I just picked up my Explorer II black dial from an AD. After a long internal soul searching and debate, I realized that this watch is the best that fits my lifestyle. Not too fancy, but elegant, functional and exactly what I needed.
This watch looks and feels much better on a wrist than on photos. I stopped wearing my Datejust and Submariner after getting Explorer II and keep it on 24/7
True. And unfortunately a lot of people have made their mind up about a watch from the online pictures and comments before they ever go see it in person. I don’t watch shop online, and I feel like I can tell where the hype is because often I’ve seen them in person before I’ve seen what people (who likely haven’t seen them in person) are saying about them. For example, the Longines Spirit Zulu time is a beautiful looking watch. Which is why it caught my eye in the case, but within 2 seconds of holding it I could tell the bracelet felt like tin foil and the bezel was crunchy and had play, and just like that the magic was gone. Then at some point later I saw a thread where people were singing the praises of the Longines as the best midrange GMT over Tudor and even GS. In reality, most of those people are either parroting paid off TH-camrs or judging solely by the fact that the Longines looks prettier in pictures. That or they’re coping because they won’t or can’t save up to buy the watch they really wanted and have to justify a cheaper watch to themselves.
I’ve got the ref: 226570 in polar. I agree… hands down this is the best of the Rolex lineup. One of the things I like the most is that I’ve never seen another Explorer 2 in the wild. It’s a rare piece for one and many don’t like it. And that’s a big part of what totally does it for me. I think it’s beautiful and perfect.
Love my black dial Explorer 2. I saw an interesting video where they asked women about watches, and the one they hated most was the Explorer 2. It’s an extremely masculine watch with its steel bezel and modern size. It’s not a glamour queen, it’s not minimalist, it’s a tool, you either love it or hate it. I will say the black dial is a bit more versatile dressy than the white.
This is a great comment and got me thinking. My missus was not keen on the Ex2 but i bought it just the same. Perhaps this watch is popular with male watch enthusiasts but when your spending over eight K on a watch the over half's option can make you compromise on what watch you purchase. The ex2 is not for the pussy whipped. 🤣🤣
I love the tool watch component of the Explorer II. There’s 2 things that are personal preferences that turn me off though: the orange hand and the 42mm size. If it was back at 40mm with the red hand (or even blue or green) I would be all over it. Again, just my personal preferences.
Indeed, great tool watch components. It is interesting, I'm hearing that from a lot for viewers about preferring red hand or even blue or green. My personal preferences is that I love the orange GMT hand. Everyone is different, good thing we have a lot of options in the way of watches. Cheers
I have the black dial Explorer II from my local AD and daily the hell out of it. Have a 7.3” wrist so the dial size and lug-to-lug are perfect for me. I am also a pilot so the GMT hand is very useful when filing flight plans. SS bezel is a great difference from standard ceramic. Fantastic watch, best in person as pics do not quite do it justice.
I was debating on whether i should get the Exp II and the GMT II back in 2009. Back then the ExpII listed for $5,000 while the GMTII was about $7,500. So it was just $2,500 difference......but i really like th3 GMT II. It just nudged out the ExpII in looks while the Exp II was less flashy. Since this was to celebrate surviving a heart attack, 5 way bypass and heart valve repair........i just thought what the hell.......dropped the cash for the GMT II. Love that watch.
Yes it's a classic. 16570 40mm. Interesting, I'm here today in LA visiting my daughter, and my wife took a day trip to Long Beach. Suddenly this video pops up on my TH-cam. (?) Great photos!
Thank you, Yeah the Rolex Explorer II is a classic. Interesting, I wonder if it does have something to do with your location, since we are based in Laguna Beach about an hour oh so from LA. Good time to visit, beautiful weather. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Cheers
Your video well covered all the points regarding the superb Explorer ll and it's being a relatively unpopular Rolex. That aside, let's face it. The Original Explorer in 36mm covers all situations exceptionally well and often better than the ll. Wear it to the top of Everest or under your tuxedo sleeve at the Metropolitan opera. The Explorer is effortlessly at home. Not so the ll with it's white dial, large size and missing numerals. Add the Ian Fleming and the first conquest of Everest mystique to the Explorer 1 and let's just say, enough said.
The original Rolex Explorer is more versatile and is a lot different than the Explorer II, especial the Polar dial. Either way both are amazing watches, built to be similar, yet so different.
I just picked up an Explorer II a couple of weeks ago, black dial. I've had several Rolex divers in the past few years, but they never stick in the collection. Fortunately I pick them up at retail, so they usually leave a little cash behind when they leave. I would love to find one that blows my dress up, but so far... I think the Explorer II might be a keeper. I'm a tall and well-built guy, so a lot of the Rolex offerings look dainty on me. I see a lot of guys complain on forums that they find the Explorer II too large. I was actually debating if it was large enough to stay around (keep in mind I do have more than a dozen Panerai, so my version of small might be skewed). I had a DSSD for a while, but while the diameter was perfect, the thickness made it too chunky. I do like that the Explorer is not a "typical" Rolex. I am debating whether or not it is sufficiently "under-the-radar" to accompany me to dodgier places when I travel. I threw it on a high-end rubber strap (Zealande - two thumbs up for them!) immediately, so it loses the bracelet bling factor. The most useful complication for me is a GMT hand, so the Explorer definitely wins out over a dive bezel. I could see it joining me in all but the most unsafe places (sorry London, looking at you). Best of all it is putting my Grand Seikos to shame for accuracy. 16 days and it has lost just 2 seconds! It would be nice if those were gained instead, as the resyncing is much easier. However, 1/8 second a day, I think I can live with the more complicated resync. I also rotate through a large collection, so many watches need to be set when I pull them from the box.
The Rolex Explorer II is most definitely stay in my collection forever, for all the reason you mentioned and a lot I can't get over how tough this watch is. I have broken Omegas, Breitlings, Hamilton and G-shocks when I'm out in the field. Not my Explorer II, takes a hit and keeps on ticking. Cheers
7:28 your spot on! For the price it’s truly a do it all tool watch for any situation including most of the water activities a submariner could do. People think in the short term but 10k divided by 50 years is 17 dollars a month. It’s truly a watch you can have for life then like you said pass it on to your kids. I own 3 Rolex and the explorer II is probably specs and price wise the best Rolex with the most bang for the buck. Same movment as a gmt master II for less than a submariner
It's my favorite Rolex and my Daily wear watch! The 42mm size is a downside for some, but for me and my 8" wrist it's perfect! The only thing that would make it better would be the glidelock clasp, but I make due. :0
Hi I'm agree with you I have a 8 1/2 in wrist and 41mm is the smallest watch I own so 42mm is a great size the only problem with Rolex is all the bracelet s are one link to small so I have to buy a extra link every time I buy a Rolex watch. which is a bit annoying as you pay £16000 for a new watch and they won't give you an extra link and they charge you £200 per link maybe there's not enough profit in a new Rolex to give your customers a free link for the small amount of people who have big wrists 😂😂😂
@@JohnBowman-ut4dz no doubt.. I had to buy an extra link for my 216570 so I could wear it on the bracelet too. Plus, anytime I buy an older watch on the secondary market I always have to hunt down an extra link or two.
@@JohnBowman-ut4dz haha, They aren't giving you an extra link? Oh man talk to your AD about that. I have an "average" wrist of 7" and I take a link or two off, but my buddy is similar to you and Rolex has never charged him for that extra link or two.
@@cheynewallsdoes an SD43 glidelock bracelet fit this case? For example, the original Tudor Black Bay 39mm came with the non T-Fit bracelet with the faux rivets. But the work around is ordering a Tudor Ranger bracelet, which does not have the faux rivets and does have the T-Fit glide clasp.
Hi Cheyne, you are so right! The last real ROLEX tool watch, that's exactly what the Explorer II is all about. If I had to make up the choice for one watch taking with me for travelling around the world I decided myself für my EXP II polar. Always under the radar, second time zone, exactly fitting my big wrist and absolutely enough water resistance. And beeing not so popular even it's a real beauty really is a big advantage: You are the only one in a radius of lots and lots of miles wearing exactly this wonderful time peace. Many greetings from Germany, PROST! 🙂
Well said! I always wear my Rolex Explorer II when I travel and even if its a horrible travel experience I still very much enjoy looking at my Rolex Explorer II. Its funny, I missed my connecting flight in Amsterdam and had to wait over night in the airport as a standby. Still had a smile on my face as it was fun to see every time that orange GMT hand looking back at me when I checked the time. PROST!
I got my Sub Date in 2021. I knew soon after that I’d want to add the Polar Explorer II for great contrast to my collection. It took much longer to get the Polar, there is plenty of demand, and Rolex definitely does not ship as many of these as other models. Your videos were great to watch as I waited to get mine. I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, the size to me is perfect, definitely not to big, it fits my sweet spot. I’ve had it for 2 months now, it has rarely left my wrist. It’s so versatile. The accuracy has been the best I’ve seen. In 2 months, it has gained 2 seconds. It’s more accurate than some quartz watches I own. It was 100% worth the wait, and a definite keeper in my collection along with my Sub Date. 2 tool watches that both contrast and compliment each other so well. As far as the comments on “nitch” vs “niche”, it’s a regional pronunciation. In the northeast, most people I know call it “nitch” as well. Keep up the great work! I enjoy your videos and subscribed. Looking forward to more.
I love this watch too. I have a big wrist so works for me. I wore my Submariner every day for 10 years but this is now my daily! I also like the fact that it is not popular!
Great vid for a great watch. Remarkable great and insightful opinions and input in this comment section. It seems you are attracting true watch lovers and not flipper suckers. Congrats for that and the vid.
Hello Cheyne, Just wanted to say that thanks to your reviews specifically and how they tackle the important stuff regarding their actual usage rather than just specs… I bought this watch and honestly for me, it feels complete and just gorgeous… I had a starbucks submariner and also a blue date-just… non of them gave me the feel as this one has… The polar dial is just a thing of beauty, and as you mentioned in another video the watch is very legible, and so I’m enjoying to the best of my abilities. But again many thanks!
Thank you RJ. I agree the Rolex Explorer II with the polar dial is an amazing watch in a lot of ways. Great looking rough and tumble watch, might be my favorite in the collection. Cheers
Thanks, yeah we will have fun content coming out soon on my new Rolex Explorer 40mm as I compare it to the Explorer II, both as an everyday and out in the field on my photography adventures.
Fun video, I enjoyed that! Love the rolex explorer 2 and your videos on it, excited to see the new watch next week and how it holds up to extreme conditions you put your watches through. Thank you for the great content.
I have been trying to get an Explorer 2 ( polar dial) for over 2 years from 2 different AD's. No luck. They tell me that they are not getting many in. And I have purchased 2 Rolexes from them in the past couple of years. Maybe someday I'll get "The Call". Not holding my breath.
I would disagree this being unpopular, but do understand that one would find it difficult to come across this watch in the wild. My theory is, the sub, gmt master 2, daytona, explorer 1, datejusts are perfect contenders for a one watch person. Once they go down the rabbit hole, they realize they want more specific watches for specific occasions. I believe that is why you find so many of these one watch collections on the secondary market. Larger cases I believe also scares one watch collectors off because many flippers market the one watch contender watches as the best size, obviously not mentioning best watch for what, and hype the one watch contender watches so they can resale, but when you start searching for specific watches for specific occasions, the subs dial size could feel a bit small for hiking etc.
It's the size and bezel that keep this watch from exploding in popularity. However, if this comes out in Titanium, I think it will be incredibly popular. It would be even better if it gets back to 40mm or even 41mm like the new sub.
Depending on how the Ti Yachtmaster sells, this would be a good model to make in Ti. 40mm would also be a win. Don't expect anything for a decade though. The current Exp 2 just came out a couple of years ago.
@@saodavi6267 This is so true regarding the latest upgrade of the ExII. The Ti Yacht Master has been extremely rare to come by and seems production is really low at the moment. This could help Rolex with their move upmarket as well tho. The Titanium offering will be more expensive than SS.
Hi Cheyne, The Explorer 2 is a watch that just gets the job done and really is a tool and I think this is the reason for its lack of popularity. The other Rolex big hitters are looked upon as show watches
Hmmm I think the biggest reason as to why the modern Explorer II isn't more popular is due to its size. I was dead set on wanting to get the #226570 (same as yours) but once I tried it on it just felt far, far too big and so I opted for the #16570 with the 3186 movement. I do agree with you in regards to the Explorer I - it's definitely more 'storied' vs the Explorer II BUT I still get more of an action/adventure/exploring vibe from the Explorer II's.... Great vid 🙂
Thanks, Yes, I hear that from a lot of people about the sizing. Great call with the #16570. I agree that the Rolex Explorer II has an amazing call to action/adventure and exploring vibe, but it was interesting doing the research for this video. To use a car analogy, it reminds me a lot of the Porsche 911 (Explorer) and Caymen (Explorer II). Both spectacular cars, but Porsche favors the 911 with advertising, more options, and just over-shading the Caymen, making it seem like the 911 is the better option. I feel Rolex is doing the same, if that make scene. Cheers
I think the reason is a bit different. I think how it started is not that important, but how it evolved is. Everything you, and I for that matter, like about this watch works against it with the general Rolex buying public. An average Rolex buyer is a while collar type, an analyst or middle manager in a tech company or an investment bank or in insurance. And most of them buy a Rolex as a status symbol. People why buy tool watch vibes and are nostalgic for 5-digit Rolex are a big minority of Rolex customers. A new Rolex today is closer in vibe and esthetic to Cartier Santos than it is to Rolex tool watches from 20 years ago or more. Important to note I'm not talking about capabilities here, new Submariner can be used to storm Normandy and jump from a 10meter cliff into a frozen like and it will keep ticking without interruptions, just like Explorer II, I'm only talking about looks. All the other models evolved in the direction of preppiness, pretentiousness, a more luxurious vibe. More polished surfaces, more shininess, ceramic bezel inserts. Rolex watches are as durable as ever, but no one is buying them for that. And Rolex is right to push this, cuz this is where the money is. And Explorer II is the black sheep of the family, it didn't evolve in this direction. Meaning it is not even a consideration for the majority of Rolex buyers. Edit: I'll add that Explorer II gives off low status vibes to non watch people, and if there is something upper middle class hates it is gadgets and jewelry that look like lower status
ROLEX HEAR ME :) ...The polar explorer IMHO has two glaring design flaws -- both are pet peeves for me. The amount of black on the hands way outweighs the distributed amount of black around the hour markers. In my mind, it should be more balanced. Also - the center of the hands is this big dark circle/dot (visually speaking). To balance things out, I think that should be colored white using the same material as the dial.
I think you are referring to the older reference number 216570. Rolex did do away big dark circle/dot (floating hands) with the current model. Either way I do agree its not the best looking watch in aesthetics, but I think so good looking as a tool watch.
Its an amazing watch. Even after two years I pretty much wear it every day. I have to force myself to take it off, thinking long term to give it a break now and then from the hell I put it through. Spread out the wear and tear, Cheers
So I have a story. I actually won this watch I'm a competition. It was second prize to my dream watch which is a sky dweller. I intended to sell it to fund purchase of a sky dweller. But when I put it on my wrist I feel in love, it is the white dial BTW. The other thing though and I tell everyone this. I'm not an ostentatious person. What I love about this watch is that most people don't know that it is a Rolex. But if you know you know and every now and then people recognise it and if they do they are probably a true enthusiast and that to me is cool. 🙏🏻
Sorry pal but the previous version was the pinnacle of the Explorer 2. The 16570 polar model is just utter perfection and yes I’ve never seen another person wearing it. The 40mm size is just perfect. I find the dial symmetry of the new model to be a touch off but do like the black dial version. My Explorer 2 is scratched to all heck and has a chipped crystal. Looks so badass.
Reason it’s not popular is firstly because of the steel bezel. It lacks any pop or bling…looks boring to many people. Secondly, if you scratch or ding the bezel, it will be cost a lot to fix or replace the bezel. With the ceramic bezel, it gives the watch a pop and is virtually scratch proof. Sure you can break the ceramic bezel but the chances are extremely low.
It’s not as popular for a few reasons, the main one being the size. At 42mm half of watch collectors are sized out because it’s too big, hence there is half the demand and reason the prices are not sky high. Secondly it’s not flashy, many people buy a Rolex to flex and the Explorer II just isn’t a flashy watch. Final factor and similar to my second point, it does not include a ceramic bezel which is a signature feature many people want when buying a Rolex. As such I think it’s the third or fourth choice and personally speaking I only added it to my collection after I’d picked up a DJ41 and Submariner. However it’s my second favourite Rolex after my Explorer 40. 😊
Wish it was a bit smaller - maybe 40 or 41mm. Wish it had an adjustable clasp - how is Tudor outclassing Rolex on this, especially at this price point??? Glide Lock should be a standard feature on all Rolex sport models. Wish it didn't have the male end link. And i wish the bezel text was a bit smaller / less bold; it is a bit visually overpowering. That said, the high-contrast dial/hands, color scheme, and general design language are perfect.
Tudor makes a great watch, but I wouldn't say they are "outclassing" Rolex. After wear the Black Bay Pro for a few months, I very much enjoyed it, but I have to say the comfort, feel and fit of the Rolex Explorer II is just in a different class. Either way tho, hard to go wrong with these watches.
Other than the exorbitant price, the main issue with the current Explorer II is that it's just too big. The older model in its 40mm case size was perfect. Regardless, I still feel the polar Explorer II is one of the best looking watches in Rolex's catalogue. That stark white dial with those contrasting black hands and the stainless steel bezel just looks incredible.
Always enjoy your videos, fellow Exp II brother here - For those feeling the watch is too big, the black face tones the size of the watch down significantly. the Polar gets more hype but in everyday wear, black is going to be smaller wearing and more versatile. Also, this watch is quite thin given the size so it slips under a cuff easily. It does not feel chunky and the brushed steel bracelet is best in the biz. If you want to wear / experience what rolex was like 50 years ago, this watch is it. only guys that value the OG tool nature of the brand instead of the status symbol go for the Exp II. It's a modern classic.
Thank you. Yeah very good point, the black dial really gives the sense of a smaller watch and since it is so thin it does wear very very nicely. Cheers to a modern classic!
I never got over that damn Orange! I wish it was red, the size is perfect for me, but so many times I wanted to pull the trigger but I can’t get it to it.
Oh man, I love that orange! In my mind it makes it even for unique, I wasn't the biggest fan when it was just sharing the red GMT hand from the GMT-Master II.
I picked my Explorer 2 up in February. If I had bought this Watch before my other Rolex's I would not have purchased the others. This watch is all you need.
I think the reason I really like it is the same reason it’s not more popular: it’s a Rolex that doesn’t jump out as being a Rolex. I’m afraid a lot of folks that buy a Rolex want it to scream “HEY…LOOK AT ME…I HAVE A ROLEX!”. The Explorer & Explorer II simply don’t do that. I love the Explorer II but the current model is unfortunately too big for my wrist. Someday I’ll have a 16570.
I have the same size issue but the 16570 is a great pick. But I also love the 124270. To date the Explorer one is my most traveled watch. Simply because it dissapears but as a daily my Polar. Both are great pics
@@deskdiversthlm Thanks! Great advice; you have some beautiful watches there! My daily for the past 2 years has been my BB58 blue. I think I’d love a 124270.
@@cheynewalls hi thanks for your reply only been on the list for this one for six months it took 18 months to get my buy metal sea dweller and on the list for green bezel submariner but it might take two years to get that one.i think the explorer 2 might take about 1 year.thanks john (from UK)
Yeah a 6.5" wrist that is right about the lower range of the Rolex Explorer II, (in my option). It will look huge to you after all those years of wearing the 36mm 124270 :) Who knows, go try one on.
I would say a 6.5” wrist would be the low end for sure, but doable. Try one on and don’t miss out on this perfect watch. My wrist is slightly below 7”, so I was concerned my 226570 polar would be too big when I got the call. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s ‘purposely’ large by design and wears so damn well. I know the ‘this watch is too big for me feeling’ that just grinds away at you in the honeymoon period. I’ve tried the Seamaster 300m twice and just couldn’t get past that feeling. From day one, this has not been a thought for even a second with my 226570.
Really! Wow that is the opposite of what my and other ADs as well as people I have spoken with are saying. I'm hearing 3 to 6 months for the black dial and 9 to 18 months for the Polar. Also to they make about double the number of black dial as they do Polar dials. Thanks for the info.
@@cheynewalls I’m in KSA so things may be a little different here. They’re bustling with OPs, DateJust and Day Dates, but seriously lacking in the steel sport models. Thanks for the reply and the great content 👏
@@grahamwatts368 It is so interesting, such huge discrepancies in different parts of the country. Steel Rolex sport watches are hard to come by anywhere, but to be bustling with OPs, DateJust and Day Dates. That is crazy. Thanks again for the info, Cheers
Minas this watch and only sold it because I got the GMT Master II GRNR one of the most perfect watches. Now that they are selling for retail and below brand new, time to get it again…..
GMT Master II GRNR is a great watch, if you can find it for below retail I would go for it. I'm hearing from a lot of folks there is still a 6 to 18 months wait at Ads and at my local watch shop, they're selling a new Explorer II for $ 13,100.
@@cheynewalls Explorer II I got offered just last week for retail. One was 2022 and one 2024 but certainly depends where you are located. My 126713 GRNR is lovely but I agree with you. Retail or below is the going rate at the moment.
I think the Explorer II white dial is totally awesome. But unfortunately, it’s less popular because to the general public it’s plain and boring looking, especially since it’s not flashy. The submariner, gmt master, and daytona have more going on and are flashier, meaning that they’re more visually interesting.
Here in Germany i do not get one . I visited 5 Rolex Dealers and by all of them i am on a waiting list. To estimate: I get my Explorer in about a year.
I have the previous reference 216570 in black with the ghost hands, I also have a Sub Date 16610. Both watches have a difference feel, of the two watches I'm edging towards the Explorer II. The watch is more invisible than the Sub, very rare does anyone comment on it I really like this. I swim with the Explorer II also, and take it into steam rooms! At first I got hung up on the twin-lock over the subs trip-lock, but learnt not to worry and trust the twin-lock.
Not as flashy as other Rolex model, not having ceramic bezel, bulky 42mm. This watch is great but i mean it is too expensive to have a tool watch if you are considering why most of the rolex customer buying a Rolex watch for. They cant show off with this one.
The reason why I'm not like so much th Explorer II 226570 is that I own an Explorer II - 1655 reference. And the comparison is pitiful, it's clearly a stylistic involution. If Rolex 1655 had never existed Explorer II 226570 would be very cool in my opinion.
Possibly the Explorer ii is less popular because it's seen as less versatile compared to other models. You can wear a Submariner with t-shit and jeans or a tux. The Explorer ii? Not so much
Haha, that’s a clever one! Rolex does have a way of creating watches that feel equally at home on an adventure or at the mall. Maybe "The Shop-Master" would come with a built-in receipt tracker and shopping bag holder! 😄 Thanks for the laugh-I’ll stick to enjoying their timeless versatility for now.
I’ve owned and sold it.. calling it the best is a stretch. For starters the crown being so small is just frustrating, and the stumpy hour hand is also another proportionally incorrect element.. it feels like those things were done on purpose to make you desire the gmt master more. The sizing is just too big, it wears larger than 42, so for most people it’s too large. Don’t get me wrong I love this watch, but it’s far from the best
Oh, I agree its not the best looking watch, but I'm more of a function over form. And it just looks like a tool watch, I hear that a lot with the crown being so small, I prefer a smaller crown as well as the 42mm sizing. Again its just such a tool watch that does look a little silly. The new Submariner and GMT are too pretty, the Rolex Explorer II has a vintage down and dirt look. Love that about this watch. Cheers
@@cheynewalls I definitely prefer the chunkier crown of a Tudor when it comes too toolish-ness .. but they could have at least done the gmt master size. Again, I think it’s on purpose. Form definitely follows function with a tool watch, the crown being a pretty critical component in my view.. but I can see why you love it, I did too, but eventually went a GMT master.. even the exp2 is quite pretty and shiny anyway, they’re all Rolexes at the end of the day.. get a g shock if you want rugged imo
@@TradeMarcmultimedia Hi hear what you are saying, but the crown being to small its a "critical component" it works fine it just looks small and maybe a bit out of proportions. As a tool watch I feel the Rolex Explorer II is far better than a G-shock. In the time that I have owned my Explorer, I have broken 2 G-shocks. The G-shocks can't stand up to our snow camping expeditions. Batteries always go flat and the plastic becomes brittle. No issue for the Explorer , Cheers
@@cheynewalls interesting to learn about the colder conditions for the g shock.. I wonder if they have a model that tackles that issue. Good that you have found a fit for your use case though, enjoy it, I did love mine
I thought so too, but according to the 4 ADs of Rolex I've talked to, the black dial version sells 3 to 1 over the Polar version. Also Rolex produces more black dial versions than Polar dial.
The Christopher Ward 39mm C63 Sealander is a good watch, but can't really hold a candle to the Rolex Explorer II except for its looks. The Sellita SW200-1 movement in the Ward is no-wear near as good as the 3285, Manufacture Rolex.
I agree that it is one of the least popular, but not sure about unpopular. Anyway why does it matter? Doesn’t it mean that the that people really want it can get it? Rather than spending two years on a wait list? From a popularity point of view the spend vs what you get, it make sense to get a submariner if you really want to show that you have a Rolex. Esp since price point is in the same range. By the way; is that the ”big brother” that went up a mountain that you had there? Oh well only time will tell I guess 😉
@@cheynewalls this is true, but the limited popularity is in part what makes it so good. For me the later editions are just too large on the wrist but do love my 16570. Never meant to go OWG but my other pieces have been put aisde for a long time now. Looking forward to next week.
I dispute the premise of your video. It is an inaccurate claim. This is one of the MOST popular watches in the catalogue. It is also one of the least expensive in the range of watches produced by Rolex, aside from the OP and the Air-King. I have it on very good authority, from a friend and colleague that spent 11 years with the gold crown, working in marketing and media buying, that the Explorer II has out-sold the GMT Master II in some years between 2010-2022. The model is more than 52 years old and persists for a reason and a lack of popularity is the furthest from an accurate depiction or narrative of the model. [EDIT] You also claim that EII is the least produced SS watch, that information is not publicly disclosed, ergo, that claim is specious. The number of watches produced and the number sold is classified and it is only down to pure speculation on the part of AD testimonials and watch journalists. I know this very well, since I spent a number of years as a journalist in the luxury sector following these same speculative narratives. I also want to point out that your experience of not observing EII 'out in the wild' is anecdotal. I live between Asia and Europe and I can tell you that your experience is, seemingly confined to a narrow geography.
Thanks you for your in-depth comment, All my information put forth in the video was from a year of research, talking with sales people from 8 Rolex ADs all over the world and interviews with two current Rolex employees and one retired employee within their head offices (art collector of mine). I understand a lot of this isn't public knowledge, I did my best to piece enough information together for this video. Like I mentioned in the video, just simplifying it all down. Over the last 4 or 5 years I have seen hundreds of GMT Master II , OPs, Daytonas, Submariners, Day-Dates, Airkings, Date-Justs, Yacht-Masters, Sky-Dewellers and Sea-Dewellers on peoples wrists out in "the wild". I still to this day have never seen a Rolex Explorer II Polar "the wild". That is why I did this video, now again how much Rolex produces and or sells is not public knowledge, but all the stats I mentioned where specified by at least 2 ADs sales people, a current Rolex employee and my collector, the retired Rolex employee.
Love the looks of the Explorer II, but the idea of Rolex being compelled to make a watch theme for people in a cave needing to know whether it's daylight or dark outside is comical. And let's get real, 11 out of 10 spelunkers are wearing a cheap Casio.
Well back in the day when this watch came out a lot of cave explorers wore this watch. I'm not sure how handy the knowing day or night function was, but the toughness of this watch made it a go to wristwatch with explorers in-general. You would be surprised, I'm not an expert spelunkers, but when I was lucky enough to photograph an exploration of a recently undiscovered cave formations, some of the spelunkers had G-shocks, but I also spotted two Rolex Explorer IIs, a few Submariners and an Explorer.
It’s just heritage at this point. But the Explorer II was first issued before quartz, so at the time your options were mechanical or automatic. And the high end production watches lent themselves more to exploring/active lifestyles because it’s easy to make a decent looking mechanical dress watch when accuracy isn’t critical because the wearer can just set it to the clock tower every day, and complications aren’t really necessary. But when it’s 1950 and you’re going over the horizon on a sailboat, or on a thousand kilometer hike across the Yukon… you need an accurate watch and probably some extra task-specific functionality. And if your only option is an automatic watch, that’s where Rolex came in.
If only, Yeah Rolex just doesn't make very many of the Explorer II, and it is a popular watch within a small group (me included). Therefor there is a waiting list.
1. it's too big and chunky for most people. I really love the design of the watch but miss the old 5 digit reference size. 2. it's probably their most tooly watch, which is fine, but most people buying a rolex are buying jewellery, so a datejust/daydate, submariner or gmt etc are probably better suited for those reasons, even though the gmt and sub are tooly - they are still shiny pieces of jewellery. 3. it's a $10k tool watch, you could just get a very good g-shock and have an arguably better suited watch. or even a Tudor for a 4th of the price if you really want a luxury watch as a "tool watch".
It’s because most “men” don’t have wrists big enough to wear the Polar E2. I’m 6’5” 250# and it wears like a dream. Let the little boys keep their little boy watches 😂
Perhaps its because in white looks more cheap than a submariner or a date just, tosporty for rich customer, and unknkow for comun people so dont have interest for people who buy rolex because they want to be recognize as rolex customer...
Its funny, I hear that a lot. I'm of the opinion its the perfect size for a tool watch. Given I have a wrist over 7 inches so it might fit me better than others, but still I like my tool watches on the bigger size, really feel like you have a tool on the wrist. Cheers
I understand there is a long wait list, but like I said in the the video, Rolex is not making very many Explorer II, that is why. Yes a good small group of people want one, its still only a minuscule number compared to the Submariner, GMT, Daytona or other Rolex models. Cheers
@@cheynewalls I agree, but in context of whole Rolex catalog, were there are 50+ models, I still thinks explorer 2 is in first 10 models on wishlist. Nobody wants datejust, or some 36mm but explorer, I know a lot of guys that wants. All the best
@@igorr2d2 Good point, I thought the same before doing the research for this video. We have to remember Rolex is a big global company and the US is not the biggest market. Datejust & 36mm watches are in huge demand in Asia and other parts of the world. Cheers
I agree that it's probably their best model since it's relatively understated and a good value all things considered.... that said, I find the concept of a "tool watch" in 2024 to be cringe. Your phone, a smartwatch, etc all tell the time more accurately and cheaper. Wearing a watch in 2024 is a form of expression, I wouldn't boil that down to a tool... certainly not in the five figure territory to get one.
Well it depends how you use it, I talk about it in my other video that when I'm out in the field photographing I'm gone for weeks at a time and don't have access to re-charge my cell phone or a smart watch. Also I do a lot of camping in sub zero temps, my cell phone and smart watches battery go flat. Therefor I need a good mechanical tool watch, because my cell phone and pretty much anything with a rechargeable is useless to on these kind of excursions. As for the pricing, yes they are expensive, but you are paying for craftsmanship that if taken care of will last decades upon decades. Cheers
I just picked up my Explorer II black dial from an AD. After a long internal soul searching and debate, I realized that this watch is the best that fits my lifestyle. Not too fancy, but elegant, functional and exactly what I needed.
Congrats, you will love it! An amazing watch, Cheers
I can really relate to this, my AD called me and I put off going in for over week, internally debating what to do!
This watch looks and feels much better on a wrist than on photos. I stopped wearing my Datejust and Submariner after getting Explorer II and keep it on 24/7
Good point, video and photos don't do this watch justice.
Same. By far my favorite watch.
Well put, I agree 100%, killer watch. Cheers
I love your Explorer II content, Explorer II Owner here 🙌🏾
Thank you, Cheers
Love my black dial Explorer 2. I saw an interesting video where they asked women about watches, and the one they hated most was the Explorer 2. It’s an extremely masculine watch with its steel bezel and modern size. It’s not a glamour queen, it’s not minimalist, it’s a tool, you either love it or hate it. I will say the black dial is a bit more versatile dressy than the white.
A 100% the black dial you can dress up a bit better. Thank you for sharing that about the video, makes me like the Rolex Explorer II even more. Cheers
Excellent comment. 👌
🤣🤣
I feel the Exp 2 is one of the last true tool watches left from Rolex
I 100% agree with this! Everything else seems like jewelry now
I 100% agree
it is.
Yes 🙌
Because it is.
Love my black face 226570. Great weight, not shouty, but those who know know. Keeps good time and fits well. keep up the great vids!
Cheers
Agreed, an amazing watch. Cheers
The GMT-Master is an amazing watch. Cheers
Yes it's a classic. 16570 40mm. Interesting, I'm here today in LA visiting my daughter, and my wife took a day trip to Long Beach. Suddenly this video pops up on my TH-cam. (?)
Great photos!
Thank you, Yeah the Rolex Explorer II is a classic. Interesting, I wonder if it does have something to do with your location, since we are based in Laguna Beach about an hour oh so from LA. Good time to visit, beautiful weather. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Cheers
Cheers Mate. :-)
Were you on a wait list before you purchased your Explorer II? If so, how long? Thanks!
Yes, I got my Rolex Explorer II just over two years ago and I was on a waiting list for 6 months. Cheers
Couldn't have said it better myself. Cheers
It's my favorite Rolex and my Daily wear watch! The 42mm size is a downside for some, but for me and my 8" wrist it's perfect! The only thing that would make it better would be the glidelock clasp, but I make due. :0
Yeah, the perfect watch if it had that glidelock system. Cheers
@@JohnBowman-ut4dz haha,
They aren't giving you an extra link?

Great to hear all of that, thank you for sharing. Those watches go well together in a collection. Cheers
I love this watch too. I have a big wrist so works for me. I wore my Submariner every day for 10 years but this is now my daily! I also like the fact that it is not popular!
Yeah, I have never seen anyone else wearing a Rolex Explorer II (new model) out in the wild. It is such a great watch, Cheers
Great vid for a great watch.
Remarkable great and insightful opinions and input in this comment section.
It seems you are attracting true watch lovers and not flipper suckers.
Congrats for that and the vid.
Thank you for that. Cheers
The unpopularity of this watch is all the more reason I recently purchased my 226570. Thanks for all your great reviews on this beautiful watch.
Thanks, yeah its an amazing watch, love my Rolex Explorer II. Cheers
Hello Cheyne,
Just wanted to say that thanks to your reviews specifically and how they tackle the important stuff regarding their actual usage rather than just specs…
I bought this watch and honestly for me, it feels complete and just gorgeous…
I had a starbucks submariner and also a blue date-just… non of them gave me the feel as this one has…
The polar dial is just a thing of beauty, and as you mentioned in another video the watch is very legible, and so I’m enjoying to the best of my abilities.
But again many thanks!
Thank you RJ. I agree the Rolex Explorer II with the polar dial is an amazing watch in a lot of ways. Great looking rough and tumble watch, might be my favorite in the collection. Cheers
I have the submariner hulk, I have a thing for green. But I am looking to get another Rolex thats not green. Definitely keeping an eye on your channel
Thanks, yeah we will have fun content coming out soon on my new Rolex Explorer 40mm as I compare it to the Explorer II, both as an everyday and out in the field on my photography adventures.
I agree with what you said. Only a few rolex watches that I would buy. Explorer 2, Milgauss, Root beer, Air King.
A very good set.
Fun video, I enjoyed that! Love the rolex explorer 2 and your videos on it, excited to see the new watch next week and how it holds up to extreme conditions you put your watches through. Thank you for the great content.
Thank you Ian, I'm very much looking forward to putting this new watch to the test. Cheers
@@cheynewalls awesome!!
Definitely an under rated Rolex, but would love to have one, especially the Polar!! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching! I do enjoy how underrated the Rolex Explorer is, such a great watch. Cheers
I hope so, fingers crossed for you. Its that Rolex just are not making very many Explorer II watches anymore.
It was through discussing this exact piece that I realized we are both clients at that exact same AD here in SoCal😮
@@Buzzsaw Fun to hear, nothing but good things to say about that Rolex AD. Cheers
Very good point, thinking about it that makes prefect scenes. Thank you for that well thought out input. Cheers
Love the Exp 2 content, and you hit it on the head! I’ll never sell mine either
Thank you, Indeed, It is such a great watch and I'm not evening going to sell it when it becomes a classic and is worry 10x what I paid. :)
The black Rolex Explorer 2 has always been my favourite Rolex.
Its a great watch!
It's the size and bezel that keep this watch from exploding in popularity.
However, if this comes out in Titanium, I think it will be incredibly popular. It would be even better if it gets back to 40mm or even 41mm like the new sub.
Very good point, if Rolex switched it to Titanium that would interesting. Cheers
Hey, great vid. At what number should this watch be selling at brand new?
Thanks, I think it is still selling above retain on the grey market.
Hi Cheyne,
The Explorer 2 is a watch that just gets the job done and really is a tool and I think this is the reason for its lack of popularity.
The other Rolex big hitters are looked upon as show watches
I 100% agree with you on that Dale. I love the Rolex Explorer II being just a down and dirty tool watch. Cheers
Cheers
Well then you have tiny wrist thats all.
@@jcnole77 It is all personal preference.
I agree, I was trying to get that same point across in the video.
Love my 226570. Just got it a few months ago and rarely take it off. Also love that it’s off the grid. Subs are iconic, but a snooze fest
@@PeterGill1 indeed, I love that most people don’t realize it’s a Rolex watch. Cheers
Got this for every day. When I want to be flashy I got a DateJust flutted index in jubilee for the dressy times.
Well played, Cheers
Sorry pal but the previous version was the pinnacle of the Explorer 2. The 16570 polar model is just utter perfection and yes I’ve never seen another person wearing it. The 40mm size is just perfect. I find the dial symmetry of the new model to be a touch off but do like the black dial version.
My Explorer 2 is scratched to all heck and has a chipped crystal. Looks so badass.
Love the look of a beat up Rolex Explorer. Yeah the 16570 is a great model.
I have the newest E2 and I have never seen anyone wearing one in Houston. I love mine, it’s my daily watch.
It is an amazing watch, I'm still so surprised that after two years I have only seen one other person wearing a Rolex Explorer II in public. Cheers
Bingo. The general public sees it as boring. Unfortunately
Good points, I just love that it keep the steel bezel. But I'm in the minority.
I agree with all your points above. They are all the reasons I love it.
Well put! I agree
Looks great on your wrist! You can change your channel name to Rolex explorer fan club. Would still follow 😂❤
Love my Rolex Explorer II.
Yeah, That stark white dial with those contrasting black hands is a great look and very functional.
Interesting answer you give! Cool video.
Thank you! Cheers
Cheers to that!
I agree with that, love the Explore line being simple and understated. The 16570 are great watches.
@@chriscon8463 The blue BB58 is amazing. One of the best Tudor has made in my opinion.
It's my daily.... sold the 36mm Explorer to get it. Much more interesting and rare... right up my street
I feel the same about the Explorer II. Cheers
My AD called today and I am picking up my 226570 this weekend. I opted for the black dial.
Hey Congratulation! You will love it, Cheers
congrats! I also opted for the black dial and haven't once regretted that decision.
Hi it a great watch hope the Rolex ad gives me the call soon thanks John.
I'm planning to sell my new black Explorer 2 on Reddit, if you're interested let me know.
You will love it, how long have you been waiting for it?
@@cheynewalls hi thanks for your reply only been on the list for this one for six months it took 18 months to get my buy metal sea dweller and on the list for green bezel submariner but it might take two years to get that one.i think the explorer 2 might take about 1 year.thanks john (from UK)
@@JohnBowman-ut4dz Thank you for that info! I'm getting a lot of questions from viewers on that.
I wear an explorer every day (36mm 124270). I really want to get a modern explorer ii polar but it might be a little big on my wrist (6.5inch).
Yeah a 6.5" wrist that is right about the lower range of the Rolex Explorer II, (in my option). It will look huge to you after all those years of wearing the 36mm 124270 :) Who knows, go try one on.
@@cheynewalls the explorer ii is just such a great and functional design. The polar is certainly the color I prefer
@@Spartacus-hc9xt an amazing functional design.
My AD has a polar in stock but I prefer the black dial. Unfortunately 6 to 12 month wait for the black ☹️
Really! Wow that is the opposite of what my and other ADs as well as people I have spoken with are saying. I'm hearing 3 to 6 months for the black dial and 9 to 18 months for the Polar. Also to they make about double the number of black dial as they do Polar dials. Thanks for the info.

I agree, The looks of the Rolex Explorer II are its greatest attribute, but also it's downfall in the current watch market. Cheers
Here in Germany i do not get one . I visited 5 Rolex Dealers and by all of them i am on a waiting list. To estimate: I get my Explorer in about a year.
Interesting, Danke, for that information. It is different all over the world. Prost

@@BoomerUKEngland I fully agree, the Rolex Explorer II can do it all, while being under the radar. Cheers
If it's so unpopular, why the hell am I having to 'effin wait on one?!? Make more, ROLEX!!! Daddy has got 10k burning a hole in his pocket😂😂

I don’t dig the explorer 2 since it doesn’t have a rotating bezel. GMT 2 for the win!
I really like the GMT - Master II, but that "old school" metal bezel of the Rolex Explorer II is something special. I just wish it rotated.
Not as flashy as other Rolex model, not having ceramic bezel, bulky 42mm. This watch is great but i mean it is too expensive to have a tool watch if you are considering why most of the rolex customer buying a Rolex watch for. They cant show off with this one.
Love that it is not flash, Cheers
You literally answered your own question with, “in my opinion.”
I hope so, that was the point, a fun watch enthusiast conversation. Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation.
The reason why I'm not like so much th Explorer II 226570 is that I own an Explorer II - 1655 reference. And the comparison is pitiful, it's clearly a stylistic involution. If Rolex 1655 had never existed Explorer II 226570 would be very cool in my opinion.
Interesting, thanks for your input.
Possibly the Explorer ii is less popular because it's seen as less versatile compared to other models. You can wear a Submariner with t-shit and jeans or a tux. The Explorer ii? Not so much
I think the Rolex Explorer II could be worm with a tux, but you are right, not as a good a fit as the Submariner.
Great content on a great watch! Waiting for mine in black.
Thank you, hopefully that call comes soon.
Perhaps Rolex should make a sports watch designed to wear to the shopping mall. They could call it, "The Shop-Master".

The black version is by far the most unpopular. The polar gets plenty of love in the community
I thought so too, but according to the 4 ADs of Rolex I've talked to, the black dial version sells 3 to 1 over the Polar version. Also Rolex produces more black dial versions than Polar dial.
@@cheynewalls Get out... I would have never guessed that. I'm shocked! Thanks for the insight, I enjoy your content.

The Christopher Ward 39mm C63 Sealander is basically an Explorer II and it looks better, for less than 1/10th of the price.
The Christopher Ward 39mm C63 Sealander is a good watch, but can't really hold a candle to the Rolex Explorer II except for its looks. The Sellita SW200-1 movement in the Ward is no-wear near as good as the 3285, Manufacture Rolex.
@@cheynewalls That’s true for sure, the movements aren’t comparable at all, but looks on the wrist at arms length are pretty good.

@@Thelimey it’s an amazing watch
I agree that it is one of the least popular, but not sure about unpopular. Anyway why does it matter? Doesn’t it mean that the that people really want it can get it? Rather than spending two years on a wait list?
From a popularity point of view the spend vs what you get, it make sense to get a submariner if you really want to show that you have a Rolex. Esp since price point is in the same range.
By the way; is that the ”big brother” that went up a mountain that you had there? Oh well only time will tell I guess 😉

I like explore II , but older one
It is different for everyone. I just really like the new movement they put in the current model.
This watch is beautiful but they made it 2mm too wide just not to canibalise the gmt market
I hear what you are say, alot of people agree with that.
If you have big wrists, this is the best looking one Rolex makes. The Daytona looks ridiculously petite, almost effeminate on me.
The Rolex Explorer II is so underrated for its tool watch design and look. Cheers
This is basically a GMT but under the radar version. Same internals.
Indeed, same movement, basic functions, just a different look
If it’s so unpopular, why am I on the waitlist?😂 It needs to be even more unpopular so I can get mine
All good points
It’s because most “men” don’t have wrists big enough to wear the Polar E2. I’m 6’5” 250# and it wears like a dream. Let the little boys keep their little boy watches 😂
Hey, hey we are all friends here. Its all just personal preference.
Perhaps its because in white looks more cheap than a submariner or a date just, tosporty for rich customer, and unknkow for comun people so dont have interest for people who buy rolex because they want to be recognize as rolex customer...
I didn't think of that, interesting. Thanks for that input.

I'm not a diver either, but the elapsed time bezel of the Submariner is a feature I find genuinely useful.
Because it’s uncomfortable at 42 mm and over 53 mm in lug-to-lug length

Cheers
