Thank you for this. These exercises do work. The chin tuck is extremely helpful. @@strawberryorange3755 thank you for asking! I am much, much better. Over the last year, I do get the odd flare up, but what helps is if I keep the neck moving (for eg, when I get up and it’s throbbing, I’ll do the chin tuck exercise, move my head side to side and look over both shoulders for ten minutes or so). Also, popping a couple of pain killers really helps and I can get on with my day. I haven’t had a bad flare up since I posted this message. Hope you’re well yourself :-)

Your exercises have been very helpful. What do you recommend is the best sleeping position and type of pillow to mitigate the pain? For me, this is when I have the worst pains.
I was drenched in sweat after a workout indoors, then I went out for five minutes to grab something. It was windy and cold outside, In the back of my mind, I knew it was dangerous, and it was. Because that night I felt I got down with something. The next morning, I woke up with a slight fever. I was still able to function normally. I didn’t even look sick to the people around me, I also didn’t tell them. At night, it got serious, I felt and looked sick. Fever, shivering, aches, bad enough to keep me in bed most of the day. The following night is when I got hit by the stabbing pain behind my left ear. I had never had that in my life and I’m 41 years old. It was a throbbing stabbing pain every two minutes or so. The first night it was not that bad, kept me up a lot of the night, but also could still get some sleep in between the attacks. (The stabbing would stop for an hour or so before resuming). The following night, that’s when it became horrible. What I thought was already painful the night before increased twofold and this time, there was no respite. I couldn’t sleep. I was actually screaming every time I got hit. So I had to wake up my wife this time. That’s the night I started researching on TH-cam. I found MotivationalDoc’s videos first, they were helpful maybe, but I didn’t feel any significant relief from doing the exercices. This is the video that really worked for me. The chin tuck and the stretch really gave me instant relief which lasted almost an hour. For me, that was a huge progress. I was literally screaming every 30 seconds at some point. During that hour, I researched more and learned about Occipital Neuralgia. There was no single trigger or cause for me. When I think back, I did have some very minor injuries from on my left side. Then I strained my left forearm muscles during a workout, which I thought was not too bad, but I could clearly feel some nerve pain in the center of my hand, running up my arm. Basically, the muscles you use to make a fist, to grip. I overworked them. And it turns out the nerves there link back through the arm, shoulder all the way to the occipital area. Plus, in general, I do have bad posture that presses on those neck muscles. After that hour, the pain came back fresher than ever. It started hitting me as frequently as before, and this time, these exercises had no effect whatsoever. I found another video advising a full body massage. My Wife massaged the whole left side of my body. That helped. It calmed down to the point I could get some sleep. In the morning it was good. I even thought I was healed. Then It came back around noon, and started stabbing me to the point of screaming the whole day and night (it gave me a few breaks because I could take a few short naps). At this point, nothing in the videos worked anymore. What did help was heating pads right under my neck and not moving too much. Remember, THIS WAS ALL HAPPENING IN THE MIDDLE OF ME HAVING THE FLU AND FEVER! Just sitting up for more than a couple of minutes was hard. I had to muster all my energy just to go to the bathroom. I was too weak to do any meaningful exercises. My only hope was to believe, this nightmare came with the flu, and it will go away with the flu. I was right. As I was progressively recovering from the flu, the occipital neuralgia also got less and less painful, albeit just as frequent. The last day, it was still stabbing me every minute, just was not painful enough to get me to scream. My temperature went down, I felt almost recovered, I could got out on walks now and it was still there, but very mild pain. I forgot to mention that the last couple of days while it was still bad, it even spread to the right side too! There was a time I was getting hit from both sides at once! I think the whole thing lasted five or six days. It was horrible. I read accounts of people living with this for weeks, months or even years. I prayed to God. I asked him to spare me and my pain went away with the flu. The underlying cause is still there : Tight muscles under the base of the skull. Right now the left side tiny muscle is tight as piece of rubber. My wife even thought it was a bone, but I asked her how come there’s no such bone on the right side? My fear is that next time I get down with the flu, this horrible thing would come back with it. So, in the meantime, I’m working on my posture and still doing these exercises. Even though right now, I don’t feel any pain at all.

Hi, the video has been helpful. But I have been feeling discomort and tension around my head for about 4 months now. It feels as if a rubber band is wrapped around my head and its always tight. Hi Beth, I’m posting this here, not really about this video but still wanted to ask and see what you say. Thank you I have done isometric exercises on my neck before but wasn’t consistent. I have one sided scapular/ribcage issues that still no one has figured out but it is causing cervical issues, big time. I’ve tried strengthening /stabilizing my shoulders which I need a d for some reason something is inhibiting my progress. I just know it would take the stress off my neck and I wouldn’t have to mess with my neck. However, still can’t find an exercises/s to fix that area. In the meantime, I guess I want to restart the isometric neck exercises. I was reading pros and cons of isometric neck exercises and came across this. Is this true and if so is there something diff I could be doing. I don’t like the fact it mentioned blood pressure issues maybe. “the cons of isometric training are: Nervous system fatigue. Cardiovascular system can be affected as well. Increase blood pressure. Affects coordination, and. Decreases soft tissue elasticity. Thank you
Hi LW, I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. I have not had any patient experience the 'cons' mentioned. I don't know where that information came from, but I suppose if one used a great deal of resistance and held their breath at the same time, the excessive isometric exertion could have side effects. In the video, I specifically included the instruction of using light resistance and continuing to breathe. With light resistance and consistent breathing, I don't see those cons occurring. Now, as with many other exercises, if someone has a history of cardiovascular disease, arterial blockages, or other significant issues, there could be side effects. If you have other conditions or concerns, definitely check with your doctor.
Hi Beth, appreciate your advice please! I am suffering from BPPV for a long time, but started feeling off balance for some time now. Hi ne kontam, have you had a vestibular evaluation? Typically, this is done by a neurologist, audiologist or ENT (ear, nose and throat). In some areas, a physical therapist may able to evaluate you and begin treatment if appropriate or refer you to another provider as needed. If you would like to talk further, please send me a private message via my website at movementfunctionmaui.com/contact-1 and I can provide further information.
I’ve noticed my upper SCM muscles are also sore and do replicate the pain , They are very close to the occipital area Have you seen other patients the ON have these symptoms?

@@RitaBeaton thank you for your response. I hope the nerve block is a success. I am curious if you have been doing activities that caused your neck to be curved upward. An example would be gardening, pulling weeds something that has you bent over with your head raised? Just curious if this aggravated the nerve

These exercises can all be done after fusion (after the initial healing phase, approximately 4-6 weeks post-op). Start with small movements and stop if anything causes pain. If you are already seeing a physical therapist, tell them about these exercises and ask for their assistance in weaving them into your program as appropriate.
@@MovementFunction had the fusion in 2020 so I’m good post op. Thanks for the incorporation of these exercises with the current condition. Looking at PRP and Prolotherapy as options also. I had PRP on my knee with awesome results.
I have a question and i hope someone answers this, is it ok if itd hurts while im doing this? Im doing the exercises in the video for the first time and it hurts while doing so, is it normal?
Mild stretch discomfort is normal, similar to stretching any part of your body, but there should not be pain. First, be sure that you are doing the exercises with good posture and be gentle. If it is still painful, discontinue the exercises.
@@MovementFunction what i feel is where the pain comes from, like when doing thr exercises i can feel where the pain comes from and what it's radius, is it normal?
@@KingExca Ah, I understand what you mean. It's normal to feel the area of the pain during the exercise and it's okay if it is temporary, goes away or returns to baseline when you stop the exercise.

Yes I have this tingling, itching , it feels like there are bugs crawling around, also feels like tiny needles being stuck in my scalp. I'm scheduled to get a occipital nerve block next week.
@@RitaBeaton thank you for your response. I hope the nerve block is a success.
I am curious if you have been doing activities that caused your neck to be curved upward. An example would be gardening, pulling weeds something that has you bent over with your head raised?
Just curious if this aggravated the nerve
Is it normal to have back pain since i have this occipital neuralgia?
i started getting random sharp stabbing shooting pains in my head forhead temples ears neck 2 months ago my MRI of the head was clear just the neck MRI showed a Kyphosis i dobt know what to do to stop this stabbing pain
You may have occipital neuralgia.
I think mine came from working at Amazon. I had to stand for 10 hours, bending my neck down to use a computer. They refused to provide me with a chair.
They refused you a chair for 10 hours! Wow! Hope you're doing okay now.
I worked there also. It was abusive physically. In the first week they demand 55 hours of manual labor and no chair.
Please guys listen to me i was struggling with occipital neuralgia the pain was unbearable but i feel so relaxed after doing these 2 things number 1- exercise number- 2 cupping (hijama) im muslim and someone told me to try this last thing after all these doctors n etc etc i swear everyone put 8 cups on your back i swear to god you'll all feel the difference and relief from pain i beg you guys to do this if you wanna live a normal life and let me know how you people feelafter all this please go do hijama (cupping)

How do you incorporate these stretches in therapy for a fusion C3-C6?
These exercises can all be done after fusion (after the initial healing phase, approximately 4-6 weeks post-op). Start with small movements and stop if anything causes pain. If you are already seeing a physical therapist, tell them about these exercises and ask for their assistance in weaving them into your program as appropriate.
@@MovementFunction had the fusion in 2020 so I’m good post op. Thanks for the incorporation of these exercises with the current condition. Looking at PRP and Prolotherapy as options also. I had PRP on my knee with awesome results.
Wish we could see the towel roll placement when you aren't lying on it....
Good point! I will record and post a short video to show the towel roll placement. I'm adding to my shot list...
