Yes, I agree. Ms. Hyman was one in a billion. I cherish the work she left behind. I'm thankful that I knew how special her voice was when she was still alive. Sadly I never saw her perform live.
Amen. As soon as I hear her voice it always gets my attention because her gift is one of a kind. She’s such a beautifully classy woman that I miss on the daily.
Legendary, classy, gifted and gorgeous. Words can not describe... gone too soon. I'm fortunate to have been part of the "PH" experience. Thank you for blessing us with your gifts and talent... gone but not forgotten.
This woman is one of the finest vocalists of all time. Just that good. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Beautiful woman, timeless, mammoth voice. Like Whitney, she was the whole package. Like Hathaway, her loss was a blow to music. We love you, forever.
I have so many wonderful memories of this great, beautiful woman! She's had such an amazing impact upon my life & when the world lost her, myself & my family members deeply & personally felt it bcuz we all loved her, her music, her sense of style, her personality, her honesty, her giftedness, her frailties, her strength & her family background ( she was a.preacher's kid like us & grew up in the church as well, church choirs, the whole nine!)😆 We were Pentecostal ( Holiness); we danced for the Lord; got " slayed.in the Holy Spirit", etc. The women in my family so closely identified with her & her personal struggles; I personally met Phyllis after a concert in the Spring of '88, I think, at the College Ave. Student Center in New Brunswick, NJ; I asked for her autograph( she politely declined photos bcuz she had dressed down & removed her makeup; she was adamant about people not seeing her " without her face on"!! I told her that I totally understood ( but my lil heart was secretly broken 💔)!! My family & I were devastated by her passing 7 years later on June 30, 1995. Love & miss you terribly, Great Jazz Empress, the late & beautiful, Ms. Phyllis Hyman! Gone, but will NEVER, EVER BE FORGOTTEN!! 🙏
Phyllis Hyman had it all beauty, talent, intelligent and charisma. She didn't have to dress provocatively, to get attention. Her persona, charm, and stage present, and talent and beauty speak for itself. RIP Phyllis Hyman.
Miss you terribly, Jazz & Soul Empress!! You were like a famous distant relative of my family; all of.my female family members & my female friends all loved your music & style all of our lives!! Continue RIHP!! Lawd, I used to play my " Living All Alone" cassette to death!
Right?! I wish that her family, former managers and her estate would do way more to celebrate and honor Phyllis's legacy. Think of her fabulous wardrobe! Unless it was all sold off privately, why not put together a museum to display some of her best concert attire, with photos from her childhood, high school years, magazine covers/articles, best performances, and footage from her TV appearances and concerts. And for the crowning jewel in it all, they should have a Phyllis lookalike who could flawlessly portray her mannerisms while lip synching several of her best loved songs. They could even call it _The Phyllis Hyman Experience_ and have it in Philly -- a place where her fans, old and young, could go to celebrate her life and legacy. RIP Phyllis💔
No you got that all wrong, Whitney was gospel, Jazz and Pop & R&B, Phyllis was straight Jazz & maybe some RB and that's what the studio saw and decided to go with a multi-skilled artist with more range. No diss to Phyllis but she had a narrow lane & No future for where music was going. And right after all of it, Mariah came along who would've ended Phyllis too, so it was just bad timing for Phyllis that's all. When music goes to the next level, some can't go there. It's kinda like what happened to Frankie Lymon, when Doo Wop was dead, so was he.
Jay Dilla I disagree STRONGLY a voice like phyllis doesn't just fade away.... sade also had a "narrow" lane and has had more success then both mariah & whitney probably put together I think your opinion is a bit off base and as for timing I do agree I believe whitney was younger and more agreeable as it pertains to what she would and wouldn't sing opposed to phyllis who refused to sing pop records.... personal demons held her back more so then the changing trends remember phyllis navigated thru the PEAK of disco lol phyllis had a strong fanbase up until the day she died she never sold alot of records she sold a hell of alot of live shows though... she just wasn't interested in crossing over aka pop music so the labels moved on to someone who would and saying mariah would "finish" phyllis that's like saying luther would of finished marvin or prince would of finished james brown lol just because someone new and fresh comes along doesn't mean they make the artist who are already established irrelevant every artist has a time of peak commerical success.... alot of artist self destruct whitney fell off because she was more interested in hitting the pipe then laying down tracks , mariah fell off because she's a bipolar sloppy pissy drunk , phyllis because of cocaine & depression , marvin started freebasing and lost his mind , rick james I don't think I even need to say lol point being all artist have fanbases and phyllis had almost a cult like one she would of been fine had she gotten help for her illness same with whitney and as for frankie lymon his issues had more to do with drug abuse , depression and going thru puberty and having people tell him he couldn't sing anymore because he couldn't hit those piercing notes anymore then doo wop going out of style....
Jay Dilla I agree with most of what you said. Whitney was so much more than pop. Folks are too busy dismissing her talent instead of studying her discography. She covered so much, and she sang opera a bit as well! Actually Angela Bofill was brought to Arista before Whitney in order to compete with Phyllis, but people just talk crap about Whitney because she became the bigger star. The time for Jazz was going out and pop, hip hop, and R&B we’re becoming mainstream. Phyllis was so awesome but was often unwilling to try new things. When she tried something new with Don’t Want To Change The World, a track completely different than all her other songs ever, it gave her her first and only #1 hit. She should’ve continued to open up to new things. One can try new things yet still stay true to their roots. Whitney was versatile yet remained true to her gospel roots. @TVGEBT Sade is awesome, but she’s not more successful than Whitney or Mariah. Lol!
OOOMMMGGDDD!! i MISS THIS WOMAN SOOO MUCH! HER VOICE IS OFF OF THE HOOKIE. I must agree with you all....and it can't be denied.....Phyllis is in a class all by her! I know she is at peace!
man oh man... The only person i have heard come close to this live is Peabo Bryson when here was here in Detroit singing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She was limitless. Only she, Aretha Franklin and Anita Baker knew how to make songs THEIRS!!! i have tears in my eyes...
This was in 1986 or early '87. Believe it or not, this was the full performance, as Phyllis also sang "Living All Alone" right before "WYWDFL". There was no interview following the songs.
@shjtyu That's my point. Sexy dress isnt always indicative of lack of talent. Style of dress is a reflection of how that artist wants to represent themselves. Tina was sexy and could sing. So I was sying just b/c a singer dresses sexy, it doesnt mean they are tying to make up for a lack of talent.
In all reality, Phyllis should've hooked up with Al Jarreau back then and did a few albums with him, they were more in sync in the Jazz world which was better focused for her. She wasn't ready for the New Jack Era of R&B/Pop music, it was just a different time.
She was ready for it. She did Don't Wanna Change the World, one of her few mid tempos and it went straight to Number 1. She just didnt feel inclined to only do radio friendly ear candy music. She wanted it on her terms without a label telling her what and how she should sing. Unfortunately, it wasn't long lasting
LOL oh that's right..... Cause you know "Aretha can dress!" (thinking silently to myself, nobody was brave enough to tell Madea that she look like she stepped down off the picture window(looking like some curtains).... hehehehe...... I love it..... funny comment...
Why do people insist on being so blatantly ignorant? Hemming and Hawing about the singers of today dressing sexy or skimpy. Newsflash, there have ALWAYS been singers who have used sex appeal and attire as part of their image. This is not new. Also, Phyllis was known for her DEEP revealing v neck dresses, which showed daring cleavage and was still classy. There are singers today who don't use sex appeal for instance.. Chrisette Michelle, Janell Monet, Conya Doss,Carol Riddick,Jaguar Wright.
Cont. The list goes on. In yester year there was tina turner who on many occasions went sans bra with a see thru dress and you could see her breasts. Aretha dressed EXTREMELY sexy when she lost weight. Check out the vid of her doing Giving Him Something He can feel on the midnight special and Jump on soul train where she wore an orange crochet see thru outfit that only covered her breasts with her stomach exposed, yet she is one of the most notable voices ever.
@SpazChat I agree, that's why they need stylists..... and Poor Aretha Franklin throughout the 70's she refused to use the services of a stylist and time and time again she looked like a fashion kamikaze with all those damn feathers and fainbow colored chiffon frocks ...a mess for a whole decade....LMAO.
bottom line is singers dress how they want and they change looks. It has nothing to do with talent either. People hear someone make a comment and like a mindless zombie they just regurgitate what they hear others say ad nauseum. It is so stupid. Another sexy dresser was Nona Hendrix of Labelle. She would wear string bikinis and barely there outfits as did sarah dash .... And ???
Love how her voice is like an instrument!
she was always beautifully dressed, and always looked so classy, miss ya Phyllis
Yes!! Motown Master she was classy lady and always with class.
She could sing to me morning, noon and night and start all over again. #legend #underrated #missher
Me too! Can Nobody F with Phyllis Hyman!

She had good vocal technique, her voice sounded like a well a tuned instrument. 5 stars, Phyllis is a favorite of mine.
Wish she and Bobby had a duet, R.I.P. to both.
Not only was she stunningly beautiful but she had an incredible voice.

Lovely lady! Thank you Phyllis!
This song has been stuck in my head for two days straight! What talent!
Phyllis Hyman RULED the mic...with Power and Grace!!
Until Whitney came along and took it!
Phyllis was in a class by herself. Her sound was jazz. Whitney was POP.
No you got that all wrong, Whitney was gospel, Jazz and Pop & R&B, Phyllis was straight Jazz & maybe some RB and that's what the studio saw and decided to go with a multi-skilled artist with more range. LOL oh that's right..... Cause you know "Aretha can dress!" (thinking silently to myself, nobody was brave enough to tell Madea that she look like she stepped down off the picture window(looking like some curtains).... hehehehe......
I love it..... funny comment...
M. Lewis Aretha could sing but she sure did NOT know how to dress! Sorry, no injury intended!

@Mongo76 Yeah, but Nona, can sang!
No damn lipsynching here.
