The answer is the Explorer 36. It is absolute perfection. The ultimate GADA and one-watch-collection. The Explorer 40 is just a tad too big for what it is, an all dial no date tool watch. With no date and all dial, you gotta size down to have better proportions and symmetry. If only the explorer 2 could return to 40mm!
You’re absolutely right. The dial is the same size as a submariner dial, so I always see the explorer as the “base” for everything Rolex ever did after that. Just add a functional bezel which makes the case bigger for a submariner/gmt/etc
The Sub dial is bigger than the expolrer, and the dial difference between Explorer I 36mm vs 40mm is 2mm, not just that the proportions of 40mm is actually better.
Good points. I personal prefer the Explorer 40 sizing as well as the current sizing of the Rolex Explorer II. They just feel more like a tool watch in these proportions in my mind. All amazing watches and I'm interested to see how it holds up against each other.
As someone who owns a Batman, Polar Explorer II and Starbucks, my vote is for the Explorer II. Imo, you get the most bang for buck with the GMT and Date complication. The all brushed bracelet and steel bezel fit every scenario from the boardroom to the mountains. It's also not super noticeable as a Rolex and that is also a huge plus. Regardless of your choice, I hope people who appreciate watches get access to the Rolex they desire. The brand has several negative and positive stereotypes, but I really do enjoy them on the wrist. Great content as always, thank you sir! Cheers!
Very good points, The Rolex GMT watches are great all around timepieces. Go any where do anything, in hiking boots or a suit jacket. I'll be the first to say I think my next Rolex purchase will be a GMT Master II, combine the Explorer II and Submariner. Cheers
@@cheynewalls You will not be disappointed with the GMT Master II. It was my first Rolex and I still absolutely love it! It just feels special and is still very robust. The only thing I would change is I wish I had got it on jubilee. I prefer the look on oyster and that's why I requested it, but I didn't know my next 2 pieces would also be on oyster. Just something to think about as your collection expands. Cheers.
I got the explorer 40 as I already had an oyster perpetual 36. I was worried at first but it was not too big for my 6.5" wrist. I then found out it's actually a 38.5mm watch.
A real Tool Watch in my opinion needs to have a date function. So there is the decision between the SUB and the EXP II. The SUB is the egg-laying jack of all trades between hard missions in deep waters and excellent luxury on the wirst at evening banquettes with a suite. When travelling round the world and staying in places where you can loose any feeling for time immediately, the GMT function of the last real Rolex tool watch, the Explorer II is that thing you don‘t wanna miss anymore. PROST! 😊
Yeah, that date function is a very nice feature. All great points and well put. I'm interested myself to see in what situations, which watch I will reach for when I have all three available. PROST!
I may be biased but I definitely have to say the Explorer II (just got mine a week and a half ago). Definitely seems to have the most “tool watch” look out of them all while still keeping with the Rolex luxury look. Just my thoughts!
I agree, Love my Rolex Explorer II and it has proven to be an outstanding watch over my two plus years of ownership. I'm interested to see how it holds up against each other.
Having both Explorer II polar and Explorer 40, like yourself. I believe explorer line is the best in the Rolex catalog. My favorite is the Explorer II !!! Great content, keep them coming!!!
I own all 3 models as well except my Exp 1 is the 36mm model. The comfort and light weight of the 36mm is light years ahead of the others. It’s also very low profile. I don’t miss the cyclops at all and the Exp 1 dial is super clean. The nice thing about going w the 36mm is it gives you a totally different feel than the 40-42mm sport pieces.
I fully agree, even my Rolex Explorer 40 has a beautiful elegance of comfort and light weight. Especially after wearing the Explorer II or Submariner. Cheers
Three absolute Goliath's right there. I have to give it to the EXII even though its not one that I like/want. Not a cyclops fan so the Sub would be the non date version for me.
Yeah its going to be interesting which comes out on top. I like the Rolex Explorer II does have that little advantage, like you said, Three Goliath's watches. Cheers

I would also rather see him use the same B-roll (that he did himself in amazing place) rather than B-roll from the watch website that EVERYONE else uses on their youtube videos.
I really like the Sea-Dweller, but it is just to big for me, plus like I mentioned in the video the Submariner Date shares that same movement as the Sea-Dweller, so just for my personal preference the smaller package Rolex Submariner fit me better.
Having owned the Sub, the explorer 36 and the Explorer 2 polar...... It's the submariner. The explorer 2 is right on its tail, but the sub is more practical w the rotating bezel, slightly more flexible size, and is a better GADA watch. The explorer 36 is a great GADA watch but falls flat on useful functions.
Yeah, I get it for something like that since a G-shock has an antenna to keep connected to the most accurate time. I'm not dealing with life or death and I'm always out in the wilderness, so the mechanic Rolex watches are a better fit more me since the battery always dies in my solar G-shock when I'm out snow camping or spend extended periods of time in sub-zero temps. Cheers
Great video. Although, I bet if you had your hands on one, you would eat your words about the Daytona. Sure, they are impossible to get, but a Daytona is the most robust vertical clutch column wheel chrono on the market. It has 100 meters, a screw down crown and pushers and the 4131 is as robus and accurate as any other Rolex movement. If you disagree, that's fine. But I'd love to know what you think is a better tool chrono.
I think you might be right. I’m just had hands on with the new Omega Dark Side of the Moon, and it was incredible. It a little big but day accurate 4 days in a row.
Explorer 36. By a large margin. It’s the perfect proportions. Light, gets out of the way, legible, tough, versatile. Does one job and does it well. That’s all you really need.
I really like the Sea-Dweller, but it is just to big for me, plus like I mentioned in the video the Submariner Date shares that same movement as the Sea-Dweller, so just for my personal preference the smaller package Rolex Submariner fit me better.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa.... Daytona, from an absolute tool perspective, is by far the best chronograph on the market, it isn't even close. Read up on the 413x movement. It's real deal, the best movement rolex have ever made.

@@aussieexpatwatches I'll be honest, If I had the chance the buy a Daytona from my AD I would over other chronographs. Great movement, perfect proportions an iconic watch.
