I've had occipital neuralgia for 9 months now. Episodes seem further apart. Physio and massage improved things, but I do my own massage of my face and head every morning and night and walk daily. If you have this, hang in there. It does get better!

I’ve visited an osteopath, recommended to me by my doctor. He is not doing much, like chiropractor that does manipulation or deep tissue massage. He does it slowly, without much movement, but somehow it’s been very helpful. He uses a lamp for warming up the area and acupuncture, some mild, subtle head movements and adjusts my shoulders a bit…it has helped me so much! Please don’t ignore this, the sooner you help your body the better, otherwise it might be too late. Nerves are very sensitive, so please listen to this lady!

@@gabitsu-ftw3871 It's already been 5 months, wow. To be honest, some days are better then others, I am learning so much about my body through these sessions, how vagus nerve also plays major role in all this, weak neck and back muscles and stress (emotional, anxiety and panic attacks). I try not to stress too much, do some light exercises for the neck, sleep well, do breathing practices, I almost don't have any issues. And he's using dry needling, not acupuncture as I initially wrote, it relaxes the muscles a bit. Neuralgia is better, as I wrote it took some action on my side as well, but I almost can't feel it anymore.

I got this from laying the back of head head against my metal bed(I advise people never do this) and I happened to fall asleep. Not long afterwards or the next day.. I was getting a sharp pain on the side of my head nonstop for several days (felt like a lightning bolt shooting up) Almost like tidal waves coming unexpectedly. Anyway, I did some research and took sarsaparilla tea( a holistic approach it started relief almost immediately) Then that night I prayed heartedly before I went to bed. Well, I had this spiritual dream ( it was actually happening) There were 3-4 beings looked like figures ( couldn’t make out who they were) standing over me and trying to turn me to my side. I didn’t understand what was happening because I didn’t know they were here to answer my prayer. So maybe try hot sarsaparilla tea (reminds me of turmeric but a brown color) and pray because this really worked for me. But you may want to speak to your doctor first!! Definitely not for people with kidney disease etc. Or perhaps a holistic doctor.

What I found really helped with me is massage of shoulder blade, traps, right side of spine in the neck, back of head, temples and other areas of the face. I use a baseball for this purpose. To get my shoulder blade and traps I basically grind the the tender areas into a door jamb pressing against the ball. The first time you do this it might actually feel worse because of the massage but once the worked muscles heal I found that I go a long time without having this headache. OTC drugs are useless. And so are a lot of these doctors.

That being said, fuck what people say, *your* the only one who has to live your life and deal with the consequences of your actions, so it's all up to you in this life, no matter what anyone said. Doesn't mean you can't find allies and friends along the way in your battle. No one but you can fix this problem, as shitty as that sounds, do research, try new things, quiet your mind and listen to your body.
I have bouts, sometimes years, I can go without these headaches, they can go away. But it requires time and attention to *yourself*

Yoga to help stretch out all the muscles.

I had this problem a few years ago. It came on rapidly starting with tenseness in my neck, like a cramp, to a sharp pain in the back of my neck, then shot up to the top of my head. It felt like the top of my skull had split open! It was the worst pain I had ever experienced. I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes without the pain being too overwhelming. If I stood any longer than that I would sometimes vomit from the pain. I went to see a doctor. They did an x-ray and a spinal tap to see if my brain was bleeding. The tests came back negative and I was diagnosed with migraine headaches. The pain continued for a couple of weeks which led me to miss a few days of work. Out of desperation, I took the advice of a coworker to visit a chiropractor. After my first chiropractic adjustment the pain was gone instantly never returned. Might be a good idea for some people here. It definitely worked for me!

@CJ. Feel your pain dude. I have somewhat same experiences on a weekly basis. The doctors I've seen did nothing but x-rays. This lady seems to have an idea why some these occur. All I can tell you is seek and educate yourself about your triggers and keep looking for someone who really knows how to treat your particular illness. There are many types of migraines. Good luck.

My neurologist, after doing an MRI, said that my Greater Occipital Neuralgia is caused by the blood vessels being wrapped too tightly around the nerves. I have suffered with debilitating pain in the back of my head (both sides) that feels like a baseball bat slamming into my head with each heartbeat. It also spreads to my forehead and behind my eyes.
The ONLY thing that helps is injections into that nerve cluster... narcotics at the ER don't help, heat/cold don't help, massage makes it worse, lying down makes it worse. I JUST had a seven day Greater Occipital Neuralgia episode that just about killed me. I had the injections yesterday and that pain is gone (though I have a terrible regular migraine today, of course 🙄).
I've had migraines since I was four (I'm now 44yrs old), as well as tension headaches and chronic sinus headaches. I had sinus surgery twice and get Botox every two months, along with a plethora of medications.
I would not have gone through ANY of these extreme treatments of PT and/or chiropractic had made a lick of difference. I would be very, very interested to know what you do differently from the PT I've had over the past 25 years - if there was a way to prevent recurring flare ups (besides the injections - which usually give relief for two to six months - and medications), I would love to find it!!

@@isabelescobar7384 my biggest break through was when I did a 45 min workout on a stationary bike and sweated it out, for some reason that deadened my headache then I picked up an extra hard contoured pillow and that stretched my neck all night for relief the next day. I also started to mix in shrugs and other exercises focused on the neck and shoulders then worked down. Only more targeted to certain areas. Neck, shoulder/shoulder blades and lower back. And I'm extremely prone to flare ups. Which drop me to my knees and make me cry like a newborn baby! Sometimes it gets so intense that my head will jolt to the left ( neuralgia mostly on the left side )
It has stopped for a while. I just started physio and that specific neuralgia is now back .
Postural changes , yes I agree . I have muscle weakness all over but , with any hope , once my muscles start getting stronger , we are hoping the neuralgia will reduce .

I have had physio for 31/2 years now at a cost of nearly £4000 , helped but didn’t cure it , I have now had full body acupuncture that has reduced the pain to 3 out of 10 so a lot , but still not cured completely. This surgery (among others: surgical nerve excision, nerve stimulator implant surgery, etc.) is the best cure there is out there, for this condition. Ask any neurosurgeon.

Hormones seem to be what sets mine off once or maybe twice per month. This has been going on for a decade. I lose two to three days of my life because of it. NSAIDs help but as much as I have to take to make the pain bearable should shut my kidneys down! I want to be rid of this. I have had three in the past 6 weeks and it is severely affecting my life and career.

My primary doctor is useless and I told him that I injured myself but he just believed that I strained my neck. I went behind his back and got an MRI prescription from my specialist. I also have some symptoms that are unrelated to the injury and he just says I'm anxious or I have IBS. He prescribed me anxiety meds that would actually interact negatively with my other medications that I am already taking. I am going to change him in a couple months because I just changed to him. It was a huge mistake switching to him. But the problem is that I don't know what primary doctors in my area is good. It's sad but it seems like a lot of doctors on TH-cam care more about people than the actual doctors most of the time. That is why a lot of people get turned off by doctors because they do not listen, take Gaslight you, refuse to do other test other than generic blood work, have a big egos and care more about what they can profit off of instead of helping their patients.

Deal with it??....hmmm...most of the time im in pain..when it starts it doesn't go away, I have to take a pain killer (Neurofen) it helps for a while then it will start again after a week or two. Ive seen Chiropractors which did temporarily help. Ive seen literally every alt treatments, nothing cured it..Drs say its a mechanical injury (whatever that means) but its to do with muscles and nerve which is very difficult to see in MRi etc. Im always doing stretches for the trap muscles... massages and so on....some times it helps other times it doesn't. I have done trigger point injections doesnt help, but this time I had enough and im going to go for Occipital Nerve Block see how that goes because i know its deffo these Nerves that create the THROBBING pain. If it works then I'll see Radio Frequency or Occipital Nerve release surgery.

Guys, I had most of these symptoms since covid times and in the past couple of years it’s gone way better. I am not cured totally yet but I am way better today and I have learned to manage my lifestyle to not make it a daily hindrance. Unless you are guided by qualified physician like her, avoid self treatment. Please don’t stretch your neck muscles. They are not meant to be stretched. Overtime I found out by first hand experience that complete rest to neck muscles helps. The single most thing that made a difference is stop looking at phone holding in hand. Be easy on yourself and let go of your stresses by breathing techniques. It helps release those tight muscles on your face and head and over time the body sorts out itself. Trust me, less is better in this case.
