    Causes
Occipital neuralgia can be the result of pinched nerves or muscle tightness in the neck. It can also be caused by a head or neck injury. Occipital neuralgia can either be primary or secondary. A secondary condition is associated with an underlying disease.
Although any of the following may be causes of occipital neuralgia, many cases can be attributed to chronic neck tension or unknown origins.
Symptoms of occipital neuralgia include his causes headaches that feel like severe piercing, throbbing or shock-like pain in the upper neck, back of the head or behind the ears., it is continuous aching, burning and throbbing, with intermittent shocking or shooting pain that generally starts at the base of the head and goes to the scalp on one or both sides of the head. Patients often have pain behind the eye of the affected side of the head. Additionally, a movement as light as brushing hair may trigger pain. The pain is often described as migraine-like and some patients may also experience symptoms common to migraines and cluster headaches.
can be very difficult to diagnose because of its similarities with migraines and other headache disorders. Therefore, it is important to seek medical care when you begin feeling unusual, sharp pain in the neck or scalp and the pain is not accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity. Begin by addressing the problem with your primary care physician. They may refer you to a specialist.
    Treatment
Treatment of occipital neuralgia aims to alleviate the pain; however, it is not a cure. Interventions can be surgical or non-surgical.
ANd iont his video i will show SNAG mobilization techniques, SNAGs stand for Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides. SNAGs can be applied to all the spinal joints, the rib cage and the sacroiliac joint. The therapist applies the appropriate accessory zygapophyseal glide while the patient performs the symptomatic movement. This must result in full range pain free movement.

The occipital nerve for me is the trigger that sets off an even more excruciating mass of pain above the ear on the right side around 4 or 5 inches round it seems. it started over a year and a half from the lower back of the neck radiating to the upper right back of the head and has now moved to the below the ear radiating up. There is also a constant area of different levels of pain at the base of the neck. I presume it is given by scar tissue from 35 radiation therapies that got rid of cancer there, i am trying to find out that simple little thing no doctors want to seem to address (?)... It simply cannot have the pressure given for too long with that stretching exercise... I'm with you 100% in attempting to remedy this issue...

@@AnniePilatesPhysicalTherapist God, I only wish it did... About 2.4 yrs ago i completed the 35 RT and i had noticed a slight electrical type pins/needles feeling at the base of the back of my neck and head and then to the upper part. No big deal, just noticing it. Then maybe 5 months out it got more defined and started getting my attention more and more. I spent the next year and a half trying to explain it to the radiologist who would never suggest what it could be. Then it started to move around to the right side and was getting more hurtful and I was just trying to find a way to fix it somehow and came across the term 'occipital neuralgia' that describes it perfectly. When I confronted him with this he actually denied it!? I recently went to a neurologist who also denied it could even possibly be what the issue is, but offered no other possibilities too. I have to wonder why they take this position... I have been to the ER twice now from the intensity of it with now words or advice on how to fix it...

Hi annie. You are an angel! Ive experienced this occipital thing 3x already on separate occassions (ages ago) while playing basketball. And it hurts like hell! The pinched nerved never went away after those 03 horrible episodes. I couldnt lift my entire left arm without that throbbing sting at the back of my head. It got worse yesterday. The throbbing nerve pain. Thank you for helping me today. Almost 80% went away after i followed your video tutorial just right now. I’ve followed a few different videos for ON pain relief and they all made my pain worse 😢 I’m worried to try this as I have pain all over the back of my head which makes putting any pressure on it extremely painful. I also likely have craniocervical instability and my chiropractor said not to tilt my head back as it destabilizes my neck further. Do you think it’s safe for me to do this?

    • @AnniePilatesPhysicalTherapist

No because what you have us instability , just do the strengthening part by increasing stability, I recommend do neck isometrics and I have video foe that but skip the part of neck extension , here is the link to try but skipping the neck extension or tilting back . Let me know how it goes

I’m on year 5 officially this month. Can this pain be reversed after that many years? I had the occipital release surgery in 2019. It worked 3 months and came back. I’ve been to dr after dr. Most of them very unsympathetic and absolutely no answers. And I’m still in daily chronic pain.
