extent of rebellion Saul had fallen into. God allowed Samuel to manifest and the witch had no power to make this happen. That’s why she was surprised.

    It never seemed plausible that God would allow a witch to compel His own dead servant to obey her and affirm her power -- essentially glorifying her. No way! The second two scenariors are plausible. Thanks for carefully unpacking this. Sadly, this evil practice is popular today.

    A demon cannot conjure up the spirit of a servant of the Lord.
    God would not allow it, Samuel would certainly not respond to the demon ... and as we know, the dead sleep until the resurrection.
    Samuel may have arisen with the others at the time that Jesus was resurrected but certainly not before.
    I always thought that "familiar" spirits were spirits that appeared to be someone that is "familiar" to a person. But it seems that familiar spirits are spirits that are close to the witch that does the conjuring.

    • @raulescobar3881
      @raulescobar3881 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Familiar spirits” are as you thought; they are demons imitating someone familiar to you to convince you of the lie. They will bring up things that only you, and that family member or friend that has passed away, would know. This is why people are fooled, they are very convincing, but remember, they are powerful, invisible beings that observe you and know things about you and your loved one. These spirits used to be angels that fell for satan’s lies and are now fallen angels; they’ve been in this state for thousands of years.

    I just went back and read the section on Samuel that you are discussing. Your reasons, or arguments to say 1: that the witch tricked him or 2: That the apparition of Samuel was in fact a Demon or a familiar spirit do not follow. Before I go into further, I am not at all condoning the practice of necromancy, or mediumship or any other daemonic practice. However, I have seen many other opinions, and I do believe personally, that this was indeed Samuel, allowed by God in an absolute one off situation. Firstly, what did the witch have to gain? When you read the Bible, you can see she’s clearly terrified even before she knew it was Saul! When she found out it was Saul she was even more terrified. But what got me the most I suppose was that her terror in actually seeing Samuel. The Bible is clear on that particular part. I believe that that rules out that the witch was trying to trick him, she was too afraid for Her own life, and horrified when she saw Samuel. Secondly, as for the argument of the Apparition being a Demon, This is certainly possible, but it does not come across as probable. Note that the apparition of SamuelTold the complete truth too Saul, He informed Saul as what he had done to earn the Lord’s Dis favour and then informed Saul at the following day he was to die. Why would a demon do that? If it really was a Demon, he would be more likely to say something along the lines of “Go on out there tomorrow you will be fine, and you will be on the throne by midnight” or something along those lines. Demons do not tell the truth, or I suppose they called when it suits their purposes but in this case, they would have no purpose to suit. I personally believe that the Lord allowed as an absolutely worn off for Samuel to come back and to tell Saul what he wanted to know. Now having said that, there are still arguments raging over this and again I don’t excuse mediumship or any of that nonsense, because I do know that going to a medium opens up a whole bunch of doors to Demons and yes they are familiar spirits. But I believe that in the case of Samuel it was different. The Lord has his reasons for everything he does, now I could be wrong, but when you see the evidence in the Bible, at no time did we see even a hint that it was a Demon. The author of second Samuel has told the story like it was. God bless brother

      This remark comes from a person who claims that when Messiah died, His flesh was dead and Yeshua had no consciences. If that is the case then Messiah misspoke when He said destroy this temple and in three days "I", He did not say the Father, nor did He say Elohim will raise Him up, He said "I" will raise this temple up. How can Messiah raise Himself if there is no conscience in Him? Messiah said to the Father Into thy hand I commit my Spirit. Stephen utter these same words. To claim that Messiah was un-consciences in the grave is Heresy and distortion of Elohim word. Look what Peter said, For Messiah also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust. in order that He might bring us to Elohim, having been put to death in the Flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also He WENT and made proclamation to the Spirits now in prison who were once disobedient when the patience of Elohim kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark. So did Messiah go to the prison and wake up the death just to make a proclamation, or were the spirit of the death conscience? You see what really is going on in the Messianic movement is a secret attempt to discourage the Christians from holding a believe that has nothing to do with salvation, all this movement is concern with knowledge, nothing more, be careful my friends to what there heretics are preaching. Be careful with those who claim that Yeshua is Torah. Yeshua is the voice for Elohim when He walk on earth. Yeshua was before Torah was ever mention.

      The concept of necromancers/witches being in league with Satan was totally unknown in this era of the bible history. The Jewish concept of Satan, and his function in the heavenly hierarchy, is not quite the same as the Christians'. Reading modern concepts into ancient writings results in serious misunderstanding. pentirah5 : I certainly understand the importance of sound hermeneutics when studying ancient holy Scripture within its historical relevance. The very fact that Torah forbid covenant Israel from witchcraft confirms that they understood the seriousness of this sin.

    • @pentirah5282
      @pentirah5282 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Patrick. But my point is, the specific practice we term witchcraft was unknown to ancient Israel. Using that word in that context gives a false impression of the practice G-d was forbidding. The woman of Endor was not really a witch, in our modern understanding of the word, she was nearer to a necromancer. I am not suggesting either practice is acceptable.

    • @PatrickWilliamsonalligatorvet
      @PatrickWilliamsonalligatorvet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pentirah5 : Your point is very true and so very important. The understanding of the modern term “witchcraft,” as used today, actually diminishes, because of today’s Hollywood and storybook popularity, the seriousness of the curse of God and His need for the death penalty. Death, “surely dead” (Gen. 2:17) is God’s only means for sin’s final and eternal eradication. Praise God that His truth (Messiah) unveils the lies of ha satan while ensuring through faith everlasting life.

      It's simple, first at the mountain of transfiguration, The Bible states, the men with Jesus saw a vision. Therefore Moses and Elijah were not physically there, but were seen by a vision only. As for Hebrews 12:23 and Rev 6:9, again a vision for what to happen for The Chosen Jews, (who are chosen to be of the 144,000). As for the word spirit, or souls, that has nothing to do with the dead living! The dead are experiencing nothing as Ecclesiastes 9:5-10 says! However, it mentioned the word (spirits), because it's talking about a future state of being for The Jews! Remember Jesus own words, he said flesh can not enter Heaven! Therefore, in this case, The 144,000, chosen Jews, they are chosen for the purpose of joining Jesus in Heaven! Therefore, they must become spirit beings in order to live in Heaven! But until that time, they will remain in a state of death! Experiencing nothing, as scripture says!

      The old testament is written from an observers perspective. The writers documented what they observed and could (and have been) deceived. Witches and fortune tellers get their information from demons that definitely do not know the future, but what happens can absolutely be observed as that. When you receive your fortune from a teller, the demon either gives the bad vision to the teller or can mimic the spirit of someone who died; their appearance, voice, personality, etc. The demon, now allowed to be a part of the person's life, follows them and curses them by making the vision reality. The only thing that can prevent this future is the hand of God, which was definitely not in Saul's favor before nor after the incident.

      Because paradise was the holding compartment for all OT believers down below, in the earth. Torments is also there separated by the Great Abyss. Torments holds all the demon general officers, the really bad ones. They will be unleashed during the tribulation. The thief on the cross absolutely was in paradise with Jesus as they were both sent directly. Jesus proclaimed His victory over sin. This is what Jesus was doing for 3 days. So, actually, he did go there with Him literally the same day regardless of comma placement. He was then resurrected and returned in resurrection body. This time to proclaim His resurrection to all who believed and those who did not. Some 5k+ witnesses saw Him in this form as He ascended into Heaven, taking all OT believers with Him. Paradise is currently empty as a result.

    Although I disagree with the conclusion that this spirit was a demon pretending to be Samuel, the whole story points to a different conclusion based on two points. The woman cries out in a loud voice when she sees Samuel. This is quite unexpected for her. Also, in the end, we see pity and empathy for Saul upon the spirit's words from her. She prepares a meal for him and together with the servants finally gets him to eat. If her intentions were based upon a known deception by Saul in disguise, and her anger against the king for her abolishment, why would there be these actions. I know there is the possibility for the conclusions drawn by the video but the whole account seems to point towards real surprise upon seeing an actual spirit and the woman's actions after the experience. I would be happy to hear a rebuttal or how my own conclusions are wrong. One other point, if the woman came to the realization that this was truly Samuel, it would make sense that she drew the conclusion that this was the king. Who else would disturb Samuel from his sleep? But it is not entirely clear to me how she would have recognized Saul in the first place?
    I would like to add that I do enjoy the scriptural references used to back your reasoning and without the details I've pointed out this would seem to be the proper conclusion. And I really enjoyed learning about the ventriloquist connection.

I have watched previous videos from this channel on the conviction that souls sleep and the righteous do not go to be with the Lord after His resurrection. I think, in a way, the thought process for this video came at a cost of "proving" previous convictions from another teaching; influenced reasoning based upon one's own translation of understanding. If this is true then your conclusions are influenced by how you've interpreted the word rather than a full reading of the whole text. I totally agree with the interpretation of scripture being based upon scripture interpreting scripture being the best and if scripture gives us an understanding that we might be wrong, we should examine this and ask the Spirit for discernment rather than "dig in" with a possible incorrect line of reasoning. I have had to swallow my own pride and allow the word to show me when I'm wrong rather than cling to incorrect reasoning. As a teacher, you are well aware of the responsibility of invalid or irresponsible interpretation which is proven as correct by the use of scripture chosen carefully to validate a claim even though it may be wrong. There is condemnation for this. If you have done this then you should deeply analyze all of your reasoning for your conclusion. Or at least give the alternate possibility its due recognition. We are all at different levels of knowledge and wait for His perfection. And let me be clear - I am not accusing you of false interpretation or purposefully misleading anyone. It just seems a possibility of incorrect reasoning in this case.

Third, why was the response almost verbatim to what Samuel said to Saul why he was alive and indeed prophetic. His sons were killed and the Phillistines would have in fact killed him in a terrible manor. The Lord's will was turning over the kingdom to David, why tell Saul the truth? I feel it was the last rejection, of many, in a unique manor that so many other biblical figures in the old Testament experienced. You gravitate to verses that take much speculation and throw out plain scriptures. Though I don't believe you are a cult you are using similar tactics to interpret scriptures that the cults use. However that being said where we stand on this doctrine is not nearly as important as you seem to believe. Preach Christ, his life death reserection. Preach repentance from dead works and lordship of Jesus , preach the character of Christ so we will know what a christian looks like and acts like. Only by falling in love with jesus will any of us be able to follow him. and you will be preaching life. These doctrines are important so far as they are part of the bible and should be an in house debates but they are not the line in the sand that you seem to make them. The people who believe opposite of you are not lying any more than i believe you are lying. One side is wrong the other is write. For it to be a lie the party teaching it has to know it other wise they are just wrong. Paul to.d me in the new testament that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and that for him to die it would be gain for him but loss for us. If he were going to be in the ground where would the gain be. Makes no sence. What you are teaching is the same doctrine as Jehovah's witnesses. I think your interpretation is incorrect. Ecclesiastes is taken out of context. Ecc. 9:5 is not a definitive statement about the afterlife but represents a specific application of the book's entire theme is that man's wisdom and earthly pursuits (without God) ultimately amount to nothing. If anything, the statement that the "dead know nothing" represents Solomon's nihilistic view that after death there is nothing, so you might as well live it up on Earth now. Next, in 1 Samuel, the medium is actually shocked that Samuel shows up - rather than the familiar spirit she was, er, familiar with. Finally, verse 16 onwards actually refer to the dead man as Samuel and not a deceiving spirit - unlike the example from Kings you cite to where the text specifically reveals that it was a deceiving spirit.

      Judges 9:8-15
      The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
      But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
      And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
      But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
      Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
      And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
      Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
      And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
      Does a plain reading of that text mean we should believe now that the bible teaches that trees talk to each other? Or is establishing context important, and taking the council of the entire word to establish the true meaning being communicated by the text also important?
      The bible is a literary work. Sometimes the wider context of the rest of the text effects how you should understand specific verses.
      If it says the dead know nothing you have two options with the story, either it is a glaring contradiction and the book of either samuel or the book of ecclesiates and job are lying to us.
      or you are meant to infer that it is infact demons pretending to be spirits of the dead which is why God doesn't want us to try to communicate with our departed loved ones, as Lex has done here.

This could have been the only instance or one of many that the dead was allowed to truly communicate. Why should any of us be so high minded that we have to put these events in a box.

      You misunderstood me. I gave three possible scenarios. I think one possibility is that it was Samuel, but I think it is the least likely because of other things that are said in the Bible.

      To: Pastor Lex,
      Read the message from The Poster Avalon D. Here! This is a copy & paste. > Quick answer no it was not samuel.. not only did that spirit claim and gave credit to saul asking him why did you summon me instead of God even saul believed he summoned him when in reality no human has power to summon a dead love one.. also God forbids communicating with the dead so God is not going break His own law for anyone.. also that spirit didn't tell Saul anything he didn't already know telling him God turned away from you.. also saul was not killed by the enemy like the spirit said instead saul lost all hope and commuted suicide."

      Big little biggs123. You said, > "So the scriptures clearly say Samuel spoke to Saul........."
      The scriptures ALSO clearly say You will not surely die. Genesis 3:4. YOU BELIEVE THAT 2.

      Allen Elman , that’s a false equivalency. I don’t even get your point. What Satan said to Eve was a lie.

      Biggs123 remember Moses was on the mountain and Jesus and Elijah wuth Peter, James, and John. Moses we know died a physical death, but his spirit was not bound to the grave spirits don't sleep. Check out my response to this up top under William Verdell.

    I know this is a really old video but something to think about is, god exist outside of time, he sees it all from Adam to the second coming, so in theory when we die we enter that realm, which means we would already be in heaven with the father

    A witch cannot ressurrect a dead person. When people die, they are dead, they are not immortal ghosts that go here or there. We are dead and the body is put into the grave, in the ground. The spirit that powered us returns to God in heaven, but that isn't us. We are that spirit combined with the body. Without the two, we are not. Neither one nor the other is us. And neither do we have control over. God does. Therefore the spirit she raised was a demon. I agree with this video that it is the correct understanding of the scriptures in this matter.
