SDAs have problems with these kinds of situations as they slap their 'soul-sleep' doctrine which is also taught by their cousin religion Jehova's Witnesses.
7 counter reasons why it was infact Samuel the prophet.
(Refer to Dr. Batchelor's 7 reasons why it was not Samuel)
      1. Because of them two only the witch had the ability to see a soul.
      3. The witch did not resurrect or brought Samuel to life, it was his soul.
      4. God would not speak to king Saul through dreams or by the living prophets so he took his chances at a dead one. He was desperate.
      5. What Samuel said was Saul and his armies would be defeated by the Philistines, him and his sons would die tomorrow. These things actually happened.
      6. Truth doesn't have to be full of hope. Samuel just plainly told the truth. There are obviously things Jesus said that are hopeless. Ex. "Apart from me you can do nothing." "You will die in your sins" and many more.
      7. Saul's way of getting answers by way of a witch was utterly wrong. It was Samuels words, not of the Lords.
      8. Samuel when summoned did not perform miracles and signs he was just telling his knowledge of what to come.
Here's one more thing to help you evaluate "soul-sleep". How come Moses appeared with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration?

There is NO WAY God answered the request of a woman involved in a practice God called an abomination and carried the death penalty. And please explain to me WHY DID SAMUEL COME UP FROM THE GROUND INSTEAD OF FROM ABOVE?? It was an evil spirit in disguise.

@@cryptobulletsNo. We Adventists like to believe God is consistent in His proclamations and never contradicts Himself. It's insane to believe God answered a witch's request after CONDEMNING THE PRACTICE as an abomination. It was an evil spirit.

Well commentated pastor Doug, except you missed one thing, the bible itself said it was Samuel.
I Samuel 28: 15 "And Samuel said to Saul ...."
I Samuel 28:16 "Then said Samuel..."
In scripture, the phrase, "...perceived that it was..." often means "someone found out or discovered something."
When the text says in verse 14, that Saul perceived that it was Samuel, it means that he found out or discovered it was Samuel.
    reference verses
    Judges 6:22
And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, .....
    I Samuel 3:8
[...] And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
    II Samuel 5:12
And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel ....
    Replace perceived with understood;
Gibeon understood, Eli understood, David understood.
After the woman's description, in verse 14 Saul understood that it was Samuel.

I’m not so sure that everything in the Bible is real either. Therefore I don’t know if it was Samuel or not. I haven’t crossed over yet so I cannot say what is what

Willow Oh my Lord Jesus. Dogs most certainly do not have a soul. The soul is the nature of the spirit that goes back to God at death. It is an eternal part of God. Or to hell, if it is not. A dog is a “beast,” and cannot make that choice. No where in the Bible does It say that any animal has a soul. I’ve never even heard of anyone thinking such a thing.
I love my two dogs but they do not have a soul. 😳

1 samuels 28: 15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
My question is, if this is not samuel then why scripture says in verse 15 " And Samuel said to saul" , and verse 16 "Then said Samuel" why it doesn't say "An evil spirit said to saul"?

So the person who wrote the book of 1 Samuel under the guidance of the Holy Spirit lied when he said it was Samuel? Shouldn’t the person who wrote 1 Samuel say it was a familiar spirit impersonating Samuel? But it doesn’t say that. Conclusion : the writer lied when he said it was Samuel? 28:16 ( then said Samuel) end of quote.

Why do people confuse each other with things that are simple. Thats like people saying "well my conclusion is Jesus is Lucifer because of the morning star reference, the bible points it out here and there". Lol, C'mon now

If it was really Samuel, this spirit would come down from heaven, not up from the ground. When GOD sends spirits(angels) , sends them from heaven, not from earth. And too, GOD never made a conscious ghost at creation. Man became a soul. I wonder why GOD would speak to Saul when he had cut off all the means to which He(GOD) can speak to him(Saul). First, he despised Samuel's councils, killed all the priests of GOD. How can GOD now answer him when he had rejected him. The woman only screamed because the demon exposed Saul to her. First and foremost, mediums DO NOT conjure up the dead. They really conjure up demons.

I tend to think it will Samuel. The reason I think this is that the Lord so many times prohibited and I quote “talking to the dead“. Perhaps, there was a way back then, with as you say those incantations (which by the way is not in the Bible“). The woman displayed genuine fear. If this was some kind of set up I don’t think she would’ve acted as scared. Today we know a lot more about familiar spirits. We also know the spirits can only tell certain things. For example, those familiar spirits think sorry want you to think for example that they may be a deceased and they going to tell you all the things that you want to hear, they are certainly, as we all know that Demons are liars, I’m not going to tell you that tomorrow, you and your sons will be with me. No I’m not saying definitely that this was done by the Lord but I’m also saying I do think it was Samuel. Like I said familiar spirits will tell you the things you want to hear, Samuel told saw what he did not want to hear. God Bless

This is edifying. I learned something from your breakdown of this passage today. I couldn't help thinking of an interesting parallel. Saul had turned a deaf ear to the law and was becoming more wicked with his persecution of David. In the New Testament, we also have a Saul who is persecuting the Apostles and Disciples of Christ. This Saul is also of the tribe of Benjamin by his own admission in his epistles. This Saul is also known as "Paul", a name that means "little". Benjamin was the smallest tribe. Paul claims Jesus spoke to him, but how do we know?

Sure thing. There are 2 Sauls in the Bible, one in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament. In the Old Testament (around 1000BC or so) Saul was the first king of Israel, and you can read about him in 1 Samuel. In the New Testament (35-65AD or so) a man named Saul was a Pharisee who hated Christians. Jesus revealed himself to him (Acts 9) and he converted to Christianity and wrote many of the books in the New Testament. In Acts 13:9 we see that he became known as Paul. Hope this helps

Tommy yes that is correct. King Saul of Israel in the O.T. ,and of course Saul of Tarsus converted to become St. Paul the apostle of the N.T.

    • @polycube868
      @polycube868 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, Saul in the Old Testament was Israel's first king, Saul in the New Testament was the Apostle Paul's Jewish birth name as there is no letter P in the Hebrew alphabet, so P in Paul becomes S, or Saul, so in Israel Paul McCartney would be known as Saul McCartney.

Demons are always present, watching our every action. They know our secrets. Often people conjure up deceased loved ones. The demon knowing our secret things can fool the conjurer into thinking it is the deceased because the demon answers the secret thing/question correctly. Any power the witch has is demonic only! Having said that, could it have really been Samuel? If God allowed it then Yes! In closing, (1 Samuel 28:6) says, "And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets." Samuel was a prophet! This is a hard one to confront . First if it’s accurate a witch has the power to resurrect a spirit , especially a holy man like Samuel ? Wouldn’t he be in heaven with the Lord? I can’t imagine God would allow his spiritual form to leave for the sake of a witch . Then again maybe it was Gods will so that Saul would get the message your doomed no matter what and the only person you’ll ever believe is Samuel himself.

I'm not sure those seven points prove what DB intends them to prove. Here were the seven points:
    1) Saul has to take the witch at her word that it was Samuel. Now, if the witch knew what Samuel looked like (because he was a public figure) then she could lie to Saul, but if she didn't then she in fact saw Samuel (or if it was a deceiving spirit, it did a good job of impersonating). Either way, this does not prove that it was a deceiving spirit.
    2) Can the devil resurrect a prophet? The answer is clearly no, but I don't think anyone is claiming that he is. The other side of this debate doesn't claim Satan resurrected Samuel, but that God resurrected Samuel. Now, DB imparts some of his own beliefs in his interpretation about 1 Samuel 28:12, which says "When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"" Another perfectly reasonable interpretation of that verse would be that the witch was planning on faking it, and screamed in surprise when Samuel actually popped up. If she were surprised, it would be because God (no Satan) raised him up, and she wasn't expecting anything supernatural to occur.
    3) God would not speak to Saul through prophets. He quotes 1 Samuel 28:15 to say the Bible says God wouldn't speak through a prophet. But...Saul is the one talking in that verse. Saul is literally telling Samuel (or whomever) that God wouldn't talk to him through prophets. That is NOT a proof text to say Saul wasn't speaking to Samuel, when Saul is literally speaking to Samuel in that verse. That would be like me going to a pastor and saying "no pastor in this town is willing to help me," and then that pastor says "well, according to your own words I can't help you, because I am a pastor in this town." Seems a bit disingenuous to use that verse as a proof text.
    4) The prophecy is technically false. But it isn't. Here is what Samuel said: 1 Samuel 28:19 "The LORD will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me..." It doesn't say the Philistines will personally kill him, but rather that God would use the Philistines to end his life, which absolutely happened. So the prophecy is true. Actually, it kind of sounds like this pastor is misrepresenting the text to make it sound like it actually says a Philistine would kill him when that isn't the language used.
    5) The message was hopeless. True, and Samuel gave Saul hopeless messages in his life, so this sounds pretty consistent to me. Read 1 Samuel 15:28-29 and tell me if that message (which clearly came from the living Samuel) had a hint of hope in it for Saul.
    6) It was not the Lord. 1 Corinthians 10:13-14 said Saul did not inquire of the Lord, and that is true. He inquired of a witch. That doesn't mean the Lord did not intervene in the situation.
    7) DB uses Revelation 16:14, which speaks of demonic spirits that come out of the dragon in preparation for the battle of Armageddon, to say that an evil spirit was impersonating Samuel thousands of years before the events of Revelation 16:14.
Now, I'm not saying that DB is purposefully misleading his listeners, but I find his interpretive practice in this passage at least a little questionable, especially regarding using Revelation 16:14 and 1 Samuel 28:15 to say that it wasn't Samuel. What happened in the passage was that someone (possibly or even likely Samuel) came up and gave a very specific and very true prophecy regarding what would happen to Saul and his children the next day (they would lose to the Philistines and be dead...both of those things absolutely happened so it was a true prophecy...that is important). The Samuel figure rebuked Saul (a strange thing for a deceiving spirit to do, usually they lie to make the listener happy) and spoke of fulfilling the prophecy the living Samuel gave in chapter 15. The Bible says that we are to test whether someone is a true prophet by seeing if their prophecies come true. This one did, so I am inclined to disagree with DB here and say that it was in fact Samuel raised by God to rebuke Saul.
Again, not saying anything directly against DB because I don't know any of his teachings (I just saw this one). But I would encourage every listener to always, no matter the teacher, take the lesson and compare it to Scripture, including how they use verses to prove their points. The uses in this lesson were questionable.

In my humble opinion. I think if demons are everywhere, its easy to think, they know what's going to happen the next day. They can see that the army of the philistines are greater then Saul's army at this point. Saul no longer has Gods protection to win. The three sons are included in the battle. If the demon tells Saul his sons will get killed tomorrow as well as him, the battle is halfway won for the philistines because Saul will let this torment him. Saul has a history of demons tormenting him. They already know his weaknesses and knowing his sons will die just makes it worst. Why did God allow this battle to be Saul's end and let the demons be half right? (Saul was not killed, he committed suicide) because it was time and the demons knew it! Yet, not even the demons could predict how Saul would die. They do however know, that today they have little time left and are working harder to confuse the world with seductive ideas of sin. Its up to us to know our God and follow his teachings. Do not consult with mediums. They are demons period. God bless you all.

  • @willow9530
    @willow9530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

EGW take on this... Chapter 28. The Witch and Satan Had an Agreement-The witch of Endor had made agreement with Satan to follow his directions in all things; and he would perform wonders and miracles for her, and would reveal to her the most secret things, if she would yield herself unreservedly to be controlled by his Satanic majesty. This she had done (The Spirit of Prophecy 1:375, 376).8-19. Saul’s Final Step-When Saul inquired for Samuel, the Lord did not cause Samuel to appear to Saul. He saw nothing. Satan was not allowed to disturb the rest of Samuel in the grave, and bring him up in reality to the witch of Endor. God does not give Satan power to resurrect the dead. But Satan’s angels assume the form of dead friends, and speak and act like them, that through professed dead friends he can the better carry on his work of deception. Satan knew Samuel well, and he knew how to represent him before the witch of Endor, and to utter correctly the fate of Saul and his sons.Satan will come in a very plausible manner to such as he can deceive, and will insinuate himself into their favor, and lead them almost imperceptibly from God. He wins them under his control, cautiously at first, until their perceptibilities become blunted. Then he will make bolder suggestions, until he can lead them to commital most any degree of crime. When he has led them fully into his snare, he is then willing that they should see where they are, and he exults in their confusion, as in the case of Saul. He had suffered Satan to lead him a willing captive, and now Satan spreads before Saul a correct description of his fate. By giving Saul a correct statement of his end, through the woman of Endor, Satan opens away for Israel to be instructed by his satanic cunning, that they may, in their rebellion against God, learn of him, and by thus doing, sever the last link which would hold them to God.Saul knew that in this last act, of consulting the witch of Endor,he cut the last shred which held him to God. He knew that if he had not before willfully separated himself from God, this act sealed that separation, and made it final. He had made an agreement with death, and a covenant with hell. The cup of his iniquity was full (The Spirit of Prophecy 1:376, 377).

Martin Gonzalez ... I believe the dead “ know nothing “ of this world! Because the Bible is clear that the wicked have no Peace! And too many Scriptures show that the dead still are awake.. Moses on the mountain talking to Jesus..Jesus preaching to the spirits in prison.. the 24 elders in around the throne..our brothers under the altar talking to Jesus..

I have came to conclusion that we aren't supposed to reconcile or try to connect with the dead not because its not possible but because drew a line that we must not connect with the dead ..so this was Samuel but king Saul was not supposed to go to witches because he knew God himself told him to chase all unclean people the time they had good relationship
So let's only focus of God and do what he needs us to do in order to see his kingdom lets forget about this scripture because nobody is explaining it right and this scripture on its own it won't bring us closer to God 🙌

Help me to understand how the resurrection works without a soul? How can someone resurrect if they do not have a soul? Example, someone's body has been disintegrated in acid and is no more. How will that person resurrect if they do not have a soul to be put into a new body? The whole notion of resurrection requires some form of self-retention after death that will be put in a new body and be judged at the resurrection. Or else millions of completely destroyed, scattered, non-existent bones of humans won't be able to resurrect for judgement. So please, explain that?
Secondly, in the book "dictionary of early Christian beliefs" by David W. Bercot, it has all the ante-Nicene church leaders' sayings on all sorts of topics compiled into one dictionary. In there, I have not seen any early Christian deny that souls exist, they all agree they are not immortal and can be killed again but they all agree that the soul is a spiritual substance of a person that waits for the resurrection via Hades (a very Greek ideology).

Since there is still another 12 hours of waiting. I'll give you the short answer. "Did The Ghost Of Samuel Appear To Saul?" No!

I don't wish to argue with you. However, if I don't point out some errors I feel I would be doing a disservice to you. I will make an effort to keep it brief (as brief as I can) in attempt to not spark further debate.
First the question was, did he talk to his "ghost"?
Secondly that scripture you quoted, they were saying they wouldn't believe unless someone was risen from the dead. the reply to them was since you already don't listen, even if that happens you still won't listen.
Thirdly if someone has the street name of booger and you don't know their real name and you're writing to someone referring to them you might call them booger even though that's not what they really are.
Fourthly and most importantly. (The main reason for responding at all.) We do not "have" an immortal soul. As this is more important I'll give more references about this. God confirmed it when he said in Genesis 3:22 "[...] lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:" Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Not only is it a gift that we can receive but, why would God give eternal life to someone who is about to be consumed (to do away with completely) in fire. You get eternal life as a gift if you are raised in the first resurrection. Check out Luke 14:14.
The one thing all learned Christians can agree upon is that God is love. God bless you and yours friend.

@@EricSaavy the Bible says that Saul seeked out a woman with a familiar spirit. God did not want Saul to do that and the spirit that came up was not the spirit of Samuel. The state of the Dead is Ecclesiastes 9 verse 5. The dead know not anything. Go and read that because when Samuel died that was not him that came and spoke to Saul. Go and read your Bible about the state of the Dead

This poor man is fighting against the ineffable Word of God, with his own reasoning of why it couldn't had been Samuel when the word clearly said it was Samuel. As a matter of fact, everything that the "spirit of Samuel" said came to pass. Can demons prophesy?
