Worth to mention: There are 3 different versions of the older A15 chip. Two of them got 4 GB RAM. One got 6 GB RAM. iPad Mini 6 (2021 / A15) got 4 GB RAM. I just wanted to point this out so people don't think "A15 equals to 4 GB RAM". Also worth to talk about - the dongle port! Mini 5 - Lightning - 480 Mbps Mini 6 - USB C - 5 Gbps Mini 7 - USB C - 10 Gbps
Yes, the 6GB model was only for the iPhone 13 Pro. It was effectively the A15 Pro before they started slapping the Pro name on the iPhone Pro chip varient.
Apple also did that with the A13 chip, all models of the Iphone 11 had 4gb ram but Ipad 9 and Iphone SE 2020 had only 3gb ram both the Iphone SE and Ipad came out after the 11
iPad mini 6 owner here. I'm really disappointed that the screen tech wasn't changed. Still happy with my current mini so will not be upgrading. Maybe in two to three years when iPad Os is no longer compatible....
Why change the pencil to pencil pro if the screen is not pro? The fact that I have to get a new pencil if I upgrade, is enough reason for me to not upgrade.
When you’re the king you don’t need to compete. Android tablets are all but dead, especially at this form factor. The only decent ones are iPad Pro competitors. Windows tablets exist but then you have to use Windows. By all means, if you have an idea to bring back premium android tablets do it, I loved the Nexus 7.

I can't understand this rentless complaining about the lack of OLED and especially 120hz. I recently saved a lot of money by trading in my 13" M1 iPad Pro for a 10th gen iPad, and it works just fine (easier to hold) in any of my use cases, like watching movies, reading or listening to books and podcasts, writing email and occasionally doing some drawing with my 1th gen Apple Pencil. For more demanding tasks I use my 14" M3 MacBook Pro and I haven't thought for a minute about the advantage of having a 120hz display.
Mini is a wonderful device. The only thing I was hoping for is that Apple would make it waterproof so I could read and consume content on a big screen in hot tub. And perhaps a brighter screen for outdoors.

but didn’t tackle the most important point: it’s ultra mobile so you will use it outdoors too. increase the fking brightness! it doesn’t even need an OLED or 120hz display. the 500 nits are not enough for reading or watching stuff on the mini in bright sunlight! that was the only big issue

My 2018 iPad Pro 11 died, I won’t be upgrading my 13 PM until Apple stop supporting it and I want something with Apple Intelligence so this is perfect for me. I don’t want another full sized iPad and I’ve found the perfect keyboard case for it to go with my trackpad 2 so this was preordered the moment I heard about it.

A lazy update to use up supply chain inventory and not to innovate and give customers what they want in a much loved form factor. A nice budget option for people but having waited for this version before buying something will be skipping this. Nice review though mate thank you.

I prefer when Apple was more simple during the iPad's first 4 years where there was only just that single iPad that got all the latest hardware to offer at the time and packed more things than iPhones. That's the time period when the iPad was a higher end device than an iPhone.
Does this iPad Mini 7 still continue to offer support for the Apple Pencil 2, or is it Apple Pencil Pro only?! I'm hesitating to upgrade JUST BECAUSE I have to upgrade the pencil too... what am I supposed to do with my 2nd gen pencil now? I use the mini for note taking and work not making digital art, the pro features of the new pencil is not necessary.
Best you can do is maybe sell it to someone else who wants a 2nd generation pencil. There are so many people using older models that need the 2nd gen but don't want to pay full price for it when they can buy it used. I'm also an iPad mini 6 user and I don't plan on upgrading until Apple makes an iPad mini 8 at least or when Apple no longer updates the mini 6. It's not worth it imo
ive got a mini 6 with the previous pro pencil, i was quite surprised that they dropped support for that model pencil. basically means id need to sell the pencil along with the ipad at upgrade time.
It’s pretty great. I’m thinking about buying a new iPad to replace mine. But at $500, I think I’ll save more money and just go for the Pro. I want to get a Mini for the small size and ease to carry around.

It’s lost it’s charm :) Thanks for reviewing and not bashing the product, OLED would be nice, MagSafe would be killer, but these upgrades meet most needs and this review is very much in touch with what this iPad is meant to be. Call me optimistic but I see only upsides to the new mini. Getting rid of the 60 GB thing took too long, let's hope this trend continues with storage offerings. The AI part on its own is a compelling draw.

This one was worth waiting for. I just ordered mine I'm purple with 512 GB storage, folio cover and Apple Pencil Pro. It was the USB-C, big storage, and especially the Apple Pencil Pro that I was especially hoping for. Apple Intelligence will be interesting, but it's not what I was looking for. The size is perfect. Big enough but never too big. Crazy portable, it even fits in my jacket pocket. I'm upgrading from an iPad mini 2 with a broken home button. An upgrade well worth it. I already have a bluetooth keyboard (two actually, one is a piano keyboard) for it. I passed on cellular. I can use my iPhone as a hotspot in a pinch. But the chamfered edges on my space gray iPad mini with Retina display still look cool. The squared-off edges of everything nowadays just reminds me of the iPhone 4s that I inherited from my wife. Distinctly old-fashioned.

It doesn't meant to be a Mac book replacement or alternative. That's why ipad has other series like air & pro. Mini is good enough for people like me. This will make me use it more often, such watching TH-cam rather draining battery on my phone. Plus, it's the best 8 inch tablet in market that support best apps for photo and video amateur editing. Definitely considering.
It’s a bit contradictory that you present the compatibility with Dead Stranding (which requires 100Gb storage) as a selling point and two minutes later you say that the 128 GB is the best option… I’d like to see a real iPad mini Pro with support for extended display. That would make me upgrade.
The new mini is everything it needs to be for a cycle refresh no more no less. It’s a solid tablet that will easily last the 3 years until the cycle refresh it again This is a device squarely aimed at business and professionals for the most part hence why it has flash. Perfect to be a work horse for businesses that need connectivity camera and flash examples for HVAC, plumping and other companies while not being huge and cumbersome.
I also read hover option on apple pencil won't work on iPad mini. quote" No, the hover feature for the Apple Pencil does not work on the iPad mini 7. The hover feature is only available on certain iPad models, including the iPad Pro 11-inch (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation), iPad Pro 13-inch (M4), iPad Air 11-inch (M2), and iPad Air 13-inch (M2)" unquote And no 120Hz screen.... even with more memory, the screen will show lag.
For me, I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade from my mini 6, 256gb, Wifi+Cellular. A screen upgrade was the only compelling change that I would have upgraded for.

So many are calling this just a lazy update, and yeah, it is. But perhaps there's a reason for it. They are burning up supply chain inventory for sure (why the binned 5C GPU chip though?) but I think we got just about everything possible without modifying the physical design. A new display (those bezels, oof), the landscape camera from the iPad 10, all would have been great. But then there would be a need for all new cases and screen protectors (remember, the iPad mini is a pretty niche product, won't have iPhone volume for accessories.). With the rumors flying about a new iPhone design for next year, I wouldn't be surprised if we see (in 2025) a new "Ultra" version of the iPhone that combines the iPad Mini and iPhone Pro Max devices. Basically the iPhone Pro Max with the 8"+ display (but thin bezels!) and a big honkin' battery. Then the cellular option on the iPad Mini goes away (maybe a software tweak for seamless iPhone hotspot usage and an on-board GPS chip) and perhaps the Mini nameplate is retired and we just get two size options (8" & 11") for the iPad 11th Gen.
Finally the update I’ve been waiting for. Sure it can be better with the OLED, 120 hz, A18 Pro, camera position. But I like the keep the price down and skipped those good to have, but not necessarily features. I mean I’m still using the 5th gen mini and it’s work really good for my purposes, and since I gave to my wife, Ann and my 10.5” pro and 11” pros to my kids, damn I’m using the 9.7 pro and still “ok”, because I do my main tasks on a MacBook. IMO if you’re a Mac user with any Apple silicone, M series iPads are overkill and unnecessary except for some niche professional cases. So I’m really happy about this update ( not an upgrade IMO😂)
Been thinking of getting one for a while, but it was a colossal ripoff at $820 AUD for 64GB. Now it’s $800 for 128GB and a better chip. The form factor makes up for the lack of fancy features. Should it have 90Hz for the price? Yes. But it’s not like there is a vibrant and competitive small tablet market, unlike the base iPhone competing with more feature rich android phones

This is a fair upgrade, a new chipset, more RAM, faster port, Apple IA and a base model with 128 gb of storage that is actually useful. The price is also lower.
Why all the hand ringing over upgrading to the iPad Mini 7? I pulled the trigger immediately. I bought the 256K which cost $600 and got a $230 trade-in for my 64K iPad Mini 6 for an out of pocket $370. For me, that’s a bargain. I get a faster processor, four times the memory, a faster USB, improved WiFi and Bluetooth and a brand new device.
I wanted an Apple iPad mini. I waited for the new one. It’s basically the old one. Nothing offered to inspire me to fork over $500. Looks like I just saved myself from giving Apple more of my money for a half-ass product.
Same here. I was about to get the new iPad mini. I expected a much bigger performance upgrade with waiting this long, but putting in a year old (bin version 5c gpu chip) that's not even the full version 6c gpu A17 Pro, copy and paste the iPad Air colors from earlier this year. I'm super upset and will not get one because this is such a lazy upgrade.
buy the iPad mini 6 refurbished cheaper now that the iPad mini 7 is out. Lets be honest the Apple intelligence stuff is going to need the year to get going fully, it's a public beta, the iPad mini 6 is still a good choice for what most people want from it. Heck, mine is basically used for the Kindle app hahaha
I have the Mini 6 256 gig. The new Mini 7 is mostly spec upgrades . So at $500 for features that the average user won’t even be able to tell the difference , it’s just not worth spending the extra cash for the upgrade . Then you have the added expense of $130 for the new pencil. However , if you are someone with a Mini 5 or earlier then it would definitely be worth upgrading .
Wonderful device marred by the entry storage + average display + entry price. I was so looking forward for this mini. I have the 9th gen ipad and that does almost anything i want it to. The mini 7 @ 499$ would've been a bang for your buck if it had come with 256 gigs to begin with + 90 or 120 hz display. In 2024. 499$ dollars for a 60hz display with 128 gig model is a sham. Apple's sales have been dipping but they just don't seem to get it. What you are offering for such asking prices is absurd.
Disappointed this doesn’t have the A18 chip featured in the new iPhone 16. I'm curious what, if any, Apple Intelligence features will be missing based on it having the older A17 Pro chip. Also, the $200 jump from 256GB to 512BG is pretty mean spirited of Apple. So, whilst I'm underwhelmed, it's still mildly tempting due to the AI features that *may* become available.
Greg, great review as always, and not that I am in the market for one, I would have thought to make this more worthwhile Apple would have at least try to put a mini led for their screen display, along with the upgrade in storage, upgrade in processor, they probably would have gotten away with raising the price by $100.00 I know it would have seemed expensive in some people’s eyes, but at least Apple would have had some justification for such an increase.
I have the new ipad pro 11in and i did get the pro but i always found it cumbersome to use it with the pencil on top because i love using the ipad in landscape mode with the keyboard. I have been using it as a laptop replacement and I do use it to write down certain notes when in meetings. I want to get this ipad mini so i can pair it with the pencil pro. I feel like i will use it more often. The last mini I had was the iPad Mini 2 and that thing was my most cherished iPad ever. That thing was such a revolutionary upgrade at the time, well in my opinion. Im happy the finally upgraded the storage on the mini. That was the main thing that held me back from getting the 6th generation and even when the 256gb version did go on sale I felt as if i was still getting ripped off. This mini will be good. Wish the display was a bit better maybe mini LED to pair it with the name? This is still good. Good to pair it with my Iphone 15 pro max and Ipad pro 11
@@thomashrubecky1663 I think they're saying that the iPhone SE 4 that's coming next year would be a great phone to be in the same team as the iPad mini 7. With the iPhone SE getting the biggest upgrade in years, people are definitely going to buy that. Anyone who also wants a good iPad that's not quite portable but also a good partner for the SE 4 would buy the iPad mini 7 (assuming that they haven't owned the mini 6). Assuming that the starting price for the iPhone SE next year is about $459-499, when buying both the SE and base 128 GB iPad mini 7 (no additional accessories included), then a buyer would be able to buy them both for just about $1000 or a little under that. These two would make a killer setup for people who have older models and don't want to spend over $1,000 to buy the more expensive models that can do almost everything that the SE and iPad mini 7 can do.
8gb memory is going to be key going forward for iOS products. I’m still on the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro 10.5 largely because the 4gb of ram on each has given them longevity for standard applications.

I traded my 6th for a credit to get m.4 11inch while it is very nice screen and promotion 120hz. I still missing the portability

I’ve been waiting on the new iPad mini but a bit disappointed on the update. I still need a. iPad though. Should I get this mini or the iPad Air? For me the price difference is negligible so I guess I’m leaning toward air?
If you have an iphone just get the ipad air. Otherwise with the mini you are just getting an iPhone with a bit bigger screen.

I'm hesitating to upgrade JUST BECAUSE I have to upgrade the pencil too... what am I supposed to do with my 2nd gen pencil now?
I use the mini for note taking and work not making digital art, the pro features of the new pencil is not necessary.

Best you can do is maybe sell it to someone else who wants a 2nd generation pencil. There are so many people using older models that need the 2nd gen but don't want to pay full price for it when they can buy it used.
I'm also an iPad mini 6 user and I don't plan on upgrading until Apple makes an iPad mini 8 at least or when Apple no longer updates the mini 6. It's not worth it imo
ive got a mini 6 with the previous pro pencil, i was quite surprised that they dropped support for that model pencil. basically means id need to sell the pencil along with the ipad at upgrade time.
It’s pretty great. I’m thinking about buying a new iPad to replace mine. But at $500, I think I’ll save more money and just go for the Pro.
I want to get a Mini for the small size and ease to carry around.

It’s lost it’s charm :) Thanks for reviewing and not bashing the product, OLED would be nice, MagSafe would be killer, but these upgrades meet most needs and this review is very much in touch with what this iPad is meant to be. Call me optimistic but I see only upsides to the new mini. Getting rid of the 60 GB thing took too long, let's hope this trend continues with storage offerings. The AI part on its own is a compelling draw.

I just ordered mine I'm purple with 512 GB storage, folio cover and Apple Pencil Pro.
It was the USB-C, big storage, and especially the Apple Pencil Pro that I was especially hoping for.
Apple Intelligence will be interesting, but it's not what I was looking for.
The size is perfect. Big enough but never too big. Crazy portable, it even fits in my jacket pocket.
I'm upgrading from an iPad mini 2 with a broken home button. An upgrade well worth it.
I already have a bluetooth keyboard (two actually, one is a piano keyboard) for it.
I passed on cellular. I can use my iPhone as a hotspot in a pinch.
But the chamfered edges on my space gray iPad mini with Retina display still look cool.
The squared-off edges of everything nowadays just reminds me of the iPhone 4s that I inherited from my wife.

It doesn't meant to be a Mac book replacement or alternative. That's why ipad has other series like air & pro. Mini is good enough for people like me. This will make me use it more often, such watching TH-cam rather draining battery on my phone. Plus, it's the best 8 inch tablet in market that support best apps for photo and video amateur editing. Definitely considering.

It’s a bit contradictory that you present the compatibility with Dead Stranding (which requires 100Gb storage) as a selling point and two minutes later you say that the 128 GB is the best option… I’d like to see a real iPad mini Pro with support for extended display. That would make me upgrade.
The new mini is everything it needs to be for a cycle refresh no more no less.
It’s a solid tablet that will easily last the 3 years until the cycle refresh it again
This is a device squarely aimed at business and professionals for the most part hence why it has flash.
Perfect to be a work horse for businesses that need connectivity camera and flash examples for HVAC, plumping and other companies while not being huge and cumbersome.
I also read hover option on apple pencil won't work on iPad mini. quote" No, the hover feature for the Apple Pencil does not work on the iPad mini 7. And no 120Hz screen.... even with more memory, the screen will show lag.

For me, I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade from my mini 6, 256gb, Wifi+Cellular. A screen upgrade was the only compelling change that I would have upgraded for.

i have an ipad mini 4 since 2017 and I think, it's about time to move to the newer model...
So many are calling this just a lazy update, and yeah, it is. But perhaps there's a reason for it. They are burning up supply chain inventory for sure (why the binned 5C GPU chip though?) but I think we got just about everything possible without modifying the physical design. A new display (those bezels, oof), the landscape camera from the iPad 10, all would have been great. But then there would be a need for all new cases and screen protectors (remember, the iPad mini is a pretty niche product, won't have iPhone volume for accessories.). With the rumors flying about a new iPhone design for next year, I wouldn't be surprised if we see (in 2025) a new "Ultra" version of the iPhone that combines the iPad Mini and iPhone Pro Max devices. Basically the iPhone Pro Max with the 8"+ display (but thin bezels!) and a big honkin' battery. Then the cellular option on the iPad Mini goes away (maybe a software tweak for seamless iPhone hotspot usage and an on-board GPS chip) and perhaps the Mini nameplate is retired and we just get two size options (8" & 11") for the iPad 11th Gen.
Of course it 2 chip experience jump because when was iPad mini released? Surprisingly surprised
Finally the update I’ve been waiting for. Sure it can be better with the OLED, 120 hz, A18 Pro, camera position. But I like the keep the price down and skipped those good to have, but not necessarily features.
I mean I’m still using the 5th gen mini and it’s work really good for my purposes, and since I gave to my wife, Ann and my 10.5” pro and 11” pros to my kids, damn I’m using the 9.7 pro and still “ok”, because I do my main tasks on a MacBook. IMO if you’re a Mac user with any Apple silicone, M series iPads are overkill and unnecessary except for some niche professional cases. So I’m really happy about this update ( not an upgrade IMO😂)
Been thinking of getting one for a while, but it was a colossal ripoff at $820 AUD for 64GB. Now it’s $800 for 128GB and a better chip. The form factor makes up for the lack of fancy features. Should it have 90Hz for the price? Yes. But it’s not like there is a vibrant and competitive small tablet market, unlike the base iPhone competing with more feature rich android phones

This is a fair upgrade, a new chipset, more RAM, faster port, Apple IA and a base model with 128 gb of storage that is actually useful. The price is also lower.

Why all the hand ringing over upgrading to the iPad Mini 7? I pulled the trigger immediately. I bought the 256K which cost $600 and got a $230 trade-in for my 64K iPad Mini 6 for an out of pocket $370. For me, that’s a bargain. I get a faster processor, four times the memory, a faster USB, improved WiFi and Bluetooth and a brand new device.

I wanted an Apple iPad mini. I waited for the new one. It’s basically the old one. Nothing offered to inspire me to fork over $500. Looks like I just saved myself from giving Apple more of my money for a half-ass product.
Same here. I was about to get the new iPad mini. I expected a much bigger performance upgrade with waiting this long, but putting in a year old (bin version 5c gpu chip) that's not even the full version 6c gpu A17 Pro, copy and paste the iPad Air colors from earlier this year. I'm super upset and will not get one because this is such a lazy upgrade.
for the same price actually you can get a brand new samsung s9 tab with oled screen, an 120hz screen and it comes with a pencil...
buy the iPad mini 6 refurbished cheaper now that the iPad mini 7 is out. Lets be honest the Apple intelligence stuff is going to need the year to get going fully, it's a public beta, the iPad mini 6 is still a good choice for what most people want from it. Heck, mine is basically used for the Kindle app hahaha

I have the Mini 6 256 gig. The new Mini 7 is mostly spec upgrades . So at $500 for features that the average user won’t even be able to tell the difference , it’s just not worth spending the extra cash for the upgrade . Then you have the added expense of $130 for the new pencil. However , if you are someone with a Mini 5 or earlier then it would definitely be worth upgrading .

Wonderful device marred by the entry storage + average display + entry price. I was so looking forward for this mini. I have the 9th gen ipad and that does almost anything i want it to. The mini 7 @ 499$ would've been a bang for your buck if it had come with 256 gigs to begin with + 90 or 120 hz display. In 2024. 499$ dollars for a 60hz display with 128 gig model is a sham. Apple's sales have been dipping but they just don't seem to get it. What you are offering for such asking prices is absurd.
Returned the iPad mini 6 because of the jelly scroll in portrait mode, hoping the 7 will fix this issue. Fingers crossed….
Disappointed this doesn’t have the A18 chip featured in the new iPhone 16. I'm curious what, if any, Apple Intelligence features will be missing based on it having the older A17 Pro chip. Also, the $200 jump from 256GB to 512BG is pretty mean spirited of Apple. So, whilst I'm underwhelmed, it's still mildly tempting due to the AI features that *may* become available.
The neural engine has basically the same performance from the A17pro to A18, they are both clocked at 35TOPS.
Greg, great review as always, and not that I am in the market for one, I would have thought to make this more worthwhile Apple would have at least try to put a mini led for their screen display, along with the upgrade in storage, upgrade in processor, they probably would have gotten away with raising the price by $100.00
I know it would have seemed expensive in some people’s eyes, but at least Apple would have had some justification for such an increase.
I have the new ipad pro 11in and i did get the pro but i always found it cumbersome to use it with the pencil on top because i love using the ipad in landscape mode with the keyboard. I have been using it as a laptop replacement and I do use it to write down certain notes when in meetings. I want to get this ipad mini so i can pair it with the pencil pro. I feel like i will use it more often. The last mini I had was the iPad Mini 2 and that thing was my most cherished iPad ever. That thing was such a revolutionary upgrade at the time, well in my opinion. Im happy the finally upgraded the storage on the mini. That was the main thing that held me back from getting the 6th generation and even when the 256gb version did go on sale I felt as if i was still getting ripped off. This mini will be good. Wish the display was a bit better maybe mini LED to pair it with the name? This is still good. Good to pair it with my Iphone 15 pro max and Ipad pro 11

@@thomashrubecky1663 I think they're saying that the iPhone SE 4 that's coming next year would be a great phone to be in the same team as the iPad mini 7. With the iPhone SE getting the biggest upgrade in years, people are definitely going to buy that. Anyone who also wants a good iPad that's not quite portable but also a good partner for the SE 4 would buy the iPad mini 7 (assuming that they haven't owned the mini 6). Assuming that the starting price for the iPhone SE next year is about $459-499, when buying both the SE and base 128 GB iPad mini 7 (no additional accessories included), then a buyer would be able to buy them both for just about $1000 or a little under that. These two would make a killer setup for people who have older models and don't want to spend over $1,000 to buy the more expensive models that can do almost everything that the SE and iPad mini 7 can do.

8gb memory is going to be key going forward for iOS products. I’m still on the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro 10.5 largely because the 4gb of ram on each has given them longevity for standard applications.
