Occipital Neuralgia and Headaches: Effective Treatments and Remedies

  • Are you experiencing burning, irritation, or sharp shooting pain in the back of your head? Does it also trigger headaches, vision changes, or other issues? If so, you may be suffering from Occipital Neuralgia, a condition caused by tensioning in the muscles around the head and neck that squeeze on the nerves.
There are several reasons why this tensioning happens, including trauma from a fall, car accident, or sports injury; postural adaptation changes due to an injury or alignment issues; and stress. If left untreated, the irritation can become continuous and affect both nerves and muscles.
So, what can be done to alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with Occipital Neuralgia? The key is to seek evaluation and treatment from someone who understands how the body is integrated together. At Rebalance Physical Therapy, we focus on treating both the musculature and fascia around the joints, such as the head, neck, shoulder, and shoulder blade. This allows the joints and muscles to be reeducated, which can reduce tensioning and prevent future irritation.

I got this from laying the back of head head against my metal bed(I advise people never do this) and I happened to fall asleep. Not long afterwards or the next day.. I was getting a sharp pain on the side of my head nonstop for several days (felt like a lightning bolt shooting up) Almost like tidal waves coming unexpectedly. Anyway, I did some research and took sarsaparilla tea( a holistic approach it started relief almost immediately) Then that night I prayed heartedly before I went to bed. Well, I had this spiritual dream ( it was actually happening) There were 3-4 beings looked like figures ( couldn’t make out who they were) standing over me and trying to turn me to my side. I didn’t understand what was happening because I didn’t know they were here to answer my prayer. So maybe try hot sarsaparilla tea (reminds me of turmeric but a brown color) and pray because this really worked for me. But you may want to speak to your doctor first!! Definitely not for people with kidney disease etc. Or perhaps a holistic doctor.

No one but you can fix this problem, as shitty as that sounds, do research, try new things, quiet your mind and listen to your body.

What I found really helped with me is massage of shoulder blade, traps, right side of spine in the neck, back of head, temples and other areas of the face. I use a baseball for this purpose. To get my shoulder blade and traps I basically grind the the tender areas into a door jamb pressing against the ball. The first time you do this it might actually feel worse because of the massage but once the worked muscles heal I found that I go a long time without having this headache. OTC drugs are useless. And so are a lot of these doctors.

I had this problem a few years ago. It came on rapidly starting with tenseness in my neck, like a cramp, to a sharp pain in the back of my neck, then shot up to the top of my head. It felt like the top of my skull had split open! It was the worst pain I had ever experienced. I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes without the pain being too overwhelming. If I stood any longer than that I would sometimes vomit from the pain. I went to see a doctor. They did an x-ray and a spinal tap to see if my brain was bleeding. The tests came back negative and I was diagnosed with migraine headaches. The pain continued for a couple of weeks which led me to miss a few days of work. Out of desperation, I took the advice of a coworker to visit a chiropractor. After my first chiropractic adjustment the pain was gone instantly never returned. Might be a good idea for some people here. It definitely worked for me!

My neurologist, after doing an MRI, said that my Greater Occipital Neuralgia is caused by the blood vessels being wrapped too tightly around the nerves. I have suffered with debilitating pain in the back of my head (both sides) that feels like a baseball bat slamming into my head with each heartbeat. It also spreads to my forehead and behind my eyes.
The ONLY thing that helps is injections into that nerve cluster... narcotics at the ER don't help, heat/cold don't help, massage makes it worse, lying down makes it worse. I JUST had a seven day Greater Occipital Neuralgia episode that just about killed me. I had the injections yesterday and that pain is gone (though I have a terrible regular migraine today, of course 🙄).
I've had migraines since I was four (I'm now 44yrs old), as well as tension headaches and chronic sinus headaches. I had sinus surgery twice and get Botox every two months, along with a plethora of medications.
I would not have gone through ANY of these extreme treatments of PT and/or chiropractic had made a lick of difference. I would be very, very interested to know what you do differently from the PT I've had over the past 25 years - if there was a way to prevent recurring flare ups (besides the injections - which usually give relief for two to six months - and medications), I would love to find it!!

That's the first time I've read about the blood vessels and might explain how i discovered some relief from my pain, basically i went to the gym and started on the exerc bike and got my heart beat up for around 45 min and sweated it out at full speed, when id finished my headache was gone, but i could explain how that stopped my headache

For me is a inflammation of the nerve, thats goes through the occipital. And inyections has help me a little, because I'm still getting the pain. But less fricuent, also I'm taking TUMERIC capsules, to keep inflammation under control. Try them out .

@@isabelescobar7384 my biggest break through was when I did a 45 min workout on a stationary bike and sweated it out, for some reason that deadened my headache then I picked up an extra hard contoured pillow and that stretched my neck all night for relief the next day. I also started to mix in shrugs and other exercises focused on the neck and shoulders then worked down. I'm about 70% free of headache now, if I get less sleep then 6 hours it comes back or a big day out with lots of activity in the city, I might get it back in the arvo.

I had a really bad fall on some ice and I'd landed on the crown of my head (I know, ouch!) and the muscles never fully healed. Now my pain perfectly mimics someone who has Fibromyalgia. Only more targeted to certain areas. Neck, shoulder/shoulder blades and lower back. And I'm extremely prone to flare ups. Which drop me to my knees and make me cry like a newborn baby! Try using an Infared sauna or Bikram yoga. Posture correction and neck stretches are important. Definitely eliminate cracking your neck if doing that. + Dry needling and massage therapy from someone who knows what they’re doing (as mentioned in video) will help

Deal with it??....hmmm...most of the time im in pain..when it starts it doesn't go away, I have to take a pain killer (Neurofen) it helps for a while then it will start again after a week or two. Ive seen Chiropractors which did temporarily help. Ive seen literally every alt treatments, nothing cured it..Drs say its a mechanical injury (whatever that means) but its to do with muscles and nerve which is very difficult to see in MRi etc. Im always doing stretches for the trap muscles... massages and so on....some times it helps other times it doesn't. I have done trigger point injections doesnt help, but this time I had enough and im going to go for Occipital Nerve Block see how that goes because i know its deffo these Nerves that create the THROBBING pain. If it works then I'll see Radio Frequency or Occipital Nerve release surgery.
