  • This video shows you how to reconnect the internal wiring in a Porter Cable 6 Gallon Air Compressor. It's a common problem that I've had to fix on mine a few times so hopefully this will help you get yours fixed and up and running. Remember, before you open up the shroud make sure you unplug your unit! I forgot to say that in the video.
If you get sick of trying to fix yours and decide that you want a new one (or if you just want one because of how awesome they are) here is a link to Amazon:

LIFE SAVER! I was using my compressor as I normally would, and just letting the tank get some air in it, not even using it and it suddenly stopped. I thought to myself "I've only had this thing for 8 or so months, what could have POSSIBLY broken?". I'm so glad your video was the first one that came up when I tried troubleshooting. Saved me a lot of headache!

Thank you for your video, this is exactly the issue I had (same compressor, too!). My entire power cord had pulled out, and while I was able to take the cover off easily, I didn't know where the black & white wires were plugged in originally. Much appreciated, sir!

Since there is so much vibration in a compressor it is not uncommon for these type of disconnect connectors to weaken over time. You can gently compress the connectors' "Female" side with pliers so that when the two parts slide together they bite more firmly and make a more positive connection. If you look at the female connector from the end, the non-insulated portion will look like a flat/wide "U" but with the tops of the letter curving back in on itself (much like the shape found at the top of an Ionic column). Just gently and slightly compress those curving bits from the top so that you narrow the space that the 1/4" male blade fits into. You can also easily re-terminate the wire with a new crimp-on Female disconnect for very little cost. Just don't cut the wire too short to reach its target connection.

The lead wires from the cord on mine got loose and chopped up by the fan. I had to shorten the cord and put new connectors on the them. 1 ring, 1 straight flat and 1 90deg flat. Worked, but a bit of a pain to do.

If anyone is having a power issue, it’s most likely the ‘pressure switch’ being stuck !! ⬇️
Have fixed myself without tools, re-introduced high pressure (150-160psi) max another source into the regulator. You will need a backwards connection fitting, but will fix issue 99% of time
